I am going to drive 200 miles to get my car repaired by someone I trust because it is a crap shoot to use someone I don't know.

Attorney's cost money and they make things even more expensive and time consuming. I'd do that as a last resort or not at all. Small claims court is much less expensive. However, making a few calls to the state agencies who monitor mechanical shops like BUREAU OF CONSUMER & FACILITY SERVICES would be a good start but takes time. This customer just needs to get his Chevy fixed of the items the other shop was supposed to do correctly and then just deal with the paperwork and collections and complaints.
only if they charged them for a wheel bearing on the right front....other than the twisted brake hose, and the wrong bolt on the ball joint, the customer got brakes all around....BUT, to not see the failing bearing is inexcusable even if they put a new one in, the mechanic didn't see it was wobbly???
Eric, I've been watching you since forever and "11 wheel bearings" may be the most astonishing thing I've seen on this channel. I'm legitimately lost for words. Hope you get the job so this poor suffering car owner can get their vehicle fixed correctly. And FWIW I know you can't do it, but calling out the repair shop responsible for this needs to happen in some way, otherwise they'll just keep taking advantage of people
I have to agree with you. I know Eric is not the one to "name" other shops, but enough is enough. Some places need to be called out so they go out of business and stop ripping people off. Not to mention the fact that they are giving the rest of the automotive repair shops a bad name. I don't need to lose business because of someone else's inability. I work at a big airport and pointed out an oil leak to a pilot on his preflight walk around. He said, "good. The only time they don't leak is when they're empty."
The customer definitely needs to bring legal action against that other shop; 11 wheel bearings and $3,000 dollars spent is extremely excessive and the fact that they used random hardware for the lower ball joint pinch bolt instead of actually using the proper hardware is extremely shady.
What I don't understand is why was it even needed? You can buy all of those bolts and parts. You aren't paying for them out of pocket, it is going to be charged to the customer. I've worked semi professionally fixing stuff, but still kind of on the diy side, and it took a minute, but I learned, I am not paying for the parts, I don't need to be cheap. I don't raise the price of things, I just don't have to worry about buying an extra bolt or something small. When the customer is paying hundreds, $10 to $50 isn't what is going to hurt them, and in this case, would have saved them thousands probably.
There’s not enough damages to hire a lawyer so it would have to go to small claims court. But he should also contact the attorney general. I got screwed over by a shop in New York and the Attorney General came through for me big time.

Wow, I have heard of bad dealership work but this takes the cake. I have a wonderful mechanic near me in Danbury, CT with a shop called Autotech and he is the most honest man I have ever met. It helps I used to work on my own car myself so I can understand him when he gets technical, and I occasionally still do some work on my car myself (just replaced the battery recently on a 2013 Subaru Legacy with 147,000 miles on it which he checked over and said I did a good job - which is really not that hard to do).I appreciate this channel watching another wonderful mechanic who is honest and does the right thing.
Quit blaming the dealership. Always remember it's the so called Technicians that give shops a bad name. Technicians sling a fancy code reader and fire the Canon. To many people use the word "getting a diagnostic" , they think plugging in a code scanner will tell them ALL of the problems they are having and the magic part will fix everything. Plus It's no different than going to the Parts store and have a Parts Store technician plug in the code reader. And they will tell you a magic part will fix it problems. Mind you it's a 18 year old kid from your yokle high school. Or some other person who doesn't know nothing about vehicles.

I have saved four friends at work with this information because every time they go to a dealer (there are three of them in my area) they all have the same crap answer - replace the transmission. it is the wrong answer. I can give you more examples on more cars but you get the point. Some dealers may be fine, but many are not.

When this happens if the solenoid is replaced, it can last another 60K easy. However when four of my friends went to Subaru dealers (three different ones in the area in CT), they all said the transmission needed to be replaced which costs $6000. When they told me this, I told then not to sell the car but instead go to my independent mechanic who replaced the solenoid for less than $1000, saving them $5000 and the car. I have other examples of know how saving my friends but you get the point. There are more bad dealers out there than good (I am sure some are fine).

Probably wasn't. Either it was Cousin Pookie or a DIY job. Why would someone bring their car to the same place for ELEVEN wheel bearings? I've driven cars for 250K miles on their original factory bearings. I don't think we're getting the whole story here.
We had the same repair shop for 50 years until they closed and if there was an issue with a job they did they always went back and made it good. We never questioned the price if a repair solved an issue and they were always willing to discuss what the repair entailed and show us the replaced parts. Luckily there was another shop nearby that’s been in business 37 years and operates to the same standards so that’s where we go now. The moral is you have to talk with your mechanic and establish a relationship and if you can’t then you need to move on.
I can understand messing up a bearing on those if you haven't done one in a while, I'm certainly guilty of it since we see so few problems with those but holy crap the complete and utter incompetence to go through 11 wheel bearings, brakes and calipers messed up, all for it to leave the shop like that and still charging the guy 3gs? no wonder its hard to get customers to repair their vehicle instead of wasting money on a new car every few years. Also, quick tip for the oil coolers/filter housings on those 1.4s, you don't need to pull the turbo like the service information wants you to. once you've got the converter off, just unbolt and remove the coolant pipe from the housing and you can sneak it out past the turbo at the right angle. saves a ton of time and headache on the off chance the turbo hasnt failed yet!
its experiences like those, just hearing about them, that makes people get a bit silly when they see an honest shop like SMA; I'll almost bet you people have wanted to come from out of state for oil changes. I just started pushing myself to fix what I can more; and looking into older cars that can be taken car of with elbow grease and ingenuity. Find a good place, patron them well, be good to them, stop by and drop off cookies or something. Help them want to keep putting up with the struggle!
This is really one I hope we get to see!! It's really bad when the most of us here know there is so much that guy's been through. This is why I never leave a car. At your shop I would but that's because we've probably spent 100's of hours and years of being here so you are the exception and not the rule anymore unfortunately. Same. My 2016 made it to 210,000 km on the original bearings, rotors, and pads. At that point one front bearing went so i had both cv shafts and both bearings replaced. Super reliable. Only thing, the GM oil change meter trips over at like 10,000 km which is crazy. Mine is getting full synth at half that interval.
wild guess they "press" the new bearings in with a hammer. If there is a part 2 im sure we will get to see some witness marks from a hammer on the hub.

I feel like the owner could take the old shop to court at least small claims and see what he/she can get out of it. I would because 4 months and no proper repairs
My friend had a 2015 Trax -- I worked on it a few times. It was a piece of junk. That oil leak is extremely common. My friend spent a small fortune keeping that car on the road. The fallacy of sunk costs definitely applies to Trax ownership.
Eric, remember when you say you are just a regular mechanic nothing special, this is why people trust you. You do it right. These shoddy mechanics seem to be much more common than you think. I don't work for a shop anymore but I saw it all the time.
When I heard 11 wheel bearings I had a flash back to the old Plymouth Horizon's/Dodge Omni's. Ground strap would rust out and ground found a path using the L. F. wheel bearing. Wouldn't take long and bearing was shot.
@@SouthMainAuto It's the new tires these days. They are designed to carry an electrical current to the road surface. Now the road becomes the common ground for all vehicles, and the load is carried across the wheel bearings. You have never looked for voltage drop across the wheel bearings? 🤣
I Know. We did a lot of them. I think the ground strap was on the left side of car and they would rust out. It found ground somewhere and it happened to be that LF bearing. Wish me had a lawnmower guy.
Also had a driveability problem on a car one time that the problem was the wiring harness. Turns out they ran out of black wire at the factory so painted another wire with black spray paint. Over time it broke down and induced a voltage. Got that info back from the engineers when we sent the harness back because they didn't believe us that that fixed the car.
When you don't know anything about cars you wind up trusting the mechanic you bring it to. If you don't have the time to take a basic class in auto mechanics, then you are left with asking questions & having the mechanic show you what he is talking about. You can also Google a lot of repairs, or just type in your automotive issue in the RUclips search bar.
Eric, you haven't seen a 1.4T with that many miles on it? I have a 13 Cruze LTZ RS that's my daily, has been since November and it's sitting just under 222k miles and it runs and drives excellent. I've went ahead and fixed all the normal issues with these engines out of preventative maintenance and it's been excellent. I love the car. It's comfortable, always starts and has never let me down. Trans is still going strong too, shifts like butter. Has an oil leak from the timing cover but I change my oil every 3k miles and have never had to add any oil. I bought my wife a one owner 12 Cruze Eco and it has 184k miles and it's flawless. They are great cars if you just maintain them. costs me 25$ every 3k miles to change the oil with Supertech DEXOS and an OEM Delco filter. Cheap insurance.
I have a 2016 Trax just turning 100k. No problems. Except power window regulator. I bought it new. Done all of the maintenance myself. Runs great still.
That's the reason why I don't take my vehicle to a shop that's why I do it myself.It's hard to find a good person to trust anymore you're an honest person so I respect you for that.

this is why i am very cautious as to where i bring my vehicle, and am sure its why others are as well. sometimes it can be assumed what to fix, to fix the issue, but then there is testing to actually know what to fix. i dont get the feeling that all shops do good diagnostics, as can be seen by vehicles that come in from other shops because they couldnt figure it out, but then there are those that think that they can fix a vehicle, and then you see a job like this.

Issue with Leaving Honest Negative Feed- back is you better be an Atty. because Atty. of Company doing Crappy Bidnez will Threaten you to Remove Feedback or Else.
As a shop owner, this kind of thing requires crystal clear communication with the owner of the vehicle. I don't know whats broke, can not even drive the car at this point, so first step is to get the car mobile again and then go from there. Knuckle, wheelbearing, some hardware, possibly a driveshaft, wheel speed sensor...then the oil leak, the other wheel speed sensor codes, and who knows what else. Approached correctly, this should be straightforward.
We have guys come to our shop all the time that swear up and down they are fully restoring cars at home, and then turn out to be totally clueless. Recently had a guy who didn't know about or how to use grease zerks. No joke he pumped out a bit of grease, wiped it off on his finger, and wiped his finger on the side of a tie rod end. Good to see he found another shop near you to give him another shot lol

I'm convinced that when some of your customers say "the other shop" they are in fact referring to the garage attached to their home, or perhaps the parking out front at the trailer park.
I just did rear brakes on an Altima, less than a year old and wiped out. I don't know what Mr X did but I had a hell of a time getting them off, e-brake had worn into the rotor and stuck there 🤬 I got it straightened out and working properly but with an extra 90 minutes labor, that almost turned into an argument but they paid. Great channel, it's good to know I'm not alone 👍😎✌️
It’s crazy the difference in climate. I see several of my Favorite content creators wearing coats, hoodies, and flannels and even have frost on their windows. I’m in west Kansas and it is still reaching over 90 degrees, yesterday it actually got to 100.
I’d be checking the CV shafts are correct. I’ve seen incorrect ones fitted and they flogged out the bearings. Although this was a VW.. they went through a few bearings b4 double checking that the exchange shafts that were fitted were the same length as the original ones. Turned out they weren’t.
Eleven Wheel Bearings would be my first choice for a band name. But I'm wondering exactly how many wheel bearings you need to get replaced - in a 6 year period - before it finally dawns on you that the real problem is not getting fixed.
I try to do basic work myself, but I feel fortunate to have a reputable local shop for bigger jobs out of my league. This is just terrifying and dangerous.
There is a chance (albeit small, based on the quality of repairs from the other shop) it could be a missing/corroded/broken ground strap causing the repeated wheel bearing failures. This is a somewhat rare but documented issue on certain cars of history. Just a thought in case you don't find a smoking gun, or worse yet they bring it back in two months with another bad wheel bearing.
on those, 99% chance the knuckle/hub is bad from letting it go to long or they're just clowns that never cleaned, installed and torqued the bearings right to start with. but surely it's smoked now!
you can actually sneak the oil filter housing out on these without taking off the turbo. if you remove the little coolant nipple that is attached to the housing by that torx screw and you hold your tongue just right, it will slip out. Granted I've only done them on the encore and the cruze but I assume the trax has the same amount of room as the encore.
When they come in leaking that bad. Usually i have found its the turbo oil feed line. You just need to remove the heat shield to change. Its really easy and gives time for customers to save money for the oil cooler replacement. The cooler is probably leaking too though as they always do 🧐🤔
At that mileage it's probably the third engine at least 😅 We do plenty of those filter housings and cooler assemblies. They either leak like that one or push oil into the cooling system. The latter usually makes the customers freak out and they're glad when the repair is cheaper than they thought
Am an amateur DIY'er and even *I* know better than this!! Those rear brake hoses? WTF?! And **ELEVEN** wheel bearings?! Seriously?! I mean, I've gotten bad parts out of the box before, but never more than two in a row, and *CERTAINLY NOT ELEVEN* of them! What the hell?! That shop needs to be SHUT DOWN!

Seen a few out of round knuckles distort the bearing and eat them up. Maybe that happened before the butcher ate this one up? I agree on replacing the knuckle to be sure there's not a comeback.

Probably wasn't. Either it was Cousin Pookie or a DIY job. Why would someone bring their car to the same place for ELEVEN wheel bearings? I've driven cars for 250K miles on their original factory bearings. I don't think we're getting the whole story here.
@@MrSloika I haven't changed a wheel bearing in almost 50 years and that was on a 67 F100. Check them and add some lube.
We had the same repair shop for 50 years until they closed and if there was an issue with a job they did they always went back and made it good. We never questioned the price if a repair solved an issue and they were always willing to discuss what the repair entailed and show us the replaced parts. Luckily there was another shop nearby that’s been in business 37 years and operates to the same standards so that’s where we go now. The moral is you have to talk with your mechanic and establish a relationship and if you can’t then you need to move on.
I can understand messing up a bearing on those if you haven't done one in a while, I'm certainly guilty of it since we see so few problems with those but holy crap the complete and utter incompetence to go through 11 wheel bearings, brakes and calipers messed up, all for it to leave the shop like that and still charging the guy 3gs? no wonder its hard to get customers to repair their vehicle instead of wasting money on a new car every few years. Also, quick tip for the oil coolers/filter housings on those 1.4s, you don't need to pull the turbo like the service information wants you to. once you've got the converter off, just unbolt and remove the coolant pipe from the housing and you can sneak it out past the turbo at the right angle. saves a ton of time and headache on the off chance the turbo hasnt failed yet!

its experiences like those, just hearing about them, that makes people get a bit silly when they see an honest shop like SMA; I'll almost bet you people have wanted to come from out of state for oil changes.
I just started pushing myself to fix what I can more; and looking into older cars that can be taken car of with elbow grease and ingenuity.
Find a good place, patron them well, be good to them, stop by and drop off cookies or something. Help them want to keep putting up with the struggle!
This is really one I hope we get to see!! It's really bad when the most of us here know there is so much that guy's been through. This is why I never leave a car. At your shop I would but that's because we've probably spent 100's of hours and years of being here so you are the exception and not the rule anymore unfortunately. We have a 2016 Trax - rolled 145,000 miles last week. I hope Eric gets the repair job & keeps this thing on the road.
Same. My 2016 made it to 210,000 km on the original bearings, rotors, and pads. At that point one front bearing went so i had both cv shafts and both bearings replaced. Super reliable. Only thing, the GM oil change meter trips over at like 10,000 km which is crazy. Mine is getting full synth at half that interval.
Hoping for a part 2. That car needs some serious help. 11 wheel bearings? That's some crazy stuff right

wild guess they "press" the new bearings in with a hammer. If there is a part 2 im sure we will get to see some witness marks from a hammer on the hub.
Hopefully a few parts; one for the complete wheel bearing fix and another for the turbo oil leak.

My friend had a 2015 Trax -- I worked on it a few times. It was a piece of junk. That oil leak is extremely common. My friend spent a small fortune keeping that car on the road. The fallacy of sunk costs definitely applies to Trax ownership.
That brake hose curly-Q might be a strategy to try to keep this customer from coming back.

Eric, remember when you say you are just a regular mechanic nothing special, this is why people trust you. You do it right. These shoddy mechanics seem to be much more common than you think. I don't work for a shop anymore but I saw it all the time.
When I heard 11 wheel bearings I had a flash back to the old Plymouth Horizon's/Dodge Omni's. Ground strap would rust out and ground found a path using the L. F. wheel bearing. Wouldn't take long and bearing was shot.

@@SouthMainAuto It's the new tires these days. They are designed to carry an electrical current to the road surface. Now the road becomes the common ground for all vehicles, and the load is carried across the wheel bearings. You have never looked for voltage drop across the wheel bearings? 🤣
I Know. We did a lot of them. I think the ground strap was on the left side of car and they would rust out. It found ground somewhere and it happened to be that LF bearing. Wish me had a lawnmower guy.
Also had a driveability problem on a car one time that the problem was the wiring harness. Turns out they ran out of black wire at the factory so painted another wire with black spray paint. Over time it broke down and induced a voltage. Got that info back from the engineers when we sent the harness back because they didn't believe us that that fixed the car.
Just did the Google in case my old brain was playing tricks on me. Sure enough if it out on the Googles so it must be true LOL.

Either the "mechanic" is a relative, or the car owner is the most loyal customer in history, or he's like a fly on a windows screen trying to get out.
When you don't know anything about cars you wind up trusting the mechanic you bring it to. If you don't have the time to take a basic class in auto mechanics, then you are left with asking questions & having the mechanic show you what he is talking about. You can also Google a lot of repairs, or just type in your automotive issue in the RUclips search bar.
Eric, you haven't seen a 1.4T with that many miles on it? I have a 13 Cruze LTZ RS that's my daily, has been since November and it's sitting just under 222k miles and it runs and drives excellent. I've went ahead and fixed all the normal issues with these engines out of preventative maintenance and it's been excellent. I love the car. It's comfortable, always starts and has never let me down. Trans is still going strong too, shifts like butter. Has an oil leak from the timing cover but I change my oil every 3k miles and have never had to add any oil. I bought my wife a one owner 12 Cruze Eco and it has 184k miles and it's flawless. They are great cars if you just maintain them. costs me 25$ every 3k miles to change the oil with Supertech DEXOS and an OEM Delco filter. Cheap insurance.
I have a 2016 Trax just turning 100k. No problems. Except power window regulator. I bought it new. Done all of the maintenance myself. Runs great still.
I was a dealer tech for many years and whenever a customer says "another shop" you are not getting the whole story.

That's the reason why I don't take my vehicle to a shop that's why I do it myself.It's hard to find a good person to trust anymore you're an honest person so I respect you for that.

The fact that they just put in two random bolts to hold those lower balljoints, and the wheel bearing, I’m astonished that it didn’t fall apart going to your shop, an absolute hazard to the driver ,and other motorists on the road, looking forward to you digging into this one

this is why i am very cautious as to where i bring my vehicle, and am sure its why others are as well. sometimes it can be assumed what to fix, to fix the issue, but then there is testing to actually know what to fix. i dont get the feeling that all shops do good diagnostics, as can be seen by vehicles that come in from other shops because they couldnt figure it out, but then there are those that think that they can fix a vehicle, and then you see a job like this.

As a shop owner, this kind of thing requires crystal clear communication with the owner of the vehicle. I don't know whats broke, can not even drive the car at this point, so first step is to get the car mobile again and then go from there. Knuckle, wheelbearing, some hardware, possibly a driveshaft, wheel speed sensor...then the oil leak, the other wheel speed sensor codes, and who knows what else. Approached correctly, this should be straightforward.
I'm a shade tree hack and I can't believe how hacked that was.
We have guys come to our shop all the time that swear up and down they are fully restoring cars at home, and then turn out to be totally clueless.
Recently had a guy who didn't know about or how to use grease zerks. No joke he pumped out a bit of grease, wiped it off on his finger, and wiped his finger on the side of a tie rod end.
Good to see he found another shop near you to give him another shot lol

I'm convinced that when some of your customers say "the other shop" they are in fact referring to the garage attached to their home, or perhaps the parking out front at the trailer park.

I just did rear brakes on an Altima, less than a year old and wiped out. I don't know what Mr X did but I had a hell of a time getting them off, e-brake had worn into the rotor and stuck there 🤬
I got it straightened out and working properly but with an extra 90 minutes labor, that almost turned into an argument but they paid.

What's even scarier is that some folks are doing shoddy work like this in all walks of life.
It’s crazy the difference in climate. I see several of my Favorite content creators wearing coats, hoodies, and flannels and even have frost on their windows. I’m in west Kansas and it is still reaching over 90 degrees, yesterday it actually got to 100.
I’d be checking the CV shafts are correct. I’ve seen incorrect ones fitted and they flogged out the bearings. Although this was a VW.. they went through a few bearings b4 double checking that the exchange shafts that were fitted were the same length as the original ones. Turned out they weren’t.
Holy Carp... 😳 That previous shop needs to be reported and shut down ASAP.

Eleven Wheel Bearings would be my first choice for a band name. But I'm wondering exactly how many wheel bearings you need to get replaced - in a 6 year period - before it finally dawns on you that the real problem is not getting fixed.

I try to do basic work myself, but I feel fortunate to have a reputable local shop for bigger jobs out of my league. This is just terrifying and dangerous.
There is a chance (albeit small, based on the quality of repairs from the other shop) it could be a missing/corroded/broken ground strap causing the repeated wheel bearing failures. This is a somewhat rare but documented issue on certain cars of history. Just a thought in case you don't find a smoking gun, or worse yet they bring it back in two months with another bad wheel bearing.
on those, 99% chance the knuckle/hub is bad from letting it go to long or they're just clowns that never cleaned, installed and torqued the bearings right to start with.
but surely it's smoked now!
you can actually sneak the oil filter housing out on these without taking off the turbo. if you remove the little coolant nipple that is attached to the housing by that torx screw and you hold your tongue just right, it will slip out. Granted I've only done them on the encore and the cruze but I assume the trax has the same amount of room as the encore.

When they come in leaking that bad. Usually i have found its the turbo oil feed line. You just need to remove the heat shield to change. Its really easy and gives time for customers to save money for the oil cooler replacement. The cooler is probably leaking too though as they always do 🧐🤔

We do plenty of those filter housings and cooler assemblies. They either leak like that one or push oil into the cooling system. The latter usually makes the customers freak out and they're glad when the repair is cheaper than they thought
Am an amateur DIY'er and even *I* know better than this!! Those rear brake hoses? WTF?! And **ELEVEN** wheel bearings?! Seriously?! I mean, I've gotten bad parts out of the box before, but never more than two in a row, and *CERTAINLY NOT ELEVEN* of them! What the hell?! That shop needs to be SHUT DOWN!

Seen a few out of round knuckles distort the bearing and eat them up. Maybe that happened before the butcher ate this one up? I agree on replacing the knuckle to be sure there's not a comeback.
Turbos come out pretty easy on them which is good since they fail as often as the oil filter housing gasket!
