There's something very bizarrely comforting about hearing Pat breathing here. Often when you're listen to performances of songs, or the songs themselves, you can forget that human beings, having a human experience, wrote and recorded them, and were doing something as obvious as breathing the entire time. Arguably, the best music of all time has that effect. It's somewhere between alienating and understanding. Just hearing the struggle between human and instrument, and the tug of war that goes into making a song happen live, and the irregular, heavy breathing reminds us what we are capable of if we really apply ourselves. We're human beings just the exact same as Pat Metheny, hard as that might be to believe.
Same with Bob Dylan's music. Maybe moreso. I was going to say the Beatles performed their music better than Bob. But some songs Bob performs are awesome on. Others..I need to hear others play and I think wow, what a beautiful song. With the Beatles I assuredly know the music is great, but a cover like this really reminds me.
This is great on so many levels but one thing continues to fascinate me about this recording is the essential Englishness of it. Not just his accent, or the tone of his voice, but the sound of the guitar and the amazing string section. This wasn’t recorded in LA or New York, Paris or Berlin, but on a cold (probably rain soaked) January morning in London.
Agreed. He plays like no one else, especially his solo playing. Masterful. But, not for the feeble minded or slow of wit. He plays on a hyper-intellectual level most cannot assimilate.
I've been following Pat since Bright Size Life came out, and have seen him several times - first back in '79 with the original Pat Metheny Band. His versatility and virtuosity are breathtaking. But, Pat on acoustic gives me goosebumps.
I started playing guitar at twelve and have been playing for over fifty years. This is one of my favorite guitar solos. It has a great feel from deep inside.
The fact you heard George's guitar part featured so prominently in all the covers and helps make this song what it is, shows how he should of gotten a writing credit for this song.
He didnt receive a writing credit because he didnt write it. When the credit, "written by" appears, (in this case Lennon and McCartney,) it refers to the lyrics not the musical score. It's extremely rare for credits such as, "guitar riff by" or "piano by" on credit lines. That said McCartney is noted for verbally mentioning it to the beatles publisher Dick James. " According to James, Lennon called for a break and "within half an hour [Lennon and McCartney] wrote ... a very constructive middle to a very commercial song." McCartney, on the other hand, maintains that "the middle eight is mine ... I wrote this on my own. I would say that John probably helped with the middle eight, but he can't say 'It's mine'." McCartney has credited George Harrison with composing the signature guitar riff, saying it "made a stunning difference to the song". Source: Wikipedia
I recall when this album was released -- I was knocked out! Pat on solo guitar! As wonderful as the entire album is, this performance is still stunning!
I like how you can hear him breathing throughout the music. It makes it sound so immediate like he’s in the room and we’re just listening a few feet away.

true love is the most valuable thing one can experience in life. of all complex things that can evolve in the universe, like galaxies, stars, neutron stars, planets, life, flora, fauna, plants, a star system like our solar system, and whatnot, true love is at the very top of all things that can evolve. from this point of view, it is the purpose of the universe, if you understand what I mean. and I found it. my girl and I are a couple for 36 years now. true love increases by the way. it never hurts and is forever.
I can't believe I've never heard this rendition. Methany makes it even more beauttiful than it originally was. Hats off to you Sir Methany! THAT'S the song I want to keep in my heart forever! Thank you.
J'adore le style/talent de Pat Metheny. J'ai eu la chance de le rencontrer lors d'un festival. Je n'oublierai jamais sa discrétion et son humilité. La classe des grands Artistes. And I love him
traildoggy Look mamma how many notes i can put in a single bar. That is my feeling when he went fusion in the 80ies. BUt he is so very damn right in one thing : study your scales, again, again again. And hell when he goes slow, i just love his harmonic play.
DereMemo are you taking about the writing of the Beatles many incredible compositions, their harmonies, creative skills recording knowledge or just their guitar skills??? Give credit where it due.
People who go around accusing the Beatles of being overrated might as well just get a tattoo on their forehead that says: "HI I AM A CLUELESS ASSHOLE WITH ABSOLUTELY NO TASTE"
My question would be - if they are so over-rated, then why are they so popular among so many high caliber musicians as well as with such a diverse group of the listening public? Seems to me that is a case of not seeing the forest for the trees, lol.
Well if thinking that floats your boat keep thinking it, but Pat himself wouldn't make such an outrageous claim. Lennon and McCartney have written literally hundreds of songs that millions know by heart.
One of my fave beatle songs .... Pat ,s version is so much greater. It’s amazing how someone could redo a standard so beautiful... Can’t get this out of my head ...the nylon guitar is the best way to hear it!
Sometimes I'm glad I'm not a musician because I can hear and feel something like this based purely on an emotional response rather than one based around theory or technicality. Pat Metheny - truly a master.
After all these years….. the words still come back to me. Sitting in my friend’s bedroom playing the 45 rpm over & over to get all the words right. One of my very early & still favorites ❤️
I saw a version of the same song by Al Di Meola, it was more complex & hard to play but it was lame, cheesy, irritating compared to Metheny's beautiful rendition
Pat Metheny's music always tells a story, even when some compositions aren't his own. Thanks for your awesome music--have been listening for over 20 years.
Jeff was so FULL of life sniff sniff and miss him so much. I got to see Jeff perform Blow By Blow in Tulsa live and I just couldn’t believe what he was doing with that guitar.
Pat is obviously a phenomenal guitar player and does a masterful job with this classic. It amazes me at the depth of talent the Beatles possessed especially when you consider they broke up before any of them were 30. Think about that for a moment.
Although a gentle ballad and love song this song always had an atmosphere of something inherently haunting - that if anything is actually heightened and enhanced in this great version.
Hauntingly beautiful, yes, I always thought so. Something about the undying nature of true love in the context of human mortality. At least, that's how I see it since my sweetheart passed away.
“And I Love Her” always brings back the sweet memories of the love of my life as it was our song. Even though we are no longer together, the song still holds a special place in my heart. This guitar rendition of the song is truly a masterpiece, and I am grateful for the emotions it stirs within me. I miss and love her so much. She will always be the one.
Pat Metheny , est d'après moi , celui qui a le plus fait évoluer la guitare ! 50 albums en 50 ans de carrière ! Des formations différentes et des compositions sur toutes sortes de guitares !!!
"What It's All About", the album containing this piece impressed me more than any Metheny album has for some years. But then, I'm a sucker for raw beauty.
I saw Pat Metheny at SDSU around 1980 at the Backdoor. I showed up early, about 1-2 hours before the show, sat down in front at the quad and Pat sits down next to me for about a half hour with his acoustic and just played. I didn't interrupt him, felt he preferred his privacy and instead enjoyed watching him play up close. What a great memory.
A valuable lesson here: you can be one the best guitarists in the world - and still, it is the feeling that counts, Pat plays some pretty basic lines here, BUT every note is played like his life depends on it and the result is breathtaking. Very humbling for any guitar player.
I am so lucky to have been aware of Pat since he started and was graced to have worked stage crew for the ban in the early 80s twice. Pat even played one of my brother's BOZO apprenticed guitars in a soundcheck. Amazing talent and an even better human.
This album got me through late nights studying all through the night, while work and my 2 boys of under 3 years of age, at the time, had me in circles during the day!! Pat you are a musical genius!! Pat plays better with his eyes closed than most 'guitarists' can do with eyes open. I've seen the man and his band live in concert over a dozen times and he never disappoints. Brilliant that we have this man among us. Love you, Pat!
Hi Pat, I was at the North Sea Jazz concerts, walking distance from my home. I moved to California, then Germany, now Canada. But when I see the RUclips renderings of your concert with the Metropole Orchestra there, I get homesick! The sound of your guitar on Minuano brings me to tears. Hope to see you in Victoria BC soon.

ギターはピアノの様にでしゃばり過ぎずバイオリンの様に金切り声を出さず、人の耳に本当に心地良く響く楽器ですね! ベ-ト-ベンがギターは小さなオ-ケストラだと言ったのも頷けます。
Honey for the ears, and for the heart. Pat Metheny does his magic once again.
This is so lush. One of my favourite Beatles songs, too. I was sceptical, but ended up listening to this three times in a row!
Desde Venezuela soy y seré amante de los Beatles...esta versión por Pat es bellísima...yo
This is structurally a beautiful sing made even more beautiful in the hands of a master.
I recall when this album was released -- I was knocked out! Pat on solo guitar! As wonderful as the entire album is, this performance is still stunning!
I like how you can hear him breathing throughout the music. It makes it sound so immediate like he’s in the room and we’re just listening a few feet away.
When I hear this song played by Pat Metheny; I think of my beautiful wife Goldie. My love, my heart, my soul ..... I love her with each beat of my heart .... and I love her.
Thank you Pat Metheny for sharing your wonderful gift of music with us ....
Peace -
TC~
Jazzman I love you film
Nice it reminds me some great times too man 😢😳)
❤️
true love is the most valuable thing one can experience in life. of all complex things that can evolve in the universe, like galaxies, stars, neutron stars, planets, life, flora, fauna, plants, a star system like our solar system, and whatnot, true love is at the very top of all things that can evolve. from this point of view, it is the purpose of the universe, if you understand what I mean. and I found it. my girl and I are a couple for 36 years now. true love increases by the way. it never hurts and is forever.
The best cover for a beatles song by pat himself a work of art and a masterpiece
I could listen to him play this song over and over again for hours. Was blessed to see the " pat metheny group " years ago.
And I love him
Pat always knows where the good notes are...
traildoggy Look mamma how many notes i can put in a single bar.
That is my feeling when he went fusion in the 80ies. BUt he is so very damn right in one thing : study your scales, again, again again.
And hell when he goes slow, i just love his harmonic play.
Extremely familiar with the fretboard.
Yes, the música id yo know where are the most beautifull are
It's all in the mind's ear.
:) well put.
but then came that ending chord. argh.
Such an honor to have Pat Metheny cover one of your tunes.
DereMemo are you taking about the writing of the Beatles many incredible compositions, their harmonies, creative skills recording knowledge or just their guitar skills??? Give credit where it due.

People who go around accusing the Beatles of being overrated might as well just get a tattoo on their forehead that says:
"HI I AM A CLUELESS ASSHOLE
WITH ABSOLUTELY NO TASTE"
George played a nylon string in the original...
This is a very haunting, beautiful rendition of a classic. Love it!
Neanche i Beatles sapevano di aver composto un capolavoro di questo livello..Thank you Pat
Pat Methany is an excellent guitarist. This is a beautiful rendition of this Beatle song.
One of my favourite Beatle's songs played by one of my favourite guitarists !
pat is the best of the best
I'm certain Paul never heard his song played like this! Pat Matheny, you are definitely one of the greatest guitarist ever! Love you bro.
The best
Great song by McCartney and Lennon. In the silky smooth hands of Metheny. Beautiful.
I'm only too honored to be able to write that I absolutely loved this performance by Pat Metheny!
They say he’s pretty good with jazz guitar also?
This is beyond pleasant..
I'm in another dimension..
Pat always touches those note's.
This piece is a true example 👏👌🙌
This version opend a new dimension of a very great part of musical history.....fantastic...
The best instrumental (solo) rendering of this composition I ever heard.
I saw a version of the same song by Al Di Meola, it was more complex & hard to play but it was lame, cheesy, irritating compared to Metheny's beautiful rendition
Pat Metheny’s music is a gift! Such beautiful artistry, vulnerability and expression. Inspiring.
u r 2000% Right!
Pat Metheny's music always tells a story, even when some compositions aren't his own. Thanks for your awesome music--have been listening for over 20 years.
I am lucky! I get to see Pat play live tonight.
Beautiful and respectful version. Pat is talented enough to let this song speak for itself. Bravo!
@@roberthensley9640 Sorry for your loss. Yes that's a good way of putting it.
So much respect for the original song, and Pat’s ability to bring it out in a beautifully lyrical manner. And keeping fresh, so very fresh.
"What It's All About", the album containing this piece impressed me more than any Metheny album has for some years. But then, I'm a sucker for raw beauty.
remember Rome 1983? I was there and I am here! Your music is breath for soul... thank you!
Very excited to see him in Frankfurt this coming fall- can't wait! 😎
I love Metheny even more after reading the intro,
the great Guitar Maestro of our times
sun Tao The Roger Federer of the guitar! In a class of his own.
Your version of this reminds me why I never, ever get tired of hearing this song. Beautifully played. Thank you.
Old Beatles fan here, but gifts like you have keep me feeling much younger. Thank you Pat.

God. What a masterpiece. By a MASTER. Tears.
A valuable lesson here: you can be one the best guitarists in the world - and still, it is the feeling that counts, Pat plays some pretty basic lines here, BUT every note is played like his life depends on it and the result is breathtaking. Very humbling for any guitar player.
That's something I learned from Joe Pass - - - there is no shame in playing something simply if you feel it fits the music.
Pat’s signature (as always) is eclectic and ever engaging on this classic McCartney piece.
I can't think of the words to describe how beautiful this is. It took me in and the anxiety of my world vanished. So calming . . . Peaceful . . .
Just can’t stop listening to this, really....
Always respects the melody. Supreme guitarist.
Absolutely honoured to be alive to share all your beautiful music with you. Thank you for the inspiration...💕🥰🙏
As an unconditional lover of the 'Beatles', having sung and played many of their inspiring ❤️ music, I'm thankful for this one : It's an unexpected interpretation of unique beauty... and understanding of the original ❤️🔥
This one is going to save my day...
After reading the comments of Alan Reeder, it touched me that he noticed how a teacher was amazed by Pats talent and would come forward and reflect.....after all , our teachers of our culture are given a gift to guide and witness our young , is important that period in our lives is to us now and in future. May we protect our young from evil and allow our youth to change the world, like Pat has Thank you Alan N Reeder for your dedication and insight Alberta Dave
Pat may be the best guitarist ever. And I love him!
According to Spotify, in 2018 I listened to a total of 98 24-hour days of Pat Metheny. I'm still listening. And it's a HOOT to hear my Google Nest in a British woman's voice say Pat's name!
That was one of the most beautiful renditions of a Beatle song as your ever going to hear. I had the great pleasure of
seeing Metheny in 1992 and McCartney in 1976, many years ago. Man!, this song is great.
I too, have enjoyed the M&M's in concert.

I'm going to go see him in Vienna I'm too excited
One of the FINEST recording artists of the generation...indeed My favorite nobody can touch Pat in longevity...quality...and sheer volume of work...nobody
Beautiful. Doesn’t get any better than a song by the Beatles.
So beautiful and intimate, Pat.
Am I glad I stumbled on this. Beautiful arrangement. I found this very moving.
He knows how to play with feeling, that’s what matters the most.
Pat plays better with his eyes closed than most 'guitarists' can do with eyes open. I've seen the man and his band live in concert over a dozen times and he never disappoints.
Brilliant that we have this man among us.
Love you, Pat!
QUESTO BRANO MUSICALE È UN OPERA D'ARTE. UNA EMOZIONE SENZA TEMPO. 😢
