- Jacob Collier performing his "one-man show" version of this classic song originally performed by the Carpenters (written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David). This was part of an intimate, experimental performance at the EMW Bookstore in Cambridge, Massachusetts on April 26, 2016. It was amazing to be in the audience!
Live electronics, including the vocal harmonizer, were developed by Ben Bloomberg at MIT.
I notice folks in the background smiling and shaking their heads. Pretty much my reaction every time I watch one of this kid's videos. Joy and bewilderment.
loving that lady's face all the way through this, same as mine

3:06 may be the most magical musical moment created to date.
That suspense
I broke into tears at 3.11..... Not joking....... Man...... This guy.......
+Michiel van Zundert Same here. I was crying but I was so happy. Just so beautiful.
+Reverse Clockwise Me too....😊
Michiel van Zundert sometimes, silence is the most beautiful thing
Michiel van Zundert

Meemaw in the back is JAMMIN!!!! haha love it!
*I don't wanna live on this planet anymore*
+Seii LOL I was stunned watching his videos just now ! :-)
You mean you wanna go to his 😅
There is no way you can make that type of arrangements musically and not be from Heaven. You don't fool me you're an Angel!!!
In the day that he was born the angels got together and decided to create a dream come true
I’ve spent the last hour looking for this video. This is what got my attention and it was how nasty Jacob gets playing the bass. Still mind blowing all these years later
Glad you found it :)
I feel like 1:19 doesn't get the recognition it deserves
it's the best bit!!
That is …why(high pitch) part is just unbelievable. Pure art. Tearful stuff.
3:09 it's fuckin' chill!
What a cool opportunity, Evan! So glad you got to meet him. :)
one of the brightest lights in music right now💯 #genius!
This was so filthy I was biting my lip the whole time, took my breath away
I am moved to tears every time I hear this guy.
Genius! Genius! ... he will give us surprise for a long long time!
This guys talent is beyond rediculous.
Absolutely Stunning
Let it rain down, brother
This is truly incredible.
That synth solo!!
thanks for posting. I watched the original video so many times, it had started to lose some of the feeling of true improvisation and this completely restores that. The keyboard solo is smoking hot.
He has VERY good choice in headphones too! Too much talent for one guy!
What headphones are these?
GENIUS !
And he does it again! Please keep going Jacob! Simply stunning!
His vocals have come a long way since then
Wwwwwwwooooooooowwwwwww, SOOOOUUUULLLLL!!!!!!!, PUREEEEE!!!!!

Masteeeeerrrrr...!
Did Frank ocean sample this from him? It sounds similar to it
Rafael Hernandez frank ocean sampled the song but in his song he sampled stevie wonder's version of the song
Feel like he should have said “are you ready?” at 3:36 lol
Even Grammy winners have humble beginnings
DAMN SON!
1:17 is he playing bass and piano at the same time??
Yea. Hammer on the bass
jey one thing, why the bass have that tone?, i never heard a bass like that... (im new in music haha sorry) can somone explain me pls?...
sounds like he has flat-wound strings (they make a warmer, fatter sound) and I guess he plays with his fingers like he does with his double bass, so it sounds a little different to a normal electric bass player..
+Leo Wyatt Thank you for taking your time to explain me. Greetings. :)
no problem! have a good day :)
Booooo to the one sucker who didin't like this gem of a cover.
Don't know what it is about 1:58-2:04
What is this program that use jacob with his novation keyboard for harmonizer your voice?
It's one of a kind.
Custom-made
Any one know the type of genre for this
Jazz fusion, more or less
A nice combination of neo-soul, jazz fusion and maybe even a splattering of prog. It's quite cool how as a jazz trained musician he clearly picks different genres for different songs and fuses them into his style of training. Close To You he borrows from neo-soul, Questlove, pushing the beat, and then in PYT he goes full funk and prog! Brilliantly forward-thinking musician.
jacob collier is his own genre
but this song in particular is like hip hop influenced electro jazz. honestly though pretty much a waste of time to classify his music ahahah check out a guy named d'angelo if you really like this.
Well that makes sense, thanks
He’s way better sounding live
Gentlman be ready this man are going to make a fcking bsness in the world musics , he need help ye , i do that !
BAN. AN. AS!!!
the new standard...(just kidding)
The least sensitive version I have ever heard
sorry,but i don't like this version
Funny, I think its by far the best he has done. Too bad the bass on this recording is a bit muddy.
all pre-registered and engineered with bass triggering way out of sync for 99% of the time... less than impressed...
it's called swing...but check out Taylor Swift; she got some nice quantised bass.
Nothing is out of sync? He's playing bass live, singing live and playing keys live along to pre-recorded material. The swung rhythms are asymmetrical subdivisions which you might not be used to, but he is an absolutely top tier musician.
Get out
Chill out!
In the neo-soul world it's called 'slugging it' a modified swing sync. Gives it that lazy DeAngelo feel
