When a big toy company tells you what you're backing in a crowdfund, isn't that a kind of promise? Apparently not...

That is one of the biggest flaws/hair pulling out moments concerning pre-orders (and why I've given up on them and will take my chances in stores). I have tried to PO 3-4 figures less than an hour after the window was open only to log in and find the item sold out. Once the POs were filled, the figures appeared on eBay at a minimum of twice the original cost, most often much, much more than that! There have been a few times I've found an item on the pegs before my preorder was filled, so I ended up cancelling the PO anyway.

Crowd funding is for startups. ONLY. Explain to me how matel or Hasbro is a start up. They have existed for DECADES, and these collector lines are based on series they have had for Decades. They can only escape smarmy if it's totally new and completely unproven. I have yet to see a totally new unproven concept get pitched as a crowd fund by mattel or Hasbro.

    Here's the thing.
YOU AS A CONSUMER HAVE ALL THE POWER.
Many corporations want you to think otherwise.
If you want a thing, BUY IT.
if you do not get the thing you bought, CONTEST IT.
Buy it with a credit card, and dispute the charge. Make them prove that you got what you paid for.
    PUSH BACK.
If enough of us do this, the balance of power will shift.
Be smart in your consumption. Do not settle. Make them FIGHT for your money.

$30 refund for two WWE elite figures is indeed a gyp. They retail for $24-25 EACH unless they're on discount. I mean, there are weird exceptions like the time I got a Cowboy Bob Orton for $1 at one of those discount bin stores, but for new and exclusive figures that can never and will never get discounted like the ones you get in stores, the total refund should have been closer to $50 imo.

The whole toy community/industry is just f'd up, more than it's ever been. Crowdfunding a multi-billion dollar corporation (whether Hasbro or Mattel) is bad enough and then not to get your product is even more absurd. It's not like the tooling is destroyed. I didn't get in on the Eternia because I wanted it to fail, so they wouldn't use it as an excuse to raise the prices on everything. It succeeded and the next exclusive figure from them was 30 dollars instead of 18.
The community itself is an ouroboros. It eats itself.

While watching this video, I kept looking at the Grizzlor on the table, and how I per-ordered my figures (not the limited version, but the next day made to order version). Now I've bought from them before. I bought 2 exclusive Tri-Klops, and 1 Mysteries of Castle Grayskull Deluxe Accessories Pack. Both Tri-Klops figures arrived, but no accessory set. There was no email from Mattel Creations explaining if there was any issue. I had to email them twice over a number of months before they came back to me, and simply said "Sorry it sold out, and we didn't charge you". That's it? I missed out on Wun-Dar, but they put it up again, and cancelled the order the next day saying "there wasn't enough". I bought one from a scalper (how stupid of me), and they put him back up months later, under the tag "we've listened to the fans". I mean how are we to keep up with this junk? I've ordered 2 of these Grizzlors as "made to order". There's no indication of when we will get these, and all the possibility they'll be cancelled... and ringing in my ears is your comments from another video about how these companies are sitting on our money for a year making a profit. I think we need our heads checked. Again, thanks for the reality check I and all other collectors so need to hear.

@Retroblasting It’s not just the crowdfunding that’s an issue-convention executives also have this issue. I purchased the Transformers Legacy “A Hero is Born” Alpha Trion and Orion Pax two pack from Hasbro Pulse. My set came with a bunch of QC issues, primarily chipped paint.
Despite Hasbro having the set as still in stock on their page, Customer Care told me it was not. They told me they could send me an equivalent value item…which ended up not being the case. This was an $89 set and they sent me a Kingdom Galvatron, which is a $50 figure and currently a figure on sale for $35 at Target…

The thing is I know from experience that these companies will buckle if people actually had the guts to apply pressure. Mego started a program about a year ago where they'd offer highly requested for a single week, after which they'd be gone for good. They started preorders at the beginning of every week with no end date stated. People quickly realized Mego had essentially started a $60+ per week subscription, and their numbers tanked, most figs only selling a little over 1000 units. Mego ended up cancelling the program after a few months and issuing what was essentially an apology.
This wasn't before several members of the "community" professed their undying gratitude to Mego, with one person (who actually works for Mego, I might add) even straight up admitting he didn't care about anyone other than himself. Fortunately they were a vocal minority.

This might possibly be my favourite video you've ever done. The empathy and poignant sentiments resonate so much. Like with everything unshamefully overly politicized; with its polarizing camps of team blue or red, it's the same in the action figure collecting community. Such a breath of fresh air to have ppl in the community with large platforms (or growing ones) like yourself, LaserPants, Nostalgia Unboxed, TalkerArt, Articulated Ninja, Analog Toys, and Mad Hatter Reviews.
People that align themselves with what's right for us and genuineness, not with whatever bullshit can divide us even more. And no backtracking, shifting to wherever the wind shall blow that day like certain other extremely well-known RUclipsrs. I mean, call a spade a spade, but don't instigate or misconstrue rational messages from upstanding fellas to think you need to fall in line with any non-objectively true narrative. I called customer service and was told to send the jeep back and hope that whoever got my Sgt Slaughter sends him back so that they can send the correct items out. The rep told me up front that the only way I would get the figure I ordered was that the person who received it had to send it back. He emphasized that there was no possible way to make anymore and I would be lucky to actually get the figure. He said my chances were better since hot wheels collectors are serious and that someone will want to do everything they can to get the jeep. I sent the jeep back and 2 months later the Sgt Slaughter showed up with no notice. I was happy it all worked out.

I wonder how he paid for it. Cause frankly, if he used his credit card, he should've just disputed the entirety of the charge with his credit card company. That "contract" that actually a promise is two-way street - you promise to give moi product and I promise to pay you. I had to basically give up collecting MOTU Origins figures because characters like Trap-Jaw were almost all scalped, meanwhile I still see Evil Lyn collecting dust on the pegs at the store, because they over-shipped her almost three to one.

I feel bad for the person this happened to. But if the product is something I really want, I'll probably put in to get it, such as the Mattel arena, needed Doink and the ring, but Macho was the selling point for me, he's what put it over the top and made me decide to go ahead and order. This is why I try to avoid buying modern these days unless I'm absolutely compelled to. It's like hacking your way through a jungle of advanced calculus. Forget the "exclusives", forget the "licenses" to specific stores, forget "pre-orders", forget the "crowd-funding" by multi-billion dollar companies - just inject some super-serum into distribution and put a ton of items on the shelves. This paradigm is not just a functioning system. The *one* piece I pre-ordered recently was the Hasbro NERF "Aliens" Pulse Rifle. 1) It arrived in toy stores BEFORE it was delivered to pre-ordering customers. 2) It was shipped out a full month *later* than was promised (after a year of waiting). 3) The "movie-accurate sound effects" were a blatant lie, as neither one is even close to the movie sound effects - which was hard to even gauge, considering that the rifle sounds like a vacuum cleaner. 4) You have to *take the batteries out* whenever you're not using it. Unless something truly blows me away, I've just given up on modern - and it's not entirely because of a lack of quality all the time - it's simply because the process is needlessly disappointing and bizarre.

I backed this New Gen Arena for the whole package, and while I thankfully got everything promised, this situation sucks and I'd probably raise all kinds of Hell had it been me. I did have to contact Mattel support before on a broken figure but they made it right by me, and the nature of the beast is that everyone's experience is different. NECA couldn't help me on a broken King Kong but I fixed it myself, but I digress.
I was one of the first backers because I genuinely wanted everything offered, Macho was just a bonus. $30 is not enough to substitute such a rare item, one of the rarest in the Ultimate Edition range. Even at face value, a normal UE is anywhere from $30-35 with tax, so $15 credit each is a slap in the face. Not even enough to cop one in the aftermarket, the lowest I've seen is $70, more than twice what he was offered.
I've been flying the Mattel flag for years but I also know BS when I see it, and this is farm fresh bull. Dude should've gotten what was promised and if it wasn't feasibly possible, get a partial refund. It's the danger of the early bird shipping separately from the main offering, it muddies the waters more IMO.
TL;DR: This is unacceptable and whoever's in charge of distribution/logistics needs to get a grip

I've seen the recent Victory Saber Haslab has had the entirety of the orders for Taiwan end up being cancelled and refunded and those people given a Free Legacy "Hero is Born" set to compensate as well as a number of Victory Leo's ending up being mis-assembled with the wrong parts and its very much a "Well I got mine and haha tough luck" situation from the collectors.
This is stuff that shouldn't be happening for the price that is being asked for crowd funding.
I am also aware that the NZ Order for Haslab Sentinels was cancelled, I can't remember if people actually got refunded for that either and the only reason it came out was because a TV Show that helps people with getting Fair Treatment and Resolutions got involved. I believe Hasbro's answer to it was "We didn't get the order", which is strange when they did get their money.

Thank you for sharing the experience of this person. I do collect the Origins Motu figures myself, and I don't like the Mattel Creations site at all, because it's a mostly a list of sold out items. I did order the Grizzlor and Wunder as made to order and it will probably still be 7 more months before they will be shipped, but the way they do everything isn't consumer friendly, and even worse when you don't live in the US like me. But after I'm done collecting these I will probably avoid the Mattel brand for that exact same reason.

I love what you brought up at the 16 minute mark about Toy "Communities" being lies. I'm in a fairly good Facebook group based around the Mythic Legions line of figures called the Cabal. Its better than most groups but there is still an undercurrent of the same stuff you brought up in this video. Its a giant circle jerk until something pops up about exclusives being a bad idea, limits being placed of online figure sales so more people can get them, or scalpers pricing stuff too high. These topics bring out the ugly (and more than likely the real side) of a lot of the people in the group. They don't actually care if you get a figure for a good price, they only want to use the group to raise awareness of a line so they can feast on the newer consumers of the product. One of the major people in the group that everyone just loves to death (and recently had a figure named after them) once said that he should be able to buy any amount of the figures out of a limited pool because he "works hard". That's when I knew that even that group is the same as most others.

  • @shockwave7513

Yeah, I really don't see how anyone could defend Mattel on this. Whatever the early bird number was, let's say 8,000, them they KNEW they'd have to produce at least 8,000 Macho Man figures for this set! And I say "at least" because they'd probably have to produce more than that to cover possible production errors and such, but the point is that THEY set the number of how many of these figures would have to be produced. If the 8,000 number wasn't met in the prescribed time then NOBODY was getting Macho Man, but if it was then 8,000 people, and supposedly ONLY 8,000 people would be getting the figure.
Mattel set the amount, and the fact that that THEY couldn't even fulfill that number is bullshit.

Hey Michael, excellent video. Thank you for all of your thoughts. I agree 100% with what you say about community. • @christianbrix4311
    @christianbrix4311 Год назад +4

I only care about one toy line, GI Joe, but I watch all your videos, and this one really made me sit up in my seat. I'm so glad I was a child in the 80s, when you could walk down the toy aisle, pick out a Skystriker for instance, take it home and open it, then if there was something missing or wrong with it, take it back to the shop and exchange it - ALL IN THE SAME DAY! Today's toy market with the never-ending stream of pre-orders, crowd-funding, year-long waits for already paid-for products, toy aisles with nothing in them but Funko Pops and tumbleweed, shocking customer service, and downright awful quality control would be laughable if it weren't so infuriating. I recently saw a guy get hundreds of abusive messages online because he found six Vipers in a shop and bought five of them, thereby 'not leaving enough for the next guy'. It's not insulin! Why isn't it Hasbro's responsibility to produce enough for everyone?!? 35 years ago he would have been the envy of every kid on the block, today he's public enemy number one. He wasn't a scalper, by the way, but incidentally, the only reason scalpers exist is because of how modern toy companies operate. These companies are, as you've pointed out countless times, despicable entities who don't care about their consumer at all and take no responsibility when they inevitably screw things up. All this is coming from someone who only collects vintage and therefore doesn't have to deal with these cretins at all, so if I'm this angry, I can only imagine how the rest of you must be feeling. You have my sympathy.

I remember in the early 2000's seeing an advert in a magazine for online sales of real scale wrestling rings. I don't know if they were also available in shops anywhere at the time. They were official WWE products but it was not a crowd funding. They made multiple variations of this scale over several years. If they could do that then there really is no justification for crowd funding now.
If you bought one of these earlier rings or even for anyone getting this latest one, it would be useful if spare parts ie: ring skirts, steel steps, posts, turnbuckle pads & ropes were also sold separately. If you already own the real scale Wrestlemania 1 ring, then the only difference with this latest model is the ring skirt, a lot of money just for that!
