My first online victory against a human opponent in Il-2 Cliffs of Dover. Set during the Battle of Britain, in fall 1940. Flying as part of I./JG 52, I took off to link up with a flight of German Do-17 "flying pencil" light bombers and escort them across the English Channel. Alerted by radar, the Royal Air Force responds with Spitfires and Hurricanes to intercept.
I flew a Bf-109E-4, loaded with a combat mix of High Explosive M-Geschoss and Armor-Piercing Incendiary 20mm cannon rounds.
S! to my opponent!
Dogfight took place on the ATAG Axis vs Allies server on March 25, 2012. ATAG is a full realism difficulty server. Flight was recorded using the ingame recording track feature. The track was captured using FRAPs. The video was edited using Sony Vegas Platinum 11. Looking around in the cockpit was enabled by TrackIR 5.
The music is attributed in the credits - I do not claim or own the rights to the music, nor do I take credit for any of it.
I just stumbled across this video again...very good work! Oh and thanks for introducing me to "The Glitch Mob". I just listened to them while driving home from work not an hour ago :)
Brilliant vid! Great timing and choice of music, 5 Stars to you Sir.
Since I watched your video ~5 years ago, every time I travel somewhere by the air and the plane takes off, I listen to "Animus Vox". I tries to turn the music on like so the "energic" part of the song starts when the plane is ready to take off and the turbines begin to roar. Nice choice of music. Really like how music blends with engine noises in the video. Thank you!
Cool! Glad it left a good impression on you!
Ausgezeichnet! BTW I do like your choice of music - including the trance track you used on another video.
I use a head tracking device called TrackIR to look around the cockpit. It mimics your real life head movements in the game. So if I lean to the right, my character leans to the right, if I sit up, I can see over the nose, if I look right, the pilot's head looks right, etc. In full real settings a lot of players use it. Once I got a taste of flying with it, I can't imagine flying without it.
Nice work there man, I know its a blast to get your first kill online, it really gives a sense of accomplishment. I FLy red, so Ill be sure to see you in the skies, preferably in my gunsights! S!
Personally, I love it. It's my favorite flight sim. There is already a mod group that is adding in new features. If you want it to be as realistic as possible, CloD's flight/damage models, engine management, and interactive cockpits are for you. Otherwise go for Il-2 1946, which is also a great sim, but is easier to learn and has simpler flight models. Also, CloD only covers the Battle of Britain, while Il-2 1946 covers all of the theaters, since it's been around long enough for many expansions.
Yeah, the map is one huge map, with the terrain, towns, cities, airfields and ports crafted to match the maps of the French coast and southeastern England in 1940. Even though most multiplayer mapmakers try to limit the fighting to the Pas de Calais (shortest flight distance over the water) there is a huge expanse of coastline and land to fly/fight over. The city of London is also there, and it's a massive sprawling city much like Berlin was in Il-2 1946, and is complete with all the landmarks.
Yeah, my favorite combat flight sim for sure. On a related note, the new mod pack by Team Fusion for Il-2 CloD just got released, and is looking good. It could very well be the beginning of a long life of awesomeness for CloD much like the mods did for Il-2 1946.
Once RL calms down I'll be playing more, so hopefully I'll see you in the skies over the English Channel!
i find it is so cool the music go with the video
For WW2 era planes theres no doubt, Cliifs of Dover.DSC modelling is superb, but right now theres only one airplane from the 40's that you can fly, the mighty P51.They intend to do a proper ww2 theater in the future but that will probably take more than a year.So I recommend Cliffs of Dover. If you are interested in historical squadron based online flying check the ACG forums. We got 3 RAF squadrons and two Luftwaffe stafflen.
I've played the Il-2 series for many years. This video may have been my first CloD online experience, but I'd played the old series long before that. And in all of those years, I never lost a fight to anyone where it wasn't the fault of a mistake that I made, or the enemy pilot's superior skill. I've played these games for thousands and thousands of hours with thousands of sorties. For me to be able to say that... well you shouldn't be worried about hackers either.
Thanks! I find that with the combat flight sims, getting started is the hardest part and that makes victories so much more rewarding and thrilling than victories in other games.
Personally, I only use the zoom when shooting from behind, or at a target that is not moving very fast across my field of vision. Otherwise, if they are crossing rapidly across my front, and I zoom in, I lose all of my peripheral vision and will probably lose sight of the target after taking the shot.
I learned it the hard way by playing it and figuring it out and watching tutorials on youtube. For the mission builder, I had years of previous experience building missions in the old Il-2, which is a lot easier to learn. As for bullets not hitting, I've never seen such a problem. It's either lag on your computer or your eyes deceiving you. The guns have different velocities - tracers from your machine guns aren't showing you where your cannon rounds are going and vice versa.
Careful! You were turning with him. It was dangerous game.
"13:37 hours" :)
awesome upload, this game is an eye-candy.
Yeah, I remember those glitches when I first tried the game about a year ago. I can't say that they are completely gone for everyone, but with my current rig I haven't seen them with the graphics all up. Also, the graphics optimization has actually improved a lot, and there is a patch coming out right now that is being publicly playtested that gives huge performance improvements across the board. Also, the color pallets are better than they were on release, as well as the new sound engine.
Thanks! I'm glad you like it. Hopefully I'll find the time to put out more Il-2 vids for you guys.
Cliffs of Dover is set during 1940 and the Battle of Britain. The Fw-190 entered front line service during the latter half of 1941 over the western front. There are Fw-190s in Il-2 1946 though. Hopefully the Fw-190 will make an appearance soon. The next expansion is 1941 eastern front set around Moscow during the winter fighting there, from what I've heard.
You're right. It's called gun convergence in english (the distance where the streams of gunfire meet in front of you). Adjusting it really helped my accuracy later on.
I double-checked and you can see the extent of the map by looking at a map of the channel. The CloD map extends from the French border with Belgium, with Dunkirk being the major coastal town farthest east, all the way past Cherbourg in the southwest in Normandy. Caen is the city farthest south. Across the Channel it includes SE England, with London being the farthest city to the north of the map, and including the English coast from where Manston airfield is all the way down past Southampton.
Wow~! Great dogfighting video!!
Hope to see your others dogfight videos.
Salute~!
Hi all, congratulations CanvasKnight nice victory. I am supernoob, only 2 wins and a lot of hours played :)))))) so i not the best to give advices, but watching other videos about this i see that is good to use the zoom vision at the moment of shot. Easy to say difficult to do.... Great dog fight mate !!! good luck and check your six !!!!!
Runs so dang smooth. Sorry if this question has been asked before:
What settings are you playing at and what video card and proc are you running?
Great video!
Did you know a German pilot sitting in his plane even when it was on the ground could see the Cliffs of Dover from some airfields in northern France? Douglas Bader was surprised by this when they sat him in one of theirs after they captured him.
I've been reluctant to get this sim.. Ever since hackers took over Microsoft CFS2, simulations for me just haven't been the same.. I remember the aerial domes of CFS2 and in my opinion the last IL2s just haven't been able to come close to it.. I hope to one day suck it up and get this. I do miss those flying days very much.
Yes. It used to be extremely common in the old Il-2 community both as a greeting and as a sign of respect for an opponent.
Don't need music for these... most of us just wanna watch the action. the video part was good
WD fellow pilot, perfectly watchable video, nice landing too :). Keep up!
Cheers.
nice dog fight. And I liked the music. I heard bad things about this game so I did not buy it, however after watching this video along with others I am going to buy it.
I'm using an nvidia GTX 580 and an Intel core i7 2600k processor. It was top of the line back in 2011, so you should have no problem getting equal or better specs now. Good luck building your PC!
Yeah it's a good online game. It does need a good PC. Not the best anymore, but good. I run it maxed out with an Nvidia GTX 580, Intel core i7 2600k, and only 8 GB of RAM. The best flight sims for WWII are Il-2 1946 (the old game) and Il-2 Cliffs of Dover. The best WWI flight sim is Rise of Flight, and the best modern combat series are DCS Black Shark and DCS A-10C. Lock-on Modern Air Combat is an older one that is also very good (same company as DCS).
Incredible vid! bought Wings of Prey yesterday which is fun, though I can't find any online servers, even when a friend makes them.
Saw my bro play this and would be interested in buying it and learning to fly it as a sim. How highly would you rate this game?
Check out Team Fusion's mod pack, it is pretty excellent. You can download it from ATAG's website, and will need it to play on their server. And flying bombers and attack aircraft is a vital role - all of the maps have ground and sea objectives. The bombers win the missions for their team. The fighters either go around claiming the glory, or they protect the bombers. For more fun, join up with a formation of AI bombers that is going out for mutual cover, and ask for fighter escort on Teamspeak.
You don't have to move very far to move your head in game, and TrackIR lets you play with all of the sensitivities/deadzones for the movement to get it to where you like it. So basically, when I look right in game, I turn my head a little bit to the right IRL while keeping my eyes on the screen in front of me. It is very easy and precise to control, as you can see in my videos. It was comfortable for me even on the small laptop screen I was using years ago.
Depends on what you want. Il-2 1946 has a huge planeset covering every theater of WWII. However, Il-2 CloD is a much more realistic sim - compared to CloD's complex engine management, 1946 is arcade. Also the better graphics, better flight and damage models, customizable belting and bomb fusing/etc without mods, and interactive cockpits. Don't get me wrong, I like 1946. I played it nonstop for years. But I prefer CloD's realism. Also, it's not that buggy for me anymore.
Great videos, it seems the game has improved a lot since last time I played a lot of months ago.Have they improved the visuals at all? I could not stand the damn jaggies and all the texture bugs(lines, black patches over water, texture fklikering, etc)
Yes mate you are right, i know perfectly that sensation !!!!! Even in the offline mode is difficult to shot with and without the zoom. Other important thing is the range of fire ( i hope this is correct name in english), that we can choose in the options menu between 0 and 500. Cheers and good luck !!!
Nice video.. I can't get the controls to work on mine? Plug in Joystick but nothing registers.
I've been wondering, is the online on this one huge map? For example instead of being a call of duty little cage to fight in, or is it more like ArmA where its a huge area that may be a battleground? Also, I thought the music fit perfectly lol. Although sometimes it did seem a little loud. Awesome nonetheless :D
great video, great music!
Good video, it does not matter if you are beginner or not. Have you ever tried Aces High IIWW flight simulator?
Hi, I have been into dogfighting of WW2 for quite some time and since this sim looks amazing, I want to play it. My question was; do you need a good PC for this? Myself, im on Mac (and have been all my life) but buying a game PC sometime soon. Thanks!
Not if you want 6DOF and the ability to lean in your cockpit and get a better view. IRL your head isn't locked into the exact position to get the perfect gunsight picture. If you look at a reflector gunsight (there's an F4U/F6F gunsight in the smithsonian in the WWII carrier plane section) you'll notice that it does indeed shift around like that when you move your head. Il-2 also simulates G-forces pressing you down in your seat, so you adjust your head farther to compensate during hard turns.
No, the game comes with a bunch, you don't really need Lowengrin's unless you are trying to create your own. The game comes with some Eastern Front and Pacific campaigns, and you can download new missions and campaigns from places online. I highly recommend modding 1946 though, the mods are great. The new Ultrapack is supposed to be really good, but I haven't tried it.
You seem to have this running well. Thanks for sharing.
Cont.
Also, know that Il-2 1946 has MUCH better single player. If you want to do dynamic campaigns, 1946 is the one you should choose for now, until the new series catches up. And I can't stress it enough, but make sure that your computer is up to par - having a good rig will erase a huge portion of the bugs and graphical issues that people encounter. Like I said, I haven't had any such bugs since I got my current computer, and my rig isn't even top of the line anymore.
Yes, all of my videos are at max settings with fraps running. I bought the game when it first came out as well, but my old computer couldn't play it unless graphics were all lowest. And then there were the bugs, which made me just wait until things cooled down before trying again. Now with my new computer, it's great. I think your computer should be able to run it fine. Maybe not with everything highest, but at least on high (maybe buildings on medium or something - you'll have to tweak it).
At the time this video was made I was running no mods. It was the most up to date official build as of the release date of the vid. Now, a year and a half later, I use Team Fusion's mod pack, though I haven't played in a while so I'm not sure what the current version is.
CPU is an i7 2600K, GPU is a GTX 580. The rest of the details of my rig are in my channel description.
Hey I have the game haven't been able to play yet my rig isn't good enough but I have 2 questions for you about the game, are there any mods you would recommend for it? The other is online would flying a bomber really help the team example if I bombed a radar station would it matter?
Yeah the 3.0 patch is really nice. You'll see me there my friend. I fly with the 5./JG27 Staffle.
Don't worry, no offense taken. I'm sure he means it as constructive criticism. That was my first online kill on CloD after all. The conversion from Il-2 1946 to CloD after a whole year of not playing any flight sims was not kind to my skill or my gunnery.
ok thanks for the info. I wanted to ask you about dynamic campaigns. How many of them are there for 1946 because I am only seeing one, Lowengrin. Do I have to download them in parts? Also, where is the best place to download new missions and/or campaigns? I am not that interested in getting new aircraft or mods, just maybe missions and campaigns people have made. thanks...
Why does the newer IL2's seem WAY easier than the first one? I play the first one only because my pc can't handle the others, and BOY you make it look easy. Although it doesn't show engine power(currently) and all... but I even wonder if there is? Do you use flaps? Do you have engine overheating? are there even stalls in IL2 Cliffs of Dover?
I want this game! Looks like the WW2 version of Rise of Flight!
hello canvas knight . amazing video . please tell me what your spechs ( hardware pc ) i need computer to play cliffs of dover . thanks
I use a joystick. You can't really play this game with mouse and keyboard. It's not a fancy joystick though, just a Logitech 3d pro. It's very cheap.
Where it starts to get expensive is when you look at the other stuff I have, like TrackIR 5. But TrackIR isn't necessary to get into the game, its just nice to have if you end up dedicating most of your playtime to flight sims and other games that can use it.
For Cliffs of Dover, you need a very good gaming PC. You don't need absolutely top of the line stuff anymore, but I'd recommend a GTX 580 vid card, and a good i7 processor. The older games in the series don't require as much, of course.
Hey, thanks for the info. It looks like it's time to start saving, but I was just wondering if you knew of any ways to play online (other than LAN) in the 1946 version?
Oh yeah, there are tons of online servers for 1946. What you need is a program called Hyberlobby. Google it and it will be the first result (the one with the hyperfighter address). You can see the difficulty settings on the servers too, so find a populated one that fits the level of realism you are looking for. My favorites were always the warbirds of prey servers (you can google them too, they have forums and stats).
Of course,I currently use a CH stick but my first one was Logitech. It did just fine.
good vid, I'm actually trying to start flying again, can you pleas tell me the joystics you use, and where i can find this game to buy and his addons. thkz
Is it used in the regard of 'a salute' rather than the word salute which is a french greeting?
You must be missing a step in the startup procedure. If you are flying a Bf-109 or Bf-110 you can just watch how I start up the planes in my videos and copy the steps. If its another plane or an RAF fighter then there are some tutorials on youtube that you might be able to find. Some are better than others, but hopefully that will let you start the engine.
thanks, i'll like to see you fly a fw-190, i haven't see any video of one in cod.
i love WW2 planes so i think i chose it, but with logitech extreme 3d pro can i fly ??
In the ending credits at the very end of the vid. Two songs.
Nice!
Yeah I bought it but I can't seem to get it to accept my joystick which is gay. Found some patches which help with the stutter as I can easily max the models out etc but also some posts talking about some compatibility issues with windows 7 and joysticks. Need to sort it out as the game looks mint. Got FSX Gold coming tomorrow as well, so looking forward to that and modding the hell out of it...different type of game mind.
For God's sake, what's wrong with the collimator? Aren't there a camera option that locks on it?
Good video.
I don't use anything fancy, just a cheap logitech 3d pro. The easiest way to get the game is off of Steam, or you can get a hard copy off of something like amazon.
I'm using a GTX 580 and an i7 2600k proc. Graphics settings are all maxed at 1080p resolution.
ace flying...
Nice flying...
Far as I'm concerned its the best sim out there but it takes time and practice to be good at it. You also need a smoking GPU to run it well. See you in the sky CanvasKnight.
what kinda setup do u use, joystick ir tracker and so on??
ohhhh, that explain everything. Well hopefully i can fly one soon, in the game i mean
Glitch mob.. very very nice choice
Thanks for that Angelo. Your comment was totally necessary wasn't it. Only thing you should be doing with your thumb is shoving it where the sun doesn't shine. Decent tune, CanvasKnight.
No, I highly doubt it. Those aren't really for gaming. A good i5 processor would probably do, but if you're serious about wanting to play graphics intensive games, especially ones that are severely demanding on processing power and video memory like the current generation of flight sims, you need an upgrade.
If graphics is what turns you on then go for CloD. If youre into planes in general then 1946 is the correct path. That and... CloD is full of bugs.
But I would seriously recommend some device for head tracking.Have a look at Freetrack.
Last time I'm going to answer a comment about the music. It's "subjective value." What sounds good to you, is trash to somebody else. Some of you like the music. Some of you won't. That's fine. There is a mute button. I don't get paid to make these videos for you. They are brought to you for free, without advertisements, at the expense of my free time. I'll put whatever music I want, or none at all. Not one of you music nitpickers has suggested what kind of music they would prefer. /rant
The music is great, I'm not sure what your problem with it is.
but why did you add this metallic horrified music?
Spitfire pilot was more Rookie lake You ;-)))
No, as in "a salute." The french greeting is spelled salut without an 'e' as far as I know.
No, I haven't played it. Heard about it though. Looked decent enough, but if I remember right it required a subscription, which was a huge turn-off when Il-2 was available as an alternative.
already have one, but thanks for advice
Too Fast the Spitfire and Too Slow the Messerschmitt!!!!!
this game and DCS which one should i buy :D
TrackIR 5 and a cheap logitech 3d pro joystick. Nothing fancy aside from the TrackIR.
the music doesn´t really fit in
what is a configuration of your computer?
Not really, I paid to build that computer with extra money from my part time jobs while I work through college. Same for the TrackIR, which I've had for a few years now. I'm sure you can afford it if you really want it. Just gotta save up, that's all.
The Spitfire pilot was not very effective and made some mistakes. He should have forced you into tighter turns to gain advantage on you. And you performed some poor aiming which caused you to miss some opportunities and gave him chance to gain advantage. But these are easier said than done. Nice vid other than the music.
my comp cant compete with this game so im getting a new one :)
Nice video, but you're lucky that Spitfire's pilot was a beginner, because othervwise you would never have win this fight with such manouvers :p
