Hello Josh, I agree, Super Trees are awesome. You guys had quite the production line going on there. Henry Ford would’ve been impressed. Great stuff. Beautiful forest. See ya.
I love your videos dude!! They are very inspiring to see what real talent can do to a model railroad! It is making me want to build my own detailed layout in my train room, so I’m looking forward to that!
To straighten the trees use a tea kettle. Hold the trees over the steam for about 5 seconds with a pair of needle nose pliers. Set the tree so it’s straight. Pull away from the steam for about 8 second to let it set. Set the tree aside and do your next one. It’s the best suggestion I have found so far. Got the idea from someone on RUclips.
I’ve found Rustoleum Satin Nutmeg to be a good spray acrylic to use. It’s not a deep brown, but it’s not quite gray either. I personally skip the glue step and allow the leaves to adhere to the paint directly as it dries. Reduces the whole process to a matter of minutes. Getting close to 200 trees done this way now, and after about 6 months since starting, even the oldest are still holding their leaves like the day they were made, providing you don’t violently shake them upside down (which given their fragility, isn’t a good idea anyway).
I plan to do a diorama very soon, and I was looking for something a little bit more budget-friendly and of this pack of trees should do! Thank you so much - Simon
I just got my hands on the starter kit and 2 boxes of super trees. I am curious as to how hard it will be to make a Loblolly Pine Tree with some very short static grass to represent pine needles vs. using the super leafs. - Jason
Great video - I too like this product. Did you not need to straighten the trunks? I find most of the trunks to be bent and arc 30 degrees or more so I tend to have to add a step between removing leaves and painting: i end up using a soldering iron with an old tip to lend some heat and bend them closer to straight. Maybe I just have had bad luck with my batches of tree material?
I was looking forward to this video, but two huge omissions. One is the required straightening mentioned in a prior comment. Second is dealing with the “flat” side of the trees. This is where the “scrap” pieces come into play, cut to size and adhered with hairspray prior to adding the foliage. Or “foilage”. In the interest of fairness, with so many trees to do, maybe you place flat to flat, to make a “full” tree. Still should have been addressed in my opinion. But thanks for posting, I look forward to more. Y’all have done a great job.
Hey Bill great point! Perhaps straightening some of the trees was necessary but considering many of the trees on this layout are on steep hillsides maybe the bent trunk was helpful. Also because the trees are so close together the flatness of some of them doesn't show up as you stated. There are several other techniques that can be used with these trees but you can't deny that what these modelers have done with theirs works well for their needs. I appreciate the "refresher course" and anyone taking the time to share their experience of building a model railroad. Especially when it yields these types of results.
instead of drilling a hole into the layout because I will be using foam that you can poke a tree into the hole could I poke the tree into the foam with the supertrees instead of using a drill. btw I use n scale if that makes a difference
would it not be better to shake the exess glue off before holding it over the leaf materiel? the glue dripping into it like that is going to waste leaves as it will ball and glue it together in the tub. as you see in the video.... that seems a waste letting it drip into the box of leaves.
I used natural plant materials for the trunks and after a few years they started dropping their branches. Branches in the walkways and on the tracks. You may have solved that problem by spray painting the trunks. Wish i thought of it.
Hello NSmodeler24, Thanks for making and posting this to RUclips! Out of curiosity, what's the backing track you guys used? It'll help me to make my trees (hopefully) as good as yours.
I use bachman or woodlands scenics and life like and ahm trees for my layout but once i find a building for my railroad club I’m going to build a new layout and use all sorts of brands
@@nsmodeler24 I purchased my first N Scale and I didn't realize it was so tiny!! Lol.. Now I am here wondering what could have been with HO... From the video HO looks like I should've went that route smh
Unless you are space challenged, HO. The older we get the harder it is to deal with small pieces! I have a hard enough time getting HO equipment on the track!! LOL!
these are NOT, i repeat NOT ultra realistic. They are friggin real. i bet if you make photos from the right angle, nobody would expect that this is a model railroad. love the look nice work :P
Great to make a forest for sure. These trees, Noch leaves and static grass - all that you need for realistic scenery.
The quantity and verity of Louisiana vegetation makes scenery a big challenge as well! Nice work keep it up!

Just wow! All your videos are amazing!! I hope to make my layout look that good one day! Thanks for all the tips very helpful!
Thanks Josh for the tutorial on making Super Trees.
Very timely! Now I’ve just got to start. Your finished product is superb!
First...that scene looks amazing. Second I love how you really simplified the process. I love making super trees. Thanks for sharing. David
Just amazing Josh! Thanks for sharing.

You can also use a soldering iron.

I have done it this way as well. I also have used hairspray with varying levels of satisfaction.

Those trees really made an improvement. Looking good!
I would really love to see a video about your procedures during an operation in the event of a derailment. I think that would be really cool!
That is quite the elaborate process well thought out.
Looks great, thanks for the info on how to make trees.
Great work gentlemen! The end result is amazing.
Beautiful results.
Love your channel and the great videos. Keep up the good work
It a good product if you got a lot of to make...or...there's guys like me that will make Trees, great info and video Josh. Bob
Nice trees! I am looking forward to making my own when I get to that stage.
TOTALLY AWESOME JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love your layout ! Very good work.
Thanks Richard!

Magnífico layout. ..

Fantastic
thanks. this is really gonna help with my HO scale layout.
YES as always!
That was awesome.
i love your layout, ild love one, do you recommend i have one made or buy one?
Layout looks great but you HO guys have it easy !!!!
LOL
EASY!
awesome
What did you use for the brown leaf ground cover? Also what colors did you use for the trees?
great video very nice all the best al in the u k 😁😁😁👍
So the big bag of trees is just some sort of plant that they dried and packaged up? What is it and can you just find it in the wild?
It's called seafoam, I can't remember where its native to, but you can grow your own as well
@@JoeyBPhotography the plant is indigenous to Scandinavia.

Hey, Josh. Good video! I tried to find Tak-E-Glue on their website and they only show Matt Medium. Is it the similar to what you use?
Unfortunately, I'm not sure. I would give them a call and see what they say!
Josh
if ya sprinkle the leaves over the edge of the tree and spin it as ya go ya wont get any on the upper trunk etc, so will make it look a bit better

There's no substitute for SuperTrees.

I know you from discord lol what a small world.
Most trees have a grey colored bark
Which is better N or HO Scale?
We're a bit biased as we model HO, but there are benefits to both and is probably more personal preference!
