Boy did this ever make me homesick. I used to live on the river between Goldbar and Index. Happiest time of my life. Taking the snow train to Leavenworth was a yearly treat
While My memories of that area only go back to the mid-'70s. I can recall the huge power station, left from when the line was electrified over the pass to Wenatchee. And the three engine helper units idling away while waiting to boost the next eastbound over the pass, listening to the engine crews killing time over coffee in the Skykomish hotel. I hopped a few freights over to Wenatchee and back (and longer) just for the fun of it. This video reminds me of the massive snowfall in1910 that caused the Wellington avalanche
My wife came by as I was watching this fabulous video. She watched for a few minutes and said, "Are they nuts?" I get that some people may consider our hobby, and the lengths we go to enjoy it, to be a little outside the norm. OUTSIDE being the operative word here. Well done! The sacrifice of your comfort for the enjoyment of many is much appreciated! The Washington Travel Bureau wasn't out, but you more than made up for it!
As a kid I worked as a Gandydancer (track laborer)and fire and slide patrolman for the great Northern Railway in the 1960s. It was wonderful to hear the references to East switch Skykomish or west switch scenic. It took me back to those places and those times. I loved the railroad and being around The trains and the equipment and the hard-working men.
I work for Hallcon here in Wenatchee WA I run a lot of crews to Skykomish I'm going tell right now the BNSF East pool out of Everett has the most coolest crews that run the science Sub.
Watching the VRF Livecam from there. Thanks for showing what it looks like in and around Skykomish, during the power outages. Good that there was hot coffee in Index. 😊
This little town never ceases to amaze on the vast difference between summer and winter. Beautifully green in July, and buried in several FEET of snow by January.
As a railway employee in Australia I really enjoy watching US trains and these extremely high quality productions. The weather conditions there are atrocious to work in obviously but it does make for great viewing. Edit: watching those 3 BNSF locos run past reminded me of that movie “Runaway Train” with Jon Voigt and Eric Roberts 🤓
I watched a lot of this unfold live on the Virtual Railfan cam in Skykomish. I'm glad this snow event was documented, and I found myself thinking back to the winter of 1910 when the two trains were trapped for six days up at the top of the old Stevens Pass high line, as in the Wellington Avalanche.
A great video, so interesting, and I loved the snow. I guess because I watched here in far south semi-tropical Texas! Thanks so much for your very interesting video.
Really cool. Love those trains. About 30 years ago I was skiing at Sugar Bowl mtn in Lake Tahoe and the gondola took you right over the train tracks. I was lucky enough to be on the gondola right as one of those trains with the huge snow blower in front went right underneath us. So amazing. I wish I had a phone way back then.
I and my then young family lived in Baring on the siding across State Route 2 from the Baring Store in the late 80's. My kids went to school in Skykomish. I organized a model train exhibition during the annual Skykomish Celebration I can't remember the name of the event in 1988 I believe. Beautiful area. Got to see The Portland Rose up close and personal.
I am a regular visitor to Virtual Railfan's Railcam in Skykomish. It's affixed to the Cascadia Inn there. I went to the site on RUclips several times a day during the heavy snows of January 2022 to follow the drama taking place in that beautiful little town. This excellent video considerably amplifies and adds context to what we all saw happening in Skykomish. Very well done, 7idea Productions!
We had heavy snow even in lowlands around end of December 2021 and beginning of 2022. Was coming back west through Sky from a cabin stay on December 30 2021 and it was all white. Afterwards spent a lot of hours watching the mentioned skycam. It was memorable 👍
I should note that the movie Harry and the Henderson's had segments filmed there at the old Quonset hut near the turn off to Index and around Index. I had to wait in traffic while they were filming a segment. Actors Don Ameche and John Lithgow were there. That was about a Sasquatch " Harry" and the family the Henderson. Great family movie.
Love your channel ! It's great that instead of just setting up a camera and showing train after train, you actually comment on what is going on. Thank you!
Wow, a real life drama, wrapped in a beautiful setting. Fabulous catch, and immortal efforts! Between all the laughs and smirks, you were at several risks, along with all them poor folk, stuck up there. It may not seem as intense as a hurricane, or as devastating as a forest fire, still, aunt Mara does not have mercy on those, who take her appearance lightly. It may not be heroic, but surely was daredevil, to get all that footage.
At 11 min in there is a mention of the switch heaters not working due to power outages. For anyone that has ever traveled on the Eastern corridors you will often notice the track are on fire, that is a safety measure that is common so they do not have to count on the switches working. The rail lines will often go out and set fire to the rails and areas close by to keep the switches clear of ice and snow. It is far cheaper to replace a burned tie than to hold an entire freight
I’m sitting here in Texas and the temperature is already 100 degrees and it’s not yet noon (we are supposed to set a 9th record high for August today), and it hasn’t rained in maybe 7 weeks. What a great video to watch and dream of cooler weather to come! The snow is beautiful. Thanks! 😊
Fun fact about the live steam railroad in Skykomish known as Great Northern and Cascade Railway, I visit there every often and I volunteer in driving the trains too!! 😁 Such beautiful winter scenery!! ❄️
Have purchased most of your videos and continue to do so as I consider them the best available. It’s great to see you on U-tube. Your voice and narration to me are the voice of American railroads. All the very best Arron to you, your wife and the team. Stay safe and well. Mick. 🇬🇧
Much of the town of Skykomish was lifted up and the soil under it removed and replaced, it was contaminated with Diesel and Bunker C fuel oil from spills and leaking tanks when Skykomish was a fueling station and maintenance facility for 80 years. When I had left the project they had recovered just over 130,000 gal of fuel so far, 38,000 gal of Bunker C fuel recovered was clean enough that it was tanked and hauled down to Everett and burned in the boilers at Kimberly Clark paper mill. It cost BNSF roughly 100 million in cleanup and they have to continue constant monitoring
THAT suppose - no one - remembers or likes to hear. Wonder if the commentator, an excellent vice by the way, actually knows details like that? or does he have to read from a script that was -prepared - for him?and for you GREG H - chapeau-!
As always, THANK YOU for your AWESOME professional videography combined with your professional quality voice narration. You must either be in radio or television production with that type of excellent voice. Skykomish is one of the very few places I consider as wonderful and day dream often about returning to for a visit. Lotsnof history here. I beleive it was where GN electrification started before going thru the Cascade Tunnel west of there.
Thank you for your kind words. Got into radio in the early 90's. When I started making videos I did the narration as well since it is a lot cheaper than hiring "professional" voice talent. Yes lots of history from Skykomish to the old and new Cascade Tunnel. The tragic Wellington Avalanche of 1910 wiped two trains off the mountain.
Growing up around OR/WA, I always figured the Cascades were pretty mild for weather treachery compared to the big scary Rockies of Montana. Now that I'm a regional truck driver in this area, I can say I'll take Montana almost every time. There are a lot of routes between Seattle and Yakima, and all of them get GNARLY snow. Montana may be colder, but the Cascades are cold enough to turn the water crispy, and they get SO MUCH more water. I just looked it up as a sanity check - Snoqualmie Pass gets slighly less snowfall than DONNER, but Stevens Pass actually bears Donner on average. Good Lord. By the way, little-known fact. Snoqualmie Pass is named for an old Native American word meaning "tire chains required".
If not for getting stranded on the Amtrak train it must be something to be riding along in a snowstorm. As dangerous as it is while driving my tractor trailer in the snow I never really had a problem while on the interstates until the last ten years where the people in cars congesting the highways really took the enjoyment out of it. All you need to do is to slow down and enjoy the ride
Its so cool that you offer such long "previews" for the products you sell. Its cool to know that with so much content that you share that there is so much more when purchasing the entire program. Going to have to give my family bsone ideas for Christmas. And, excellent video and narration work. I would place your work on par with the great Danny Harmon!
Can you imagine working outside in that type of cold? I knew a freshman engineer who got paid senior engineer pay as long as he stayed in Buffalo New York.
I've driven by Snohomish many dozens of times so this was very interesting. Would love to take a train trip over Stevens Pass one of these days. Did everyone notice the deer in the background at 15:55? Looks like he's wondering what all the fuss is about!
I also noticed. In fact, I thought that's what he was referring to when he said that the only ones being allowed on the road were emergency and railroad personnel and "others that needed to be there" something like that.
That snow was particularly wet and heavy. After I left town I didn't get out of the snow until I reached Carnation... and the radio traffic on the road channel was as exceptionally heavy as the snow...
Dankeschön Für den sehr guten Beitrag. Einer besten railroad Video 📽📽📽📽📽 welcher bundes stats der USA ist das aufgenommen geworden?Greetings from Germany Rhein side Düsseldorf
Beautiful scenery, trains, drama without dramatization. Probably a few other reasons. I totally agree though that is was very interesting. We go over the pass several times a year and yes… always at Chrismas ( it was closed this year as were a few other passes… took a long time to get home…)
I love trains but I think that my lady friend holds back on her favorite interests in deference to my hobbies, I wish she'd tell me about herself too......
Life is tougher in snow, but not impossible
Absolutely love the glow of the headlights against the nighttime snow. Just a wonderful and magical cozy feeling!
What a beautiful and cozy place. You can feel Christmas there.
Boy did this ever make me homesick. I used to live on the river between Goldbar and Index. Happiest time of my life. Taking the snow train to Leavenworth was a yearly treat

I know at times my wife thinks I am nuts too. That being said, I love the challenge of shooting in poor weather conditions.
You are not alone 😊
I'd have to say a lot of us ARE nuts...........myself included.
The snow is great fun. You just need to be dressed in layers and have good boots.
Funny my wife actually likes when I watch train videos and encourages to watch them because it mellows me. good stuff 👍
Oh wow, just freaking wow, this may be the best train video ever! EVER! And I have seen some dang good train videos.
I'm originally from Seattle, so this is so awesome. Thank you!!

Very very excellent. Enjoyed it tremendously. This is one I will have to purchase for my collection. Thank you very much. Once again … EXCELLENT

Many memories of Sky.
Simply great video 👍👍👍
Outstanding footage and equally great narration and editing.
Always fun going over Steven's pass in the winter love going bye the tunnel portal on the east side and listening to the tunnel exhaust fans running
Yes indeed. The old show sheds near Wellington too.
As a railway employee in Australia I really enjoy watching US trains and these extremely high quality productions. The weather conditions there are atrocious to work in obviously but it does make for great viewing.

Love those night trains😍
Spectacular footage! Enjoyed the narration too!

Very interesting! Thanks for posting.
Outstanding content. Trains and snow go together like peanut butter and jelly ⭐️
Indeed
Yah man
Nice! I love watching trains in the snow. I'll have to check out the DVD.
Thanks for a great video.
A great video, so interesting, and I loved the snow. I guess because I watched here in far south semi-tropical Texas! Thanks so much for your very interesting video.
Great video, and great narrative, and camera work.
Great video. Thanks for making and sharing.
This is an interesting, and first-rate video. I got frostbite just from watching it.
Really cool. Love those trains. About 30 years ago I was skiing at Sugar Bowl mtn in Lake Tahoe and the gondola took you right over the train tracks. Beautiful footage (especially at the last part of this video in the evening snow). And you have a great narration voice! Thanks for posting.
Cool very nice I'd love to be in that snow instead of this heat here awesome snow scenes keep up the good work
Amazing winter video! Lovely images with trains in snow and awesome landscapes! Good work! Thumbs Up
All the best from Dublin
Andrew
Awesome video! Thank you for this amazing production!
Professional creativity by 7idea Productions thanks for fantastic railfan content!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching.
OMG that weather is horrible but trains look so cool going through it!!!
I and my then young family lived in Baring on the siding across State Route 2 from the Baring Store in the late 80's. My kids went to school in Skykomish. In snow and in cold, set up a tripod and operate the cam and zoom and pan for the passing train…. Respect for that skill. 凄いです🙇
And trying to pull focus when all you see is snow.
Super video! Thanks!
Love your channel !

I wanted to capture trains in the snow and got a little more than I was expecting. Glad to have made it there and back safely.
Would love to hear the origins of “aunt Mara”
An absolutely gorgeous place. Especially in the winter
Great video!! Thank you for the post!!
Thanks for stopping by!
Ah, the winter of 2021/22. Skykomish isn't a good place to be in the winter... Great video, as always!
:) Great share and Video! THANKS MUCH for showing our back yard ! ! ALL the BEST and Cheers! :)
EPIC Video! That's has to be very eerie with the only power in town with BNSF!
I ❤ the Christmas Tree In 🎄 The Beginning, Thanks 😊

Wow great video
I saw a caboose go by. An echo of history.
Obviously, it must be for the train crews, on a train doing much needed maintenance work.

It also was a notable environmental superfund cleanup location.....
It cost millions.....
Jan, 2020 filmed. Snow is prettier than drab, depressing rain which falls a lot here.
Very nice
