- I have used Ozone for years for water clarity and recently decided to try UV to see how it compares. Today we talk about the benefits of UV and install a 57W one on the Waterbox 7225.
I went with the 57W classic UV as it seemed to have the best output in terms of watts for its physical size bulkreefsupply...

It is amazing how fast a proper Uv clears up your tank water! In only 12 hours my water was crystal clear and Dino's look like they are gone for good! So far the best piece of kit I have bought!
You rock. I like how your videos focus on the nuts and bolts.
Great video, keep us updated on what changes you see.
Will do!
Youre timing is impeccable as always.... one of the next items on my list..... vasectomy 🙈🙈🙈😂😂😂🏴💚❤🏴
Have plenty of bags of frozen peas. LOL
Hah what’s your next project so I can start it first. Lol. Yep frozen peas !
@@Reefkpr1 🙈🙈🙈
@@ReefDudes colonic irrigation..let me know how you get on... .. 😁😁😁 ps don't let this be the first thing I try first.... pleeeeez 😂😂😂🏴❤🐠💚🏴
man I was wiping my front glass 2-3x/day to no effect, within 24 hrs of seetting up steralizer my tank is way clearer, Im excited .
Big win!
Great video once again, keep up the good work
Thanks Vincent!
Thanks for sharing fantastic video again sir.....👍👍👍👍👍👍
Great video Deven! I have a 25 watt UV on my RSR 650 and the water is invisible and my fish are never sick. I only run it at night. I’m sure you will be happy with the results.
Sounds like it’s working well for you!
Great video
Thanks Mike!
I bought a jebao UV months ago and the reason i havent installed it is because i hate plumbing things lol bought a hose that doesnt even fit the return pump that i bought for it 😅
Flex hose and adapters :)
I would love to see how the flow looks in the sump, and also what gph you're using.
I can’t see a follow up video but could be missing it, how did it work out for you? Less glass cleaning if nothing else? That’s my goal! 😁
Did the UV do a good job at killing the Dino’s? Been fighting it for over a year and my last attempt is the uv sterilizer that’s on the way.
did you read the directions on how to install this? how are you going to get all the air out of it? you're losing 1/2 of it's contact area and effectiveness
.
I know it’s not ideal.. but sometimes you have to work with the space you have to work with.
I can understand wanting it to look clean but even if you dropped it a couple inches to angle it just a touch you could get so much more performance out of it.
Ultimately you do you and thanks for making the video. @@ReefDudes
Would you go with that UV again? Setting up at water box 320.7 never ran UV but going to have a much higher fish load.
Are you using Pentair's gph recommendation or Aqua recommendation?
If your pump fails, is it safe for the UV sterilizer to run dry?
I Have code to turn it off if the pump isn’t running. Don’t think short term running dry would be an issue. Water would mainly work to cool the sleeve so may be some long term issue but for a short bit I wouldn’t worry
Finally installed my 40W Pentair UV on my tank yesterday after putting it off for a month. The bulb will go in tonight as long as it passes my 24 hour leak test.
Bulb is installed. 24 hrs of runtime and my water is crystal clear!
Hi Deven , what flow is recommended, am putting one on my 700 gls new build also installing a FM to see the flow in gls . By the way I couldn’t understand where it goes from the UV to what reactor, can you tell me . Hey as usual your videos are very explicit and full of knowledge
The flow depends on the specific UV reactor you buy as everyone has different ratings. Mine goes into a cryptic reactor (nothing to do with UV but a place for bacteria).
@@ReefDudes what’s is this cryptic reactor? Sorry to bather you but I am very interested in keep learning
Can I just put a uv light in my sump tank? I got a waterproof UV light but haven't seen any videos like that just a uvpump
I have a question about UV Sterilizers. If I have a 57 watt sterilizer plugged into my apex shouldn't the wattage used show up as 57 watts. I have a Pentair UV rated at 40 watts and on my apex it draws 45 watts. My Aqua UV 57 watt unit draws 33 watts. How is that possible?
Good question. I have not tested mine. But the bulb wattage abs the transformer wattage may be different(now I’m curious to test mine one day!)
@@ReefDudes BRS mistakenly sent me six 57 watt bulbs and I tested each on the apex and with a Kila-watt meter and four bulbs were 32 to 38 watts one was 42 and one was 48 watts. Plugged into my Pentair UV I got the same readings. My Pentair 40 watt bulb runs consistently at 45 watts.
I called Aqua and was told that my first bulb was old and that was the reason for the low output. The six bulbs from BRS were brand new. Nobody has yet to explain this to me. If nothing else, all six brand new bulbs should have read the same. Somebody please tell me how a 57 watt bulb can put out 57 watts while only drawing 30 something watts.
I am setting up a 240 gallon tank with a 46" sump from Geo. If I went with Pentair I would be spending a few hundred more dollars. What made you go with the AU which is rated for my tank?
Whats need of UV when O3 doing same ?
Some overlap. Both help with water clarity. O3 will be better at breaking down organics. UV better at sterilizing alage and parasites if contact time is proper
Where can I get the clamps from
First!
And also, what kind of UV would you recommend for a 40b with 20 sump? I need to get rid of dinos
Have to check out the rating of which ever brand you pick. Each one is. Bit different
@@ReefDudes would you recommend the aqua UV? I think the 15w would work for my tank but I've heard mixed reviews and have seen one become brittle and soft after a year of use
Hey I have the same tank and same UV I plumbing same like you from the return line.. I use 1/2 pvc pipe and install a neptune flow sensor. I only can get 280 GPH with my pump at 100% everyone said is too low flow, what do you think, and how much flow are you planning to get in your UV thanks
I haven’t even flow tested it yet. I’ll get and work it out when I get back to town :)
Thank you I will wait for your next video
Did you use the pvc clamps from brs?
I got the clamps from reefsupplies in Canada
@@ReefDudes what sized clamps did you buy?
👍neat job yet again again Deven 👏😀you just need to turn your valve towards you for Easy of adjustment 😂 And Drofweshmagic get couple pairs of y fronts need to keep them tight 😖😂🏴👍
Haha I was trying to tuck it up abs hide it. It’s a union on both sides so easy to rotate if I get the urge later hehe :)
Question about the"slight angle" what direction should it be angled? Why?
Ideally it would be vertical if you have the Space. The main thing is you don’t want a big air bubble inside of it
@@ReefDudes Thanks. I didn't have room to mount vertical. I did try to give it a slight angle. Great video.
@@stevencoleman775 Thanks Steven!
I’ve found that no matter what way you hang it the air bubbles come out eventually. Even with fairly low flow.
Sounds promising!
what kind of mount did you use to mount it and hold it into place?
aquaUV have brackets you can get made for it
What happened to your powder blue tang?
Sadly while moving he was in a temp tank... added a dwarf angle to that tank which apparently had something and wiped them both out :(. I learned my lesson to always QT after that
You installed this bad boy in the least efficient way possible. You'll have a huge air pocket at the top of the chamber that wont have water flowing through it
Hey Devan so how did this UV filter work out for you? I know this is an older video but still using it?
Yep still using it. actually replaces the bulb for he first time a month or so ago
@@ReefDudes Nice have the pentair 40W on my RS 650 Peninsula but I am gonna get this for the RS Xl 300 seahorse build in progress.
@@devachapman6315 I picked it mainly for its output to size. best bang for a "shorter" unit.
@@ReefDudes 100% agree my 40w unit it huge and has to sit outside of the stand. The lady of the house not a fan. This 25w looks like a nice fit for the new tank and I prob. Will instal it the same way you did.
@@devachapman6315 solid plan! the 57w was same size physicailly as the 25w if i recall
UV kills.....
Technically it just sterilizes and prevents reproduction :)
