At what point in recent history did Movado hit the deck in terms of quality of construction? Last five years? Last ten? How are you defining "modern Movado"?
I love my Movado Museum - I have no plans to sell it. I don't care if it's quartz and I honestly don't care that I overspent on it. It's a watch I've loved since I was 12 in 1986 and it's good enough for me. It still looks good to me.
My Movado was a little over $200 at their outlet. It's the prettiest watch I own. Yes it's quartz, but who cares? Btw, I saw the same watch at a retail store for $1200, lol...
I have five older Movados and I like the simple, classy look. I own an Invicta submariner knock off and several people thought it was a Rolex so personally I would rather get a similar looking watch and save myself $28,000
It's actually a compliment to Invicta. You can get a fully functional automatic invicta for $40 on their website. The Casio movement in those automatic invictas costs $20 by itself. It's a steal at those clearance prices.
Federico had me laughing so hard with his take on Richard Mille 😂 The only good thing about RM is that the ultra rich crave it so they stop hoarding Rolex.
I actually like the RM tourbillon pocket watch. But that's literally the only timepiece of their entire catalog that I've ever liked. It's also fun to watch, from the current recession, retail dealers offering 25% to 35% off RM watches.🤣🤣🤣
Richard Mille watches, Bijan suits, and Clive Christian fragrances… if there's a rich fool, you can be sure there’s someone there to bilk him out of his money.
Yeah, I have some Movado BOLD watches and some designer watches (Ferragamo, Calvin Klein.) I know horologists would turn their noses up at them, and I have no illusion they’re heritage pieces. They’re fashion accessories. I like the way they look. That's it!
The Movado Museum watch has been displayed at thr New York Museum of Modern Art. It perfected the minimalist design with just one gold dot on the 12 o'clock position. The gold dot signifies the sun, Egyptian God Horus, so it signifies horology and time. As a valuable watch, not so much. As a design excellence, yes.
@@ms.annthrope415 I really agree. and great story too! I didn't know that about horus! it really is beautiful from a design point of view. so well balanced.
How could you be so wrong about Movado is beyond me. You blamed Movado being iconic museum watch, and for the last 30 years not making any “innovations”:) Common, all wristwatches, except electronic smart watches, aren’t about innovation to begin with, because they are about tradition and classics. By the way, Quartz is already classics, and quartz concept resembles heart of a human being much more than authentic mechanical. Quartz also has just enough mechanical parts to be called mechanical. In my life experience Movado watches always were worn by very pleasant classy people, and I can’t say the same about Rolex wearers. With Movado wristwatch on your wrist you stand out from the crowd. I don’t have Movado and never had, but today am certain that I am going to obtain it.
There are a lot of guys like him, claiming that "Movado fell from grace!" and that they're "Chinese now!" Little do these clowns know Movado is still entirely made in Switzerland and quartz watches have been around since 1969. I recently bought a Movado and an older ESQ. The ESQ has an even better movement than the Movado- ETA G10 vs Ronda 712.
Movado is better than Rolex in my opinion cause some the way they look are very classy and slick. Certain ones make a person stand out. Rolex pretty much look all the same.
I agree. 100%. My wife had a little sum from money gifted her for her 50th birthday and wanted to buy a good quartz (Citizen) I insisted and now she is very happy with her new mechanical Tissot Ladies. Something that will last and will be a nice memory.
Love the candor! Totally agree, except I was gifted a Gucci Chrono roughly 20 years ago. Four batteries later still going strong and I've even taken it swimming a couple times.
Bought a gold Movado watch museum dial in 1986. Yes I was a nub. Cost me $500. I got 10 years out of it. When I learned and replaced it for a two tone Breitling Chrono Cockpit. I still have it, and it's my first of eleven nice watches in my collection.
Don't modern Movado's use ETA or Ronda quartz movements? I understand very few of them if any are mechanical anymore, but Swiss quartz movements are nothing to frown on, especially for under $300. 🤔
I still love movado, hublot, omega and anything vintage - Accutron etc. I love automatics but quartz don’t bother me. It’s preference. If you don’t agree, I don’t care. I will agree Invicta is garbage.
I disagree with the Movado being trashed as a whole. Most do have Swiss movements including quartz. But they have started releasing several automatic watches that are quite nice.
Movado is doing some pretty cool automatic stuff lately. Although I believe they are just ETA movements and overpriced. But if I had to have one I'd spring for an auto.
I have a museum classic. They use a Sellita SW200-1 movement. Based on the ETA 8424. Caliber 4 iirc. Movado automatics are class. Quartz movements are the ones to avoid.
Nah. Movado still works for those of us who prefer the minimalist aesthetic or have wrists too skinny to pull off a 44 mm hyper-masculine Time Machine bristling with pushers. Movado is pretty gender-neutral and I’m good with that. Everybody likes to dump on Movado and Tag. It’s just piling on.
Fed is always on point and I really enjoy his content. However, while I only buy mechanical watches now, I do have some old quartz fashion watches in the collection, Michael Kors and Armani, some of the first watches I ever bought, and they have stood the test of time. The build quality isn't that bad either for the price point. Because Seiko is a true watch brand it seems to get away with quality issues, misaligned bezels or markers, cheap 4R35 movements and hardlex crystal. I've owned Seikos (quartz and mechanical) and while many look nice I would take some fashion watches over them any day when you compare the cost. You see £200+ Seiko watches with folded links and hardlex whereas you could buy some fashion watches with sapphire and solid links for the same price
On the whole, I’m with you on these brands. However, I do own 2 Invicta’s both from their Vintage collection, so not like the ones you’re talking about. My 1953 may not be high horology, but the dial looks great, it’s functional, not expensive, and damn that NH35 inside ticks away at +1 second a day consistently.
Ouch!! Funny video 😂😂. Not going to lie I have a Movado actually several. Before I buy I made sure that it is a Swiss movement but of course you are right some of them have quartz movement. I have had a TAG Heuer that I like but there is something about movado's maybe it's because I'm 80s baby 😂
You have knowledge, you have wisdom and you have a great sense of humour, that is why as soon as I see you have put your next clip out there I drop everything and watch.
Theres a Movado outlet store close to my home. You can go there and find some left over last year stuff for literally 75% off their full retail price. With that said, how do you feel about Concord Watches, theyre a more luxury focused name owned by the Movado company. Same story in this outlet store, you can find Concords that were a few thousand, selling for a few hundred. From what ive personally seen these Concords are much nicer quality than Movado brand.
Re Richard Mille - "tulip fever" comes to mind. When people eventually realise that they've actually paid $1m for something just because they think they can sell it soon for $1.2m - but it's actually worth comparatively nothing - it will all come crashing down and will no doubt destroy more than a few. I hope anyone thinking of investing in that brand is watching this. You could quite literally be saving lives!
I agree. I own a couple of Movado bolds that I elevated by putting custom-made alligator 🐊 straps on. Movado started my watch journey, so there is a connection and no regrets. But I would NEVER purchase one deliberately again.
Haha my first cherished watch is a modern Movado. It was a gift though so I wasn’t aware of the price tag. Interesting to hear the general sentiment in the watch community! None of my friends are into the hobby.
Invicta was my gateway drug into watches. I wear my diver quartz all the time. I even have a few God awful ones like my Aquaman watch that is like 30 thick and 50 mm and weighs like a pound on my wrist but I love that thing. I then moved on to my Seiko SKX007. After years I recently bought my first luxury watch. I got an Aqua Terra with the blue dial.
Surely Rolex has to be on there. The only reason anyone buys a Rolex over brands with far superior quality and more reasonable prices is because everyone has heard of the brand. You only buy a Rolex to show off because even people who know nada about watches have heard of Rolex. The majority of non-horologists are not going to look twice at an Omega for example even though it's far better quality and value.
So, I’m not what you would consider a “watch guy”, per se. However, as a user and collector of guitars both new/modern and vintage, I certainly understand and appreciate the appeal. I also have a pretty good general sense of how product markets work, such as those which include vintage musical instruments/accessories, as well as complex, machined fashion accessories like pocket and wristwatches. As someone who understands the purpose and value of reproduction pieces, as opposed to that of cheap knockoff garbage, I fully support the efforts of those who simply cannot afford the $15k Rolex they desperately desire. But as a compromise, they can purchase the $1500 Swiss-made reproduction version of that $15k piece, just at a fraction of the cost. For those who don’t quite understand how silly they come across when they go out in public wearing a $75 “Rolex” within proximity of actual Rolex aficionados and/or timepiece connoisseurs and collectors…please take my word! And buy the real deal if at all humanly possible!
Gucci have their own manufacturing facility in Switzerland. From experience, for a so-called mere "fashion" brand, some of their offerings are quite well made.
Sorry, Federico. I disagree with Movado. It's an eye catcher, very well made, very comfortable to wear and affordable. I have some expensive watches and quite a few middle of the road types. And Movado tops them all easily. For exanple I have a Rolex DSDB which was covered in scratches after just a couple of weeks of wristtime. And it cost $ 17K to boost! I have a Movado Sapphire on my wrist right this moment. I've been wearing it for 12 years. Your video was great!! I totally agree with you. I was in tears with laughter watching your video. You have hit it right on the head. Keep up the great videos.
As a matter of fact I was on a cheap cruise one time and, sure enough, out comes the parade of cheap "exotic" watches 😂 Laughed like hell when you said that, more because It was the first thing that entered my mind.
Some of what you say about Invicta is true, however, not all. I received the Invicta Pro Diver last Christmas and was stunned that the seconds hand runs smoothly around the dial. At first I thought it must be an automatic or manual wind watch but on further inspection & research found that it uses the Seiko Mecaquartz movement! This is their upgrade from traditional quartz movements. I have two other watches that feature this movement. A Seiko Coutura and an AV-8. This is an outstanding jeweled movement which in my mind makes the previous quartz movements obsolete.
I bought and still own the Movado Museum when they were first released. Mine has the calendar in the 12:00 dial position and it is all mechanical. I paid $250.00 for it. I would love to know its value today.
I own a 52mm Invicta HYDROMAX Reserve (ref. no. 16969) in stainless/rose gold. I got it new for under $50. For what it is, it’s actually fairly accurate at keeping time. I wear it because it makes me laugh (it’s so large and unwieldy that it’s actually comical), AND I get a kick out of watching the veins on watch snobs pop out of their foreheads when I bust it out. I always get a chuckle seeing a watch snob pull his hair out, screaming, “WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU WEAR THAT!!!!!!” (Sorry, Federico) LOL. If nothing else, it works pretty well as a makeshift set of brass knuckles for when you want to knock someone’s teeth out.
@@diavalus my mate is a watch lover, but detests the geek part. Some guy started chatting to him about his Air King in a shop one day, not in the mood he just went "Yeah, nah, not sure about the build quality - I think the battery needs changing as it keeps stopping" 🤣
I had a Movado Gentry quartz with the Sub second dial from the early 2000's it kept good time but it failed the waterproof test, I don't really know if I would buy another in the future or not, because Movado watches are typically sold at lower end watch Boutique's or Jewelry stores.
Came out swinging and on fire!! 🥊 🔥 One thing to note that I’m sure has already been said 50 times…Invicta bought Glycine several years ago. So “technically” they do have many more good watches under their umbrella. 😬
I appreciate you. I was about to start a budget collection and then I found you. I thought about what you said regarding having 10 $100 vs 1 solid $1K watch and I agree with this conclusion. So yeah, I am grateful for your video.

Love my Movado and don’t wear anything else, I get frequent comments about how cool it looks.
Thanks Fed. I love your straight talking and agree with your list.
Your video was great!! I totally agree with you. I was in tears with laughter watching your video. You have hit it right on the head. Keep up the great videos.
As a matter of fact I was on a cheap cruise one time and, sure enough, out comes the parade of cheap "exotic" watches
😂 Laughed like hell when you said that, more because It was the first thing that entered my mind.
Fed we always like your honest videos and you are right..
The only invicta in my collection is the 1953 automatic. The only 1 I actually like.
Great commentary 👌🏽
Made me chuckle 😃
Movado has no innovation-but the Submariner of 5 years ago looks like the one I could buy today.
Lol. I love your attitude. You say it like it is.
Nice selection do agree ...I would add moons watch,
Wow, your best video in a while. I love how you are cutting the hard truth man. Keep it up!!!
Movado's value has plummeted? 😮 wow. I'm in shocked.
have to admit that the movado is a beautiful watch.
Ha, would be funny showing up at a geeky watch meeting wearing something like that and talking about its historical importance and other such things.
Agree with your thoughts on the RM especially!!
So where can I find these $23 dollar Movados?
I agree.
Very good and I totally agree with you on these brands. Also, quite a funny presentation! Thank you!
This kind of videos is the ONLY reason why I follow the channel.
On FIRE today!
Way to call ‘em as you see ‘em 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Came out swinging and on fire!! 🥊 🔥 One thing to note that I’m sure has already been said 50 times…Invicta bought Glycine several years ago. So “technically” they do have many more good watches under their umbrella. 😬
Or... they just turned the Glycine name to trash (like what happened to Movado)
Movado museum and Must de Cartier ❤
I enjoyed this video so much , you put big smiles on my face and made me laugh a few times . Thumbs up
okay i love the level of shade here, keep it up
I love my Movado Verso.
I still enjoy my gifted Movado from the late eighties. Good stuff F!
Totally agree! That JLC is a nice watch!
Excellent video Federico 🧿👏🏻
I appreciate you. I was about to start a budget collection and then I found you. I thought about what you said regarding having 10 $100 vs 1 solid $1K watch and I agree with this conclusion. So yeah, I am grateful for your video.
I have several Movado watches including the museum piece I love them and always get compliments
Love it Fed…you are on a roll today! Who wound you up?
The only thing good about Richard Mille is that he sponsors F1. I’ve always ways have heated Movado watches. So yea agreed. For the price of one Richard mille watch you can buy 12 beautiful watches.
Don't be silly Richard Mille is not a watchmaker it's an exercise in marketing to see how long can you water the sauce. And it worked pretty well for a really long time. The sauce is reaching Russian gulag levels of taste but eh money doesn't buy good taste.
Love this topic!
Soooo agree with you about Richard Mille.
Howdy Fed, much luv from WA... I agree with u 100%... The first watch company I taught my partner to NEVER buy is Invicta! And for the exact reason u mentioned..
Great comments Federico!
Love the honesty. Fed is just saying what we all have been thinking!
Hehehe, spot on!
I confes, I have a DW, but it's been off the arm for so long I recon the battery has begun leaking. And it got me moving into mechnical watches, so not all a big mistake.
Always love your Moser pieces.
And yes, RM is garbage given its ridiculous price tag.
Ha! One of your best videos of the year, Fed. Thx!
