Surprise!!! I'm starting the show Wednesday! I know a brief amount regarding the Addams Family and everyone can't stop talking about this show, so I figured I'd give it a shot! I hear the performances are great and its addicting so I'm very excited to get into it - I know it's not what I typically watch and a complete surprise, but I hope you'll enjoy it with me!!

Fun Facts: Tim Burton directed 4 episodes and most of the filming took place in Romania.
Each canoe has to have a Edgar Allen Poe theme. Rats and the axe from Pit and the Pendulum, the Sirens with the gold make up - The Gold Bug, the Black Cats from the story The Black Cat, and the Jesters from The Cask of Amontillado.
FYI, since you wanted to know - Gwendoline Christie, the actress who plays the principal is 1.91m tall, or approximately 6'3''.
She also played Briana of Tarth in Game of Thrones

3:02 They're probably from home, they mention having pet piranha in the 60s tv show. But I love that you were more concerned with whether or not it was safe for the piranha's in a chlorine filled pool than you were for the safety of the jocks being in a pool with piranhas.

Why does everyone assume the piranha scene happens immediately after Wednesday rescues Pugsley? It might have been the next day, or even several days later.

@@andrewrawlings5220 - Agreed. Which in turn suggests that she'd have to go home to get them, then return to school. Most likely the following day.
In the pool scene, I don't think the smile is from seeing others in pain, I think it's from seeing "justice" done. Wednesday is moral in the sense that she doesn't hurt people unless they "deserve" it in some manner. Of course, the definitions of justice and deserve may vary which is why I put them in quotes.
Definitions are mere guidelines. (The definition for the Sun used to include "orbits the Earth.)
Justice is mankind's search for an equality that is not absurd. (Everyone having their eyes surgically removed because blind people exist would be absurd.)
"Deserving" is a myth.
In the Poe Cup the teams refere to books by Edgar Allan Poe.

The boat race (The Poe Cup) has each team choosing an Edgar Allen Poe story as a theme. The Black Cat, The Gold Bug, Pit & the Pendulum, and The Cask of Amontillado (the jokers).
The axe might or might not have been real. As others have mentioned, the teams were named after the works of Poe: the purple team was "The Pit and the Pendulum," wherein Edgar Allan describes a torture chamber in agonizing detail. Its central feature is an axe-bladed pendulum that swings above its helpless victim, inching ever closer with each stanza; so they might have made a less-than-lethal weapon that _looked_ like an axe in keeping with their theme.

The town of Jericho is in Vermont outside of Burlington, near Lake Champlain. BUT...
For the show the entire town of Jericho, was constructed at Buftea Studios.
Nevermore Academy itself is a little ways away though.
it was filmed in Bușteni, Romania. It is actually the Cantacuzino Castle.
Jenna Ortega did a great job as Wednesday. Especially since her dorm mother is played by Wednesday.
I like that you called Christina Ricci "Wednesday" as if they are one-and-the-same. Obviously, I knew what you meant though. To those that grew are used to her playing Wednesday from the 90's movies, it seems natural.

Where did she get the piranhas? Well, in the 1964 TV series, there was a fish tank full of them in the living room. Gomez or Morticia would feed them a leg of beef or pork, and the pirahnas would spit out the bones. So she had easy access to the fish.

It made me feel absolutely ancient that you immediately recognized Riki Lindhome but didn’t seem to at all recognize Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday Addams in the 1991 & 1993 film versions of The Addams Family!
Fun facts about Jenna Ortega… she learned how to fence, play the cello, took archery and canoeing lessons, learned how to speak German, and choreographed the now iconic dance scene. Also, she very deliberately DID NOT BLINK when the camera is on her face. 🤯

It's great how Bianca is not the stereotype "IT" girl bully. Not only is she just as capable as Wednesday she has her own drives and commitments. They make her a really well rounded character.
It would have been the boldest move ever if after Enid said "furs" while naming the cliques, the camera then revealed like just a group of people in furry costumes.

The Wednesday character had me laughing with her never ending dark remarks and comebacks.
Wednesday is the best new series that I have seen in years 341 million hours watch time in ONE week that says a lot

Gwendoline Christie (Principal Weems) is 6'3" tall. She's best known as Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones. She also played Captain Phasma (Stormtrooper with chrome armor) in Star Wars 7 and 8, and she plays Lucifer in the recent "The Sandman" series which I also highly recommend.
The canoes for the boat race were each based on Edgar Alan Poe stories. Wednesday and Enid's boat was based on "The Black Cat". The Vampires in purple monk hoods were "The Pit and The Pendulum". The jesters were "The Cask of Amontillado". And the Sirens were "The Gold Bug".
This was a well done series that stayed true to form. Also, count the number of blinks Wednesday does on camera. :P Since the third episode I saw a story where she said she was nervous during a scene and burton noticed and encouraged her to contine. I got to like 20 blinks during a scene for the rest of the season.
"oh, no. don't do that. DON'T do that! on a teenage boys bed?" I was already laughing out loud, and then, "what are you looking for? HORROR?!?!" I actually fell out of my chair! 🤣

First of all, I absolutely LOVE that your first reaction to the piranhas is "but.. that water has chlorine in it! Those poor fish!" You are definitely the *only* reactor I've seen who was concerned about the piranha's wellbeing.
Secondly, almost everyone thinks it weird/unrealistic that she just happened to have piranhas handy. Why does everyone assume it happens immediately after she releases Pugsley? Heck, it may have been a day, or even a week later, that she got revenge.
I dont even find it unusual that she would have them at hand.. Probably have them in a tank at home

Yeah a lot of people are questioning how she got piranha when the show is clearly fictional, just 10 seconds ago this girl has a vision of the past amd clearly has powers and they are more suprised about her getting a piranhas lol
A lot of pools use salt water instead of chlorine due to it being better for the body and cheaper/easier to use and maintain
@@adrianflipflop9054 piranha is a fresh water fish so both clorine and salt water is bad for them in the long run.

With the boat race thing, each team is themed after a different Edgar Allen Poe story. The hooded people with the axe rig are "The Pit and the Pendulum." The clowns are "The Cask of Amontillado" (one of the characters in that had been dressed as a jester). Then there's "The Black Cat" which is the team Wednesday is on, and finally "The Gold Bug," the team Bianca is on.
Enid is almost my favorite character over Wednesday. Best friend someone could have.
Ever since I saw the first episode of Wednesday, I'd been wondering who Enid reminded me of. Yes, it was you. You, @VKunia. You are Enid.
I just finished watching this with my family, and while we are all huge Addams Family fans, this is a standout performance and show. I love the spontaneity as well
I love how everyone takes Thing's existence pretty well, all things considered

Honestly wasn't expecting to enjoy this show, but Jenna did such a great job I was sucked in by the end of E1.
I'm glad you took this show your repertory. I love this show and especially Jenna Ortega. Jenna's performance is so good and weird. Especially the blinkin' thing is so disturbing. Only thing I have little hard to get used to is Luis Guzmán's Gomez after Raul Julia's version but I read that Tim Burton wanted Gomez to be original cartoon version Gomez. Short and overweight. I hope there are more seasons to come!

Having watched these two episodes today, I liked watching them again with your commentary. I saw -- and heard -- more things the second time.
I finished the show yesterday, I was pleasantly surprised that I liked it cuz I was losing faith in Tim Burton after he ruined Dumbo, So I was afraid he was going to change Wednesday but he stayed true to her. I'm glad you like it and I know that you'll enjoy the series.
This is a very good series with a great cast (the story gets a tad messy later on but it does not counter balance all the good parts). It’s a mix of Harry Potter and The Addams Family and it works surprisingly well (and that is coming from one who honestly never cared for either one!). Ortega is very good, Zeta-Jones’ casting was genius but Emma Myers (Enid) is the one that shines in many ways on the show.
I’m looking forward to Season 2, if there is one.
I don't know if you've watched "Game of Thrones," but the headmistress you would know (though in a helmet) from Star Wars VII "The Force Awakens." She was Captain Phasma, the chrome-plated Stormtrooper.

I feel like no one comments on one of my favorite clever lines from Wednesday. When the psychiatrist says "part of this journey requires us going to uncomfortable places emotionally" and Wednesday replies "I don't travel well." it was just really quick and witty, I loved it. This is not my usual genre to watch either, but I ended up binge-watchin this.
To be honest, This is definitely another cool, uniqueness, and her awesome preformance by Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams because she does bring her own take of the character and with the help of the cool, amazing director Tim Burton does bring the charm of Wednesday Addams from the Addams family, Amazing reaction to this fun episode VKunia because you are really cool .

Gorgons are Medusa, they have snakes for hair and if someone looks at them, they turn to stone, so....stoners. And yes, Principal Weems is Gwendolyn Christie who is actually 6'3".
Gorgon is the type of creature, not Medusa which is a single entity, one of the Gorgon Sisters (Stheno, Euryale, Medusa). So Medusa is a Gorgon, not the other way around.

Since the teams in The Poe Cup need to named after a Poe story I'm guessing, 'The Pit And The Pendulum', 'Hop Frog' (which is about a jester), 'The Black Cat' and 'The Gold Bug'.
This ended up being my second favorite show of the year(second only to ANDOR). Not everything in the show works, but its strengths definitely make up for any weaknesses.
I was impressed with Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia and even more with Luis Guzmán as Gómez

Thing was not CGI. They use a magician to do all the hand acting if you will. The rest of his arm had a blue sleeve to make it disappear in editing.

I watched the series and someone told me "What did you think of Ser Brienne of Tarth?" I had no idea who that was. They told me game of thrones. I still had no idea since I didn't watch it lol. Then they said Captain Phasma from Star Wars. Then I knew who they were talking about. I honestly didn't recognize in her this. You think I would have given she has a pretty unique face and physique. She was the principal.

Yes, the therapist is, in fact, the Garfunkle portion of the folk duo. Both of them, by the way, played characters on the Big Bang Theory. So glad that you are enjoying the show! Looking forward to the rest of it!

The Poe Race teams have be be themed after a Poe story, hence the Black Cats. Enid is a werewolf, but she doesn't really hang out with the other werewolves because of her inability to transform. Her best friend Yoko is a vampire, which is why she was made sick by Bianca slipping her garlic bread.
They took all the different portrayals of the characters and made this series, comics and the old series and the movies 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
The guy with the crawly something under his knit cap was called "Gorgon," a dead giveaway that he has snakes for hair. And the thing about stoned probably referred to the gaze of a gorgon turning someone to stone. (Medusa was a gorgon, one of 3 sisters.) ..."The Black Cat" is an Edgar Alan Poe story. I noticed on other canoes the names "Amontillado" (from "The Cask of Amontillado") and I think "Pit and the Pendulum," and "The Gold Bug," so all Poe stories.
I liked Wednesday alot more than I thought I would and it builds nicely over a short number of episodes this season. You should see all of them.
