VW Golf Mk1 fights a Honda Civic Vtec to the line!

What a weekend racing my VW Golf Mk1 2.0 8v in 111 Sports & Saloons during the Winter Challenge at Zwartkops Raceway! After breaking the gearbox mount off the car on Friday during practice, my VW Golf Mk1's intake broke off completely in free practice 4. I missed qualifying on Friday afternoon thanks to it, and had to start at the back of class, 25th on the grid, for Race 1 early on Saturday morning.
Thanks to Tony James Sharp for welding my intake and gearbox mount back together, and for Keagan Pottas for joining me at the track early on Saturday to fit everything before Race 1! 💪
I wanted to try a set of second-hand full slick tyres this weekend. I struggled with the front of the car washing out into corners severely with them in practice on Friday, but decided to pump up the rear tyres more and do Race 1 with them. They didn't work and my lap times were substantially slower than what I do on semi-slicks. Due to an unfortunate accident between two Class B cars, and some retirements, I still managed to finish 3rd in Class B for Race 1! 😃
Race 2 saw me back on semi slicks - 3x 195s and 1x 205 as I didn't have 4x 195s to run. 😅
I started in 15th place on the grid, behind Louis Scholtz in his Honda Civic VTEC. The race started off without much issue and I was off chasing the Car Care Clinic Service Centre Honda, but thanks to some faster cars starting behind me, I lost some ground when they came past. Once they were past though, I had just over 4 laps of proper racing with the Honda. We had one or two very close calls, but luckily we never touched. Good, clean racing if there ever was - Thanks Louis! I managed to pip the Honda on the last lap and beat him by 1 second to the finish line, placing second in Class B for Race 2!
Overall, I finished 3rd in Class B for the day behind the two Honda Vtecs of Louis Scholtz and Veritie-Anne Joubert.
