I love how my procrastination keeps getting rewarded with new workbench options.
I guess I struck a nerve! I bet Rex wouldn't encourage anyone to sit around not making stuff, waiting for the perfect design, and that's not what I'm doing (I promise). I just love making things of all sorts and woodworking is sadly a little ways down the list of what I'm currently set up to tackle. My grandfather was accomplished in this, though, and I've inherited some of his tools and some of his attitudes, and I do very much appreciate this easier entry into what I'm sure will become a consuming, lifelong pursuit.

Thanks Rex. I was all set to build your English Jointers Bench as a second bench in the workshop. To the point that I had gone to the local big box store with my moisture meter just to see how wet the material was. As soon as my next paycheck hit I was going to buy the lumber. Then, my cousin called me. My grandfather was his godparent. My cousin was cleaning out his garage and wanted to know if I wanted to have the workbench my grandpa had built him. Do I want it?!?!?! Of course, I was grateful and excited. Don't have a lot of things from my grandpa. All I would need was a vise and I would be set. When I got there to pick it up, I saw it already had a vise. Best. Workbench. Ever. Free and my grandpa made it 50+ years ago.

My 2 cents. If you are on a super tight budget look around your area for someone giving away a wood kitchen table and cut the top down for the top of your workbench. I got a square solid oak table for free and reshaped the top into a rectangle. So now I have a workbench with a solid 1-1/2" thick top. I look around for free wood and free furniture like dressers and nightstands to get a lot of my wood for free. I use drawer sides to make nice little boxes and you can do all kinds of stuff for a low cost.

2:08 - Can vouch for that. I started woodworking with a background in unrelated factory work. So naturally, I envisioned assembly line processes. I had to also become a process engineer. And that is totally doable... but on a small scale, it's terribly inefficient. I was spending so much time designing and building jigs (designing takes valuable time), and I thought to myself "There's gotta be a better way".
In the course of my RUclips education, I found myself amazed at hand tool woodworkers. I'd see what needed done in their project, ponder the jigs and setup required... and then be stunned when they just picked a saw and made their cut. 🤦🏻‍♂️
So now, I'm buying lots of hand tools. 😆 I find that practice is a necessity, in order to do what the old-timers easily manage, but it can be done. And it's much quicker than I would've previously imagined. 🫡🍻

I've got the lumber in the basement acclimating. We are fortunate here in north America, especially east and west coasts, to have a ready supply of lumber.
The bench looks like it measures 34-1/2" tall. I checked Paul Sellers's opinion, and he says 38" is his choice. Looking at the plans again, and it looks like the Krueger Bench can be built to 36" tall with the same plans and parts. Just cut all leg pieces 1-1/2" longer and take care of the cuts you make in the rear leg pieces in boards D and E.
Oh, and patrons get the plans without charge. Did Rex mention that? Well worth it!

No, I am not going out and spend any more money on new tools. This video is no exception. The "BEST" work bench I have ever seen is the work bench that a person can build, with the tools they have on hand, that fits in their shop, and allows the user to work in the style they are comfortable working. 😠

Great video Rex. I have a bench made of dimensional lumber in my garage that has been there since the house was built (only 52 years but, after that long, the wood is very stable). It isn't as good as I would like for wood working, but theres's enough wood in it to up-cycle to something like the Minimum Timber Bench. I'm going to get your plans and build an MTB. I'm going to make one change and that will be to make a top using three layers of 3/4" MDF for weight and flatness.

Seems like an excellent design. Very similar to what I ended up building. I used two 2x2s in the center of mine and left one unfastened so I could lift it and use the gap as a place for my pull-based bench hooks to go. It lets me have pretty small bench hooks that work with my Japanese pull saws.
I have several jigs that are on bench hooks and little space to store them, so being able to make them smaller is very nice. You could probably leave the center 2x4 unfastened or use two 2x2s and leave one unfastened if you don't want to move something as heavy as a 2x4.

Thanks Rex, this was a wonderful project. The course and plans worked well for me. My #5 did all the jointing. It took a little longer but no big deal. The nearest Australian timber sizes were 240x45 and 90x45, converting the cut list to metric was not hard.
Thanks again - and here’s to a wonderful new year to all.

I think a general vibe works best for benches, just a few points about support and cross bracing to fit whatever material you got to work with. I raided the scratch and dent lumber at a big box store to get a few split 2X4s, the widest chunk they had in the pile for an apron and sides, and some simple hardware. Dirt cheap, ugly as sin, and sturdy enough for everything I've thrown at it so far.

Very simple and inexpensive. Perfect for most newbies and someone with tight budgets. I just bought enough poplar to build 3 of these benches for $360. Hard woods haven’t gone up that much like construction lumber did accept walnut and exotic woods.

Rex, you're a great salesman, so it's a good thing you aren't into hawking all kinds of nifty, must-have, expensive devices that will be left to gather dust after a few attempts at use. Now this down-to-earth bench design looks about right for my immediate needs -- well, with a few modifications of course. 😊 So I'll ante up for the plans. Thanks for the inspiration, guy.

    Hello, Mr. Krueger;
Thank you for this & for all you do, Rex!
That's just what I've been looking for.
    Unfortunately, our heat died.
We had to spend more than $524 to be sure we have heat.
At least the cooling still works.
I think next month's power bill will be maybe halved despite the storm.
I've wanted some of your plans & I've downloaded a few of the free plans.
Sometime early next year I should be able to buy the course & plans.
Maybe the price will be the same.
I'm still trying to find some blocks, 1 for chopping & 1 for my anvil.
I really like the way you were doing the simple manual wookworking.
I've been learning (& relearning) some green woodworking techniques.
I'm 67, when I was a young boy there were still old timers around who did it this way.
I like doing hand work so I really appreciate your sharing your 'how-tos'.
    Have a GREAT day, Neighbor!

A similar design to the Paul Sellers one I built a few years back, and I can see it will work really well. I live in the UK so starting your list with 'a few' 2 x 10s is like saying saying 'once you return from Mars...'
Mine was totally 2x4s (mostly poor quality), but when laminated with cheap PVA everything came straight, true and MASSIVE. A huge fun learning experience. Two resto record vices that looked aweful obtained from Ebay, but the rotary wire brush quickly turned them into things of beauty. Guys have a go! with real-world people like Rex and Paul to guide you, you can progress quickly and gain confidence and skill.
In the UK the next barrier will be where can I get the wood for my projects? Initially I practiced with pallet wood (a good training ground and so far FREE), but this year have been given some logs by friends who've had trees cut down. Took me a while to learn how to split and mill them, but I have enough wood to keep me going for a couple of years - mainly maple and sycamour and a tiny bit of oak. None of which I could ever have bought, even if I could find somewhere to sell me some here.
Happy days - the beat goes on!

Started wood working about 4 months ago and have still not spend any money on wood. There is a lot of free wood lying around from pallets to old construction lumber. My latest haul was five 4x4 and 17 2x6 all ten feet. They were weathered but still fine. I plan on making another bench out of them over Christmas break.

    Cool design! Really elegant!
(I won't need it though, because I got lucky for my bench: I found a beat up, paint stained workbench with two missing legs for 90$, but it was a classic European bench made of solid beech with a face vice and tail vice. I needed to rebuild the tressles and clean it up, but everything else was great.)

First off, thanks so much for this video. Really, really appreciate the thought and engineering you out into this design (purchased plans!) Had a question for you: would this bench be able to take dog holes and holdfasts? How about a tail vise, maybe chucking a support block on the end? Thanks!

Nice design. Way to minimize the amount of lumber needed.
I had planned to build a bench before the prices went through the roof. I had budgeted roughly $100 for the lumber. Within a few months it doubled to over $200. I decided to buy a non-woodworking bench for other projects, but this new bench can be modified for woodworking.
Now that lumber prices have returned to a more normal level, I'm going to have to give your plans a look for a dedicated woodworking bench.

most big stores have a pile of free pallets outside. most of it is fire wood but some beams can be salvaged. ask around in your neighborhood and at construction sides, some one might have a scrap laying around. you wont find the 2 by 12 boards but you can probably find enough for the frame.

I have nearly completed my build based on the plans and instruction video... One suggestion I would make to anyone building this is to use #8 countersunk finish washers when mounting the top boards. I found during the build that the #8 screws easily pulled themselves deep into the SPF lumber, which is fine for the base pieces but not on the top - especially if you're going to be experimenting and removing the top on occasion. I used an appropriately sized forstner bit to drill the countersink hole to depth and then installed as per the plans otherwise. The washers allow the screw to get a good hold and not simply tear through the board.
