- Trains battle heavy snow at Skykomish, Washington on the west side of Stevens Pass. Amtrak's Empire Builder limps into town after being stranded for several hours by a winter storm. Our film crew narrowly escapes a falling tree.
These scenes are from our DVD "Winter on Stevens Pass" which is available on DVD, Blu-ray and in 4K with Vimeo on Demand.

Boy did this ever make me homesick. I used to live on the river between Goldbar and Index. Happiest time of my life. Taking the snow train to Leavenworth was a yearly treat
While My memories of that area only go back to the mid-'70s. I can recall the huge power station, left from when the line was electrified over the pass to Wenatchee. And the three engine helper units idling away while waiting to boost the next eastbound over the pass, listening to the engine crews killing time over coffee in the Skykomish hotel. I hopped a few freights over to Wenatchee and back (and longer) just for the fun of it. This video reminds me of the massive snowfall in1910 that caused the Wellington avalanche

My wife came by as I was watching this fabulous video. She watched for a few minutes and said, "Are they nuts?" I get that some people may consider our hobby, and the lengths we go to enjoy it, to be a little outside the norm. OUTSIDE being the operative word here. Well done! The sacrifice of your comfort for the enjoyment of many is much appreciated! The Washington Travel Bureau wasn't out, but you more than made up for it!
I know at times my wife thinks I am nuts too. That being said, I love the challenge of shooting in poor weather conditions.
You are not alone 😊
I'd have to say a lot of us ARE nuts...........myself included.
The snow is great fun. You just need to be dressed in layers and have good boots.
Funny my wife actually likes when I watch train videos and encourages to watch them because it mellows me. good stuff 👍
Absolutely love the glow of the headlights against the nighttime snow. Just a wonderful and magical cozy feeling!
I work for Hallcon here in Wenatchee WA I run a lot of crews to Skykomish I'm going tell right now the BNSF East pool out of Everett has the most coolest crews that run the science Sub.
سلام من آرزوم هست اینجاکاربکنم وخدمت کنم
As a kid I worked as a Gandydancer (track laborer)and fire and slide patrolman for the great Northern Railway in the 1960s. It was wonderful to hear the references to East switch Skykomish or west switch scenic. It took me back to those places and those times. I loved the railroad and being around The trains and the equipment and the hard-working men.
What a beautiful and cozy place. You can feel Christmas there.
As a railway employee in Australia I really enjoy watching US trains and these extremely high quality productions. The weather conditions there are atrocious to work in obviously but it does make for great viewing.
Edit: watching those 3 BNSF locos run past reminded me of that movie “Runaway Train” with Jon Voigt and Eric Roberts 🤓
AWESOME video with great content and commentary from this part of the Country, Thanks very much for sharing we really enjoyed watching.
Always fun going over Steven's pass in the winter love going bye the tunnel portal on the east side and listening to the tunnel exhaust fans running
Yes indeed. The old show sheds near Wellington too.
I watched a lot of this unfold live on the Virtual Railfan cam in Skykomish. I'm glad this snow event was documented, and I found myself thinking back to the winter of 1910 when the two trains were trapped for six days up at the top of the old Stevens Pass high line, as in the Wellington Avalanche.
Great video!! Thank you for the post!!
Thanks for stopping by!
This is so beautiful
Many memories of Sky.
I and my then young family lived in Baring on the siding across State Route 2 from the Baring Store in the late 80's. My kids went to school in Skykomish. I organized a model train exhibition during the annual Skykomish Celebration I can't remember the name of the event in 1988 I believe. Beautiful area. Got to see The Portland Rose up close and personal.
I should note that the movie Harry and the Henderson's had segments filmed there at the old Quonset hut near the turn off to Index and around Index. I had to wait in traffic while they were filming a segment. Actors Don Ameche and John Lithgow were there. That was about a Sasquatch " Harry" and the family the Henderson. Great family movie.
Outstanding content. Trains and snow go together like peanut butter and jelly ⭐️
Indeed
Yah man
Oh wow, just freaking wow, this may be the best train video ever! EVER! And I have seen some dang good train videos.
Really cool. Love those trains. About 30 years ago I was skiing at Sugar Bowl mtn in Lake Tahoe and the gondola took you right over the train tracks. I was lucky enough to be on the gondola right as one of those trains with the huge snow blower in front went right underneath us. So amazing. I wish I had a phone way back then.
I'm originally from Seattle, so this is so awesome. Thank you!!
Very very excellent. Enjoyed it tremendously. This is one I will have to purchase for my collection. Thank you very much. Once again … EXCELLENT
Super video! Thanks!
Growing up around OR/WA, I always figured the Cascades were pretty mild for weather treachery compared to the big scary Rockies of Montana. Now that I'm a regional truck driver in this area, I can say I'll take Montana almost every time. There are a lot of routes between Seattle and Yakima, and all of them get GNARLY snow. Montana may be colder, but the Cascades are cold enough to turn the water crispy, and they get SO MUCH more water. I just looked it up as a sanity check - Snoqualmie Pass gets slighly less snowfall than DONNER, but Stevens Pass actually bears Donner on average. Good Lord.
By the way, little-known fact. Snoqualmie Pass is named for an old Native American word meaning "tire chains required".
Very interesting! Thanks for posting.
At 11 min in there is a mention of the switch heaters not working due to power outages. For anyone that has ever traveled on the Eastern corridors you will often notice the track are on fire, that is a safety measure that is common so they do not have to count on the switches working. The rail lines will often go out and set fire to the rails and areas close by to keep the switches clear of ice and snow. It is far cheaper to replace a burned tie than to hold an entire freight
OMG that weather is horrible but trains look so cool going through it!!!
That crew shuttle is one heck of a ride to work......
In snow and in cold, set up a tripod and operate the cam and zoom and pan for the passing train…. Respect for that skill. 凄いです🙇
And trying to pull focus when all you see is snow.
Nice! I love watching trains in the snow. I'll have to check out the DVD.
Thanks for a great video.
Trains have a Special place in my Heart and Nobody will ever get the Key.......❤❤❤❤❤❤
Super video ..... greetings from Poland
I’m sitting here in Texas and the temperature is already 100 degrees and it’s not yet noon (we are supposed to set a 9th record high for August today), and it hasn’t rained in maybe 7 weeks. What a great video to watch and dream of cooler weather to come! The snow is beautiful. Thanks! 😊
Glad we could help cool you down!
Wow, a real life drama, wrapped in a beautiful setting. Fabulous catch, and immortal efforts! Between all the laughs and smirks, you were at several risks, along with all them poor folk, stuck up there. It may not seem as intense as a hurricane, or as devastating as a forest fire, still, aunt Mara does not have mercy on those, who take her appearance lightly. It may not be heroic, but surely was daredevil, to get all that footage.
I wanted to capture trains in the snow and got a little more than I was expecting. Glad to have made it there and back safely.
Would love to hear the origins of “aunt Mara”
Great video, and great narrative, and camera work.
Love your channel !
It's great that instead of just setting up a camera and showing train after train, you actually comment on what is going on. Thank you!
Thank you for watching! I am glad you are enjoying the programs!
That is absolutely a top quality production, loved it. Thank you.
Thank you very much!
Cool very nice I'd love to be in that snow instead of this heat here awesome snow scenes keep up the good work
Ah, the winter of 2021/22. Skykomish isn't a good place to be in the winter... Great video, as always!
Life is tougher in snow, but not impossible
Great Scenery Thanks 😊
I saw a caboose go by. An echo of history.
Obviously, it must be for the train crews, on a train doing much needed maintenance work.
Spectacular footage! Enjoyed the narration too!
The best congratulations !
Thank you!
Amazing video
7:40 Ein wunderschönes Video toll gemacht weiterhin good Lucky Train greetings from Germany Cologne
Have purchased most of your videos and continue to do so as I consider them the best available. It’s great to see you on U-tube. Your voice and narration to me are the voice of American railroads. All the very best Arron to you, your wife and the team. Stay safe and well. Mick. 🇬🇧
Thanks Mick. I really appreciate your kind words.
Whoa cool!
EPIC Video! That's has to be very eerie with the only power in town with BNSF!
This is wonderful I am going to subscribe. Thank you.
Thank you for watching!
OUTSTANDING!!!!!
Great video.
I like the narration.
i just get the Notif, right now.
Fantastic thanks
Its so cool that you offer such long "previews" for the products you sell. Its cool to know that with so much content that you share that there is so much more when purchasing the entire program. Going to have to give my family bsone ideas for Christmas. And, excellent video and narration work. I would place your work on par with the great Danny Harmon!
Don't get me wrong, l love interior Washington, and continue to do so, tho I live in Florida.
Just Beautiful 😊
I've driven by Snohomish many dozens of times so this was very interesting. Would love to take a train trip over Stevens Pass one of these days.
Did everyone notice the deer in the background at 15:55? Looks like he's wondering what all the fuss is about!
I think you mean Skykomish...Snohomish is a town further west.
I saw the deer.
Love the deer! Thanks for pointing him out!
I also noticed. In fact, I thought that's what he was referring to when he said that the only ones being allowed on the road were emergency and railroad personnel and "others that needed to be there" something like that.
Rotary snow plows are so much more interesting to watch.
STAY SAFE 🙏🏻♥
Awesome video!!
Thank you!
Nice videos narrator has good voice to one's attention interest glad I stumbled a crossed it.
Thanks for stumbling!
Why was this so darn interesting?
Beautiful scenery, trains, drama without dramatization. Probably a few other reasons. I totally agree though that is was very interesting. We go over the pass several times a year and yes… always at Chrismas ( it was closed this year as were a few other passes… took a long time to get home…)
That snow was particularly wet and heavy. After I left town I didn't get out of the snow until I reached Carnation... and the radio traffic on the road channel was as exceptionally heavy as the snow...
I wonder if the town is interested in having the Great Northern diesel put on display
:) Great share and Video! THANKS MUCH for showing our back yard ! ! ALL the BEST and Cheers! :)
I have to admit this is the best channel for RR information. The narration is perfect! I find myself trying to locate the areas you're talking about. I live in M.N. and I am not familiar with these areas. I then pause the video and try to find any maps that you're talking about. I don't know how difficult it would be when you are editing, but if you could do an overlay, a simple map of the area that would be much appreciated. Great work and thanks for what do.
Thank you for taking time to comment! I appreciate your kind words too. Most of these videos are taken from full length programs on DVD that do include maps. I might want to address that in the future so good suggestion!
very nice thank you
I love trains but I think that my lady friend holds back on her favorite interests in deference to my hobbies, I wish she'd tell me about herself too......
More like Snohomish now hehe
Thank you for posting this, always wanted to see Skykomish snow trains in action. Thank you
You're welcome!

Wow great video
My grandparents spent a winter at Merit 1909 or 1910 he was a telegrapher there.
An ace having problems. Who would have guessed!
I have to applaud you for amazing footage and for the background information too. I have one request, do you think it's possible to film some of these beautiful trains, as they pass the camera(s) , from a little higher? perhaps on scaffolding? Possibly not too safe but from a perspective, that would be awesome. Thank you for efforts, just brilliant!
Thank you. Yes always good to get different perspectives. I don't know about hauling a scaffolding around with me as I do a lot of hiking, but drones are fantastic if you don't have a bump to work with.
Ooouuufff, now thats a storm . Getting stuck on the Amtrack for 4 hours cant be fun . Loved that caboose- why dont railroads upkeep their cabooses. Every railway their cabooses go to hell
Jan, 2020 filmed. Snow is prettier than drab, depressing rain which falls a lot here.
WHAT’S WITH ALL THE DAMN ADS?
I wonder if they put kerosene in the diesel fuel to stop it from gelling up.Because it so cold
Sorry, no trains have ever nor will ever pass over Stevens Pass. All trains pass under Stevens Pass through the Cascade Tunnel. Please get your facts straight.
Good grief !! Can it snow any harder than out west where these American Heroes ride the rails ??
Good stuff all the way. Thanks from MAINE
The railroad and the steam locomotive United this country in a way that cannot be duplicated. Manifest destiny sea to shining sea. Everything is great in the lower 48.
Very nice
19:16 beautiful train
13:11 strong "Polar Express" vibes
hi beautiful video of bnsf where these going to and from lots of snow there and more videos thanks.
At 16:12...... You never mentioned the deer, he was allowed beyond that point, as clearly in the video. Poor Deer, I am thinking about you.
Ah, Amtrak, the toy passenger rail service. If you don't want to go through Chicago, you'd better be traveling along one coast! Europe and Asia have fantastic passenger rail networks... makes me think we shouldn't have spent quite so much on The Marshall Plan.
Would be useful if you could mention the approximate date of the footage in your videos, at least the month/year.
Thanks for your suggestion! This was January of 2020.
My wife would say you are such a guy. ( not listening) At approximately the 4:30 mark in the video, they said the date. 🤪
An excellent, well-recorded and produced video. I worked as a Gandy dancer on the Rock Springs to Wamsutter sections in 1972 after my war.
Superb production! I admire greatly your ability to get out in the bad weather conditions and come away with pristine images. Thank you also for allowing the high definition medium to let you show action within wide angle shots. Cn you tell us what you are using for your camera?
I'll bet the person filming this sure got cold.
Those 3 engines are hauling butt thur that snow crap
6:12 majin boo and freezer :)
What cameras do you use for photo and video? Fantastic video!
What year was this? My wife and I came through feb 15, 2020
In the video he says it was January 2020.
Sasquatch be like ...i aint goin out in no snow storm...
Who is the narrator on this video? Sounds like the great Danny Harmon.
Sure sounds like Danny Harmon.
Makes me miss home. Also, did you see the $2.00 gas price at about 16:30? Miss that, too =)
Yes I remember complaining when it went over $1.00.
New look ice train city beautiful
I AM IN POSSESSION OF A TRANSIT LEVEL USED BY MY MATERNAL GRANDFATHER TO SHOOT THE GRADES INTO SKYKOMISH PREPARING FOR THE OPENING OF THE CASCADE TUNNEL ... OR SO MY MOMMA SAID !!!
👍👍👍👍👍
