The historic occasion of the first state visit to the United Kingdom by the President of Ireland culminated in a special evening of music, spoken word and dance at the Royal Albert Hall.
President Michael D Higgins’ four day visit, hosted by Queen Elizabeth II, has been hailed as a huge success, with both heads of state celebrating Anglo-Irish links, the contributions to UK culture made by Irish communities and the political progress between the two states.
Members of these Irish communities and representatives of both states filled the Hall on 10 April 2014 for Ceiliúradh (Celebration), to continue the celebrations with a host of artists and musicians both Irish and of Irish descent.
Backed by a house band, special guests including Paul Brady, The Gloaming, Fiona Shaw,Elvis Costello,Imelda May and John Sheahan took to the stage to showcase the best of Irish culture and talent. A memorable moment came when Oscar-winning songwriter Glen Hansard led the guest vocalists and the 5,000 packed into the Hall in The Auld Triangle, a song made popular by The Dubliners which has become something of a modern Irish anthem, with Villagers vocalist Conor O'Brien adapting the lyrics of his verse to mark the occasion: “On a fine spring evening / we all lay dreaming / of a future gleaming / in the Royal Albert Hall”.

A hungry feeling
Came o'er me stealing
And the mice were squealing
In my prison cell
And that auld triangle went jingle-jangle
All along the banks of the Royal Canal
To begin the morning
The screw was bawling
"Get up ya loser and clean up your cell!"
And that auld triangle went jingle-jangle
All along the banks of the Royal Canal
Now the screw was peeping
As the lag lay sleeping
Dreaming about his girl Sal
And that auld triangle went jingle-jangle
All along the banks of the Royal Canal
Oh! the wind was rising
And the day declining
As a lady, I'm praying
In my prison cell
And that auld triangle went jingle-jangle
All along the banks of the Royal Canal
In the female prison
There are 75 women
And among them now, I wish I did dwell
Then that auld triangle could go jingle-jangle
All along the banks of the Royal Canal
Anyone 2023?
2024 here
As a South African with Irish roots this makes me homesick for a country I’ve never seen
As an Englishman I love u folk
Paul Brady and Elvis Costello are having a fine time. Everything about this video performance is perfect. imho.
Big performance the audience was fully engaged, worth going miles to see.
Some were... others seemed offended by the Irish singing a song about British abuse in Albert Hall... people oft forget the abuse that the Irish suffered, evening in decades not so long forgotten.
@@colebyrnes7889 ahhh stop it x

Stunning version of stunning song, so heartfelt and captivating. The participation of the audience creates a wonderful atmosphere. I can't put into words the emotional impact this song has on me. Thank you for sharing :)

Sat in the kitchen with Mom and played Annie Lennox Every time we say goodbye , S O'Conner, You do something to me and this song. Learning this version at the moment and wrote up the full lyrics. Thought I'd post them here:
A hungry feeling
Come o’er me stealing
And the mice were squealing
In my prison cell
And the auld triangle
Went jingle-jangle
All along the banks
Of the Royal Canal
To begin the morning
The screws were balling
Get up! Get up! Ya’ bausey
And clean up your cell
And the auld triangle
Went jingle-jangle
All along the banks
Of the Royal Canal
The wind was sighing
As the day was dying
As I lay crying
In my prison cell
And the auld triangle
Went jingle-jangle
All along the banks
Of the Royal Canal
On a fine Spring morning
As the light were a’dreaming
And the seagulls were a’squealing
All above the prison walls
And the auld triangle
Went jingle-jangle
All along the banks
Of the Royal Canal
Oh the screw was peeping
And the lag was sleeping
As I lay there weeping
For my girl Sal
And the auld triangle
Went jingle-jangle
All along the banks
Of the Royal Canal
I wish to Jesus
They’d raise me wages
From thirty shillings
To two pounds ten
And the auld triangle
Went jingle-jangle
All along the banks
Of the Royal Canal
In the female prison
There are seventy-five women
And it is with them
That I wish I did well
And the auld triangle
Went jingle-jangle
All along the banks
Of the Royal Canal
On a fine Spring evening
We all lay dreaming
Of a future gleaming
In the Royal Albert Hall
And the auld triangle
Went jingle-jangle
All along the banks
Of the Royal Canal
And the auld triangle
Went jingle-jangle
All along the banks
Of the Royal Canal (x2)
Tremendous to hear an Irish rebel song sung loud and proud in the hallow hall of the Royal Albert 😊
EVERYTHING about this video makes me proud to be Irish - the instruments, the vocals, the crowd - UNTIL the end where they all look to the 'aristocracy' for approval. Sad..but unfortunately a reflection of our history in Ireland - and out present with the 'elite'. Enjoy with your own eyes and ears - forget the rest
The Irish president and his wife were up there.
The "aristocracy" cant never take something in someone's heart or mind enjoy the music and let them go cause they'll never be able to understand
@@murf8433 THIS. FUCKING THIS.
I found out about this song from Inside Llewin Davis, and there’s something so beautifully chaotic about this performance, compared to the controlled and precise acapella from the movie.
Must have been a once in a lifetime experience to be there live.
The best of the best.
Brings tears to my eyes
This is just brilliant. Cry every time.
Someones hitting that jingle jangle with every fibre!
Love Glen and this group - one of my favorites , truly Awesome!!
Thank you Glen. It’s really just the one
At 0:32 as great as the man Behan was the song was not written by Brendan Behan it was written by Dick Shannon.
@@firetv2169 Yes indeed it was Kathleen Behan's brother Peadar Kearney the wrote the National anthem and Dominc was a great song writer including McAlpines Fusilers and Take it down from the mast which are 2 of my favourites. He also wrote one of my favourite plays Teems of Times which gives a real insight into their young lives in Russell Street.
Would bring tears to a glass eye. Harmonies were a tad wild yet the blended in just perfectly.

When they brought out John the crowd let you know what band owns this song.
Yeeeeeeoooooooooo
Elvis Costello
Why was he in prison?
Who is the beauty in the black dress with red hair?
Lisa Hannigan :) More here ruclips.net/video/k5jhPmdEUQM/видео.html
Can someone list all the guests singing after Glen?
Paul Brady, Lisa Hannigan, Donal Lunny, Imelda May, John Sheahan (The Dubliners), Elvis Costello, Conor O'Brien (Villagers) that's in order of when they sing
@@caniceclooney1028 it's not Donal lunny before Imelda may, but I can't figure out who it is. Donal lunny is there alright, but that's not him singing.
It’s Andy Irvine
What the name of the lady with the curl in her hair ?
Lisa Hannigan 😀
That's Imelda may
It’s not right the end!
Leave this 1 to the people who know how to sing it.
Hi who is the guy at 6:22 mins into the video
Henry Kelly !
A Dick Shannon song, not a Brendan Behan song.
Jeeeeesus..... Not one person with a drink in their hand??????????
Hmm, any idea here besides Imelda May who might have made a pact with the devil?
When people ask me how Irish I am, I sing this song.
Jesus come soon.
Bought and paid for. Unfortunately. It’s all of them. Go£ come soon.
Absolutely butchered this tune
Luke Kelly version?
5/10 the drunks down the road do a better version
@Mr Feckless No they don't. This is brilliant
In fairness he is actually better than these guys by a good bit
Think I'll stick with Luke Kelly, this is dreadful
You're a fossil and a gobshite
God he is soo creepy, proffessional irish people, its like a butlins for paddys. I can garantee that guy would be the last up for any fighting during the rising or troubles.
Shambles of a performance all round
