I am lucky to say that Bobby Darin was a friend of mine. We spent a lot of time together between 1967 and 1972. For those who love his singing, I want you to know that he was as wonderful a human being as he was a musical artist. He was so kind, compassionate and understanding. He was twelve years older than I was but because he liked me as a person and also enjoyed my songs when I was a young songwriter, he always had time to talk with me. He was a mentor and always gave me great guidance. Such a miraculous person is hard not to miss, even after all the years since he departed. If you had known him, you would have loved him as a person.

Steven Le Viere When under stress and stuff(you ain't heard nothin yet! Put bro in body bag and sang Jolson for weeks to release. So, Al Jolson was my go to guy along with the Beatles.... Then I saw Tony B live in the U.K., sing his Bobby Darin medley at a Jolson festival and he introduced to me Bobby Darin who was far far more than a Dream Lover. I was hooked and have been ever since, not just the singer but the man himself. So when I am under stress like this week caring for Mom 24/7 I go to my musical strengths and happy places. And where are they you may ask? In time order....Al Jolson, Bobby Darin, The Beatles... Thanks Tony B...Babino for your awesome Bobby Darin set in 2005, I owe you one. And thanks Steven for this question, you really got to me...ha ha ha....take care folks and never stop singing!...

sadly its the industry that is too lazy to find this level talent. they have their engineers fix everything in the studio. have choreographers design on stage nonsense. in the end there is very little that is true to the singer. its all lazieness that revolves around greed. and its nearly impossible to do it any other way. money just ruins everything it touches

Also, you may not have known this, but he was suffering from a serious heart ailment during this time (his struggles with it were lifelong) though you would never know it to hear the strength and clarity of his voice on this rendition. He passed away not too long after this, if memory serves.

I was raised in a remote area. A boy from a different school hitch hiked all the way to my boarding school one weekend to bring me this record. It was a little overwhelming at that age. His mum told me many years later when I finished my first degree at university that he will stay in love with me forever. My heart broke for him. To me he was just a great friend. Unrequited love. It can happen to any one of us. He passed away in his fifties. Every time I hear this song, it takes me way back.

To me, a 10 year old boy, he showed me the art of performing and once told me that life was no different. That was sad from an entertainer who made so many happy-including me. Can only agree. As you see, I come and watch this so very often. I long to go back.
How could anyone imagine back then what would become of the music, while listening to this. I was a child and a teenager in the Seventies, and I was lost after 1980. I still think it was my personal bad luck to have spent my youth after that year :/
And on the other hand: Today Mr. Darin would have survived the surgery. I wished we could change this events: progress of medicine much sooner, 'progress' in music much later- not in my lifetime :)
I wished he would have been more happy. I wished he would have had a grave. I often think he did not love himself and wanted to disappear completely, after he had to leave the world.
I wished he would know what he still means to us all.
Have a peaceful new year, dear friend somewhere in the world :) Greetings from Berlin, Germany.

winterweib I was driving home that December night in 1973 when the DJ on the radio announced that "a rock & roll legend is dead at 37".Still gives the chills. Yes I believe he would have survived the surgery if it happened today. Heart transplants were only 6 years old in 1973 so it would have been a risky option. His ticker was too far gone for the medical technology at the time. I figure he probably didn't love himself that much either. He predicted he wouldn't make it to 40 and simply resigned himself to that fact.

There still is great music out there to be found

This performance is one of my top 10 all time favorites already and I just watched it tonight for the first time. Lot's of singers have good voices but few can "touch the soul" the way Bobby Darin did in this song. It's the sincerity in the tone of his voice and the lyrics themselves. He touches on something "fundamental" to us all. The desire to be loved and accepted "unconditionally" for "who" we are, not what we've achieved or what we look like. Beautiful!!

Lisa Harris reading a biography he likely knew this was one of his last performances and cried after when he found out his son wasn’t able to attend and see it

Cry loudly against an untoward destiny... but still death comes by it's own unwelcome clock ...... I met him once and loved him

He was living on borrowed time. My uncle with the same childhood illness (rheumatic fever) felt that way. That's what drove Darin so hard to be a success as a young man.....oh MAN OH MAN, was he ever. Today is his birthday and I just did the math - he'd only be 84 today.

I just love this rendition of the song. I listen to it everyday and I hope a man feels like this towards me. I know I would feel this way in return
