Before it was a TV Show or Movie, The Addams Family was a comic strip by Charles Addams. Luiz Guzman looks just like the comic version of Gomez. That's why Tim Burton chose him.

No one could replace Raul Julia as Gomez Addams so I'm glad Netflix didn't try. Instead the producers went all the way back to the 1930s for the original interpretation of Gomez, and Luis Guzman's appearance and behavior is *great* when judged against the old New Yorker comic strip. I am also a huge fan of Riki Lindhome. If anyone hasn't yet seen "Another Period," the series she did with Natasha Leggero, do yourself a favor and binge that -- after you're done with Wednesday, or course.

I’m so glad they involved Christina Ricci in this show. Her Wednesday was iconic. Ricci gave her real depth, and a moral center that’s carried through to this show: Wednesday only really ever *truly* tortures (kills?) the cruel and bigoted people making life hard for the downtrodden. That is why we love her, and it comes almost entirely from Ricci’s turn. Wednesday became a pop culture icon thanks to her.

I really appreciate that Pugsly understands Wednesday. Like, yeah, she's calling him soft and weak and saying that he won't last two months, but he knows that she is actually saying that she's worried that he won't be okay without her. Also, he went right in for a hug and she didn't even try to stop it.

At a certain age, you start to acknowledge the very real possibility that you will grow up to become your parents and start to notice their active attempts to make that happen. @juliemcgugan1244 Год назад +1

I think that’s Rowan’s visions were ‘unreliable’ because she put her own personal emotions into it, when interpreting them. At first, Wednesday also thought she would be responsible for the school’s downfall, but then realized that she wasn’t looking at the full picture. Morticia called herself a ‘dove.’ She said that her own visions tended to be more positive, so I think that such a prophecy would be beyond that range of her own positive nature, so the things that ended up happing caught her off-guard. Their visions weren’t ‘unreliable;’ they were actually quite on-point. It was their interpretations that were unreliable.

And she isn’t sure where she fits; normie world and Nevermore both don’t seem to accept her. Her parents reminiscing about their own time a Nevermore gets her back up, because she has no choice but to go there and she resents the legacy that she feels she has to live up to. Her parents also have no choice in the matter. It was the choice of the court. It is also the first time she is away from them and she isn’t allowing them to support her. They are trying to alley her fears, using their own positive experience at the school, but this makes the situation even worse. They certainly didn’t work so hard while they were at the school because they wanted to hold it over their future children; they just loved how they fit in somewhere. Because Wednesday is so unlike her parents (at least, she thinks she is,) she resents what she feels is their attempt to turn her into a version of them. She is not sure where she belongs. Everyone is feeling out of control and they all need time to allow things to slot into place. Wednesday, whether she ends up being like her Mother in the long run, or not, needs to feel like it is her choice.

You seem to have mixed up a name there, Ajax is the Gorgon guy. The tortured artist with which Wednesday has a past is named Xavier. But there are a lot of characters that get introduced in first episode, so that is understandable.

Thank you for a great reaction to this iconic show. Wednesday is becoming a (deserved) cultural phenomenon, and Jenna Ortega just nails the character. Good catch on that Millar-Gough reference, I never noticed that. I agree on the death of Nero, I can't believe they got me to feel sad about the death of a scorpion. Great reaction and analysis, I look forward to future episodes.

You are right that a reboot of a classic may have not been apropos, but this is a version of Wednesday in her middle teens (vs. 8 yrs old like the movies and tv show) so it works as a very good re-image of the character.
And something else I thought was very interesting was Tim Burton made up Gomez to look like the original Gomez Addams from the Charles Addams cartoon which was published in the New Yorker 70-80 years ago.

I thought the same thing about Wednesday needing a nail file to unlatch a window that wasn't actually locked. The first time I saw the monster, I thought it had Tim Burton's stamp all over it. It reminded me of the snake version of Beetlejuice.

I see other folks already mentioned it. I grew up during the 60's watching the Addam's Family TV show, but my Mom (who was a commercial artist) adored the Charles Addams drawings, and had all of the collections in the books. (He was very popular in the New Yorker magazine.) So, I grew up with Gomez as John Astin (Sean Astin's dad) in the TV show, and the father character from the drawings (never actually named), which very much resembles Luis Guzman. When the movies came out, I thought Raul Julia did a fine job, but he wasn't really the Gomez I grew up with. And, that's okay. Now... I loved Christina Ricci's Wednesday in the movies. The little girl in the show was very milquetoast by comparison. This new girl (I'm sorry.... I don't remember her name) is doing a very good job, but as you say, she's pushing the limit of the humor. That, I believe, is a product of the times. In the drawings, and the TV show, and even the first movie, you don't actually see the result of the macabre humor. It's implied which, I think, makes it funnier. That was then. As you said, they're pushing the boundaries a bit. We'll just have to see how far they go. I'm enjoying your reactions. Thank you for the watch. I'm looking forward to the next.

I was the age of Christina Ricci when the films were released and I had the hugest crush on her as Wednesday. I was not expecting to be able to accept anyone else as the character and - much like you - was not expecting this series to be any good. But I was pleasantly surprised. It's actually decent. And Jenna Ortega won me over (once I got used to her.)

As Mr Robert Rouse has written, the two live action versions of Gomez are different from the original comic of the Addams family. So picking Luiz Guzman was the perfect choice. Jenna Ortega's part as Wensday she learned to play the cello and fencing, plus does some of her own stunts. Love you reaction to the show am looking forward to the next video. Lets see where they go with it. Jenna Ortega is fantastic. She worked so hard (literally) to make the character believable, and for my money, pulls it off 100%. looking forward to the rest of the reactions.

Luis is perfect. He is the spitting image of Gomez from the original Charles Addams cartoons. Catherine is lovely and is my second favorite Morticia next to Carolyn Jones from the 60s show. BTW the Gomez from the 60s was played by John Astin... You might be familiar with his son Sean. Also, Ophelia Hall, where Wednesday's room is located, aside from being named after Hamlet's wife from Shakespeare's play, was also the name of Morticia's twin sister in the 60s show.

Regarding Wednesday not being too fond of, or not liking her family too much, that is a main theme on the most recent Addams Family animated movie which came out last year. In The movie centers around Wednesday feeling like she doesn't fit in with her family and actually trying to leave them.
