    Ten LRC cars, 8 coaches and 2 cafe cars were built for Amtrak.

  • @raakone

    Thanks, so iconic. Another difference between the LRC-1 coaches and all the others, the internal layout. The LRC-1s were used on the International, jointly run with Amtrak, partially because they were the most like Amtrak...one or two of the cars were basically AmCafe cars in everything but looks, and they used luggage racks, rather than the airline-style bins used on LRC-2s and 3s (and for that matter, on HEP-2s)

    What you did not touch upon is that most LRC running stock the doors would freeze. Making them inoperable. It wasn't until late 1985 until the doors were changed from electrical to change gearing. I enjoyed your presentation. It was a good remember when. I'm Wayne, former Via Ontario employee. Say hey, if you're talking to another employee. All the best

    The LRC is the Class 43 HST of Canada.

      I agree: the LRC and the High Speed Train (HST), also known as the InterCity 125 have similarities: they are both high-speed train consists in their respective countries (Canada; United Kingdom) that consist of locomotives (LRC locomotives; British Rail Class 43) and passenger cars (LRC passenger cars; British Rail Mark 3 coaches for HST service) designed to be used together with the locomotives sandwiching the passenger cars like if they were true diesel multiple units (DMU's) (even though some of the production sets are designated British Rail Classes 253, 254 and in the future, 255). They also both have/had prototypes from the early 1970's (LRC prototype at 1:30 in the video; British Rail Class 41 locomotive/252 "DMU").

    Brilliantly documented series! Especially this one! Back in summer of 84 my friends and I took an FPA-4 powered VIA train from Windsor Ontario to London Ontario! Then on the return trip we were pulled by an LRC! It was awesome!

  • @wilfstor3078
    @wilfstor3078 6 лет назад +1

    It is cool to know that the LRC locomotives were delivered I think 1 or 2 years before the coaches. So it was not un common to see LRC locomotives pulling standard Blue Cars in their early years. This can be seen in the cover photo of this video.

    That photo...it speaks so many words! The oldest and latest designs of Canadian ALCo/MLW cab units. I actually had no idea the LRC's were diesel powered, or that they had ALCo prime movers...until I saw that smoke show that is! I can see why you want to get a model of VIA 6782 now!

    Nice memories brought back.. Thank you/Merci! I remember I was just a tot when my (deceased now) dad used to take me to the Sainte-Foy station in the late 60s, waiting for the Montréal-Québec City train to arrive and pull in about 8:00 ish p.m..That was before the advent of Via Rail neddless to say. It was the CN passenger service. Later on about 1976 through 1985, they rerouted the train to get to downtown main station,:la gare du Palais. I also fremeber a day and age when we would go to Chicoutimi and there was the Montréal-Chicoutimi and Montréal/Québec City trains running through the city and honking their horns non-stop.all tracks in Chicoutimi have been removed for a bike path. The same for the line in Q.C. en route for Chicoutimi. So many alines were canceled and terminated too from Q.C. to different and diverse destinations within the province or outside.Too bad..I also remeber when the first Bombardier LRC train and engine came out, they put it on display near Q.C. Palais station.That was the ultimate technology at the time.We were looking forward to take or see it on tracks and in operation. Tyhe tracks were removed since then where it was showcased and on display. I've actually always wondered why they didn't keep them any longer than that as a matter of fact.

    The 3:59 in the red banner refers to the travel time between Toronto and Montreal (non-stop). I've seen these leave Montreal --Quebec does not require horn-honking at grade crossings, which is scary when you see one of these zoom by at 100 mph (160kph).
    The 900 million mile claim for LRC coaches is absurd and incorrect (nine women can't have a baby in one month). The 900 million mile figure is the result of multiplying the number of coaches times their individual mileage--i.e, "coach-miles," not miles.

  • @robertbruce1887
    @robertbruce1887 Год назад

    Just one small detail, the LRC was reliably fast at 95mph, but not the fastest. I think the Turbo was supposed to do service at 120mph, did a record of 140 mph on one run. Steam engines during the 1930's & '40's often ran over 100mph, an example being in 1957 when Steam locomotive #5704 ran 3 miles ( between New Hamburg & Shakespeare Ont.) in 96 seconds, which is over 112 mph

    • @robertbruce1887
      @robertbruce1887 Год назад

      Re: high speed steam Locomotives e.g the one that did 112mph in 1957., should have said STARTING in the '30s &'40s . Also forgot to mention that 112mph run was not a special speed trial but simply a random opening of the throttle & seeing how fast the locomotive would go.

      Problem with Engines of N&W is that most of the footage was shot during the 1940s and 1950s.

    I like LRC's but I would prefer P42DC's Because there more reliable and more well Last Longing.

      The P40/42 was actually designed around the LRC. The carbody of the GE was expanded to ensure ease of servicing.
