New Mother Orangutan Tries To Care For Her Baby

- New and inexperienced Mum Jingga is trying to look after her baby the best she can. She has clearly not spent time around baby Orangs or other mother Orangutans. We think she is actually trying her best but has such limited knowledge of being a mother. Fortunately the research team at Blackpool Zoo is monitoring them both very closely.
The first orangutan baby to be born at the zoo in 20 years
The newborn baby is a critically endangered bornean orangutan born to first time Orangutan mother Jingga
RUclips sensation Jingga has had social media fame before when a video featuring her went viral back in 2015 - viral video - monkey sees a magic trick
The video was filmed of her in her previous home Barcelona Zoo in Spain
Jingga move to her new home Blackpool Zoo in 2017 to join her new Blackpool Orangutan family as part of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP)
14 year old Jingga was born in Barcelona in 2009 to mother Jawi and Father Karl
Now Jingga is settled at Blackpool zoo and has given birth for the first time to the tiny baby boy orangutan which has yet to be named
The father of the newborn baby orangutan is 13 year old Kawan who has recently moved to Blackpool Zoo in 2022 from Apenheul Zoo in the Netherlands and was an instant hit with the resident female orangutans Cherie Summer and Jingga
He came to the zoo as part of the European Endangered Species program after his much loved predecessor Ramon was moved to a new group in Germany where he has just become a new father himself
Kawan was specially selected by experts to join the female group at Blackpool Zoo and has settled into his new role as alpha male orangutan very well
We have recently added Blackpool Zoo to our list of zoos that we will be frequently visiting to film the apes, so watch out for more footage of this fantastic zoo. Blackpool has Gorillas and Bornean Orangutans and we were really impressed with both areas.
There are currently 5 Bornean Orangutans in one family group at Blackpool Zoo consisting of adult females Cherie Summer and Jingga
Alpha Male Kawan and the new male baby orangutan

I saw a video of an orangutan mum in a rehabilitation center. The mum did'n know what to do, especially how to nurse. The baby had to be taken away. Then someone had an idea: there was an employee (human) who was nursing her baby. So, as a last resort they decided to show the orangutan what to do. The orangutan watched attentively - and learned!
Thanks for the great comment, that's some good information. Thanks for sharing. 👍
I saw that video too. It’s a great idea. Orangutans learn from copying behaviour and someone needs to show her the way.
I’m confused…why on earth would a mother orangutan not know what to do?
@@debrashaw6411it’s nature. It doesn’t always come naturally. There are exceptions to every rule.
@@debrashaw6411mothering skills aren't inherent to orangutans, it's a skill they learn from watching their mothers
The orangutan in that story was separated from her mother too early to know what to do
She doesn’t seem to know what to do?! She’s very curious and gentle, although I’m not understanding the way she keeps patting the baby like she’s trying to burp it. I so hope that the caretakers are providing support and guidance to Jingga, and supplementing milk for her baby if she isn’t nursing enough. Thank you to the person who posted about the other video showing that Jingga was nursing and caring for her baby; that was a huge relief🥹💕. And many thanks to all of the wonderful people who help care for and keep this extraordinary species alive and thriving. You are all heroes ♥️🥰♥️👍!
Fortunately the Blackpool Zoo research team are monitoring them both, I think these early days with newborns are always worrying times but hopefully all will be good. Thanks for watching. Keep well and have a great week. 🥰
It looks like She has watched Human Moms the way she’s trying to Burp Her and Rock Her.
the patting appears to me as misguided affection. Baby seems to hunker down under the strength of the pats-
The baby is thinking “I’m tired of watching mommy eat. When can I eat?” The mother is trying. It’s cute how she pats the baby on his back and rocks him. 🦧♥️
Thanks so much for watching, glad you enjoyed the video. Keep well and enjoy the rest of your week. 🥰
"Trying" being the operative word here. I don't blame Jingga. Her situation hasn't prepared her for motherhood. As others have stated, hopefully we just aren't getting to see where the baby is feeding or hopefully the human caretakers are doing it. I've seen enough Orang videos to know the baby should be clinging close to mom for warmth and suckling and from what we've seen this poor newborn isn't getting that. If these shadows remain unchanged, I see an empty patch of straw where the baby orang once sat.
Baby was about a month old when we shot this video so he must be feeding however we didn't see him feed from Jingga all the time we were there. Thanks so much for watching. 👍
Seems many people are concerned about the mom and new baby. Please contact Blackpool directly with your concerns. And refrain from criticizing mother ape from not behaving properly … this is in part a learned behavior in natural surroundings. There may be good reason for concern yet they can only be addressed by zoo caretakers.
@@michelemarie2568 Yes. Amazing how people actually think they know as much or more than a research team of primatologists, zoologists, veterinarians, et al. because they have 'watched a lot of YT videos'. LOL
Seriously 🤦🏻♀️ the internet never ceases to give me second hand embarrassment. They watched some orangutan videos and now they are expert in orangutan motherhood. What the actual f@&k....
Baby needs to be held close, and cling to mom, or will lose body heat. Baby should be nursing around the clock as well, but baby looks healthy and strong. Jingga is doing the best she can. Thank goodness 🙏 for the lovely staff watching both closely.
Yes, all the time we were there the research team was watching them closely. I think she is doing what she thinks is right. Thanks for watching and for the great comment. 🥰
@@suejohnlaptop 😆 Well momJingga has to make plenty of milk, so she has to eat. They're both doing fine. Baby Jarang, whose name means "rare" is 6 months old now.
Чудо какое-то. Как мамочка неукюже, но скакой любовью нянькает своего детёныша.💕🌿
На это можно смотреть бесконечно милота
Большое спасибо за просмотр, мы очень ценим это. Хорошо держаться
Somebody needs to show her how to feed that beautiful baby. All she knows how to do is feed herself. God bless that little baby! I hope it survives.
This baby is so stinking cute with mom!💖
Thanks as always for watching Mary ❤
oh my goodness the mom acts like a human mom the way she patted his back i love this video
Thanks so much, we have an update on this baby coming out today. 🥰
Shes trying her best. You can tell she loves her baby.🥰🥰🥰
she needs to be shown a video on how orangs raise baby. i have seen shows that do it and its amazing. it works.
Thanks for watching, really glad you enjoyed the video, enjoy the rest of your week and keep well.
He’s a precious little baby boy ♥️
He sure is, thanks so much for watching, we really appreciate it. ❤️
I hope the staff took over the care! This new Mommy is trying but not quite there…
We spoke to the keeper today and they have reported that they haven't needed to step in and that Mum Orangutan is really trying her best. 👍 We have some great videos coming up with updates on both of them. Thanks so much for watching. 🥰
As long as baby is nursing well and sufficiently. ❤
Thanks for watching, we have a video out of baby feeding ruclips.net/video/m2nkuvav118/видео.html
Thanks for watching. 👍
@@ApeTracker1 thanks for the tip of your video showing the nursing.
That's a relief although she does have unusual parenting behaviour.
Why the music? I want to hear the two of them interact.
She keeps trying to burp him so cute
Thanks for watching and for the great comment, we really appreciate it. 👍
Keep us Posted on the baby’s well being!!
Will do, we are due back to Blackpool zoo. Thanks for watching.
New baby is very patiently waiting for his first milk! Not even fussing yet.
We were fortunate to get some footage of baby feeding, it wasn't for long but it was good to see that mum is feeding him. thanks so much for watching. 👍
That Mohawk is the dearest thing. Baby oranatans are the best.
Thanks for watching, really glad you enjoyed the video, enjoy the rest of your week and keep well.
Mom Jingga keeps patting baby on the back and head and at 1:58 it looks like Mom is giving her new baby a new hairdo!
Baby Orangs are renowned for crazy hairstyles, especially Hilda at Chester Zoo. Thanks again for watching Wendy we really do appreciate it. 👍
Way to go. Jinnga you guys are getting the hang of this
Yes, I think she is doing her best. Thanks for watching, we really appreciate it. 🥰

Have her read a book about nursing
Que Linda. Mama
Thanks so much for watching, we really appreciate it. 👍
Hopefully she is learning as she goes ❤
Thanks for watching, hopefully she will.
I would think the baby would cry if mom's not letting the little one eat.
Thanks for watching, we really appreciate it. We put a video up of mum feeding baby which is worth checking out. ruclips.net/video/m2nkuvav118/видео.html So hopefully he is getting enough food from mum. 👍
At first i will be truthful i didnt think she would ever catch on to mommy hood at all but wow moms doing so great now ... And hes growing up to be a big boy hes a year now wow 😅
It appears that the infant is either getting Jingga's milk or she's allowing the staff to feed it. Jingga is shaking/patting the baby to offer comfort/soothing just has human mothers do and some other primates. I'm assuming that Jingga is also allowing the baby to latch on to her when she wants and this is just not being shown to us viewers in these videos. If not, is the staff going to need to intervene before it's too late and hand rear the baby until Jingga can adequately provide motherly care?
People should not judge Jingga too harshly. She's a new mom and it's not like she has a manual telling her how to be a mother. Primates learn mothering skills from their own mothers and other females in the troop. First time human mothers struggle too, but at least we have books, videos, midwives, pediatricians to consult.
Blackpool Zoo should have been working with Jingga to build trust while Jingga was pregnant. They should have also been assisting her to teach her how to be an orangutan mother as other zoos do with first time primate moms. If they have been doing this then that hasn't been shown to us any uploaded videos. Some primates will hand over their babies to their human caretakers for feeding and helping to raise their infants depending on how much they trust their caretakers.
Yes, he must be getting milk as he is about a month old at this time but to be honest the whole time we were at the zoo we didn't see him feed. Thanks so much for watching and for the great and informative comment. 👍
Are they edible?
I think the mother is wonderfully gentle and loving to her baby.
I think she is really trying her best, Thanks so much for watching and commenting. 👍 we really appreciate it. 🥰
Esse bebê tem fome 😢
Thanks for watching, have a great week.
Good Care !! 🩷🩷
Cuteness overload 😍 😂😂❤❤❤
Давно не снимали этого малыша . Как он себя чувствует?
Thanks so much for watching.
Where is her post baby food? And another nursing female to mentor her? Supporting the mother is crucial ⚠️
We are not sure how much experience she had with other mothers and babies at Barcelona Zoo where she came from and this is the first baby Orangutan to be born at Blackpool Zoo for over twenty years. Thanks for watching and commenting. 👍
IF THEY WERE IN A TREE WHERE THEY BELONG, I BET BABY WOULD HOLD ON!
Thanks so much for watching. 👍
Poor Jerang. He certainly drew the short straw with Jingga for a mum!
She is certainly very inexperienced
I think they both drew a short straw. Baby seems to be mentally and physically handicapped
The size difference between the adults and the newborn orangutans always amazes me! The baby is so tiny!
Im a little worried watching this..
I’m wondering if she thinks it’s a toy? Is the baby getting enough milk? If the baby doesn’t thrive will you take the baby to hand rear it with the keepers?
We did manage to get some footage of her feeding baby, my guess is that the zoo will hand rear the baby only if they think it necessary. Thanks for watching. 👍
In their natural habitat with this kind of care baby would have already fallen to the forest floor.
Thanks for watching, keep well. 👍
Orangutans aren't as smart as us but they're not stupid. Has anyone ever tried showing a mom like this some videos of other moms raising their babies? If not, it could be worth a try.
We are not sure how the team at Blackpool have handled the preparation for helping Jingga but it is something we are going to try and find out. Thanks for watching. 🥰
Soooo whittle 💗
He sure is a little guy, thanks so much for watching. 🥰

It’s amazing how quickly Mother and Baby Orangoutang figure out their options
Jingga is a first time mum, but yes she seems to be working out what to do. Thanks so much for watching, really glad you enjoyed our video. Keep well and have a wonderful week. 🥰
I've been there and seen the baby. He was so extremely tiny ! I took a few videos.
Does she at least let the baby nurse? Or is she just feeding it wood shavings...
We did manage to get some footage of her feeding baby, Thanks for watching. 👍
Бестолковая молодая мать.Маоыш в опасности!
Спасибо за просмотр, будьте здоровы.
That is a teeny tiny baby orangutan!
He is a tiny precious bundle and Blackpool Zoo has zoo officially announced his name today - he is called Jarang
Thanks for watching and commenting, have a wonderful day 🦧🥰
No need to pat him on the back like you’re trying to burp him. You don’t give him any milk, mom
That orangutan is a better mother than probably most women.
Thanks so much for watching, I think she is trying her best. 👍
How would you know, mister hot ?
All first time moms need help and if she doesn’t have a mom to teach her how would she know what todo
Very true, whilst we were there the research team was monitoring them both, so hopefully they will be helping out. Thanks for watching. 🥰
You can see mom really wants to do what's right for baby, she just does not know what that is.
I believe she does care for baby, but is so inexperienced. 🥰
Burp first, then feed? Okay.
Quite right, thanks for watching, we really appreciate it. 👍
This is somewhat difficult to watch as mother Orangutan obviously does not know what she is doing. I felt badly for the infant. I hope the zoo is monitoring the situation because, if not, the baby isn't going to survive.
Thanks for watching, the zoo research team is monitoring both of them closely so hopefully mum orangutan will grow into the role. 👍
♥️💙
Did the baby survive?
He is surviving so far, thanks for watching. 👍
Well, it’s been 14 years since this video. I hope the kid made it but I doubt it.
Thanks for watching. 👍
Sometimes, as the saying goes, it takes a village.
Thanks for watching, really glad you enjoyed the video, enjoy the rest of your week and keep well.
Had she fed him yet?? You can tell she is trying. I hope she figures it out so they don't have to hand rear him.
Thanks for watching, if you check out our latest video of this mom and baby, she does feed him 👍 Keep well and enjoy your week. 🥰
@@ApeTracker1 thanks great news! Thanks for letting me know. I was worried.
Correction Ape Tracker Jingga was born in 2009 not 2099.
Thanks for spotting the mistake! 🤭
Its been corrected now, Have a great week
@@ApeTracker1 Thanks you too and you're welcome. Also on August 19th is international orangutan day (Where we celebrate Asia's one and only great ape/hominid with red hair).
Чючюндрик маленький
Thanks for watching.
The female is acting more like a baby sitter than a mother.
The baby is not being held close and seems to be left to its own, while the ‘mother’ eats.
Not sure if the kid will survive without human intervention
We have some update videos coming out tomorrow, they are both still doing ok. Thanks so much for watching and commenting, glad you enjoy our channel, we really appreciate it. 🥰🦧🥰
Please get rid of the background music. I'd much rather hear mom and baby.
Orangutans are quiet and you don't hear much from them
Background noise is added due to a lots of noise from people wanting to get a glimpse of the new baby
Thanks for watching
Could it be that there’s no milk coming from mum ? therefore there’s no incentive for the baby to persist in it’s attempts to nurse. Mother Nature does a good job of priming newborns to seek out nourishment, but if there’s nothing there except maybe a small amount of colostrum there’s no ‘reward’. The little guy seems to have a
big round swollen belly too, but it’s really hard to get a good look at him, so I could be wrong. 🤞
Thanks for watching and for the informative comment, we did get a video up of the baby feeding, not sure that he got much milk though. 👍
All she needs is a little guidance from the staff and they’ll be fine. The sad thing to think about are the babies who are rejected in the wild
We have some update videos coming out over the next few days of mum and baby. Thanks so much for watching. 👍
😇🙈💋💋❤️❤️💐💐
Thanks for watching Maria, glad you enjoyed the video. ❤️
First timers can be very rough
Yes you are certainly correct. 🥰
I hope this baby is ok as this video has horrified me, I hope the staff have intervened, she is slapping that baby’s head very hard and does not seem to want to feed her.
Baby is ok and still with his mother, she is inexperienced but is learning a lot, I am hoping to get back to the zoo soon for an update video. 🥰
This baby is a crippled underdeveloped one...something is wrong with him.
Hopefully not, but I guess time will tell.
She’s kinda rough on baby
She is an inexperienced mum for sure, hopefully she will grow into the role. Thanks for watching, have a great day. 👍
