As a Southern girl, I grew up eating “congealed salads” which are basically fruit, nuts, and the occasional bit of diced celery set in jello. They were meant to be fancy, not health food, but to me, my grandmother’s cranberry congealed salad (whole berry cranberry sauce, diced apples, diced pears, diced orange sections, and chopped pecans held together with cherry jello) is a Thanksgiving family tradition I enjoy (and as far as Thanksgiving desserts go, it might actually have a little nutritional value). My dad however is on team sugar free jello and I don’t know how he eats that stuff. Just give me a couple squares of dark chocolate for a dessert and skip the aspartame and unnatural colors. In my culture (I’m Belarusian) cottage cheese is super popular! When I was a child I ate it everyday. We have amazing cottage cheese pancakes called syrniki. If anyone wants to try them here’s a recipe: 115g cottage cheese, 1 egg, 30g flour, salt and sweetener of choice (I use 2 measuring spoons of stevia). Make small balls out of the mixture, flatten, and fry in a pan (I cover mine with a lid for softer pancakes), don’t forget to flip. Should feel firm on the outside and medium soft on the inside. Serve with sour cream and berry conserves. 😋

I read a very short magazine snippet once called "The Joy Diet" and it was from the early 2000s, I think. And I love it because it really does talk about how the food we consume should bring us joy and why force ourselves to eat foods that don't
I've got to say that I'm so happy cottage cheese rated high, I'm a New Englander who might just eat 5 lbs or more a year! Love the stuff! And I really liked this video, thanks again.
Kellogg was also a doctor who developed granola to feed patients in his sanitarium (old timey rehab). One of those patients was a man named POST, who stole the recipe to create Post cereal co. Kellogg's brother ended up rolling the granola into corn flakes and competed with Post.
this is the earliest i’ve ever been!!! Yay! can’t wait to see the video tomorrow morning while having my toasts for breakfast, I enjoy that moment a lot 💛
I love this video style since I’m not really into RUclips diet influencers so I don’t actually recognize most any of the people you do reviews of so this is a bit more to the point! Love it alll, tough. I’ve found some great channels through your review videos. ✌🏻☺️
Ok guys. I LOOOVE Abbey and I just can't get enough of her. She's my favorite RUclips influencer to watch right now. Hands down Abbey is the queen and the best! I'm sure we all binge her shows, but who is the second best? When all of Abbeys episodes are watched, what channel do you go to?
I love cottage cheese! It’s one of the few dairy options that doesn’t upset my stomach. It’s got protein and fat, and I eat it with berries for breakfast for fiber. You could call it a hunger crushing combo 😉
Rice cakes are great for me when I am not too hungry but need to much on something. I top them with hummus, feta, tomatoes, sweet peppers and olives. Sometimes I'll put a bit of spinach on it too. Cottage cheese I really like with a baked sweet potato.
Cottage cheese is actually a very common and much bought product in the Netherlands! It's called kwark here, and it's seriously yummy and comes in a thousand different varieties. We eat it just as it is, maybe with some fruit or granola (muesli), and there's your breakfast! Absolutely yummy
i got shamed at work when I was eating rice cakes because everyone was like "eeeww why are you eating that nasty diet food?! you're on a diet ?! you don't need to lose weight!!!" and i was like "...but these sweet chili oil ones are so tasty!" haha. I treat them as chips or as an almost tasteless vessel lol. I love the caramel ones with peanut butter and bananas on top
This is so interesting to listen to. Almost none of these have been considered diet- or health foods in my country. In scandinavia no one would have been able to afford a grapefruit diet. As a kid it was strictly a special sweet treat. And rice cakes are actually considered more on the unhealthy side, because of the lack of nutrients. It was like a cake thing treat in my home. I really like rice cakes though. But if you want to be healthy, you eat traditional rye bread with toppings, as we've done for hundreds of years:)
Oh god my grandmother is still obsessed with grapefruits as a diet food. She has half a grapefruit every single morning with her breakfast and thinks anyone who doesn’t is crazy. She thinks it will keep you skinny...
Hey Abbey, I love love love your channel! You are my absolute favourite RUclipsr to watch. I’m studying nutrition and I really wanted to ask you if you had any tips for connecting the actual nutrition components of a case to the pathophysiology...there is just soooo much to learn and I’m trying to organize my notes to help but since I am only just learning, it feels overwhelming to try and remember all about nutrients, diseases, body processes (especially all the chemistry components....) etc! I know you understand all of this and I’m sure it gets easier with time and practice but I would really appreciate any study tips :) 💕💕 by the way you are glowing in this video!
All your cottage cheese combos sound so good. I have mixed it with pineapple which is delicious, but my go to is mixing it with tomato, cucumber, a drizzle of EVOO and a dash of pepper. So good.
I only heard of “rice cakes” bc my friends thought I was wierd for having them as a meal and then I realized they were talking about the cracker things and I was talking about the Korean rice cake that’s similar to a mochi
As someone with ulcerative colitis, rice cakes are a life saver breakfast food when I'm having a flare up! Top it with peanut butter and you have a filling but low FODMAP food for healing your gut 😋
Rice cakes w/ peanut butter and banana has been my go to snack for many years because it’s so easy to store at my desk at work, quick to prep and it tastes amazing.
We have a breakfast combo at our house lovingly referred to a “chobany breakfast” yes the misspelling is intended- you must pronounce it to rhyme with Albany. One cup chobani yogurt, 1/4 cup granola, and strawberries blueberries or cherries. If you use frozen fruit the yogurt starts to freeze and they taste like those weird frozen diet cheesecakes my mom used to get when I was 10.
I love rice cakes! The texture is bomb, especially when they get kinda soggy in some spots from runny eggs. So much better than bread when you want something lighter!
I do have a question: if they are rated based on nutritional value, why are the rice cakes rated so high? It doesn't seem like they give you that much nutrition. Love this video :) (granola is my favourite)
Thanks Abbey - interesting video. I like hearing about nutritional value of foods. All those foods (apart from granola) were staple foods of my late mum who was always on a diet. I can't bear cottage cheese now - give me some proper cheddar!!
I used to always put butter on rice cakes and warm them, and swore it tasted like popcorn when I was little. It was pretty delish, idk how it would taste on a adult palate, I might try it. I always hated grapefruit as a child, grapefruits were to oranges like oatmeal raisin cookies are to chocolate chip cookies. I accidentally ate one recently, after being fooled into thinking it was a big juicy orange, and it was actually not that bad, honestly it was kind of good. It had some sweetness and bitter aftertaste but was way more enjoyable than I expected. I expected it to be like eating a lemon. I've been vegan since my mid-teens and I've had never had cottage cheese before. I'm super curious what it tastes like, I have to find a good dairy free knock off. Jello is fun to eat with fruit pieces in it, pretty boring on its own. Granola is my guilty pleasure, especially warm granola with soy milk. I love the fancy flavored ones: pumpkin spice, maple nut, dark chocolate and peanut butter etc. Anyways thanks for the informative video and I hope your postpartum recovery is going well.
Hi Abbey! I'd love a video on Madelaine Petsch and her latest what I eat in a day! As someone with an ED past, I got a little worried by all the praise in the comments cause I felt she ate very little for her active lifestyle. She's vegan, as am I, so no shade (I also love Madelaine), but her day is very healthy and felt quite low cal. A lot of young people look up to her so I feel it would be good to talk about. Thank you for your amazing content! ❤❤
I’m not very fond of rice cakes but I did eat puffed wheat cakes instead. A little more taste to them, just a tiny bit ‘ nutty’ Maybe? Haven’t seen them in forever. But I would appreciate if you might comment on a similar food which has a bit more taste but that I use like you suggested using rice cakes. I eat Wasa crackers with guacamole for a snack. I found that during a recent time of high stress I could not keep tortilla chips in the house without inhaling half a bag at a time. So I stopped buying them. Because Wasa are bigger in size and spreading guac (or peanut butter) on them made them more like toast, it was much easier for me to keep to a reasonable amount (2-3 which is 20-60 calories) plus they’re made of whole grain. Or at least the light rye ones I buy are. Oh another diet food I remember from my youth was Melba Toast. They were so dry! And I rather doubt they used whole grains for them. And not filling at all. Quite tiny so very easy to eat too many which also meant too much cheese since that’s what many people ate on them. You know, I think a Wasa is probably about the size of 6-8 of them, whereas Melba Toast is about the size (or a little smaller than a chip). Something about that size difference makes the Melbas too easy to eat by the handfuls.
I should have said Wasa Crispbread as they do not call them crackers. I just think of them that way. But of course there are other crispbreads as well.
I'm still working my way through your intuitive eating videos so I'm sorry of this is already covered, I was just wondering if you had any intuitive eating tips for working shifts. I'm a nurse I work 12.5 hour shifts day and night I have to make my packup the night before and I generally eat the same things all the time as I know they are easy and keep well, I usually have yogurt and fruit with nuts for first break and then either soup or a salad for second break but then because I'm so prepared on my work days on my days off I flounder and I struggle with what to eat. I can't find a balance. My ward is a unit on its own and I don't have the time or money to go to the canteen as its so far away from the ward. Any ideas?! Thank you for your content I really do love it and it really helps me.
I did the hardboiled egg and grapefruit diet back in the '70s. Needless to say, the diet didn't work and it made me constipated. I still like grapefruit, but I now can't look at a hardboiled egg without a decent amount of mayo along with it.
In the kindergarten I worked at we stopped giving rice cakes as snacks, because they are under suspicion to carry a lot of arsen, because rice itself is slightly arsenic and through the fabricating process it gets concentrated in rice cakes. Switched to corn cakes, which are more delicious anyway
I would really love to hear you talk more about different foods that people associate with dieting. Maybe you could also do a video where you "un-demonize" certain foods. I would find these helpful.
Please could you do a video on your thoughts on reverse dieting? And the ability to increase calories to higher than ‘maintenance’ through reverse dieting.. missfitandnerdy says you can increase your maintenance calories to almost as high as you want them?
Cottage cheese is the bomb and I will fight anyone that disagrees. It can be sweet, it can be sweet, it can be anything. Just be sure to get the whole fat cause the fat free sucks. If you're really ambitious it's not that hard to make and then you can say you're a cheesemaker. But if you don't want to make it, store bought is fine too.
My toddler and husband love rice cakes. Last week we ran out of all our normal snack foods. Apples, bananas, strawberry, carrots, peanut butter, and rice cakes. I had to take the toddler with me to the grocery store. As we we’re going down the isles we practiced our food words with things that are in her usual diet. When we practiced rice cakes one of the store employees said “yes, say cardboard.” I thought it was hilarious. BTW: have a snack ready to hand to the toddler, for mine it is an apple. They become a lot easier to manage and keep to your list.
My love for jelly will never end lol Note on generic gelatin/jelly that you have to make on your own: -Read the label, you can find jelly that uses seaweed, is flavorless, and has no sugar (no sugar alternatives). You dont have to get the ones made of beef jelly or the ones that have flavor already. -Use that one to control the amount of sugar, flavor, and the texture of the jelly. -You can buy flavoring like vanilla extracts or blanch pandan/whatever dessert herb in the water you use. Yes to flavor, no to too much sugar! -There are powder ones and ones that come in blocks -It’s great as a snack - We make our own and suspend fruits in it while it’s liquid. When it solidifies, we eat it with some sort of milk (yoghurt, almond, and fresh coconut milk are great options) and fresh coconut. :)
After watching a fair few of ur videos talking about intivite eating I decided to try it on the 1 day doing this while on slimming world so still being mindful. But before I was planning my meals plus snacks a week in advance then getting bored or craving different stuff so tried it today and so far I've been eating when hungry only and feeling good and satisfied when usually after using my syns some for snacks I would be dying for dinner thinking I was hungry when I was probably just bored .

I read a very short magazine snippet once called "The Joy Diet" and it was from the early 2000s, I think. And I love it because it really does talk about how the food we consume should bring us joy and why force ourselves to eat foods that don't
That's great!
Egg salad on rice cakes sounds like a great idea! Very satisfying and I like to make egg salad with avocado. Im so going to try that. Thanks.
Hope you enjoy it!
I would love to see this with current diet fads
Thanks for the suggestion!
The tomato basil rice cakes were the best ones imo. Also, the plain ones are good if you put some peanut butter and green apple on top.
Yum!
I've got to say that I'm so happy cottage cheese rated high, I'm a New Englander who might just eat 5 lbs or more a year! Love the stuff! And I really liked this video, thanks again.
I loved this style of video!
Also I've seen loads of stuff on oil pulling of late and would love to see your assessment of it.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Kellogg was also a doctor who developed granola to feed patients in his sanitarium (old timey rehab). One of those patients was a man named POST, who stole the recipe to create Post cereal co. Kellogg's brother ended up rolling the granola into corn flakes and competed with Post.
And the Kellogg brothers were quite strange with an unfortunate life long feud. They do make some good cereal tho 😂
Thank you for the info!
@@priscilaassis5704 we love a good food drama
he also thought that corn flakes and other bland food would cure masturbation
I've seen brown rice cakes advertised as a whole grain option that are 2x-3x more expensive. Nutritionally worth the $$$?
this is the earliest i’ve ever been!!! Yay! can’t wait to see the video tomorrow morning while having my toasts for breakfast, I enjoy that moment a lot 💛
Yum! So glad
I love this video style since I’m not really into RUclips diet influencers so I don’t actually recognize most any of the people you do reviews of so this is a bit more to the point! Love it alll, tough. I’ve found some great channels through your review videos. ✌🏻☺️
Glad you enjoyed it!
I loved this video format! it's very informative, but not tiring
So glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you! ❤️
Yes, well done. I love the history of foods, and It's fun to see your rankings in relationship to various Foods. Please send more.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Sounds delicious!
Yes I like this video and would like to see more of the nutritional stuff.
Glad you enjoyed it!
You’re such a queen!! All this awesome content you created before giving birth!? You’re amazing!
Thank you ❤️
Cottage cheese is actually a very common and much bought product in the Netherlands!
I recently discovered “everything bagel” flavor rice cakes and they are my JAM
Lovely video Abbey! Enjoy your weekend with your boys. Xx
Thank you!
Love this informative type video, thank you for sharing Abbey! 😊
So glad!
My age is showing from the knowledge I have of all these trends 😂
😂
I was thinking the same thing😂
My mom has one of those jello cookbooks! The recipes are terrifying 🤢
I know right!
Would love a discussion about the trendy seeds like chia and flax that fitness RUclipsrs rave about
Thanks for the suggestion!
Oh god my grandmother is still obsessed with grapefruits as a diet food. She has half a grapefruit every single morning with her breakfast and thinks anyone who doesn’t is crazy. She thinks it will keep you skinny...
😫😫
But is she skinny? Because if she is and she likes it, let your nan be
Hey Abbey, I love love love your channel!
So good.
Yum!
Sounds great!
I liked this video style a lot! And lthough I also enjoy your long videos, short & sweet is nice!
So glad you enjoyed it!
Rice cakes w/ peanut butter and banana has been my go to snack for many years because it’s so easy to store at my desk at work, quick to prep and it tastes amazing.
Yum!
Sounds great!
That's one of my favorite breakfasts. I use cooked oatmeal and add chobani and frozen fruit.
I love rice cakes! The texture is bomb, especially when they get kinda soggy in some spots from runny eggs. So much better than bread when you want something lighter!
Yum!
My mother in law told me about the cabbage soup diet. That generally sounds so horrible, especially to me as I don’t like cabbage.
😫😫
I do have a question: if they are rated based on nutritional value, why are the rice cakes rated so high? It doesn't seem like they give you that much nutrition.
Love this video :) (granola is my favourite)
plain they’re 6/10
I think 6 means they're average... Not really interesting, but not unhealthy either.
My mom used to toast rice cakes with cheese on top in the toaster oven. That makes a really yummy snack!
Yum!
I've done that... really good!
Thanks Abbey - interesting video. I like hearing about nutritional value of foods. All those foods (apart from granola) were staple foods of my late mum who was always on a diet. I can't bear cottage cheese now - give me some proper cheddar!!
0:52 SERIOUSLY! I am SO glad you said that! Flavor, ECONOMIC, cultural, social considerations might make a difference to an individual.
Glad that part was helpful!
Thank you for sharing your experiences! I'm glad the view was informative
Hey, Abbey! Can you do a video about the difference between “regular” foods and organic?
Thanks for the suggestion!
I liked this!
Don't scold me, but I did the "mayo clinic diet" this summer. ( you know, boiled eggs, grapefruit, salad, steak) ugh!
Like your content.
Oh no 😫
I’m not very fond of rice cakes but I did eat puffed wheat cakes instead.
My mom practically raised me on all these diets
I really love rice cakes. I put pb, banana, coco nibs, drizzle of agave, cinnamon and hemp hearts on them
I'm still working my way through your intuitive eating videos so I'm sorry of this is already covered, I was just wondering if you had any intuitive eating tips for working shifts.
I haven't covered this topic yet but it's on the list to discuss!
@@AbbeysKitchen thank you 🙏
I did the hardboiled egg and grapefruit diet back in the '70s. Needless to say, the diet didn't work and it made me constipated. I still like grapefruit, but I now can't look at a hardboiled egg without a decent amount of mayo along with it.
Thank you for sharing!
True, thank you for sharing
I would really love to hear you talk more about different foods that people associate with dieting. Maybe you could also do a video where you "un-demonize" certain foods. I would find these helpful.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Please could you do a video on your thoughts on reverse dieting? And the ability to increase calories to higher than ‘maintenance’ through reverse dieting.. missfitandnerdy says you can increase your maintenance calories to almost as high as you want them?
Thanks for the suggestion
Loved this video!! So interesting
So glad!
If i eat Rice cake with legumes, would it be healthy? Some cakes have whole beans or mushed beans inside them..and I love it
Very informative information Abbey. Thanks ✌🏾
So glad!
Aloha from Oahu, My favorite snack is organic Greek plain yogurt from Costco with Gogi berries fills me up with plenty of protein and vitamin A
Yum!
Agreed!
Unpopular opinion, but rice cakes and liverwurst as a spread is a great snack. Hits the salty, crunchy craving just right.
Yum!
I feel this! On my bad days I used to eat a giant bowl of sugar free jelly for dinner. Can’t stand the sight of it now!
My love for jelly will never end lol
Note on generic gelatin/jelly that you have to make on your own:
-Read the label, you can find jelly that uses seaweed, is flavorless, and has no sugar (no sugar alternatives).
-There are powder ones and ones that come in blocks
-It’s great as a snack - We make our own and suspend fruits in it while it’s liquid. When it solidifies, we eat it with some sort of milk (yoghurt, almond, and fresh coconut milk are great options) and fresh coconut. :)
I love eating chocolate covered rice cakes. They are seriously bomb!
Yum!
wait that sounds so good omg
After watching a fair few of ur videos talking about intivite eating I decided to try it on the 1 day doing this while on slimming world so still being mindful. But before I was planning my meals plus snacks a week in advance then getting bored or craving different stuff so tried it today and so far I've been eating when hungry only and feeling good and satisfied when usually after using my syns some for snacks I would be dying for dinner thinking I was hungry when I was probably just bored .
Hi Abbey. Quick question Lemon water true or false! And does eating fruit as dessert after dinner is it bad for weight 9lost ?

Thank you! Please email me abbey@abbeyskitchen.com !
Gonna get some Jello soon, haha. You're wholesome!! Thanks for the video, loved it. Nutrition history is always welcome
Glad you enjoyed it!
I tricked myself to love all these foods as a teenager (except grapefruit... yuck!) I still eat them all the time. If I think about it I only really tolerate them because I feel I should. None of them I truly love as much as a peanut butter and banana sandwich or a frozen snickers bar (my true fave snacks!)
Abbey I really do love how much I’ve learnt about myself from your videos. Thank you!
Frozen snickers is better than s**

On your point on high sodium cottage cheese - what do you think of salt alternatives like Diet Rite salt that say they have 50% less sodium? I'm trying to watch my salt intake but am not sure about potassium chloride as an alternative
I've started talking to my husband about the "hunger crushing combo" pretty much every time I cook...
I love this video style !!

Can you make a video about calorie dense foods (preferably vegan friendly 😊)? I just got on adderall for my adhd and I’m struggling to eat food. I take a multivitamin but I don’t want to lack any other nutrition
On the list to discuss!
Yes!!! Strange foamy crunch, I love rice cakes!!!! Definitely don’t use them as a diet food, cause 1) that’s silly and 2) I have to resist eating the whole
package, they’re so yummy 😂

I was recommended a video from Garbanzo Girl the other day where she makes a huge salad and eats it over a couple days.
I don't know why but this video was a HUGE trigger for my ED anxiety; but she also makes great points about using it to get your RDI of fruit and veg. I would be really interested to hear your thoughts!
I'm sorry it was triggering for you. I'll have a look at that

Idk if this is the same concept as jello but could you also talk about gummies in your next one? (Like fruit snacks). As a fighter I've always heard that gummies are one of the only things I can eat before competing because its basically pure sugar and wont make me gain weight before weigh-ins. I'm just curious lol🙂

grapefruit in a salad? wow never tried that, that sounds super delicious, thanks
Sadly I’ve used the grapefruit years ago when I did terrible diets. I actually genuinely love rice cakes though. Put some hummus or pb on them... I think it’s the crunch 😋
