Of all the singers in the world Bobby Darin is the only one who has ever mastered the art of digging out the soul and heart of a song and really delivering the most soulful and heart felt song to his fans. No one will ever come close because they are not driven with the desire and compassion for singing as Bobby Darin. Yes he was so driven because his life was to be so short. This still is my all time favourite of his songs. Just watch the emotion in his delivery and you understand my meaning

The last time I saw Bobby Darin my husband and I were coming home from work. We had to pass the Bronx Court House on the Grand Concourse in the Bronx. There was some kind of something going on, but not too many people were there. Bobby Darin was singing, giving it his all and we stopped for a couple of minutes to listen, could not have been more than about 10 people there also. We moved on because we had to go home to walk our dog. However, we always remember that day. We feel guilty that we did not stay longer, that there were so few people there, actually guilt. He Didn't care that so few were willing to stay and listen, he just sang his heart out. Loved Bobby Darin, a great singer and a great human being. May he always RIP.

He could do it all, writing, singing, played 5 instruments, did his own arrangements, very good actor, electrifying stage presence and he never had music lessons and couldn’t read or write music notes. Loved his wonderful impersonations. He was a member of Mensa because of his high I.Q. Of 137. All this and he was so good looking and sexy! We were truly blessed to have him for such a short time but the blessings continue as we can still see him in videos and listen to his music. CLASSY was a word invented but Bobby Darin. For those of us who love him, he will forever be here as we continue to listen to his music.

    It's not a performance it's an offering.
Maybe someday, some people, after hearing an offering,
finally won't feel this 'need' to compare it to other offerings as merely an opportunity to argue over whose 'better'.
Won't hold my breath, but one can hope. I hear this offering & it absolutely sends me, solidifying the deep fact

bobby suffered from the same complaint as myself cardiomyopathy.heart failure or enlarged heart to the ignorant.up until the end of the 80s it was basically incurable and is still now except for highly risky transplants.problem is it often is diagnosed so late that your faulty heart has worked at such a slow rate that rejection and failure of all your other organs make many sufferers ineligible.your kidneys for example take a hiding due to the amount of pills you take daily just to keep your heart going.since the 80s the use of beta blockers and a strictly monitored regime of other drugs wafarine diuretics and the like has extended the life span of victims greatly.just under twenty years ago with my heart working at 25 percent i was given a choice 6 weeks to live or take part in a 5 year experimental scheme under barts hospital in london.i was the first catheter ablation ever done on a sick heart.it eliminated the arrythmia and got my heart beating regularly and working more efficiently.its total rubbish as stated here that bobby couldnt sing or perform with the condition.i had been seeing a doctor for a year with what i thought was a heavy cold and he diagnosed as asthma! finally as happens to many patients i collapsed and was technically dead and was resusictated in the ambulance.my lack of breath constant coughing up cataarh and exhaustion were due to my heart not functioning and my lungs filling up with fluid i was literally drowning.i worked at a hard physical job until i collapsed.it turns out as in many cases i had had it for years undiagnosed as is almost always the case and mine was heriditary my mother had an enlarged heart as does my brother.since my surgery i have had to retire take 17 pills a day to stay alive and suffer from chronic fatigue but adjusting to my limitations lead a fairly normal life .trouble was in bobbys day it was a death sentence but as he did you can lead an almost normal life despite fatigue and shortness of breath by taking drugs to ease your condition.problem was then there was no way to prevent the heart declining further and basically wearing out so like bobby you had a limited life expectancy with the end coming extremely quickly in the final stages.thank god now due to medical science the prognosis is not as bleak my brother walks 20 miles a day and while my heart is worse i still manage to do most things i used to do.to say bobby never had it because he couldnt perform if he did is an outright lie from someone who knows nothing about heart failure.

🤔I have always thought that Perry Como sang the song best. He does do a great job of it. BUT, NOW I LOVE Bobby's version because it's SOULFULL and more from the heart. It's like he's telling us a story of the love of his life and he feels every emotion of the words he sings. To me the song is about The Love of my life that I let slip away from me. "Once upon a Time, Never comes again". "MAGNIFICENT 🥰

As a child he was in poor health, according to wikipedia, perhaps due to a poor diet and little medical attention. By the age of 8 he was afflicted with multiple attacks of rheumatic fever. The disease left him with serious heart problems. He once overheard his doctor tell his mother that he would be lucky to make it to 16.

You can see him struggling to recover here in this live performance...despite having to gasp for air, he gave killer performances. He could interpret good songs like this as well as Frank...and like Frank, he cared about the songs.
I agree with many of the glowing comments here. Bobby was a MASSIVE and underappreciated talent. Like some other multi-talented people, he was not just a rock 'n roll singer. He could sing country and the American Songbook popular songs just as well.
He wrote music and could play a number of instruments.
He was nominated for an acting Oscar. Some people were born to be on stage/perform...Bobby was one of them. Others with multiple talents who come to mind are Mickey Rooney, Judy Garland, and Frank.
It was so sad that Bobby died so young...and he knew that he would because of his frail heart...they had told him that he might not live past 21. Some of our brightest lights flickered off too soon-- see also Nat King Cole, Patsy Cline, and Buddy Holly.

I thank you so much for posting this, saw an interview by Dodd Darin their son, Bobby knew he had no education because of his illness that damaged his heart at an early age, but his grand mother (who he thought was his mother) taught him music and stage presence, something he used all his life, he knew he wasn't the most handsome of guys, wore a topee from an early age, but had a swagger and cool factor that no one has ever matched, in my opinion nobody has ever come close to matching this dear humorous man as an entertainer, he was great, and I doubt no one will argue that fact, just unforgettable, and I only know him by his TV performances, my parents albums, and the movie Kevin Spacey made as a tribute to him, his performance was given rewards, the movie kinda flopped. That same year it was released, Sandra Dee passed, she never had another love, I hope they are reunited at some point, that is up to God, but he will forever live on thru his music, he was awesome in so many ways, TY!

Bobby Darin singing "Once Upon a Time" is one of the best ... words fail me to describe ...each time I hear him singing it, it is brand new again. You know how songs will sometimes "get stuck" in your mind and it replays over and over? This is the only song that I don't get irritated when it gets "stuck". It's more like a special time for reflection of times and people who've passed through and are gone. Bobby's interpretation of this song is absolutely the best.... He's the only singer who gets all the emotions just right... the sadness, the respect, the youthful idealism, the joy, the regrets of what might have been, the final acceptance.... He just poured himself into it. Okay....for someone who said words failed me, I sure went on and on... Thanks for posting this.

He gave you your money’s worth and more! He was a decent actor also 🎥 Frank Sinatra didn’t like him, I think he was jealous of all his talent. I never liked Sinatra, I liked his songs but quite a few of them were written by Paul Anka. Rest In Peace Bobby, you are not forgotten 🎵 🎼 🎶 💖🌹🌹

Best performer ever. RIP, Bobby, thank you for giving so much. A star that burns twice as bright will last half as long. You took him too soon, Mr. Magic Man.

I often think that Bobby Darin may have been the greatest American entertainer of the 20th Century. If you think about it, there was hardly anything that he couldn't do. Everything he did do, he excelled at. It's so sad that we had such a short time to experience this incredible individual.

Edgar, Edith, garyb and all have said it better than I can. The world, we...lost a beautiful singer, muso, actor, mimic..And yes, bobby brings me to tears singing this song. A song of loss....

Simply the best at what he did, which was entertain with every fiber of his being. Bobby Darin didn't simply sing a song, he embraced it. In turn, his audience shared in the energy and warmth that resulted from his unique brand of song styling. He was one-of-a-kind... none better before or since.
