    CPU temps in the ridge was high 70s in game. When rendering shaders or anything very cpu intensive it would hit its thermal limit of 95ºC but still maintain its boost clock up to 5.2GHz. Which is typical for the L12S. The NANOQ was mostly the same story for cpu intensive stuff and gaming temps were higher in the low to mid 80’s from what I seen. Admittedly, I was paying much closer attention to the GPU so I didn’t stress test the CPU much. Also - if it wasn't clear, the NANOQ was tested with the shell on.
    I see a few comments about the Terra - something to remember is that the height of the Founders 5090 is still 137mm, so you will have to have the spine in the #4 slot giving you around 62mm of cpu clearance. That wouldn't be enough for the L12S and does limit your cooling options for the 9800X3D (which I would recommend if you are going with a 5090). I wasnt sure if you all would think that was a realistic build due to the compromises you may need to make. But it could make for an interesting video/experiment. Let me know if you want to see that and ill make it happen!

      Wait. Shit. I didn't pay notice about the height of the 5080/5090 cooler design. My plan was to go for the 5080 in my terra. Got the L12SX77 on my 9800X3D. So of course i'm on the #7 slot... Such a perfect match for my 4070 Super FE....
      Wargh... My 2nd plan was to get the T1 and do it like Optimum: Black Ridge on the 9800X3D and offset for the gpu riser so i got clearance between back of the mainboard an the 5080 FE...
      (Option 3 actually is the DAN A4-H2O, but i don't wanna go back to an aio cooling for the cpu)
      Argh... I though i can atleast testing the 5080 in my Terra :<
      Or maybe i just leave the side panel on the gpu side off xD

      Hey! Can you confirm that the L12S fits on the Strix X870-I without modification or do you have to bend the heatpipes slightly? The Noctua website says they aren't compatible--but I would love to pair them and you seem to do so without trouble!

    The 5090 FE cooler actually shoots a decent amount of hot air out of the side, at an angle also. This could be why the thermals in the Ridge aren't as good as some might expected, some of that hot air could be blocked by the top panel.
    I think the setup that makes the most sense for this style of cooler is perhaps a sandwich style layout with side exhaust, something like the Meshlicious, set it to 4-slot mode, put the 5090 in the 2nd or 3rd slot (leave 1 or 2 slots of room for rear exhaust), and use front fans for exhaust (a typical negative pressure setup).
    Combined with a bit of undervolting and power limiting, this card should be an engineering marvel in terms of performance or power to temperature and noise.

    • @devyn.johnston
      @devyn.johnston  10 дней назад +3

      hmmm ill have to try this. I don't have a meshlicious specifically, but I can do that in a different case. I noticed that the top of the ridge was hotter to the touch than the side so you might be on to something.

      @@devyn.johnston You can watch the Schlieren imaging of the airflow pattern (Gamers Nexus has a video on this).
      I don't know in the sandwich style case you showed in this video, how much space you have behind the GPU, but I think the setup is already kind of similar. Nevertheless, it is keeping up with the Ridge thermal results.
      I think you can also kind of do this in a T1 (3-slot mode, leave 1 slot for exhaust) but the 4-slot configuration in the Meshlicious/Meshroom would still be best as it provides the most unobstructed airflow path.

    The Ridge temperatures were higher than I expected considering it has two 140mm fans pointed directly at the GPU and a supposedly clear path for the hot air to take. I assume the back cover isn't as transparent as it should be so some of the hot air might just be getting trapped inside the case. I wonder adding the three small fans on the top would help. Also curious if the two 140mm fans on that case help or hurt the temperatures. Some additional testing with the 140mm fans disabled, extra fans added on top, or even just with the back panel removed should make things clearer.

    Been watching the SFF builds for a while and really liked the insights on those smaller cases. The fractal ridge air funnel with the 5090 is such a nice fit.
    I am glad to see your approach when it comes to benchmarking and clearly naming frame gen a visual smoothing feature rather than a performance increase, it matters a lot not falling for misleading marketing so I am glad that you behave more like a reviewer than an influencer when it comes to informing your audience.
    And yes nvidia themselves in the past said frame gen should only be enabled if you already hit 60fps prior so seeing game devs advertising frame gen to hit 60fps is a red flag if I have ever seen one, thanks for calling that out as well! Would be cool to see a custom case, where there are open holes on the sides of a similar case, with 3d printed ducts on both sides. Essentially making the gpu entirely exposed to the outside air and making sure all the air exhausts unhindered.

    If you use a console style case, and have the GPU intake face the same side as the CPU, can you tell a noise difference if you point the exhaust side of the case towards you Vs the intake side? I wouldn't mind the heat coming at me. Or alternatively, have you ever mounted a console style pc on a stand behind your monitor?
    I have a Ryzen 5 3600X and rtx 3070 in my Dan A4 and the noise is too much to bear and the temps sometimes cause a shutdown, so I'm thinking I need a 7800X3D for that PBO2 to tame the temps (I already have a custom power curve for my GPU) and maybe a bigger CPU cooler. That will mean a new case so I'm considering a console style layout as it's probably more space efficient than a sandwich. As you already stated the cooler design is now push through so sandwich is going to be struggling with heat getting trapped.
    What do you think?
    Is there any benefit in going for sandwich layout still?

The fans behind pulls this hot air out, thus cool air enters from one side (front of GPU where the GPUs fans do most of the work), and exites at the other side. I think it’s very wierd that PCIE Gen 4 riser don’t work with this card. Like I get that this is a older standard and all but was this really an issue that NVIDIA couldn’t fix?

    Curious how the CPU temps were in the Nanoq, did the FE adversely affect temps?

    • @devyn.johnston
      @devyn.johnston  10 дней назад +3

      CPU in the ridge was high 70s in game.

    Inst there a way to place the fans as exhaust for the GPU on the ridge? setting then right up its own seems pointless to me

    @yibozhao1012 10 дней назад

    GPU Temp over 80ºC means the hotspot temp could hit 100ºC, and all these with fresh applied liquid metal, the temps will likely increase notably in 18 months or so without reapplying liquid metal,

    I am 100% not at all interested in purchasing a 5090. That’s partially due to the fact that I own a 4090 and the price to performance gain on the 5090 just doesn’t justify it for me. The raw performance jump is minimal based on benchmarks. This paper launch of the 50 series is very disappointing for those that truly wanted to get a GPU this gen. NVIDIA really knows how to screw their customers…with all that being said your work is very impressive! GLHF

    How is the sandwich layout affect cpu/motherboard temps since the hot air is blowing right through the gpu into them?
    Edit: asking because I’ll be building in the nanoq r with a 5090 FE. Unsure if it’ll be better to go with a AIO or air cooler for the cpu

    • @KBee129
      @KBee129 10 дней назад

      @@No_Skill42 I think go with air cooler cuz I can put 3 140mm fan and no rad obstruction in airflow.u can even put bigger CPU cooler too. I'm getting aio 5090 so depending on size I'm going axp 47 full copper or 53 on my 9800x3d with 3 140mm fan all on exhaust.i think nanoq will be able to handle it

  • @EuphoriaActual

    Wonder what a worst case sandwich style layout would look like temps wise, for all of GPU, CPU and mobo. Something like the Terra with space for only one exhaust on the bottom.

    Why 7200? You’re gonna be in a slower 2:1 mode that doesn’t net any advantage over 8000 at 2:1 or 6000 1:1 w/ the tightest possible timings.

    This thing puts out vver 500 watts on full load? That's hair dryer levels of consumption, and I would know all about hair dryers. NCLOWNIA doesn't seem to prioritize efficiency as much as marketing blurbs. The worries about frame generation used as a crutch instead of optimization are perfectly valid.
