Glad to see CVA covering the basics...and wow, I cant believe someone could allow their plug to actually rust shut like that. Makes me wonder what some of the MZ rifles look like like that you get back in the warranty department.

You would be surprised what happens to some muzzleloaders. I once shot Pyrodex through one and didn’t clean it for the rest of deer season. That plug rusted so bad I never got it out, my gunsmith and another gunsmith couldn’t get it out. I gave it to a friend who was willing to buy a new barrel for it. I went to a Wolf and it’s so easy to break down for cleaning there’s no reason not to clean it

When I bought my optima about 10 years ago, the paperwork that came with it said use white hots pellets. DO NOT DO THAT !!! I use 100 grains Jim Shokey's gold, 2sticks. 50 cal. 195 grain power belt green base. 3 inch group at 100 yds all day long. Brush out the bore after 6 rounds, very little residue. White hots, 3 rounds all over the place at 25yds. Brush bore after 3 rounds, enough residue to make another pellet. Put alot of meat in the freezer with this combo.

If the Breech plug is clean, you should be able to see straight through it. After you have finished cleaning it, shoot a primer through the breech plug on an empty barrel. That will flush out any debris that may be left.

      What cleaner are ya using?
I've been using the "barrel blaster solvent spray"
      then just bore butter after.
It helps to have some pipe cleaner's as well though, that's honestly what I get the breech plug the most clean with.
After I'm done with that I wipe the outside of the metals with bow string wax and left it sitting for a couple months in a case and dont have any issues rust. Just gotta figure out what works for you. I leave a few oxygen absorbers in the case under the foam for good measure.

If you can get the threads on the broken spur out, a temporary fix would be a 3/4" stainless steel machine screw...they are less than a dollar at the hardware store...just make sure you get a stainless one and add a drop of Locktite so it doesn't fall out.
