I am battling cancer and lost a woman I had a 3 1/2 year relationship with because I got cancer. I can relate to the song in so many ways. A masterpiece. I had never heard The War on Drugs music before hearing this song but I’m now a fan for whatever time I have left.

This is the best song of 2021 by far. Whoever produced it just dropped an incredible masterpiece on us. Love the 80s-inspired touches from this band; they always manage to meld that sound with something else that is uniquely their own. The resulting songs never fail to hit home. Thank god there is still music like this out there!

I shared this song with my 71 year old dad, who had never heard it. He text me back "yeah, I've always loved that song!" Because of how beautiful and nostalgic it is, he assumed it was a classic from the 80's that he remembered. God, I love this band!

The female backup singers really help make this song. Rather than just "frill," they add an orchestral punch all their own, and so they end up being worth listening to all in themselves. Excellent complement.

The morning after my mother passed away from cancer, my dad and I had to go to the funeral home to get things squared away for the funeral. As we came into the parking lot, this song came on the radio. We sat and listened to the whole thing before going inside. This song helps me to feel connected with everyone who experiences loss and that feeling of being lost, in whatever form it takes. A truly beautiful song.

War on Drugs are a special band, give you nostalgia for the past, give you hope for the future, give you poetry you can believe in, uplift you when you're down. I've loved this band for 10 years now and finally got to see them live earlier this year and they we're amazing! Having listened for so many years, seeing them live was quite emotional! Love em!

yeah I love this but for some reason the YT video version audio sounds terrible. The lead guitar and vox are clipping throughout and the bass/low-end keeps phasing in and out of the mix. Head over to spotify or apple music for a superior experience of this great song until they fix this.

Heard this song for the first time earlier this year. Was sitting in my car on break, feeling low after my divorce was finalized, and then i heard this on XM radio. Perfectly bittersweet memories and feelings hit me with each lyric. Plus, the music and Lucius background vocals just made me feel ao many things. They easily became a favorite of mine.
Gen X'er here. This is by far the best thing I've heard in 20+ years. And I mean it. Good lord what a song. To see these guys are my age and finding relevance with the kids today is inspiring. And then I saw that they sell their album on casette tape on their website. Be still my beating heart.

Granduciel, you absolute genius
By far the best discovery of this dreadful year, real chords, thumping drums, a crisp piano, even a saxo... reminds me of the 80's, all delivered with a bite and hunger for more
I got hooked on this track in January 23. I was stuck in a hotel in Angeles City Philippines with terrible food poisoning. I couldn't move or eat and lay there with the TV remote playing this song on RUclips over and over again. Watching this video and loving every second. Its simply outstanding and now I'm better....well its even sweeter !!!
Those Lucius girls really make this song. Its amazing as it is but when they sing.. "we're all just walking through this darkness" it goes to another level
I can't believe how far ahead these guys are of the pack when it comes to genuine music and instrumentation. Is there something they know that everyone else doesn't? They have beauty in their music that no one else can capture. One can only hope they inspire a generation so that great music can continue in the future.

Desolation row -> ‘they’re painting the passports brown (fascism/covid proof of vaccine)... the circus is in town ... the blind commissioner... they've got him in a trance (media brainwashing/pressure to conform/police a specific narrative)... And the riot squad they're restless, they need somewhere to go (ie. after the resistance) ... As Lady (the “woman” is taken to safety/shelter from the storm... while awaiting the bridegroom’s arrival)... and I (a watchman)... look out (keeping watch) tonight (=from the darkness)... (the betrayer/treacherous betrays/cheats in the cover of darkness... )
It’s quite smart, as Dylan loaded so many (symbolic) images into the two songs referenced-granduciel is sort of having his cake and eating it too... ie. he made what sounds like a cool pop song, that floats (not heavy) as it’s kind of shallow (in comparison to the weight of a Dylan masterpiece), he’s barely casting any aspersions in the process-but once you dig into Dylan’s lyrics, you know he’s actually pointing towards what is happening-the darkness that the world is in. He’s subtly playing the role of the town crier... (again by quoting a previous town crier) ‘it’s 12 o’clock and all is (not) well... get out while you can, the enemy has landed...’
I’m pushing 70, and This group is one my all time favorites. I picked (1st discovered 2016) them up and not put them down. I love their stuff.

So true. I normally can’t listen to anything made in the last 20 years. I usually listen to “traditional” country during my downtime but this song is phenomenal.

There’s a lot of bands trying to capture the 80’s vibe. None of them do it like this. This band doesn’t emulate or copy, they dig deep into a collective nostalgia and make it new. They give me the feeling of sitting in the back seat of a car when “The Boys of Summer” comes on the radio, hot summer nights before AC, first kisses and drags from stolen cigarettes.

This song came out when I was staying in a cabin for a few weeks because my (now ex) wife asked me to leave. I felt like it was reading my mind. I listened to it over and over again and it just spoke to me in a way that was almost unbelievable.

I wasn't sure if your comment was said with sarcasm or not. But I don't think having a story attached to a piece of music is optional for many people. It's just the way of things. Music has an amazing ability to take a given moment we are living through and providing a safe and certain place for that memory to be held. I for one can't imagine it being any other way as I'm sure so many others couldn't. It a great gift music gives us.

@ghost mall totally agree and the 80's echoing drums are pure Baywatch Theme! Grundial has a feel for epic soundscapes that reminds me of Knoffler in the Telegraph Road era of Dire Straights. Same passion.
Dire Straits, Tom Petty, Springsteen, The Cure, Pink Floyd...they have all the right influences. This one has a Def Leppard/Whitesnake touch also.

I love this song. There's such a recognizability to this song, it's nostalgic and familiar with it's deep 80's vibe and sound. You listen to it the first time and you feel you've heard it before long ago yet it's new. It's a rare yet comforting feeling to come across and not something you do in music very often.
