      our natural state of being, pure mind, aware presence, 'this here now', christ consciousnes, bouddha mind, many names.

    Is having a teacher necessary to practice dzogchen?

      not necessary but you need a good understanding about what is pointed out, source, our natural state of mind.
      A direct, experiential knowing, rather than an intellectual understanding, the latter won't do it but can be helpful.
      Its called 'pointing out' when a teacher tries to introduce you to 'bouddha nature', many names refering to our ground of being.
      but if will get clear somehow if you really want to know/experience what this is about. its so easy and close to us in a way that we tend to overlook it all the time.
