The F40PH is quite simply THE American passenger locomotive for me. As a kid in England I grew up with a VHS called Railroading USA that featured them heavily in places like Horseshoe Curve and Ashland Virginia - but they were long-gone when I finally visited the US for the first time back in 2015. So, having recently moved to Canada, it's really awesome to see them still in service here - a realisation of a childhood dream. :)
F40PH is one of my favorite episode ever and VIA Rebuilt F40PH-2D.
Ethan Campbell really!!! Thank you very much!!!

@@VIARailFan6448 hey im like ethan cambell juts i love the p42dc video
I loved those F engines of via but what I really like is at the top there are red tail lights beside the number of the locomotive now they don,t use that when the train backs up if only they put on the new via trains
RIP via rail F40ph 6400 1986-2010 via's baby will be missed
VIA rail 6400 my you rest in peace you are the biggest star of them all. you are my favorite engine out of the rest.
When I’m older I’m might start a company called eastern transit and the first loco to be on the roaster is f40-3d
Cool
F40-3d I wonder what it will be
My favorite F40PH from VIA Rail is 6425, because I've known it as Bradley from Tyler Hildebrand's model railway series Connor and Friends.
6:01 is from me. This pic was taken at Gaspé Station with VIA 616 and the engine was 6452. Drove it couple of times since I'm a hostler now.
Cool, are you a engineer?
@@cnguy3948Official Yes, a yard engineer/ conductor
@@cnguy3948Official Not then, but today, yes I am. Yard engineer
its good that the fitted a new paint scheme in before they go
With how many times that railroads keep rebuilding their engines, I'll likely be dead before they're retired.
Year 2092 : Canadian Man dies at age 100, in other news, ViAmtrak are announcing their 50th rebuild of their antique workhorse locomotives, dubbed the GEMD F40PHACi-104DM
Right
Yeahh about the last F40PH thingy, Altamont Corridor Express here in the Bay Area will be using the F40PH-3Cs with their new SC-44 chargers, with an overhaul to them, because they ain’t that old yet, only 24 years old
Metra of Chicago still uses f40 ph-3 and f40phm-3 regularly and they still plan to use them for a long time
“Via will most likely be the last company to operate F40’s”
Metra; is that a challenge?
Metra will be operating all of their locomotives until the company goes bankrupt
About the last F40 thing, Metro North still uses their F40CAT-3C's along with GP-40F-2s as their primary power so they will be around along Via in 15-20 years.
Rex_ The_Railfanner by the way those Metro North F40ph have NJ Transit numbering the 4100s. I actually saw them in Service on NJ transit at River Edge Metro North NJ Transit Passack Valley Line
what about the qnsl railroad
Another difference:
Amtrak Horn- P5/K5LA (in one case a Leslie RS5T)
Via Horn- K3L/emergency horn I have no clue what type it is.
EDIT: Not an RS5T, an S5T, sorry bout that.
Also, 7 or 8 Amtrak F40PH’s still exist unaltered in the Beech Grove shops, and the shop and Bear Delaware. (Correct me if I am wrong.)
I believe the emergency horn on the via f40s ARE modified K5LLA's
6400 actually wasn't the first VIA F40 wrecked. There were actually several others which were wrecked and scrapped before 6400 was. I can't remember them all though.
There's also a few other things that could have been mentioned here too:
- 6403 was depicted on currency, and so they had to renumber it.
- When they were rebuilt, they were classed F40PH-3D, which when you think about it, says "3D"!
Lol
I hope they do fit another paint job for the Vias F40PH
I see them almost all the time on 73 and 83 on the Toronto Windsor corridor
The last rebuild F40PD -2Ds got HEPs and blended dynamic braking.
Song at 3:50?
Also, the reason VIA F40s have a desktop cab is because of standards in Canadian cab designs, desktop controls were first introduced to North America with the Canadian comfort cab, and quickly became the standard up here.
The thumbnail is two GMDD F40PH-2Ds near the Rocky Mountaineer station in Vancouver, BC
would love to see you make a video about the northlander (i mean that train that was first a Trans Europe Express train)
Now it’s going to be 2022-2024 along with the LRC and some HEP and possibly some Renaissance cars when the new Siemens trains enter service.
What's the bell on the via rail f40ph-2d?
Are there still any F40PHs hauling passenger trains in Toronto? And which trains I could catch them?
5:37 is that you?
my idea for the "fitting one more paint scheme" will be painting the gpa-30h's into heritage schemes that represent the paint schemes like on the inherited CP and CN units, paint them even in to the canadian and delivery schemes. although it will be a pity since it will probably be in 2028, 2 years before Via will retire them.
RIP VIA 6400. It's sad that it got wrecked. I hope she gets to live again one day.
She is I have a company
I know I’m wrong but I feel like the D in -2D means desktop for the desktop controls
2:41 that F40PH used to be GO transit F40PH 510 for those of you who don't know
Engines of CP / CN lol
RIP F40’s in the future
Even tho you do via but can you do one on CN’s c44-9wl and c40-8m
optimus prime Riley maybe.....
Railfans just go YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS over these train and im a american railfan so i know what im talking about
645s are 2 stroke, not 10 stroke.
5:37 what kind of horn is that?
What the heck is a 10 stroke engine....dang
What website do you use for information on the locomotives??????
Wikipedia.
CSX has some and wanted to continue the f40ph but they canceled it
Forgot to mention it being on the back of the Canadian $10.00 bill from 2013
YES!
Ontario_ transit =
I have a question, what is the difference between GMD and EMD? They seem to make the same model of trains to me. (maybe GMD is for Canada and EMD is for the US?)
Yes- General Motors Diesel was GM's Canadian rail subsidiary (plant in London, ON), where EMD was the US. Later I think the structure was simplified and all engines were produced under the EMD names.
Did I just see amtrak f40ph 406 before it became a NPCU and Heritage Unit?
That might not be true, metra currently and as of this video, and since Amtrak retired their f40s, has the largest fleet of f40s in the world with over 200 and as of 2016 started rebuilding them to extend their service life by another 40 years.
Had you heard of GO
Can you do newjersy transit please I would love that
i love the f40 but i like it more with the amtrak livery but i like vias p42dc livery more than amtraks
My question is why don't they have sanders?
+Daniel Lucas that I don't know.
It's a damn shame that 6400 couldn't be fixed.
Bruh why did via rail 6400 derail
Fun fact: The F40PH is a anti-Furry Symbol on 4chan and other Forms, It makes me love the loco even more
Miku Hat Gaming ik lol.
Miku Hat Gaming Wait, are you serious? Thats awesome!
Tiny Cheese yeah, look it up on Know Your Meme, it talks about it in full detail
Coastaku lmao.
Sean mark
Isnt metra tye longest operater of the f40ph?
Amtrak is!
VIARailFan6448 Not counting Amtrak's NPCU F40phs, Metra might more than likely will be the last railroad to retire their F40phs. I know they're not going anywhere soon, but they can't stay forever.
@@VIARailFan6448 VIA Rail will not Retire Their F40s
I actually believe the MBTA will be the last to foster an F40PH because MBTA has been rebuilding there F40PH-2C & F40PHM-2Cs info F40PH-3C which the day the rebuild program on the 3C should be done buy December 2021 and the day it should extend the life but 15 - 20 years which means MBTA will start probably retiring there F40s some time in 2040 witch will most likely be the very real end of all F40s which means MBTA will more than likely be the last company to ever roster an F40
Amtrak f40s actually have a top speed on 166 kmh / 103 mph
yes
Quite sad that VIA will retire their F40's in 2030.
Yeah I know its kinda a sad/scary thought!
Some video
Some via f40s the via name is small and some via name is big
For real!!?
VIARailFan6448 VIA Rail won’t retire their F40s
5:31 I prefer the ditch light placement on the Amtrak F40s more than the VIA RAIL ones
Has to do with intended usage and installation. The FRA required them for crossing warning, which is why they flash. TC required them for (and hence ditch lights) to actually shine down trackside after a washout caused derailment, therefore they do not flash.
That’s really interesting thanks
@@drdoomspire3038 always welcome
When the end of the life of the f40ph in 2030, in 2040 the new t1 5550 will be Scrapped
FP9
Does Anyone remember via rail f40ph 6444
2:19 I think you need to do a little research on how internal combustion engines work.... 10 stroke...... 10 inch stroke are two different things it is inface a 4 stroke "4 cycle" with a 10 inch stroke
and of course I misspell in-fact....
also yes as other commentors have staved Chicago metra still runs f40ph's I can hear the "screamers" from my house with the high idle for HEP
645’s are 2 stroke motors.
The F40 was really the only passenger Loco that I liked because of its design of not being super aero style. Also the green Renaissance scheme makes it look really mean. Better enjoy them while they last before they get taken over by uglier passenger locos like GE Genesis units
do you hate the renaissance paint.
@@trevorderper5050 No i like it and I dislike the older ones
F9
Why don't these engines have sanders? Doesn't make much sense....
Idek lol
I've heard that they (like TTC) have problems with the sanders freezing in the wonderful balmy winters of Canada.
Hmmm......
HMMM......
*Metra will be the last*
Via rail got rid of their K5LA which I don’t like
The thumbnail looks like a C-C or A-1-A-A-1-A
f40ph- 2d
rip via rail 6400 19??-2010
What happened to it?
where koolaid via
Amtark 7538
ok
Should be 2 stroke not 10 stroke.
Metra’s f40s will outlast via’s
I don’t like the ditch lights of the Amtrak F40PH I like them without ditch lights
Ahh, but Transport Canada and the FRA like them with them.
you should get instagram
I have an insta. But its me personal one.
VIARailFan6448 well make one for RUclips!
I just might lol.
