I forgot to mention when putting your key fob in sleep mode, you can simply wake it up by clicking any button on the key fob. You’ll need your key fob to be awake to start the car.
Actually, you shouldn't need to even re-enable the proxy sensor to start the car. Foot on the brake, hold it up to the start button, the car will 'strum' and you can press the button as normal. The fob has an RFID tag inside, which is how you would start the car with a dead fob battery. At least that's how it worked on my 16 Legacy 2.5 Limited and 19 Forester. The process for disabling proxy is different though, so it could have changed; Therefore I will be trying this on my 22 Legacy XT Limited.
@@ryanslemmer5905 yep, you can do that too! That’s a good way to start your car with the key on sleep mode or if the key fob battery is dead.
@@alexpmo Does the 2020 Subaru Forester have this feature? I'm looking at a pre-owned one at my local lot... its a 2020 forester Limited..
@@brentfulton5209 yep, it works on 2020 also!
@@alexpmo I stopped by the local lot and it doesn't have that extra button on the tailgate like the ride in your video does.... So I guess it doesn't work with this forester..
You just helped us with our autistic child - if he gets separated from us he can always get back in the car to wait for us. The rule is for him to return to the car. This is a huge help!! He quickly learned the code and this tip is such a life saver!
So cool! So many unique ways to use this feature!
1. Hold down the "Lock" button on the key fob and simultaneously press the PIN entry button located on the beside the back license plate on the trunk door until the car emits a beep sound. This action activates the PIN setup mode.
2. Press the "Unlock" button on the key fob. You now have 30 seconds to complete the PIN setup process.
3. To set the first digit of your PIN, press the PIN entry button the desired number of times, then stop. The car will emit a beep to confirm that the number has been registered. Repeat this step for each subsequent digit of your PIN, clicking the PIN entry button the appropriate number of times for each digit.
4. Once you have entered all five digits of your PIN, the car will start beeping continuously. This indicates that the PIN has been successfully set.
5. To unlock the car using the PIN, simply use the PIN entry button by entering the digits of your PIN using the same procedure you used during setup.
Do you press 10 times to enter number '0'?
Button on the "driver's door"? What are you talking about?
@@davidbrianfaulkneryes, what button on the door?
Your step 4 is incomplete. When you get the continuous beep you have to input all five digits of the PIN again (in other words, repeat step 3). THEN the car will unlock and your PIN is set.
Alex, I want to thank you for this, because it saved my butt! I left my keys in my 2013 Forrester premium, and when I remote started my car through my phone, it locked my keys inside! Because I saw your video and previously set up my secret pin code, I was able to retrieve my keys with no issue. 👍🏻
This one function has sold me on the Outback. I live in Australia and this vehicle is perfect for me when I go to the beach, snorkeling, kayaking, and hiking. Being able to deactivate and leave the key fob in the car, and use a pin code to get back in, will save my worry of my keys getting lost, or getting wet when doing those activities. 👍
Another MASSIVE plus for me, which I think you should talk about if you haven't already done so, is how the seats can fold down flat right through from the front passenger seat, to the rear of the car.
Every other car I have folded the seats down in have always had the front seat fold down on top of the rear seat when folded down.
The Outback seat can be moved forward enough that once the head rests are taken out, the front seat can be folded down flush with the rear folded seat, making an almost perfectly flat tray from front to back.
It makes this vehicle perfect for doing an overnight camp in as well. And being able to deactivate the key fob also means I can lock myself in the car if camping over night inside the car without the worry of someone opening the car while I am in it.
We've had our (Aussie) Outback touring in beautiful pearl white for a few weeks now and got to test it on some light off road tracks yesterday, it handled them impressively and can say that X mode does work well, even with wheels off the ground!
Great points and tips!!!! Thank you
You just saved me from worrying about leaving my key stashed on the beach while surfing; therefore you may have saved my vehicle from being stolen! You rock man, thanks!
Happy to help! It's a neat feature to have
@@alexpmoAlex I set the PIN fine but struggling to lock the car with the keys in it despite the sleep mode technique. Any tips?
@@whsot yes I would also like to know.
@@whsot OK I got it. Tested on my 2018 Crosstrek, but should be the same on others.
After pin was set up follow these steps.
1. While all but the driver door is closed, put key fob in sleep mode, and place it inside the car.
2. Press the lock button inside the driver door, all doors should lock.
3. Pull out the door handle while closing the door, this should keep all doors locked while closing the door.
Done. Go catch a wave.
To unlock, use the pin, pausing between digits, listening to the beeps. It will open up like magic.
Does it keep this pin setting or do you have to set it each time you want to do this? @@Xyler89
This works for my 2016 Subaru Outback as well. Not exactly same procedures but it works similar like this. Great video, thanks for sharing.
I bought a 2022 Outback today and I asked the dealer if they had the pin code access on this one. Three different men there didn't know (the fourth said he remembered hearing something about it but didn't know how to do it). One said... "we're hiring" lol Thanks for the information.
I use a Faraday pouch for the fob and put it in the trunk of my 2015 Legacy when i park at the airport for several days. When I return, i enter the the code. The doors unlock and I use the trunk switch to open it and take out the fob and the pouch . It's the same pouch that keeps the fob signal suppressed from thieves at home. Amazon has a good selection of pouches. i don't like putting the fob to sleep.
Programing the pin code is a prerequisite for disabling the keyless access. You can turn off your key fob. No need for a pouch. Everything is well described in manual.
Thanks Alex! This saved my butt! Accidentally left my keys in my forester the other day and when I remote started it from the app, it locked my fob in the car. Had I not programmed the PIN code, I would have been sunk!
couldn't you unlock from the app also?
@@charlestaricska8652fr😂 my question too also didn’t the car beep at you for leaving the key in the car?
@@cassandravilla531 I thought the Key fob had to be deactivated for the code to work ...
OMG! A billion thanks!!! Wish I'd seen this when you first posted. Locked keys, phone everything in the car and we were 17 miles from anywhere. Subaru couldn't unlock it because there was no signal where the car was. This would have save me and now it will. Also, I wanted to store a key in my roof box but it kept unlocking the car. I am forever grateful. You have a new subscriber!
Perfect. I have a '21 Forester and I'm a trail runner and have been carrying along the bulky fob on my runs. Now I know!
I was just going to ask if this works for the 2022 forester but it seems like it will! :) thanks!
Yes, this works for the Legacy as well, I own a 2015 and I've had this programmed since new. When my vehicle was in the shop once, I needed to get something and the shop didn't have the key readily available, so I told them not to worry, I don't need it, and opened the doors from the trunk. They just stood there in shock...LOL...Told me I need to work there and show them how to do that
Thanks for the insight! It’s amazing how many people are unaware this exists. Although, that’s part of the fun in it!
I have a 2019 Ascent and it works on it
Ahhh, that makes me hopeful it'll work on the 2014 Forester XT I'm buying this weekend🤞👍
Would've never figured this out without your video. Ive watched quite a few of these kinds of videos and never saw anything about this. Thanks so much!
Just bought a 2024 Crosstrek and seeing that the “Get Started’ guide is 160 pages, I am especially grateful for your videos - thank you!
I just got a 2020 Forester from a friend who can no longer drive. It has a TON of features not found on my old 2013 Impreza. Your videos have answered SO many questions - many of which I didn't know enough to ask! Yeah, I know that the answers are all in the manual - somewhere - but I didn't feel like taking a week to find them. Please keep up the good work!
Excellent! Just did this and am relieved to have the option. I took my keys in a dry bag on the river twice last week and was worried something would go wrong. Not again.
Hi Alex, thank you for the great tutorial I just took my 23 Forester home. I do a lot of outdoor activities which don't necessitate carrying a large key fob. Thanks again for the tutorial and the added feature of disabling the key fob I was wondering about that especially re-enabling it
Hey Alex- Thanks for all of the videos that you are making. I just bought a 2023 Forester touring and I'm perplexed by all of the gadgetry inside and out. Your videos help me to understand what I need to know about my car. My Forester is by far the nicest car that I have ever owned and I want to get the most out of it by understanding what it can do. Thank you for the hard work that you do to make these videos. It is much appreciated.
I'm in the exact same boat @markbeedy6041! 😉 I couldn't believe it when I saw all the manuals in the glove compartment! I am more a 'visual learner' vs reading everything - so I really appreciate the videos. I had my last car 16 yrs (not a Subaru). I wasn't haven't problems with it - but I'm moving to northern MN this summer (from FL)....and just felt it was time. I do want to get the most out of my car - but I am a bit overwhelmed with all the gadgets - 'bells & whistles'. I've always stuck to the basics, but I can already tell that I do like the features I have learned about so far on this '23 Forester Limited!! I'm going to my class thing at the dealership in a couple weeks, did you attend one near you? I'm hoping it will be helpful as well!! ENJOY your new car!! 👍
Thank you Alex, for us old timers who moved from a 2003 manual shift Toyota Celica to 2021 Outback XT was a major “technology shock”. Your videos are easy to follow and fun. Now I am lovin’ my Outback!! BTW I still love driving my Yellow Celica, too! jj
Glad to help! Thanks Jan!
Scotty is that you??
😂
Old Timer? 2003? I miss my '76 Celica fastback and speed shifting that thing while power sliding through turns. Now that's an old timer. It had a tendency to body roll and understeer. My Subaru corners waaay better than that Celica ever did. Stays nice and flat and that all-wheel-drive just zips through the turns without any screeching tires.
@@patricklundquist9869lol, you should have seen the look on the salesman's face when I turned his outback sideways in a poweslide during a test drive to see how it breaks traction.
@@theaberrantdon I've given salesmen white knuckle rides but that tops anything I've done. Now that I think of it, I wouldn't even know how to correct an all-wheel drive vehicle in a slide. Maybe Alex can give us a demo?...
Tried it on both our Subarus. Works like a champ. Thanks for this video.
We just bought a 2024 Outback Onyx. Will pick it up next week. I have been watching and saving ALL your videos ! VERY useful !
Thanks, Alex. Certainly much easier to understand your explanation and demonstration than the description in the manual.
Wish I had seen this video two weeks ago, when I did a mud run. My 2019 Forester has this feature, but never set it up. Seemed really complicated. You made it very simple. Thank you. Next mud run, I won't have to carry the key fob.
thanks! glad you found it helpful
I’ve had my Crosstreck for 4 years this month and never knew this. I’m excited to try this tomorrow! Thank you.
Did work on my Subaru Forester Sport 2019 😉. Thank you so much for your tips 👍
This was a great tutorial. I sat for close to an hour trying to set this on our '22. The instructions in the manual are a bit ambiguous - and because of the lockdowns and lack of staff no one at my local dealership could help. Thank you!
Glad I could help! Thanks for watching

Thank you Alex for this information. It's very helpful
Went from a 04 dodge Cummins 2500 to a 2023 OBW, every time I get in my OBW I smile and learn something new about it! I really didn’t know any features from my sales person, the service department guy showed me some cool stuff about the tailgate sensor, your channel and the info you put out should be standard knowledge for Subaru dealers across the board. I hope Bachman really treats you well and keeps encouraging you to put more knowledge out there, I’ll prob make the trip to purchase my next Subaru from ya as well! Thanks again!
I just tried this on my 2019 Crosstrek and my wife’s 2018 Outback (without EyeSight), and it worked fine on both of them. Thanks for this AWESOME tip!
This worked on my 2020 Outback 3.6R in Australia. I'm sure this amazing tip will come in handy in the future.
Thank you for these videos! I am learning SO much!

I just recently bought an 2016 Subaru Outback Limited automatic which I love. Since 1991 I have had Subaru's. I just recently came upon your RUclips videos which are most helpful so I thank you very much for showing us these hacks. Keep up the great work!!
Is the pin code option on your 2016? We have a 2016 Limited 4 cylinder model and it would be great if ours does.
Alexi learn something new about my Subaru 2017 every time I watch one of your videos great explanations and demonstrations
Thanks, Alex. Very useful feature. It might be in the owners manual, but so many pages to get deep into it
My 09 Wrx recently got totaled and after my accident decided to purchase a 2022 outback. Since my Wrx didn’t have any of this new technology it’s awesome to learn about it before my outback arrives next month. Thank you very much for your detailed and informative videos!!
You’re welcome! Congrats on the new Outback!
Alex, watching another video without powered tailgate, presented another set of instructions: 1. to deacitave tailgate sensor by using unlock button and unused tailgate button. the dealer guy also mentioned different steps needed to put remote into sleep and to reawaken. yours and his were both newer outbacks. just need to reconfirm steps for your particular vehicle with O/M
I’ve had my Subi for 3 years! And you taught me so much just now. Mind blown.
Wow, so much to learn about my Subaru! Thank you for sharing so much information!!
That is one nice looking car. That generation, trim level, and color, are my favorite.

Thank you. very easy to understand. its amazing how many dealer salesmen, advisors dont know about this feature
Thanks Michael! I actually never knew about this feature until this year. But I've only been selling Subaru for about a year and a half.
Exactly I just bought a 2022 and my salesperson said it did not have this... And it does. And this video is way easier to learn how to do it than reading the manual
I’ve tried to set this up on my 2019 Forrester Sport but couldn’t quite figure out to do it. Your video makes it look so easy!
Thanks, works with forester 22. Great presentation mate
Thanks, very helpful!
I tried this on my 2022 Legacy, and it worked like a charm. Thanks!
Good tip! It works on my new 2024 Cross-trek.
Now... if I can just get that annoying seat belt chime to stop when something is on the back seats.
Just buckle the belts. It will stop.
This is really new and valuable ❤❤❤ thank u
Thank you for the video. Blessings to you.
Thank you, I will love this feature for running
Great info. Thanks. Will be trying it on my 2024 OBW.
Thank you! You are such a great teacher!
Thanks Pamela!
I have a 2020 Impreza and this code works. I use my car for work and I use the tailgate numerous times a day. Thank you
Thanks Alex, your video helped me set pin on my new 2022 Impreza Limited. The manual was very confusing, telling you to enter a pin but not how. Also, thanks for showing how to sleep the key fob, my salesman told me I’d be able to set a pin for entry but I’d have to put my key in an rfd box to lock it in the car.
congrats on your Impreza Limited, how is the price?
I had no idea this was a thing and now I'm all about it, Imma go hiking just to use the feature. thanks mate.
Awesome job! Great feature 👏🏻
My 2019 Ascent touring had this feature and I didn't know it had this until just this year thanks to this video. It was a couple months before our lease was up so I never set it up. I will be setting this up in our new 2022 Outback touring xt. Really enjoy your videos!!
Life saver. ❤ Just set this up on my mother's car. Thank you

Awesome video thank you so much!
It’s on our 2016 Levorg too,; didn’t know you could put a Subaru key fob into sleep mode, that was good info.
I just picked up my Wilderness today and set this feature. I couldn't be more pleased!! 😊
congrats on the wilderness!
This worked for my 2022 legacy. Just a note, there were no secret button, just used the one for opening the trunk. Thank you very much.
I’m blown away! I have a 2016 Outback Limited Edition and I absolutely love her! Never looked back after I switched from a Lexus! I actually have to change my headlights and fog light bulbs tomorrow!
Thank you Alex. It works just fine on my 2020 Legacy Touring but don’t depend on the manual because it doesn’t explain. The legacy doesn’t have the extra button like the Outback. The same button that opens the trunk is the same that does the pin code, the secret is once you put it in pin code mood the button doesn’t respond to the trunk opener and only respond to the key pad but does the same thing. Note on the Legacy you have to hold down the lock button and click the unlock button twice to disable the key and using the same method to enable it. Hope that helps Legacy owners. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for this video.
Anytime I forget the procedure for entering a new code, I pull this video up - thanks a bunch!
Keep it updated, thank you so much.
What is the procedure if you mess up tapping in the pin code? Wait 1,2,3 minutes to restart or ?? Love your videos Alex! Keep em coming. Thanks!
For me, I locked it with the fob and started over.
To answer your question this worked perfectly on my 2019 Subuaru Ascent thank you very helpful
I just bought my first Subaru on Saturday. It's a new 2021 Forester. I've been watching your videos to help me figure out all the hidden gems on my car. I didn't even know the Subaru logo on my fobs had a purpose until I watched this video.🤦
My last car was a 2001 Toyota Corolla that had a cassette player and radio. LOL Needless to say my mind is mush with the overload of things I'm learning about my new car! 😬
It happens to a lot of people! I've had people go from thinking their key fob was broken to now realizing they were hitting the unlock button instead of lock lol
@@alexpmo My best friend and her hubby have a 2017 Outback and they weren't aware of all the different things their car could do until I told them to watch your videos. They know not all of the newest and coolest things apply to their car tho. BTW- don't fully open a moonroof when it's 40°f outside and you're doing 75mph down the road. The inside of my car went from comfortable to North Pole cold in 2.7 seconds flat as soon as the glass slid back! I just had to see how my Forester handled with it wide open. Just followed your instruction, works great on 2019 Ascent (1st gen)(Limited) - thank you !
You're welcome! Such a cool feature
Forester 2022. Thank you, this saved me when the instruction manual for Forester 2022 had a mistake in it. In the Subaru manual for the second thing you do (step 4) it says to press unlock "until" you hear a chirp sound instead of "to stop" the chirp, sound which had me beat!
I made the attempt on a 2018 legacy and it worked! Thanks!
That’s a great option, thanks for sharing that! 🙏😉
This video was great bc I do a lotta stuff where I don't want that fob around. Alex calls attention to the beep that you get when you're setting up the code in your garage. But under "normal" conditions I rarely hear the beep in a parking lot. And the normal timing of a pause between entering the 5 numbers, like Alex does, works EVERY Time.
PRO TIP: if you don't put the fob in sleep mode (by mistake/thought you did but you didn't) and you return and start entering the PIN the beeper will beep continuously on each press of the button if you can hear it.
SOLUTION: Try the hatch first. Then enter the PIN if it doesn't release. For what it's worth.
This also works for my 2019 Impreza for sure.
great! thanks!
This was so helpful
