CSX GEVO (ES44AC/AH) Starting and Idling

- I caught this just in time (pulled up on my bike just as the starting bell started ringing!) I debated cutting that part out, but ultimately decided not to, because you can hear the fuel pump and another locomotive (C40-8W) idling in the background. So here it is: My first video of GE's newest locomotive cranking up. Enjoy! Look closely when the prime mover begins to crank and you will see the engine access doors moving O_O

For those wondering the sound heard at 1:45 is the 3 phase electrically driven air compressor starting without load. The Psshh heard a second or two after is the unloader valve actuating which then seals the compression chambers in the compressor thus allowing it's now rotating parts to begin compressing air. I saw this first hand while interning for 4 months in a locomotive shop. The only engine driven air compressors I saw were on EMDs coupled by a direct shaft. There was no clutch between compressor and engine so the compressor always rotated at engine RPM, however they also used unloader valves which do not allow the rotating compressor to build pressure until needed at which point they actuate. I too use to be perplexed by those sounds. :)
This is all correct! I love how diesels from the different builders all have their own unique sounds. :3
master7chief I always hear that sound when 8 play train sim 2017 sometimes
For anyone that may be saddened by seeing one of these diesel locomotives blow a little bit of soot, that amount of soot is pretty minuscule compared to their steam powered predecessors. With steam locomotives, it’s not unusual to see huge, dense clouds of soot just billowing of the smokestacks. It’s the same story with ships.
To this day, it amazes me how slowly GE prime movers run. Great catch. I also like hearing the classic GE whoop when the compressor starts up.
Great sounding Startup, and i think i hear a hint of what us railroaders call "Turbo Cough" It happens when the turbo on an engine kicks in before the engine actually fires. Happens a lot to GE's but is harmless and cool to hear!!
Thank you! I been telling that to people for so long! I saw it in a video of how locomotives are made, they were testing a 710 in a SD70ACe and it said clearly it should make around 4,500 HP.
Patrick,
What a great video! Inside every GE is the heart of an Alco! No one would have been surprised if this thing would have belched coal black smoke as the prime mover was coming online, just to show its heritage!
Excellent audio! Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Dave
Do you people really have to fight about EMD and GE? Its not like you are going to be buying one anytime soon, so whats the point? Just settle down and enjoy what both have to offer. Like things that don't matter to the railroads, like sound and looks. And things that do matter, like reliability and pulling power.
Some of us can and do work with these machines :P
Amen :)
I heard this, yes. Also, GE had problems with wheelslip on the B40-8's, simply because 4,000 horses was just too much on only four axles.
There were some interesting turn of events, that's for sure. I wish Conrail was still around!
Can you imagine an SD70ACe in Conrail Blue? I can. :B
😉
@@ctrproductions2033 TOO BAD IT ENDED UP BEING A GEVO lmao
@@SpeakerPolice I know lol
Got to love the start up of a diesel locomotive!
GE's mighty beast awakens
The sound of startup is one of the coolest sounds a loco makes. It's as if the beast has sprung to life.
well, I have to say GE's are really nice to listen to. Especially start up. I have heard EMD's start up. though my favorite EMD would be the F59phi. would be awesome to see one of those start up!
i remember the sound of the 7FDL's on C30-7's and the old 251C's from alco C630's in valle de mexico looong time ago,too bad the alcos are gone and the old GE dash 7 are being sold to brazil.excelent video man brings back memories......good memories
its always a good relaxing sound listening to a nice GEVO-12 motor idle
Good job man!
I hope you've been able to see the great power Q235 has been bringing us in Taft, SD70ACe's Ferromex, we've even had three SD80MAC's here lately!
Cool video! I just caught my very first startup the other day. Im finally able to go out and catch action in Taft Yard and videos put on youtube. I like the chug of GE's but personally I prefer the sound of EMD's
Love the hell out of that sound. Raw Power baby.
Wow not much smoke! Nice job, GE!
Gracias, esos GEVO siempre me sorprenden
I love these heavy machines!!
All i know how GE Engines sound & EMD / GM DIESELS sound. They're both awesome sounds! 😀
Totally agree!
They sure do, that's for sure. Almost like a beast waking up after a 100-year slumber. XD And yeah, that compressor is classic GE.
The trucks of the AH look a lot better then the other trucks to be honest.
Is it okay if I use this as a sound effect for a train animation I'm making?
Sure! Just credit my Channel name, and make sure I see :P
@@SpeakerPolice Thanks! You want me to send a link?
@@CraftyFoxe Works for me!
@@SpeakerPolice Here it is ruclips.net/video/d7J9YyaoHaI/видео.html
I am actually in the process of purchasing 2, EMD BL-2s and an FP10. So, yeah, it is pretty interesting to hear GEs and EMDs.
i love the shwa sound it makes
Shit I wish our GE's were as quiet as these ones. You can hear them coming from the next area code
Hahaha, louder is better! :P
SpeakerPolice Not when you live next to the railway lines and a 4 loco combo comes roaring through at 2am
ES44s are very loud.
I'd bet our old U-boat U26Cs are louder, built in the 70's with next to no muffling.
Here we have new Tier-4 emissions controlled GEVO locos (and EMD SD70ACe-T4) that we call "vacs" because it's so quiet, you hardly hear the engine rumble, just the whirring of air!
Man when that thing starts to fire it sounds like an eargasm haha
It's pretty amazing!
Great video!
At 1:25 'ish, that sounded like my old Plymouth Duster trying to start! LOL Great job!
They do sound pretty sweet. =)
Thank you! Soon, I will upload a video of one of these units going full idle notch in the middle of the night!
Thank you again 8D
She sure does! That's the sound of a big four-stroke diesel!
when it does start it gives us the good ol alco chug.
It was a great article! I am fond of the Y6bs, as well as the 4-6-4 Hudsons, J1e.
Good luck! ^^
They are awesome :3
They do sound nice. =)
I love the lopeing sound it makes when it starts is there any vides of a gevo lopeing idle
Wow, just wow. D:
You know that engine loves to start up. Love the smell of diesel in the morning
@flippy941 I am aware of that. It is amazing what these locos can move. Gotta love that power. Happy New Year from New Joisey.
Nice catch, thx.
Thanks for the info. I also learned that the 4,500 HP is capable of being made at 900 rpm, but that's only when it's not turning the alternator, under load at 900 rpm it makes 4,300 HP, and like you said at 1000 rpm it can make the 4500 HP.
Ahh, thanks for clearing that up. :)
You know the reason GE's tend to blow up is simple, because they use 4 stroke engines as oppose to an EMDs 2 stroke they generate less power, because of this they needed to find a way to make the out put higher, they put 300 psi turbochargers on there engines compared to an EMDs 150 psi and make about the same power, but a Ge's turbo is going to blow up twice as often. I prefer EMD but I do know a ES44AC is a hell of a low speed heavy puller.
Hoo man! Listen to that big ol' beeyotch crank , turn over and throttle up!
Not even steam was immune--several large steamers were built that ran well on flat rail, but would encounter serious problems on even 1 percent grades. I remember a TRAINS Magazine article all about this: 'Big Boy or big mistake?'. Interesting read!
I don't think another double diesel will be made, but for another reason: If you lose one of the engines, you've lost half your horsepower without the ability to swap it out for a new locomotive.
It is pretty cool. =)
Thank you!
I love this sound
It is pretty great :P
That is correct! A characteristic sound, found only on GE locomotives.
Nice video
Thank you!
Your Welcome
I'm loving it at 1:45... Whoomp! Only GEs!!!
nice!
*shivers*
Thanks so much! =D
ive been wondering how the oil system gets primed, especially for the turbocharger.
I like the EMD sound way better! The GE's always seem like they are struggling to crank and have that chug chug sound...Great video! Thumbs Up!
They actually run faster than EMD's (1100RPM in notch 8 vs. 900-1000 for an EMD), but the 4-stroke engine makes it sound slower. EMD uses a 2-stroke diesel in everything but the SD90MAC.
As a side-note, these EVO engines seem to start on 6 cylinders instead of all 12. Notice the pronounced thump-thump-thump for the first few seconds, then the sound becomes normal... well, normal for a GE.
Nice vid!
SPEAKER POLICE LOVELY VID WHAT A SOUND !
The Dash-9 and AC4400CW engines are in a "Moth Ball" Warranty on parts and labor, though they do have a new Engine coming out soon to replace their FDL-V16 in most of the Dash 7,8,9, and AC series Locos. GE has and will remain the Pride of the USA. They took the lead from EMD only cause GE caught on to the AC Traction Motor and already knew what to do with it and how to utilize it for best adhesion, and tractive effort. They will still service and repair the Dash-9 and AC4400CW and AC6000CW.
They are fun to hate, but also fun to like. xD
@Inline6boost Do you know how many or where these field units are going to?
I believe they do, although an EMD cold start can be almost as laborious. XD
I believe there is an oil pump that runs during the startup process. I know that on my CAT engines, the oil is simply moved up into the cylinders during cranking, but those are much smaller than a locomotive diesel!
I'd love to see one! Or a Chessie SD70ACe!
I totally agree, it is amazing how a GE can idle at 300rpm and sound so easy, like laid back with no care in the world :) but when you crank open the throttle to Notch 8 you best be ready for the beast from hell to come to life!! :) :)
That sound is the air compressor for the brakes coming on. The specific sound you hear in this video is a hallmark of GE locomotives, and is only heard on their engines. :3
They do have that low rumble and ALCo-like sound. =) I have never seen an F59PHI, all we have here are the P42's. DX
SIX SD45's? Holy cow, I would probably die if I heard what that sounded like. xD
Yup, that GE-exclusive air compressor xD
It sure does! =D
What about the Dash 9's and AC4400CW's?
CSX just retired all of their remaining Dash 7's. =( Some of them are going to Brazil. The ALCOs are some of the coolest engines there are =) Thanks, glad you like! I have some more FDL engines on my Channel including an idling B36-7 and starting C40-8W, if you're interested. (also an ALCo RS3 and S2 videos!)
Thank you muchly :)
Thanks ^^
This depends on age and model. Original 16-710 as in the SD60 were rated for 3,800 HP. SD70MAC is rated between 4,000 and 4,300 HP. Current generation SD70ACe is 4,400-4,500 HP.
This is an AC traction locomotive, and the sound you're hearing is actually the air compressor kicking on. But it is an awesome sound nonetheless!
Actually, I believe I have a few recordings of exactly that! I'll see if I can find one and post it.
GEVO is a portmanteau of General Electric Evolution, or ES Series, the name of the locomotive model.
Thanks so much! I agree, the GE's FDL engines are ALCo's at heart. Very similar designs and sounds! I heard that there is actually a computer program in the GEVOS that prevents them from smoking.
Soon here, if I can figure out these crappy new RUclips Channels, I will put up a video I took of me standing on the side of an idling ALCo RS3 with the access doors open. =D
I can help on that one. GE's Engines have an auto-Turbo system, It is supposed to spin off Compressed Air from the Tanks and rev before the engine starts. That is how the Startup of the turbo causes the "Turbo Caugh" sometimes the engine fires before the poor turbo can get any real speed to help with ignition..lol You can even get a Thumph" sound from the engine actually catching fire when the turbo engages. It is a rare but cool sound. and totally harmless.
what engine is in this thing v12 what?
Oh yes. The EMD's are even better. =)
Haha, I bet! I am a total gearhead, so I strive to learn all I can about big engines. I've worked on lawnmowers to locomotives and everything in between! x3
Yes, it was. I believe this may have been an autostart.
Oh Yeah! =D And thanks!
Yes The GE's from the Dash-9W all start on only 6 Cylinders instead of the full 12. They also rock back and forth really cool when starting up :) :) All like a true ALCO! :) :) Minus the Smoke and fire :P
That would be cool to see... =)
@SpeakerPolice Its not on the Roads yet. There is a Prototype and a few field units right now being tested
Hey, I didn't know that! Cool! xD
that ant no cho chooo thats a firkin freight nice vid
Turn your speakers up. The audio is AWESOME!!! 5/5* & Fav.
Gevos are really growing on me.
You're welcome!
why did the doors shake???
Yes, indeed.
