First introduced in 2015 by Noodler’s for the events in Paris with murder of Charlie Hebdo over a religious cartoon. This pen symbolizes freedom of speech and that "The pen is mightier than the sword."
This phrase was first coined by the novelist and playwright Edward Bulwer-Lytton in 1839, in his historical play Cardinal Richelieu. Ironically enough, Richelieu was the chief minister to the French King Louis XIII.
Silencing voices is still an issue today (Salman Rushdie stabbed August 12, 2022) - please watch until the end for my own personal experience as a former Muslim.

About 7 years ago I bought the bottle of Noodlers " Heart Of Darkness" ink with the free Charlie pen, and have never regretted this purchase. The ink seems somewhat permanent and I absolutely love the flow and the slight shading that I get. The black is pleasant, and in my pens and papers tends to look a little softer, which I love. No need to search "Grey" or "Gray" inks as most of them look like the tracings of a #2 lead pencil. This ink is perfect!
Now onto the free Noodlers "Charlie" pen. What better endorsement can I give, except to say that I have carried this little gem every day for 7 years. It writes well, with a smooth flow and maybe a bit of feedback. I note the criticisms as being " stinky", " too small" and whatever, but this wonderful little celluloid pen is FREE!!! Top that if you will.
I love this comment so much!!! Great description of the HOD color - like a darker #2 pencil. It's truly a beautiful ink and I especially like the reason behind it.
7 years for Charlie! WOW!!! Mine is inked right now and I was just thinking that I have hardly had any hard starts. The time that I do have hard starts is when it's been sitting there for a week or two, which is rare.

@@KitchenCounterCrafts , Please keep enjoying this little pen, my friend. Mine is pocketed daily. I admit that I often slip in another interesting fountain pen as well, but my little celluloid “Charlie” is with me always. Celluloid has a warm feel that is not otherwise duplicated. This pen is thin and light , but doesn’t drag on your pocket either. I use a little silicon grease on the threads and it holds a barrel of ink. It’s the best “ Freebie” I’ve ever had and to think it came in a bottle of the best ink! Lucky old us.
@@Espiel78 Hahaha! That last line! I am so happy to meet another "Charlie" lover. There's a lot of negative opinions out there on this pen but come on... it's FREE! You can't beat that! I even recommended to another that they just use it as a dip pen if they don't want to use it as a regular fountain pen. But mine has never had any issues and it was my first eyedropper (yes, used with silicone). It's perfect for sketching with HOD. It really is a lovely pairing! @@Espiel78 you are too kind. I love to scribble - this pen makes me want to sketch. Have you heard of “urban sketching?” I watched a few videos on it and it’s really pretty easy to just sit, draw (scribble), and see what comes out. There are so many talented artists on RUclips.
Many use fountain pens to sketch- they just take their notebooks everywhere and draw what they see!

This was very helpful! When I started buying fountain pens and inks five years ago, I bought LAMY and Noodlers brands because they were less expensive. Heart of Darkness and the free pen were among my first purchases. Thank you for providing the background story. I was unaware of the details. P.S. I’ve never inked the pen! It’s still in the box/wrapper. I was intimidated, being used to using cartridges and converters. I may have to pen play today. 🖋
Oh man!!! Fill up that puppy! If you have the TWSBI, then you have silicone to put on the threads. My Charlie is always full of Heart of Darkness. It’s always on my desk, ready to draw and sketch. It is a great little fountain pen
@@KitchenCounterCrafts oh yes! I have several TWSBI pens with silicone grease that I just used on my eye dropper pen yesterday. I’ll unpack and fill it tomorrow for the new year!
I was looking on RUclips for videos of creators who reviewed the Charlie pen. I was not disappointed. I’ve got about 8-9 Charlie pens. I’ve also given quite a few away. Some of the Charlie’s I got needed a bit of tuning. Some for the nib, some for the feed. But all of them wrote exceptionally well after a little cleaning and a little tuning. I usually start off with scrubbing them with a good quality dish detergent that degreases, like Dawn. Then I floss the nib to get rid of any debris. I’ll reinstall the nib and feed in the section and then put just a dab of silicone grease on the section/barrel threads. After I ink the pen up, I adjust the nib and feed for ink flow. All of this takes maybe ten minutes tops. I only had a few pens that I needed to heat set the feed on. Push the nib and feed in for drier flow. Pull them out for wetter flow. Very small adjustments make a big difference. I’ve found that if the feed sticks out past the section into the barrel by about 1/8-3/16 of an inch. You’ll be pretty close to perfect for the correct ink flow. It’s a wet flow without being overly wet. I use my Charlie pens for artwork along with a Noodler’s Triple Tail and a Noodler’s Ahab. I use a fair number of Noodler’s inks as well. I really like Noodler’s products in general. All of Noodler’s products are well thought out and I appreciate the business philosophy.

I really appreciate your tips on how you clean it. Plus flossing the nib. I haven’t done that since I got it a couple of years ago! It reminded me that it desperately deserves a good cleaning!
Do you use any other Noodler’s pens?
@@KitchenCounterCrafts I’ve got 11 Ahab pens, 8 Konrad pens, 7 Standard (Nib Creeper) pens, 1 Triple Tail and 8 Charlie pens. So yeah, I’m a big fan of Noodler’s inks and pens. 😂
I’ve got some other pens for writing, like TWSBI, Kaweco, JinHao, Fountain Pen Revolution (which I’m really fond of) and some others. But for my artwork, I only use Noodler’s pens and ink.
I have a bottle of Lexington Grey coming to the house soon. So I’ll have another Charlie pen to add to the growing Charlie collection. 2 of my Charlie pens are strictly for Noodler’s Bay state blue and Bay state Concord grape. The clear barrels on the Charlie pens are permanently stained at this point. I tried bleaching them, but didn’t have much luck. I think the staining is beyond fixing. But that’s not a big deal for me. The pen still works great. It’s just a bit harder to see where the ink level is. They are still going strong after a couple of years use. Just a basic rinsing out occasionally and a touch of grease and they are put back into use. I do enjoy the Charlie pens. I enjoy all my Noodler’s pens. But for some reason the Charlie’s appeal to me so much. I think it’s because of their simplicity. I find elegance in simplicity.
If you really want to kick your Noodler’s Ahab game up a notch. Look at getting some of those .308 reusable cartridges from Noodler’s. They put more ink in the Ahab than the piston converter. But it isn’t susceptible to burping ink when the ink level gets low as when the Ahab is converted to an eye dropper pen. The cartridges are great because you can load them with ink and cap them for use later. They will fit in most small tins and you can have multiple colors to choose from. When you change inks. Just screw the new cartridge on the Ahab like you did with the Charlie to purge the feed of the old color. It was a brilliant idea by Nathan to create a refillable cartridge.

Yes! Just last week i ordered a 4.5oz bottle of Noodler's Nikita and got a free Charlie with it. I am in love with this pen. perfect for my pocket. My cap is swirled shades of coffee browns and light purples.
Just a note... I use my fountain pens for drawing and the Charlie has a real nice feel for it. Not a bad pen for sketching!
Wonderful! What are you going to do most - draw or write??? Are you scared to put it in your pocket though? I am still not comfy taking it out - no converter and eyedropper fill is a bit scary to me! I think I might be a big chicken! 🐔
@@KitchenCounterCrafts I draw! I always have pockets full of pens, D20 dice, chapsticks, pocketknives and doodads. At least a couple pens per day on me. I've recently been carrying a Delike brass fountain pen and a piston fill WingSung with an extra fine nib. Or a .25 Rotring Isograph. I might have a pen problem. And For safety, I do own a 4 pen capacity pocket protector, but I hardly use it. I just toss the pens in and go. I've had a couple leaks over the years but I'm still alive. ;)

I love that you shared the contents of your pockets! 😍 mine usually have bits of sparkling trash I pick up off the ground like, shiny metal or other objects I can put into my junk journals. Also, I have safety pins (you never know), chapstick/lip balm, and a pen or two. I have never heard of the Delike, brass FP!!! I just might "need" one. I usually carry around my Sailor 1911 Compass or a couple of cheapie Jin Hao - but in my purse, upright, with the cap on tight! You are inspiring me now to put one in my pocket.

Good video for both Noodler pens. I know your video was three (3) years ago, but I just wanted to make a suggestion: You mentioned you wish you could measure the Ahab but it was off the chart, bit you could have measured it by turning your 6" x 8" board lengthwise which it is 8". You reminded me of what I forgot to do this morning inking up my Charlie Pen for the first time ever, and that is to clean it. 🤷 Woops.

I used to hate the Charlie that came with the 4.5oz because they felt "cheap" but then I realised they're really good "beater" fountain pens in case you don't really want to take your more expensive pens with you when you go out.

Thank you for this review including the Charlie pen.! Not many videos featuring it. I have 3 of them and love how they write, the only issue I have is them burping, I need to try to keep the ink levels higher than half full, I am supposing.!
Thank you for watching, Donna! I love and adore my Charlie Pen. It's always out and inked, ready to be used for drawing! Yes, burping is a big issue - I thought I could roll the dice on a sketch and it burped big time right at the end 😢I find that the heat from my hands and the ink level are both the culprit. It really needs to stay at least 3/4 full to do well. It was at almost exactly 1/2 when it burped on my sketch.

Ohhhh! Wow! Thank you so much for replying to my question! I hadn't thought about the extreme conditions and how the inks behave. I know that in humid Oklahoma (4 degrees as I write this 🥶), inks can act weird. In the winter, my Diamines tend to perform well, but then again I have not really subjected them to extremes for long. So very interesting, this hobby... isn't it???

It's the same nib as the Noodler's Creaper - which is in-between a Medium and a Fine. It's great for general writing and for art!

Or it’s just the name of the pen and Heart of darkness is a book by Joseph Conrad.

When I was in high school in the late 60s, we covered that book in our advanced English class. One of the most powerful stories I ever encountered. I've seen parallels to that story in events over the years.
There are a bunch of inks that come with that pen. I "got" (still in transit) mine with Polar Black =)

@@KitchenCounterCrafts I got it today. Charlie is adorable but the smell disturbs me and since I like EF nibs, it's not my favorite to write with. The Polar Black is great. Very very black. I have seen people's pictures of the ink having brown undertones but mine is a really pure black. I like it but if you want that brown undertone, you might be disappointed =)
@@cferracini I'm so glad you got your Charlie! If you set it on the windowsill and let the sun heat it up, the smell seems to go away quickly. I have not tried Polar Black because of the reviews but I am so glad yours is a good black for you!!! Try the Heart of Darkness next! :)
How would you characterize the differences between heart of darkness and noodlers black? Is it noticeably darker?
I have both the Noodler's Black and the HOD. I used the Noodler's Black and found it to be kind of lighter than I wanted. It had like a dark grayish vibe to it. Of course, it could be because I don't always remember to shake the bottle!
HOD is super, inky, deep black - like liquid eyeliner (not the consistency but the color!). I LOVE IT!!!
Also, I sketch on whatever I get my hands on like a receipt, back of an envelope or copy paper (my favorite!). HOD is awesome with all those.

@@KitchenCounterCrafts Thanks! I just used N.Black for the first time and I'm a little disappointed with the greyish-ness of it. Might get a bottle of HOD to replace. I'm more of a note taker than a sketcher, but I'll check out your insta!
@@neknim Glad that helped! You can also try Noodler's X Feather, but that is a bit difficult to clean out of the pen. I have heard that it's even darker than the HOD. I like that the HOD comes in a giant bottle & I can use it without feeling like I have to get a 2nd job! :)
