    I often talk about "cartoon logic" for the importance for in-world consistency. Hilarious to see an entire game lean so far into the cartoon logic of RPGs in general by creating a cartoon RPG in specific. I instantly backed this.

      @AlexanderOsias Месяц назад +8

      It’s a rarely tackled genre in RPGS, to be sure. I remember the old RPG Toon! But this one looks like it’s delved deeper into the source material past and newer…

      @curiousmentalist Месяц назад +2

      @@AlexanderOsias I'd never seen Toon; looks like it's still available through Steve Jackson Gaming. I'll probably pick it up, too.

      On that note, while situationist sort of RPGs tends to be the ones we know as rule heavy, a game with a more narrative focused like this can have a lot of rules that support that sort of narrative. Though this seems to be going with pretty light rules. But the important thing is not how heavy or light the rules are (both have their advantage and disadvantage) but if it fits the theme. And this seems to play towards the theme. (This is also why I dislike people trying to shoehorn the DnD rules to do everything, when they're game systems specifically done to support the themes there often are going for.)
      I am going to have a look at this game for sure.

    Another point of reference that is more recent is Cuphead. A lot of people today are more familiar with that game/show than they are with the classic cartoons that inspired it.

    • @samim5140
      @samim5140 Месяц назад +2

      Sure. At the same time, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network are an incredibile source of great cartoons which in my opinion can be considered in a super cool modern descendants of the 30's cartoons.

    Surprised there was no mention of Coonskin or Fritz the Cat, which I think are even closer in genre than Cool World. Great review Dave, love how informative your videos are.
    I've been wanting to run a sort of dark fairytale in which characters are swept away into a 1930s film noir city where time is wibbly-wobbly and the PCs take on some kind of Ravenloft-ish dark power. This kickstarter comes at the perfect time. Would be super cool to add a side of town where the not-dark-power has released crazy cartoons into reality and they've taken over that part of the city.

    • @matthewelias7545

    With how rules light this is, I might string it together with TOON RPG which is a classic OSR cartoon tabletop game. Cause its got tons of random tables to aid with crazy and unhinged scenario building

    12:20 alot of the older fliecisher era and similar early cartoons that this is inspired are on this platform due to public domain laws, me and my gf watch them, popeye vs sinbad an amazing one that you can easily transform into a one shot. There's also cuphead , recently which while it looks cutesy : you're literally harvesting souls for the devil because you made a bad gambling debt.

    This seems like an RPG you take out and run in between your serious games when everyone just wants to f*ck around and have a crazy time with little worry about how one game will affect the next. Just making crazy characters, caught up in a crazy plot, doing crazy sh*t and just having fun. That's how I see this game best used for. The drawing aspect helping play reminds me of the Sketch RPG.

      exactly, this should be the way to play Helluva Town. Here a bunch of guys playing the rpg, this is one of the biggest Italian Twitch/YT channel, they are definitely NOT hardcore gamers, and yet they had a lot of fun (Italian language, sorry). ruclips.net/video/-j6mKMKkIck/видео.html

    you're right there absolutely some other toon ttrpgs (the one from steve jackson games being a more prominent example) but unless I missed it this is the first one to have a fleshed out setting like that. the others merely give the framework of acting out an oldies cartoon so this here makes headway for those wishing for a more solid basis to play their games upon.

    Remember those trace sheets back in school days, where you could choose between eyes, mouths, bodies etc. Well some of the more arty people in our high school made expansion sheets with more wacky cartoon bodies, eyes, arms etc. That would be PERFECT for this game, have a very own character creator. Where part of the character setup is to grab a pencil and trace your character together. This would allow even for completely none artist people to draw their own character perfectly and be much more invested in them than a pre select

    As a DM its easier for me to worldbuild using lunacy as opposed to realism, despite always wanting my worlds to feel realistic and believable. I love that this game allows you to completely embrace lunacy. Running this game I would include a death mechanic because then you can introduce things like cartoon hell, cartoon heaven, cartoon limbo, and gives reason for there being demons and devils just hanging around on the surface world. If theres perma-death then it can raise the stakes of some encounters and PCs can decide whether or not their fallen ally is worth travelling to one of the afterlifes for xD

    • @ZestonN
      @ZestonN Месяц назад

      Not Perma-death, it would defeat the whole concept of being a Toon.
      But, you could have Transitional Death, like you pretty much described. Giving the PC a chance to experience nuances of the universe.

  • @deedoublejay

    Looks cool, but I think the sex and violence will limit its commercial appeal.
    I got a copy of (un-snidely mentioned) "Toon" by Steve Jackson years ago. It has a lot in common with the concept and streamlined mechanics. I've never run it because I ran into the problem you mentioned of finding the "right" group to run it with.

    Could Pizza Tower work as a reference? I know it's based on 90's cartoons, but in spirit it matches the sheer anarchy and lunacy pretty well.
    A bunch of toons, facing off against an insane slice of pizza in overalls, so that parts of the town don't blow up from thier deathray.

    If the old cartoons dont help, there’s also those indie animations Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel. Think they have a different style to the examples you used but should fit well.
    By different style I mean that the animation isn’t like the old cartoons with cartoon logic and all. It’s not “altered by some substance” chaotic

    I'm going to coin a term now if it there isn't one already: Rubberpunk. Rubber for the so called "rubber hose" era of animation and Punk for its cynical adult themes.
    One thing that annoys me is that there are 4 color playing card decks, but most of them use green clubs, black spades, red hearts, and blue diamonds. I found a few variants that do use a blue club, but no yellow spades or green diamonds.
