Awh mate, Ethan, I hope they get back to you very soon. It's so annoying that they're making you wait even more :( I'm sending you good vibes. They better refer you!

Thanks Andrew. It's definitely really annoying. I've spoken with a couple of other guys who are similar in situation and are being told the same thing. Despite the fact we *can* be referred if continual weight loss has been demonstrated. It's too important to let it slide so I'll just keep on at them, unless the lottery fairy hits me up with a win to go private 🤣!

    Hi Ethan,
I had some questions I hope you don’t mind me asking.
So I’m 22 and tomorrow I’ll ask my GP to refer me to the GIC
But I would like to start hormones asap.
I’m currently working more hours so I can save up around £800-£1000 and go for private sessions and then see if my GP will agree to give me prescriptions for free as I’m eligible for the nhs free prescriptions.
    Is that what you’ve done?
And will I then have to re-refer to the GIC again for top surgery or can I just go to the appointment that was supposed to be for starting hormones. I mean do they have separate appointments for operations?
I’m sorry if I asked too much. I just don’t have any trans friends or somewhere to ask.

Hey, sorry I never replied to you before. I’ve only just seen your comment.
The exact specifics may vary from GIC to GIC but it should be similar enough.
I self referred to Sandyford GIC in Glasgow.
Whilst waiting to be offered an appointment I privately saw Dr Myskow in Edinburgh.
Shortly after I had my first NHS appointment. It was an initial psych discussion.
Whilst waiting for my second appointment with the NHS I started hormones privately.
I then eventually had my second, and more recently third NHS appointments.
The NHS procedure is set, so you will not be able to skip initial appointments and go straight for a surgical referral. Some GICs won’t discuss surgery until you have been with them for hormones for a certain period regardless if you started privately.
Many GPs also will not prescribe hormones without the oversight and management of the GIC.
Your first appointment at the GIC with the NHS won’t be able to do surgical referral there is no fast track aside from also doing that privately.
You won’t have to re-refer to the NHS, you can do private care whilst waiting to be seen. Ultimately you will then have to choose as there is a conflict of care interest having two clinicians managing the same treatment. So you can’t keep going private and have the NHS manage hormones too.

Ethan Wilson Thank you so much for replying, so do you pay for your T?

I have literally just got my first NHS prescription, however for the past 8 months worth I paid privately, yes.
I paid for consult, and prescriptions through the private doctor and pharmacy. Purchased supplies separately.
