Now that is a very cool start up! If you listen carefully after the first few seconds, you can hear the valves slapping. Great catch! Thanks for posting this.
I'd love to see some photos of those units one day. It's a real shame that the Dash 7's are gone, I think they were a lot younger than their contemporary EMD counterparts. (which are still in service!)
Great catch yet again! I never get tired of the good old GE B40-8, B40-8W, C40-8, and C40-8W engies! And that idle is amazing, noisy and grouchy, lol like all ALCO and GE engines. :) ;) :)
Please don't delete any of your videos! Especially your startup ones! They are awesome! They put me to sleep. Especially if it's hooked to a theatre sound system so that it seems that the locomotive is actually in the house. This engine sounds nice and I LOVE the whoosh sound it make, Also when the other loco's that pulled up at the end of the video added even MORE BASS! LOVED IT! I have enjoyed locomotive engines since I was a kid. My grandfather worked for a tar plant in Denison Tx and ran engines for them there back in the 1970's. They had Katy Depot there as well. Anyways, Thanks for your awesome videos! Have a great day!
Thanks for the comment! You don't have to worry about me deleting any of my videos. I just wish my newer cameras could capture that bass like my old ones did!
@SpeakerPolice ya it is amazing...i just dont know how much time they have left.....Selkirk is one of CSX's rail yards and it is in upstate NewYork pretty close to Albany...im pretty sure its CSX's only GE maitnence facility so that could be another reason why there based there.
It's possible that the Waycross shops retained a couple Dash 7's for yard work, but I seriously doubt it. There are the WLO1 and 2, but those don't really count.
I saw this loco a couple months ago, it is now owned by GECX, it was in storage for a while and I caught it being moved somewhere on a CSX train, it wasnt running and I doubt it will run again
Update: it has recently come out of American Motive Power in Dansville, NY and it has been sold to the Arizona & California Railroad and is now numbered AZRC 4014
As I suspected, CSX 9249 is an RCPHG4, a type of unpowered slug. She can no longer move under her own power. While still looking just like a B23-7 on the outside, her engine has been semi-permanently deactivated and is now just dead weight. D: Notice that her radiators have been plated over, and her stack removed.
Spending less on fuel. A slug (or drone) is an engineless unit that retains its traction motors. It is connected to a REAL locomotive, and gets power for its traction motors from the locomotive. This provides ALMOST as much power as two locomotives while using half as much diesel fuel.
I can rivet count right back. xD The Dash 8's are the oldest LOCOMOTIVES on the roster; the 9xxx series aren't locomotives--they're unpowered slugs. ;) And some of those units actually do still contain their prime movers for extra weight--they've just been deactivated. ^^
I have never seen a B32-8 before, no. I believe it's the 12-cylinder equivalent of the B40-8; the B40 having 16 cylinders. NS had several and CSX a few, but I believe they are all long retired.
i still wonder how you can tell if its a GE, EMD, Dash 8,9, or other engine. they all look the same from the outside, but i still don't know how each sound like. you should make a video on this topic lol.
though, occasionally you'll see one or two. and to think that 5 years ago, they were not extremely common, but common enough to see working hard. I wish the C30-7's were still chugging away. a true work horse, even if they were older than 30 years old. they out lasted the typical life span of a locomotive. of course, they were built to last.
Indeed, the radiators are one of the best spotting points. If it's got wings, chances are high that it's a GE! (EMD made locos with canted radiators, like the SD45 and SD70MAC, but never really had 'wings' like the GEs do.)
@tonymagona334 I always look at the trucks, both have different types and that seems to be the quickest way to tell. Also the nose itself whether standard or wide-cab is different from each manufacturer. There's a lot of other things too, those are just the most obvious to me.
Kentucky Trainiac Included in 'Dash 8'. I'm not sure where the B40s went, though my suspicion is they've been cut up. It's possible some found forever homes on shortlines as proper road power
And about the description, were you referring to it being the oldest GE not in the process of being retired like CSX's Dash 7 fleet? I mean, they still have a handful of Dash 7's, including a sole surviving U-boat used to haul their police specials!
Dash 8s are still around; Dash 7s, no. Those were all retired from the CSX system in November 2009. They all has aluminum (!!) wiring, which went bad and caused them to be retired. Had they been wired with copper, they would probably still be around!
The trio of C40-8W's randomly showing up after this B40-8 was too good.
Glad you like!
Now that is a very cool start up! If you listen carefully after the first few seconds, you can hear the valves slapping. Great catch! Thanks for posting this.
Agreed; these and their six-axle contemporaries are really cool-looking.
This unit just got sent to a new home on the Arizona and California out west, now existing as ARZC 4014.
Good to know she still lives!
i will never get tired of hearing those monsters wake up
takes me back to the 90's...I still remember seeing dash 7's and dash8's...and I was only 4 or 5. I wish they had not done away with them.
With the very distinctive "whoop!" air compressor.
Mike Chapman Yes indeed!
Always liked the B-boats. We had one on Cape Cod for a couple of years - very distinctive as it gurgled by.
Mike Chapman I'm sad to see them go. :C
Now I'm more biased to the EMD camp, but man does that old 7-FDL have some chug to it!
This remains my favorite GE startup video. Check out 'That Classic GE Chug' for more of this iconic sound!
SpeakerPolice Yeah seen that, oldie but a goodie for sure!
@@SpeakerPolicea CSX engineer starting up Conrail 5060
Awesome idle sound from this old GE.
THX for the upload man!
2:18 A Dash 8 parade during a dash 8 startup...that was a nice surprise
They do look nice. I like it when I'm out and I catch a C40-8. They're still out there, for now!
SpeakerPolice after doing research CSX still owns a few of these there in Waycross in New paint with some MP15’s and AC60CW’s
I'd love to see some photos of those units one day. It's a real shame that the Dash 7's are gone, I think they were a lot younger than their contemporary EMD counterparts. (which are still in service!)

Many have heard the ALCo spirit, still alive and well, living inside the 7FDL engine. :3
I know this video is old but how epic to catch a start up of not only a Dash 8 but a B axle... So awesome
This is still one of my favorite startups. Love how she seems to 'awaken' from slumber!
O man and the lop those Dash 8's had is so awesome
Check out my video titled 'That Classic GE Chug!' for more awesome B40 sounds!
SpeakerPolice Will do thanks
Thank you very much! I do believe this video is the best representation of the classic GE sound that I currently have. :3
Ah, I LOVE Dash 8's, Dash 7's, GEVO's, Dash 9's, and AC units from GE!
these are possibly the best looking GE freight engines ever made
Thank you! I use a Kodak EasyShare M1033 point-and-shoot camera.

@@SpeakerPolice Still a good job though! Thanks! ☺
Never have I ever heard of a three-mile train or a 10% grade without cog drive.
That would be the sound of the trainline brake air compressor kicking on. :3
@SpeakerPolice Theres still a couple of C30-7's left at Selkirk for yardd service. AWESOME VIDEO!! i didnt know CSX still had these
Awesome looking loco.
The 2nd most beautiful locomotive model (after the EMD F-40PH) in one of the most beautiful paint schemes. Awesome!
Glad you like! I'm partial to the Alco PA, myself :P
You got that right! xD The 7FDL is a pretty nice-sounding engine, especially on these older units before the EPA went crazy with the muffler laws. xD
@SpeakerPolice
for sure pretty awesome. At my hometowns rail yard they never shut off their locomotives
That'd be awesome! GE built most of the Dash 7's in the early to mid 80's, and the GP40-2's were made starting in the mid-70's.
it was a b36-7 and i have seen them often lately on the mow trains on the blue ridge sub
They are. The sound amazing, this one sounds like a large piece of industrial equipment. Almost a perfect engine in my opinion. Nice Vid.
@SpeakerPolice YN3 actually, but these unit's cabs along with the C39's and the C40's are so good looking.
The 'knock' is still there in the GEVO engine, but it is very subdued.
The sounds are AMAZING especially on the laptop external speakers and subwoofer!! You can feel it in the next room!
Adam Choruzek Glad you enjoy! I miss these guys...
My all time favorite older units were the c30-7A that conrail used to have also the B23-7s
Sounds funny starting up. You can hear the pistons!
Dubstep Locomotive
I love the colors of the CSX B40-8
Good old YN2!
They're not ugly, they're utilitarian! x3
at the beginning it started to sound like a steam locomotive! lol
@SpeakerPolice ya it is amazing...i just dont know how much time they have left.....Selkirk is one of CSX's rail yards and it is in upstate NewYork pretty close to Albany...im pretty sure its CSX's only GE maitnence facility so that could be another reason why there based there.
For an old model CSX keeps her well maintained and painted
I wish they were still mechanically intact.
It's possible that the Waycross shops retained a couple Dash 7's for yard work, but I seriously doubt it. There are the WLO1 and 2, but those don't really count.
I really miss the Dash Sevens myself. :'(
I saw this loco a couple months ago, it is now owned by GECX, it was in storage for a while and I caught it being moved somewhere on a CSX train, it wasnt running and I doubt it will run again

Gotta love that diesel "knock." It's not as pronounced on an EMD,but if you listen carefully, you can hear it,especially on 567's and 645's.
There's something special about the sound of all big diesels. ^^
The Freightliner race truck with the twin turbo Detroit I saw last night was especially as good XD
Love that FDL sound, great video Pat!
Some great vids on this channel with awesome sound! Subscribed!
BoringTrainFilms Thank you!!
Thanks =) I believe it would be notch 2 or 3, it's higher than low idle. I'm not sure exactly which throttle position, though.
Either or, any Dash 7 still in service is amazing! Where abouts is Selkirk? I might have to go see those units!
Love that sound!
That would be the air compressor for the brakes kicking on. =)
@SpeakerPolice CSX still has a B23-7 in use by me on a local train in GR
That's how I wake up each morning...
Excellent!

Diesel locomotive Fan Glad you enjoy it!! I do miss them...

5950 is actually ex-Conrail, built as their 5060.
What, just now? I thought they were all retired December 2009!
Very cool! Will yours be in this scheme, or the newer YN3?
I have a yellow one like that, but mine came from Conrail. =)
Yeah x3 Have you seen the other videos I made of the party? x3
Yes, it is indeed there. :3
@SpeakerPolice ya....i think your right there...ill go look them up soon
I think you're right; Baldwins can only MU with themselves.
My favorite unit the Dash 8’s, HELL YEHA!
They were good units!

@Aj 47 Thanks! Haha
Yeah! It sounds awesome. 8D
I'm glad. ^^
CSXT Taft Yard, Orlando, FL
this is my fav unit it had power and room in the cab
I know a few live on with Pan Am :B
Lovely video you made!
Thank you!
Awesome 8D
my 2 favorite engines
Weren't there a few B30-7's still active, in and around Waycross GA? The ex C&O units?
I know! I miss them already! D:
One of the only decent GE units out their. The 4 and 6 axle D8s were a solid loco. Sad to see them go.
This startup was better than usual for some reason. I suspect it was a very cold engine.
I have never seen a B32-8 before, no. I believe it's the 12-cylinder equivalent of the B40-8; the B40 having 16 cylinders. NS had several and CSX a few, but I believe they are all long retired.

whats that little snort at 1:01 i love that noise on my models
Excellent video
@SpeakerPolice oops did i say C30-7's? i meant to say B30's but yes i actually saw them last time i was there which was in like march/april
It really, really does. D:
@shadowknight227 i love that shwa sound
Is this at or near Waycross, Georgia?
Now I personally like the EMD's more (please do not start any arguments), but that GE chug and the distinctive whoop sound mighty fine!
Trainzguy 2472 LOL no reason for arguments here!

@SpeakerPolice Aha i do see that hmm wonder what the reason is for that? I saw them calling it a drone
@alexander1485 well, C40-8s without the wide body cab
Thank you ^^ Sounds like a nice model! Call me when you find a sound system that can rattle the picture frames on the wall. xD
I miss those locomotives
Me too.

I wonder what the "Shwa" sound is at 1:00 . Air compressor?
That is exactly what that was.
I dont normaly go alot on GE's but that sounds nice!! Much better than an ES44 or summin.
That's an old Conrail, it's got the marker lights next to the Number boards, +10 points lol
Kentucky Trainiac That is correct! :P
SpeakerPolice Has it been retired yet
Kentucky Trainiac All spartan cab Dash 8s are off roster as of last October. Some C40-8s went to the Pan Am Railroad (MEC)
SpeakerPolice What about the B Boats
Kentucky Trainiac Included in 'Dash 8'. I'm not sure where the B40s went, though my suspicion is they've been cut up. It's possible some found forever homes on shortlines as proper road power
Obrigado =)
