  • Brendan shows us how to get into your Subaru vehicle if the key fob battery dies.
    All Subaru vehicles with the key-less entry fob will have a "real" key inside, you simply need to release the catch and pull it out in order to unlock your doors. Then with the wireless transmitter close to your push button start, you can press and start the car - as long as your car battery is not dead.

    Both of my key fob batteries needed to be replaced, and after a bit of a panic I found a RUclips video for replacing the batteries (super simple) and thought I'd better figure out what to do in case they actually DID die. I knew there was a key inside the fob but had no idea you just held the fob up to the starter and it would work as usual. Thank you!

    One suggestion; before any vehicle is delivered to the customer there should be a dedicated delivery where this type of information could be gone over. That would lead to customer satisfaction!

    Battery just died and I remembered seeing this video. Came back to watch and tried it, but when I opened my door my alarm went off and wouldn’t shut off. Kept pressing remote unlock button praying it would have SOME juice left, and it did! Got lucky and unlocked/turned off car alarm and was able to start car before fob battery went out again. Will need to test more when I’m at home.

    When the battery is dead, the fob does not transmit anything. There is an RFID chip in the key that a receiver near the start button senses and that's what allows it to start.

      The RDID doesnt use the battery to START the car. We turned down a 2017 Outback because my wife hates push button start on a car. The GPS system did not work eather .Also the milage seemed excessive. It had almost 100k. We went to another dealer with almost the exact same features for a 2015 with only 48k( lease?) and key ignition. My wife really liked the 2015 and they gave us a much better trade in on our vehicle too . The other place acted like they didnt even want our vehicle.

    The video fails to address the fact that the alarm will sound if the manual key is used. And that you can't disable the alarm with a dead fob battery. I frantically had to replace the dead battery while the alarm was going off just so that I could disable it. Operating the door locks on the car didn't stop it, but I'm wondering if the procedure of holding the fob up to the start button (and starting the car) would deactivate the alarm. Also, the fob has a receiver, not a transmitter--it's the car that "pings" the fob, and then recognizes the fob, which allows the starting procedure.
    As soon as your display tells you to replace the battery, replace the battery. You have one or maybe two days left. My OEM fob battery lasted for two, maybe three years. I'm lucky to get three months out of a Duracell replacement CR2032. When you replace the battery and are disassembling the fob, be sure you don't inadvertently activate the alarm--the buttons are easy to press by mistake. This is easily the worst aspect of this car. Otherwise an excellent ownership experience.

  • @AlaskaErik
    @AlaskaErik 6 лет назад

    Not mentioned is that the battery size is CR2032. I get them in bulk on Amazon. This is the same battery that's used in my other three vehicle fobs and probably most fobs in general. Someone else has posted a video on how to change the battery.

    I just bought a 2008 Subaru Forester. The seller told me "Don't lock the doors and don't use the key to lock the doors, either!" Then he proceeded to tell me that it "might" need a battery. Or I could buy a new key fob on ebay and reprogram it so it will work on my car. We noticed a problem with our 2015 right from the start. It only had 48k but the battery acted under powered. Indeed, while cleaning out the car, the battery went dead. Upon inspection, I found the specific battery size was indeed recommended by Subaru, but listed as being too small over all, especially with all the on board electronics. Its a simple fix. A larger output battery. We have had no issues since, even with our colder than usual temperatures this winter. Subaru really screwed the pooch on that one!

      We are old school. lol. My wife turned down a 2017 Outback because it had no key. The milage was excessive for the year as well. We settled on a 2015 with way less miles and no push button starter or fob to lose. As stated. At least with a key, its habit to hang it up. With a fob, its going in a bag or someplace. Then if you misplace it, you only get one. Who the hell wants a car with only one key?

      What the solution?

    • @scottfirman
      @scottfirman 5 лет назад

      You will find almost every car on the market now does that. Its best to buy a solar charger that you can plug into the lighter socket and leave on the dash. If you park it in a parking garage, be prepaired to call a towing service or keep a jump pack in the trunk. I know of one guy that disconnects his battery at the airport before he goes. He keeps the wrench for the battery in the car. Yes, you have to manually open the door. Eather way, you eill. The difference being, no dead battery and no fee for a jump. I had to install a deadmans switch on the battery for an older woman because she only drove her car to church on sundays and her battery was always low or dead. The garage she took her car to told her to drive it more or install an underhood switch on the battery. They refused to do it because they claimed it could" damage the Computer" . She has been using that switch for the past 5 years, no problems other than the clock time is wrong. Hers is an older car by the way.
