If your Subaru battery is dead and you need to shift it into Neutral Brendan shows us how to use the Shift Lock option.
Please use this solution if all else fails. Try starting the vehicle regularly and jumping your dead battery to start it first.

Thank you for the info. This has got to be one of the worst designed parts on any car - not just a Subaru. If you are 20 miles from nowhere and don't have a long screw driver you are just plain screwed. Unbelievable. That could have easily been a simple button that is pushed to unlock the transmission. This should be the stuff of a class action lawsuit.

How about how to unlock steering wheel? If car is in garage, and you need to push it out, you might also need to turn the wheel.
Just insert the ignition key and turn it to unlock

Thanks for the tip!!! I got a 2014 Outback and the same thing happened dead battery and the car was in between the garage and the driveway was cleaning the car out lol.. end up using a paint brush to put it in Neutral since all my screwdrivers are too small in my trunk is locked

Thanks for this video! Needed it last second after rolling the car out dead in neutral! Found that a CHOPSTICK works just as well to stick it down there and release the transmission! I'll be keeping that in the glovebox! And now i know what that little circle is in the upper left by the shifter. Oh always learning! :)

Thx! I was stuck at the pump and the car wouldn't go into neutral to push away to charge it up. A guy found your video and this tool was in the car. And, yes, this video was way too long. We were dying (me and the guy who pushed me away) wondering how to move this thing to a safe distance to charge it. I was ready with my charger, but didn't count on the gears being stuck or no charge left at all.

After you get the car cranked, then what do you do? Do just pull the screwdriver out and the use the gear shifter or do you have to do something to re-engage it?

The video starts at 1:50. For mine you had to put the screwdriver in and gently pull toward you while testing the gear shifter to see if it is free. (foot on brake).
Also does not unlock the steering. Other than that thank you very much for the video. It worked for me.

FYI This works on a 95 Legacy, too. Have to pop the trim piece around the shifter off and then stick your small screwdriver in the hole.

Had to quickly get the car started. Took forever to get to it. Video: Pop the cap by the shifter. Stab a 5inch stick in. DONE.

I went on a cruise for a week and my 2018 impreza sport's battery was dead. Is this normal for imprezas? I have read they have battery draining issues. Any recommendations. I took it to Auto zone and they said battery is fine.
A guy at Subaru recently confirmed what we all knew, that modern cars drain batteries with all their crap even when nothing is really on. The only thing he recommended, because I'm bad at sporadic driving too, is to give it a good drive, often. With mine it's 3 weeks. Except in cold. Except when the battery doesn't charge to capacity. Except when the recent drive doesn't really give a good charge and has all those battery convenience drains (in, out, stop, start). Every start needs a good drive. A guy recently got stuck pushing a plane back from the taxiway from starting and stopping and saving the engine time ($) during a long wait. Big mistake. It's a similar battery and engine.
It’s a harshly long video all to say put a screwdriver or other long skinny object in the little circular port by your shift knob. Was in a rush with my fiancee and jumper cables.

Screw driver that comes with it in the back of the car!! That’s a whole other issue when the battery dies...I keep my jumper cables in the trunk, which you can’t access when the car dies, and it opens to the back so you can’t even wrap your arm around it to reach into it from the back seat. Love Subaru but that is a huge design flaw unless there is something I’m missing...???
Can someone explain WHY they made it so hard to do this? Got stuck at an airport parking lot and didn't have a screwdriver handy. What a pain.

Thanks for the video. What a stupid design. I thought the future was supposed to improve ease of use. Girlfriend and I took forever trying to get a screwdriver that would fit and we were both late for work.
Let me conclude for you, use a flat head scroll driver to pop up the cap beside the shift nob, then plug in a long cross-bar scroll driver, then shift!

Just sayin. Why do you have to manually unlock shifter when the battery is dead. Thats dumb. I like advanced features in cars don’t get me wrong but having this controlled by something that requires power is a bad idea.
