The design of the 10r80 trans cooler appears to be biased for faster warm up than cooling. It’s a trans fluid to engine coolant heat exchanger instead of oil to air cooler.

Thinner fluid would be my first guess. Thinner for max MPGs - not max longevity! That's the way things roll in the 21st century. Also looks much more sparkly than I have ever seen in any vehicle at that mileage. Back in the day we never serviced transmissions! Only when there was a problem a hundred thousand plus miles down the road, lol! I can recall seeing lots of clutch material in the bottom of the pan, but the fluid was (some of the time) as red as the day it went it. Still worked, though! My 2011 F350 6.7L I had it at the dealership several times for a very hard shift from 2nd to 3rd on occasions. They did a reflash several times and it would go away then it would start up again. I did the Fluid exhchange at 50K they highly recommended (At a very high price, out of warrenty). At 80 the Tranny Detonated so hard it blasted the case and cracked it all around. 7K later, I had a new transmission and ford said so sorry, wouldnt take ownership even though I had some service infomation. So with that being said I would recommend replace it with a heavy duty better manufactured transmission.

So being Retired I just fix when needed. Have replaced EGR, EGR Cooler, Injector harness misrouted on install, Tranny and Turbo. All except EGR Cooler were on my dime. Ford would not take ownership of any of it.
10R80’s are such a great example of cut corners. Rough shifts, clunks in gears, bad drums, horrible transmission tuning, whiny ass gears, a cheap plastic pan, all in the name of “fuel economy and efficiency”
They fixed 90% of those problems in 2022, except for the computer that learns driving habits. For instance, if you drive like a hellion for 500 miles, and all of a sudden start driving like grandma, the transmission will bang gears like you are taking off. Now this can be reset, but they should of never had that feature. My 10spd on my late model 22 is great.
@@learningthehardwaythat’s the thing with mine; you take off hard from the light like three times and now its banging into third and jumping into sixth.
Need a new CDF drum, a new anodized transfer shell, clear the adaptive learning for the transmission and also disable the adaptive learning. You can do that with the forscan program.
On the 10R80s Not only does the known CDF drum bushing spin causing various shifting issue, the clutch planetary cylinder we call the “trash can” bc of its obvious shape will also get deep groves in it from the F clutches and will cause F clutch application issues. Also seen E clutch seal(s) issues and A clutch snap ring become dislodged ( mainly seen in 10R60) - I am personally a 10R80 fan. I know I know all the guys at the shop give me crap about it too. - I have seen people put tuners on the 10Rs allowing the transmission to go through all the gears and no skip shifting and have better luck with the transmissions also * both the CDF and clutch planetary cylinder “trash can” have been redesigned with updated part numbers.
Flash point means that an oil gets hot enough to emit vapor that can be ignited with an external heat source. If the tranny fluid is reaching the flash point, the tranny is toast. The flash point of tranny fluid is 300 F to 380 F, depending on the ATF formulation. The brown color is from oxidation as the additives are used up with use. Nice plastic oil pan Ford.
I agree that for an unknown transmission drain and fill is safer than flushing. And filter change as well. Unless your trans is like the one in my Chevy Traverse that is only replaceable but dropping the trans and splitting the case.
Despite known issues with 10R80, I have 2017 F150 3.5 ecoboost with 76,000 miles, recent drain and fill preventive maintenance and have had no issues with transmission. This was one of first trannys off the production line. Some short towing with 11,000 lb trailer, and fair bit light duty tow less than 3000 lbs trailers.
My 10r80 would hang onto first gear and then it would kick into second very hard. It was like getting kicked in the back. Valve body and reflash solved that issue. Ford needs to issue an extended warranty on these transmissions because they can be so troublesome.
@@johnriley7053real ford 10r80s guy know😎. Tranny flush n filter wont do a thing until u fix cdf. Also there is a TSB for this concern as well. Research tsb 23-2123. New procedures for 21+ f-150s are a joke too. The cdfs ultimately junk. No doubt about it
I just had my Town and Country van serviced on Dec. 31,2024. It had 55,000 miles on it. Not serviced at 30,000 by previous owner. Had a gasket leak also. New trans filter installed. I can tell the difference so far is positive. The fluid wasn't very dirty. Now coolant will be flushed and changed soon. I read the manual for it. 60,000 miles/10 year or what comes first. I also will flush it by through the Trans coolant line when or if I do flush it next time. I understand the not to use the high-pressure flush by dealer. These types are great even for the person needs to know. Even if they can't do it themselves. It is resourceful.
Caden is definitely a sharp mechanic, and how did he know about color change due to temperature cycles of the ultra low viscosity transmission fluid, Technical Bulletins that’s how, the young man can and does read.
First and foremost I love your channel. You and your team are the best. And this owner spent how much on this Raptor. I guess it’s about ego. I will keep my daily driven beautiful 1998 Chevy Silverado Z71 (supposedly stock?and quiet)aka sleeper. I got less money into it compared to a new Rapter. I will pull the frame out from under this Raptor. Fix your own and not waste a $100 thousand dollars. We have alot of Raptors here sitting in used car lots.
LOL This a typical comment form someone who is broke and has no money for anything nice. People with money don't care about what a vehicles cost....They get rid of them after a few years anyway who wants to drive and old shit box Um none.....
Last two Ford expeditions I rented had shifting issues, sometimes complete loss of power for about 5 seconds. One had under 5000 miles and the other 7000. I almost lost control of it because I was on a steep hill with a curve, it was as of the vehicle paused itself. I won't rent another expedition and it's unfortunate because we liked the truck itself.
Transmission flushes scare the crap out of me i understand doing it to a truck around 30k miles but ive seen vehicle's have around 65 to 70k miles on them and get a flush then the tranny starts slipping. I always would just do a drain and fill but i would remove the pan and change the filter you definitely get more old fluid out that way too. But im by no means a professional mechanic more of a diy guy so im bot saying im right just going by what ive seen in my experience.
I like drain and fill too with a filter change. Especially when a lot of these trans now have “lifetime fluids”. A drain and fill should be more than sufficient including a new filter to filter contaminants
I had a mechanic friend tell me that if you add Lucas soon enough you can save a slipping trans. I had a P30 Fed Ex truck that I put 300k hard miles on and never had an issue with the trans. I added Lucas to the engine every month, too, and my only issues were the clutch fan, once and a few fuel pumps.
The flush is done with the same ATF that it normally runs. The fluid return line from the cooler goes into the waste oil drum until the colour changes to the fresh fluid. The return line is then reconnected to the transmission and it is topped up. They don't run a flushing fluid through it at all.
As long as the fluid doesn’t smell burnt, the fluid isn’t heavy on the glitter or have metal shaving then a fluid change is fine. I personally prefer drain and fill or fluid exchange (depends on the trans setup) if they are a decent amount of miles past the recommendation instead of a flush. The old recommendation of never flush/change old fluid is because there may be gunk or clutch material on the gears that is actually helping it shift and if it gets removed and you may end up showing an issue that wasn’t a problem yet. A perfect example would be a worn gear The gear may not slip yet because the built up material may help it grab the other gears more effectively. So if that is the case and it’s removed it appears as you broke their transmission when in reality it was damaged it just wasn’t showing the signs yet. New fluid is going to add the missing viscosity so further damage doesn’t occur and get the thermal stability back up so you’re not burning fluid off. The pressure from the flush could possibly remove or disturb the built up fluid. Also, I wouldn’t recommend never replacing your transmission filter. However, doing it each fluid change (especially on a low mileage recommendation where you’re changing the fluid 3-4 times by 100k miles) is overkill and comparing the trans filter to an engine oil filter is not accurate. The conditions the fluids are exposed to and filter design are completely different meaning there is not as much to be filtered out. I’d say every other change at the most is acceptable for the majority of transmissions.
I had a 2017 Ford F150 that the transmission would shift funky. Come to find out I had a miss fire. Miss fire was fixed. Transmission shifted good after that.
Just had my 2018 RDX transmission fluid changed at the dealer since it was there for a fuel pump recall, and it seemed to be shifting a little rough. It runs/shifts much better but now, I'm nervous reading all the comments here lol 😆
Low viscosity trans fluid, if the vehicle is new. Drop that fluid at 3,000 miles, & every 30,000 after. And make sure the place that does it actually DROPS the pan. As well as let's the vehicle idle for 20 minutes before driving it, this way the fluid can get through the entire system.
Spark plugs at under 70k is a little ambitious. Pretty sure those are 90k plugs unless they changed something. I got lazy and finally changed mine at 140k. Stupid big gap but still completed combustion with no misfire. Ever. Someone on here mentioned the commonplace occurrence of funky shift on these trans. I have the older 6-speed version and recently had to do the internal solenoid harness replacement TSB and had the dealer reflash for me. Couldn’t believe I didn’t have slipping problems after replacing 10 qts and the filter after 130k with zero trans flushes. People complain about technology in vehicles nowadays and how much “easier” things used to be to work on. Could very well be because you had to work them all the time so mechanics were very proficient. 😂
Needs a new transmission, then the trans adaptation needs reset. Way too many of these transmissions failing. We work on these all the time. Stupid 10 speeds, absolutely worthless having more than 6 speeds.
Ford ten speeds are well known for hard up or hard down shifts. Erratic not constant or consistent. The transmission cds drum up until late 22 is softer than the the clutches damaging the drum and increasing the frequency of hard changes
@YZJB Just because the same factory or company makes something doesn't mean everything is the same. The products can be built to different specefications and thereby different quality levels. P66 spec sheet says it is full synthetic while motorcraft ULV is semisynthetic so that right there shows it's not the same oil. Be neat to see an oil analysis of the two oils.
Great content, as always! Just a quick off-topic question: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). What's the best way to send them to Binance?
If it’s an automatic it starts red unless it’s cvt (majority of the time is amber), manual (majority take gear oil that is normally a light amber), or some redheaded step children if transmissions like ASMT’s or Dual clutch (majority of the time take low viscosity gear oil that is a light amber). Well, we also can’t forget the weird Toyota one that randomly changes to purple after 10k miles.
I had a raptor and mine did the same hard shifting. It was scary, felt like the tranny was about to come apart. I goosetuned it wit winfields tcm flash and it helped.
Do your maintenence they may say that fluid is good for such and such miles but the truth new fluids are getting thinner to meet emissions crap and it doesn't last as long plus use a good fluid like ams oil or other very trusted and proven fluid
So let me understand this…..A 2022 with 60k miles which is out of warranty. The dealer who are factory trained tech DIDN’T know what the codes meant??? The trans has never had a service at that mileage and they didn’t recommend the whole laundry list of miantanance??? Gotta love these dealers….

I've had the same car for 10 years. Never changed transmission fluid or spark plugs and it runs great. Why are all of these things needing to be done to an almost brand new truck?
I have a 10sp change the transmission fluid and filter at 20k the first time. Every 30-40 after that. In my experience the first change will be the darkest.
I have a transmission issue on my edge and this is the test drive i expect from a tech. Not even 2 minutes in the car and up and down the road when i need you to get the damn car warmed up and lots of suddens stops from 40-50 down to 0 as if a light turned red and then accelerate. Why is this such a hard thing to understand? Im sure this guy will continue having issues considering you only did a tranmission flush.
I have the same kind of issue. Mine feels like it’s stud in gear, almost like you left it in first in a manual transmission. It killed my engine when I came to a stop. 2024 f150 with same engine and tranny. No codes
Hey Dave I have a 2023 f150 with a 3.5L eco boost , I want to make it last for as long as I can , what maintenance schedule and upgrades do you recommend?

@@HANZELVANDERLAAY in Dec 2010 I paid new off the lot 29K. For the Exact same truck (XLT+ with chrome package and 4x4 off road) it would be 88,900.00 when I built it on the Ford Site.
NAILED IT 🎯
They fixed 90% of those problems in 2022, except for the computer that learns driving habits.
GM doesn't use a plastic pan
Better than the 6l80 and 8l90e transmissions
Need a new CDF drum, a new anodized transfer shell, clear the adaptive learning for the transmission and also disable the adaptive learning. You can do that with the forscan program.
What is the benefit of disabling adaptive learning?
@@roamwashington2230 Stop the shifting from jerking going into the next gear.
One thing good of a transmission fluid bath, is the long lasting smell...😁😁😁
I assume gen2 raptor has this transmission, where can I find the turner you are stating? The shift skip is dumb
@ I only have dealt with a few customers on this and I believe COBB tuning was used. ( customer I have in mind was a raptor owner also )
"Sometimes you just gotta be a chill guy" 😂 Alejandro is the man lol, Caden too!
Dave and Scotty Kilmer are the dad/grandad I never had. I've learned so much about diagnosing and working on cars from watching their videos.
Heard rumor of internal harness signal problems(big plastic/harness/unit) unit not fomoco available aftermarket only for now.
Happy New Year, Dave and the team!🍻
Happy new year! Thanks for watching🎉
My 10r80 would hang onto first gear and then it would kick into second very hard. It was like getting kicked in the back. Valve body and reflash solved that issue. Ford needs to issue an extended warranty on these transmissions because they can be so troublesome.
Cdf drum
Nailed it. Gonna happen to every last one >12/22 build date.

Happy New Year's Dave!
When the owner and shop foreman can walk away from operations to do this type of thing, you know things are going well and teamwork is solid.
Happy new year to you dave and everyone at daves auto!
Happy New Year, please keep up the fantastic work.
Caden should get a raise.
Gotta be a chill guy!!!!! 😎
Happy New Year to our American cousins 👍🏻👍🏻🇬🇧
Happy New Year from CT
Happy new year!!
Ford dealer replaced my 10r at 40k miles for same symptoms. No questions asked.
Dave you just seem like your a fun to be around all the time.
@@chrispy104k I know that. The problem is when you get rid of the old fluid you are getting rid of the particles that keep the clutches from slipping.
I had a 2017 Ford F150 that the transmission would shift funky. Come to find out I had a miss fire. Miss fire was fixed. Transmission shifted good after that.
Sometimes you have to be a chill guy and clean up!
I’ve worked at a handful of shops and USMC, I’d definitely work for Dave.
Just had my 2018 RDX transmission fluid changed at the dealer since it was there for a fuel pump recall, and it seemed to be shifting a little rough. It runs/shifts much better but now, I'm nervous reading all the comments here lol 😆
Hi Dave community Happy New Year everyone🎉
From South Africa.😊
Happy New Year to you! 👋
Would have loved to have seen a confirm drive to see if the problem was resolved. Condition cause correction confirm.
Appreciate the feedback 👍
Get a pair of old socks cut 6 inches off and make wrist bands then the oil will not run down your arm.
Then you have to walk around with old socks on your arms😂 Get a head band to match
Ecoboost is hard on plugs. Manufacture recommended interval is ridiculous.

Does the condition happen in all drive modes?
Wish I could replace the filter on my Ford, but with the 8F35 you have to pull the transmission and split the case to get to the internal filter.
С тем что описал Дэйв надо было снимать гидравлический блок ( блок мозгов) коробки передач и смотреть его. Проблема скорее всего в нём.
I had my transmission flush twice before changing the filter at 180,000 miles.

Been there, done that.... 😢
Hi ! Thanks for your videos !
Happy new year !
Hello from France .
Hello there!
These 10 speeds perform much better if you have all of the OEM fluid changed ASAP and replace it with full synthetic. It helps tremendously
What do you think of Phillips 66 ULV?
@@machine7767that will be the same fluid as Motorcraft. P66 makes Motorcraft oils and fluids.
Did you check the throttle position sensor? I always check the TPS on any shifting issue.
Need to add some work lights on stands to light up the underside of vehicles when working on them?
You blurred out licenses place in the oarking lot but showed it on the lift in shop 😄
I just learned something new about tranny fluid I always thought it was red until now thanks for all the info you are passing on
its still red .hand
@@David-q4h5r it's still red
If it’s an automatic it starts red unless it’s cvt (majority of the time is amber), manual (majority take gear oil that is normally a light amber), or some redheaded step children if transmissions like ASMT’s or Dual clutch (majority of the time take low viscosity gear oil that is a light amber). Well, we also can’t forget the weird Toyota one that randomly changes to purple after 10k miles.
I had a raptor and mine did the same hard shifting. It was scary, felt like the tranny was about to come apart. I goosetuned it wit winfields tcm flash and it helped.
Happy new year great team
Happy new year
So, when they cranked the engine while oil was running out, what was that?? Were they constantly feeding oil in to flush everything?
From a consistency standpoint, why was the license plate blurred in one shot, but in none of the rest? Seemed odd to me.
Like the videos, Thanks!
Isn't that truck new enough to be under powertrain warranty?
Ford only covers to 60k
@@tennispro602 That's a decent amount of miles for a 2022 if this truck is out of warranty.
This thing is going to be around for a good time not a long time..!

Hi Dave,
Do you worry about flushing material into other parts of the transmission by performing a flush? I've just seen this be very debatable online
Hello my name is Jeremy I wanted to tell you I follow your channel and I wish I had the courage to do what you have done I really enjoy watching your videos and I have learned a lot from you so thank you and have a happy new year
Thanks for the kind words, Jeremy! I appreciate you watching.
Happy New Year everyone.
I've had the same car for 10 years. Never changed transmission fluid or spark plugs and it runs great. Why are all of these things needing to be done to an almost brand new truck?
Because they are built to fail
That Jeep is nice!
The Ecoboost vehicles been recalled
I have the same kind of issue. Mine feels like it’s stud in gear, almost like you left it in first in a manual transmission. It killed my engine when I came to a stop. 2024 f150 with same engine and tranny. No codes
The flash point of ford trans fluid is around 365 degrees.
Hey Dave I have a 2023 f150 with a 3.5L eco boost , I want to make it last for as long as I can , what maintenance schedule and upgrades do you recommend?
also is there an after market transmission pan that has a drain port for easier servicing?
Would love to see your monthly statement from Worldpac. Bet you guys spend a ton there lol. We love their OEM parts stock
Hmmm would adding ford friction modifier help?
Our 2020+ F450's at my work have terrible shifting transmissions. Multiple speed transmissions, nowhere near fluid changing, and yet they act like they're trying to force into gear when shifting up. It's absolutely terrible.
Both Chevy and Ford are having issues with the 10 speeds.
Looks more like bushing wear. That color is bushings. The gold color
We going to see a part 2? No follow up drive after the work. Did it help or not
