5 Knots You Need To Know! Best Fishing Knots Made Easy!

  • Learn a couple of these easy knots and you'll be able to catch fish anywhere in the world! We choose our knots based on ease of tying and consistent results. You don't need special tools and you don't need to use your knees and toes to help tie them. These knots are EASY!
    Today Tim is showing the 5 knots we use for all of our fishing. The 3 "Line-To-Lure" knots are the San Diego Jam knot, Palomar Knot, and Uni Knot. The two "Line-To-Line" (leader) knots are the Double Uni Knot and the Double Blood Knot.
    Every time "knots" come up everyone seems to have an opinion. Some people insist on tying incredibly complex knots. Others prefer knots that require special tools. Some anglers just tie whatever knot their grandpa taught them because it works... most of the time. We choose our knots based on a handful of variables. The knot must be easy to tie on the water and can't take an excessive amount of time. It must work with a variety of lines and line sizes. And most important, you must be able to visibly verify that it is tied correctly.
    Now that you know the knots to tie, let's talk about line. There are different lines for different purposes. Below is a breakdown of all our favorite fishing lines for different circumstances. The links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each line.
    Braided Lines... We use these lines for the vast majority of our fishing. Braided line is incredibly strong, has very little stretch, and is very thin. The downside of braid is that its highly visible in the water. For power fishing techniques like frogging, topwater, flipping, etc braid is amazing! It gives you incredible power to set the hook hard and drag the fish away from cover. In these situations its okay to tie the braided line direct to your lure. If you're fishing slower or in clearer water you'll want to add a monofilament or fluorocarbon leader to reduce visibility.
    Favorite Braid (Ultra Thin) Power Pro Maxcuatro: bit.ly/2clBRiQ
    Budget Braid Power Pro Original: bit.ly/2aFg46b
    Finesse Braid (Spinning Rods) Sunline SX-1: bit.ly/2tn8EzQ
    Smooth Braid Sufix 832: bit.ly/2ae93Ji
    Fluorocarbon Lines... Fluorocarbon is the best of both worlds between braid and mono. It has good sensitivity, strength, and is virtually invisible in the water. Its a great stand alone line for all fishing applications (except for topwater because it tends to sink) but it truly shines as a finesse line. It can be used as a main line or as a leader (Sniper for finesse leader, FC100 for power fishing leader).
    Finesse Applications Sunline Sniper FC: bit.ly/2p7fxju
    Power Applications Sunline Assassin FC: bit.ly/2h4LNjm
    Leader Material Sunline FC100 System Leader: bit.ly/2O4UElB
    Monofilament... Mono is what most anglers start with. Its incredibly forgiving, has a lot of stretch, is very strong, and its relatively cheap. Traditionally monofilament shines for topwater and crankbaits where stretch is a plus. Over the years we have shifted to braided line and currently only use monofilament as a leader material.
    Favorite Mono- Maxima Ultragreen: bit.ly/2ae97J9
    Budget Mono- Berkley Big Game: bit.ly/2vZGjSb
    Line Size Recommendations By Technique...
    Dropshot- 10 lb Braid or 6 lb Fluorocarbon
    Crankbait- 12-17 lb Fluorocarbon or 30 lb Braid
    Topwater- 40 lb Braid or 15 lb Mono
    Frog- 65 lb Braid
    Jig- 50 lb Braid, 15-20 lb Fluorocarbon, 15-20 lb Mono Leader
    Ned Rig- 8 lb Braid or 6 lb Fluorocarbon
    Senko- 30 lb Braid, 10-15 lb Mono leader, 12 lb fluorocarbon
    Shakey Head- 20 lb Braid, 10-12 lb fluorocarbon, 10 lb mono leader
    Spnnerbait/Chatterbait- 15-20 lb fluorocarbon, 40-50 lb Braid
    Big Swimbait- 80 lb braid, 25-35 lb mono or fluorocarbon leader

      Gotta have the Trilene/double clinch knot...super easy and dependable and double loop on the eye/snap/ring/arm of the lure, and provides more front tightened coils that protects the knot against abrasion, akin to the SDJK.

Double uni knot with SIX loops on each side. Throwing jigs on an SLX MH in 15' of water. Had to set hooks pretty hard to convert. As I said, had 2 breaks at leader knot. Should I: Increase the number of loops to 8 or 9, or go to a blood knot? Thanks.

    I had to stop using the double-uni knot because it kept breaking, I believe because of line burn when cinching it down (even when slobbered on)... any advice on how to avoid this? (FWIW, I went through a lot of braid-to-leader knots before I finally started using the Alberto knot w/10 turns - the leader doesn't get cinched so there's little chance of burning)
    Thanks for another great, informative video, Tim!

    • @colbyscott9822
      @colbyscott9822 4 года назад

      This happened to me, too. I started using the FG knot. It took a while to learn well but once you do, it's not as difficult as you might think. It does take a couple extra minutes but I think it's worth it. One thing to note is that on smaller diameter leaders (less than 12 lbs) it might slip on you. Easy way to prevent this is by tying an over hand knot on the tag end of the leader and cinch that overhand knot all the way to the wraps. Then add a couple more overhand knots with the tag end of the brain around both the braid and tag end of the leader.
      .
      I know it sounds complicated but like I said, once you learn it it's no big deal. As far as tying it on the boat, as long as it's not terribly windy it's pretty easy.

    • @mikemcd8408
      @mikemcd8408 4 года назад

      @@colbyscott9822 I tried the FG for a while, but I'm typically tying 40# braid to 10 or 12 lb fluoro or mono (sometimes smaller), and the FG is really intended for the leader to be heavier than the braid. Even when I used a ridiculous number of turns, it would slip on me (though I never tried a stopper knot on it). The Alberto with the 'standard' 7 turns slips, as well, but I've yet to have the knot fail with 10 turns, even going 40# braid to 6# fluoro.
      I actually think the FG is easier to tie than the Alberto, especially in the wind.

  • @scottporter4524

    At 6:20, on the palomar knot, instead of going around the line once, you can make it a double palomar knot by going around the line twice, then move the line over and around the lure.

  • @lovexhate82
    @lovexhate82 4 года назад

    Would give this 2 thumbs up if I could. Been using palomar for over a year now since I had a common cinch knot that I had used as a kid fail on me last year. Never had a problem with the palomar EXCEPT the fact that on bigger baits you use a lot of line to make it big enough to feed the bait through and I have never had it slip on straight braid but will definitely start using the double for my frog setup. Now I have some knots I can practice for those. For the leader knot I started with trying the FG knot but 8/10 times i tied it it would not hold it would slip and if you can't trust the knot you are tying whether it is because you can't tie it properly or it just isn't working for you you can't use it. You have to be able to trust it is going to hold. Since then I have started using the Aussie Quickie for my 20Ib braid to 10Ib fluoro finesse setup but it usually takes me 2-3 attempts to get it right and I gave up on using heavy braid with leader and started just running straight 17-20Ib fluoro. Now I can practice the double blood and double uni and hopefully come to trust those leader knots. Thanks for all the knowledge you and Matt share!

    • @blahblahmilbury
      @blahblahmilbury 4 года назад

      the FG knot is easy to mess up. If you make one single mistake, the knot wont hold. If you do it right, its the best and slimmest knot hands down.

    • @lovexhate82
      @lovexhate82 4 года назад

      @@blahblahmilbury I will agree with that. The few times I got it right it was great. Passed through eyes easily, no hang ups, held beautifully ... but it gets frustrating having to tie it 10 times before I get the perfect cinch.

    Had a 9 loop blood knot fail on a deps 250 lol I’m sure I did it right any suggestions on why it failed? I was running 80Lb regular PowerPro with 30# Ultragreen

    Do you guys ever use any kind of Rapala knot or uni loop knot for cranks, or certain top water baits?

    I only use the FG knot from braid to leader. its harder to tie but if you look up the tool: Daiichi Knot Assist 2.0 for FG knots, it makes it waaaay easier to tie FG knots, especially when you are on the water and fighting the wind. Check it out.

    I wonder if you guys have ever considered using the modified Albright (Alberto) knot as a connection knot. It's very strong and thin, and you don't need weird acrobatics to get it tied like, say, the FG knot. I think it's fairly easy to tie. I have tried to transition to the FG but I just can't get the knot to tie correctly with consistency, even with some of the simplified methods some RUclipsrs have shown. But I've been happy with the modified Albright.

    I know this video is a couple months old, but what’s your opinion on the GT knot? apparently the IGFA did tests on all kinds of connection knots, and the GT knot was the only one that held at 65lbs consistently. did even better than the FG knot.

    I find it so funny how many people hate on the Palomar knot. My response is you're tying it wrong. lol And the hate starts. I don't care what anyone thinks about this knot. It's tried and true and strong as hell. And the same thing goes for the Alberto knot for connections.

    What would your go to knot be to tie 12 to 20 lbs fluorocarbon to a worm hook or other lighter lure?

    Could u do a vid on how to find and catch bass suspended over deep water chasing bait bc I can find them with my birds but they move so much and I don’t have livescope so I can’t follow them around

    Tim, thanks for this comprehensive video. I do have one question. I’m looking to tie 10lb braid to 10lb mono. Can I use a double uni for this application? I can’t seem to tie the blood knot for the life of me but I’m a master uni 😬

      Yes the uni to uni will work great 👍

      I've had the same issues trying to tie the blood knot on my smaller diameter braid to leader applications. I can do it but it takes several attempts, it always slips out. I'm gonna change it up to the double uni knot from now on. 👍🏻🐟🎣

    I know theres a video somewhere that you guys made. But real quick can you answer a question.. when do you run split rings on a crank bait (all types) and when do you not? And if not then would you run a rapala knot or tie your typical knot to the bait?

  • @robertbain2435

    Thanks Tim. I use the double Uni for all of my braid to leader connections. Is it OK for 20lb braid to 15lb mono? That’s what I do for top water lures.
    For tying a Uni knot to a hook or lure, can you go through the eye of the hook twice (like you would for a Trilene knot) and then tie your Uni? Seems like that would be even stronger, but I’m concerned it may put stress on the line that I’m missing. What do you think?

      If your fishing top water you should definitely use a stronger braid. I’d say no less than 50lb braid but the knot itself is great for that. I’ve never had a problem at least, not the best but good enough in my experience

    What are your feelings on using a snap swivel to make faster bait changes? I’ve been using them but while watching your videos I’m not seeing the swivels used. Do these make baits act differently or less natural? Really interested in your thoughts. Thanks for the great videos they are more informative than many I’ve watched.

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  3 года назад

      We don't use snaps at all anymore. Over the years we've had top many failures. Different brands, styles, materials, they all fail eventually. You're much, much better off with a hyperwire split ring or in the case of striper and other large predators, an ultra split ring.
      Yes, some convenience is lost, but so much strength and reliability is gained.

      @@tacticalbassin Hey Tim. Hoping you can help me out. I switched over to a baitcaster this year, Dobyn's fury paired with Shimano SLX thanks to your recommendation videos. I've loved the transition, but have recently had some issues. I use the double blood knot you showed for my leader connection knot. I had been using powerpro 40lb with spiderwire 17lb mono leader. Had one failure which I realized was due to improper knot tying, I finished with both tag ends coming through the same direction and it ultimately untied. in the last week I have had my braid break off 3 times. The first time I got snagged in rocks in moving water while shore fishing. I was unable to get it out and had to break off the line. The braid snapped, not the mono... when I got home I cut back a bit of the braid in case there was a weak spot and retied a new leader, this time 14lb trilene mono. Nicely dressed blood knot, 9 wraps in each direction and always make sure to wet it before cinching down. The next day the second break off happened. I had pulled in a few before this happened, including 3lb smallie (not huge but was a decent little fighter) and the line had no issues. I checked my blood knot and all looked good. a short while later I got a backlash and watched my leader and rat L trap sail away. I was in my kayak this time and was able to retrieve it. the blood knot was fully intact and the braid had snapped just before the blood knot. By then I was convinced it was an issue with the braid. I went home and respooled with new powerpro super 8 slick 40 lb and tied a trilene 14lb mono leader. The next day out fishing all was going well(aside from the fish not biting likely due to the 30 degree night we had) a half hour in I cast, backlash (cast too hard on this one) and watched my leader and bait sail away. Shore fishing this time so the leader and bait were gone. I got out the backlash, real back in the line and the braid is broken off. No twirly end, just a nice clean break off in the new braid. I've gone over my guides to be sure they smooth and free of damage, all looks good, as it should on a 3 month old rod that's been well taken care of. I'm at a loss as to what is causing the issue. Both of my boys are using the same line set ups, I have tied on their leaders and they haven't had a single failure. I've lost all confidence now and don't want to keep pitching away baits, or lose nice fish. Any ideas? I want to be able to enjoy fishing again... please help!
