I learned this song at the church my mother made me go to during a very rebellious season in my life, she decided maybe church would help me. I learned to play it on my guitar, and it became a family favorite as our family all drew closer to God. My dad went to heaven in 1988, he wanted us to sing him this, his favorite song. As we sang this to him, he departed for heaven. His last word was "Victory". Thank you for writing this song, I'm sure it was Holy Spirit-inspired. I am so blessed to have found this video; God bless you!
Wow. Amazing story about your dad. How great to hear his final word and know he entered into the Kingdom prepared for him. Thank you for sharing it here.

Thank you for writing such a beautiful song. The first time i heard it was on RUclips, with David Phelps, along with his daughters Callie and Maggie Beth. When i listen to their harmonies and the words, tears fall. I am 73 years old, and when its my time to leave my earthly home, this is one of 2 songs i have listed to be done at my funeral. Thank you again for sharing your wonderful talent.
You’re song has been such a ministry to my life. I actually sang it at a church contest in 1973. I was 16 and the song means as much to me today as it did 50 years ago. Thank you Marsha, and you, Jesus for letting me come to the water. ❤❤
I just found the “comments you have not responded to” button on You Tube. I’m so sorry I missed your encouraging words until now. Thank you. And yes, thank Jesus for leading us to the Living Water!!
I truly love this song, had those personal struggles for years. I would go out near the creek on our 20 acres and sing this over and over. What a beautiful God inspired song.
I just found this video while looking for the original one placed on RUclips to share with a friend. I played guitar and sang with my best friend 1970-1975. To this day....and I’m 63 yrs old now, and I still cry as my heart fills with the spirit. This song, changed this hippie’s life so many, many years ago. God bless you for the love and spirit this song has spread through so many years. I taught this song to all 5 of my now grown children through voice and sign language as 3 of them were deaf. It’s beautiful heard and seen.
I just heard this while we were rehearsing songs with my lady friends. I’d never heard it before!!! How could I not have? It’s such a beautiful song! Now this is a song I will sing. It touched my heart so deeply. Thank you for writing such a beautiful song.

Hi Lorie. I loved those coffee house concerts. Such a personal family feel. The song was surely written when God was overcoming my own struggle with depression, so you definitely heard my heart.
Back around 1974 or so, I went with my friends to your concert at Reseda Baptist and this song touched my heart in a significant way. I went home and learned to play it on my guitar and would sing and many times the tears would flow as Jesus took my hurts and pain and confusion away. Tonight I found myself struggling and I felt like crying and I remembered this song and found this video. This song was inspired by the Holy Spirit to speak to a generation during changing times. Wow Brigitte. What a story! I remember the New Life Singers. It’s wonderful to hear you have found your true self in Jesus and that somehow God has been good enough to weave our lives together this way. I’m grateful to be a small part of your story.
This song has remained in my heart ever since I heard it , about 20 yrs ago. I often sing it whenI sit inHis presence, especially the last stanza Jesus I give you my heart......and the chorus. I thank the Lord for equipping you to write this song.
When I was a little girl growing up in the Panama Canal Zone in the early 70s, my parents had all the Maranatha albums and played them frequently. We had home groups with music and this song was one of the most requested. Your replies to comments are so full of kindness and grace! I was really blessed to find this tonight. Just what I needed!
I don't usually pick favorites. This one, though.. is mine. I am 55 and praise Jesus, it's one of the very first songs I learned on guitar. Like the Lord, this song stuck with me through the hardest moments in my life. Now I sing it with such gratitude. Jesus changes us (when we let Him). Thanks Marsha. I was looking for a video to show me the chords and lyrics (though ask and ye shall receive), He literally not only never fails, He raises everything up a notch and here I'm watching the very composer! Thank you so much, Marsha. 🕊♥
Thank you for sharing your story and for writing this song. I have been singing it for years as it played a significant part in my conversion and early faith journey back in the early 70's. It has been a gift to the church that God gave through you - how awesome that He uses us in ways we can't even imagine! God bless you!
Wow, so amazing to find a video by the author of this song so many years later.... I sang this in youth group in the 70's, one of my favorites. Thank you so much for bringing us this awesome song!
@@ssbalm she recently “came out” to me. She hasn’t told a lot of people. I just told her how happy I was that she trusted me and told her that my best advice was to avoid haters and lean into Jesus. I wish I could make life easy for her. But all I can do is love and support her. And, by the way, I too was part of the Jesus Revolution and saw you at Calvary Chapel!
This is one of my all time favorite hymns....every word rings true! So grateful you wrote this and shared it with the world. What a beautiful soul you are!!! Blessings Marsha 💖
You are a born again spirit. That part of your soul that is connected to your spirit lives on. The part of your soul connected to the body goes to the grave when the body dies. It is not who you are. You are a spirit. You have a soul. You live in a body. Present you bodies a living sacrifice. Be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Submit to God, resist the devil and draw nigh to God.
I just got through sobbing for just got through listen to your song Because as feeling holy spirit had vision of Jesus Christ wearing crown of thorns crying in agony.while he's crying he is identifying with my sorrows praise God!😊💝💝💝💝
💕So touched by this. As a teenager I loved to sing this. hisband , who was then my boyfriend, and I loved to worship with this in our youth group. I havent heard it for many years until a few weeks ago we sang it on Sunday morning . My husband is now in heaven and I just know as part of that vast cloud of witnesses hes worshipping with me . Now our 11year old granddaughter is singing it this weekend at a gospel meeting. She has the voice of an angel and Im praying that Holy Spirit will use it to touch hearts and bring people to our Jesus. ❤🙏
Hi Barbara. I’m glad you had so many wonderful years with your husband. Your granddaughter sounds like quite a blessing. It was kind of you to write it about it. Precious of Jesus to weave us together this way!
Your voice is absolutely beautiful!!! This was my favorite song in church as a teenager! How amazing the countless lives you have touched all around the world! I had no idea the history of this song until I just found this today! Thank you for telling the story!
This is a beautiful song, i first heard in 1975 when a Christian group from USA & also from Hawaii brought in Samoa, I keep singing sometimes in my church, God bless
Wow this was one of the best songs that I was introduced to at MCC Long Beach California in 1981. I was new to being born again, and this song just spoke what was happening inside me. I haven't heard it since then, so it is a treasure to find.
I first heard this song in late 1971 soon after I, too, met Jesus. The song was a salve for my soul as I struggled to make sense of my inner chaos. Thank you for allowing yourself to be inspired by His love.
This has been my favorite contemporary Christian song since my high school years when I first heard it. This video made me cry. I loved your share. I’m so happy I found it tonight.
Beautiful song with beautiful lyrics....thanks for writing and posting. Written right from the heart! Fantastic song...... We'll be singing this for the first time at our little country church this Sunday. ;-)
You are a blessing Marsha! This is song is an inspiration, especially during this time of uncertainty, pain, and death. Thank you, and I thank God for you!
I am a UU Wiccan, and not Christian, but I have the utmost of respect for the honesty and sincerity and warmth expressed in your faith, and it has helped me overcome other messages from those more judgemental.
I'm glad I found your video, even though it's been around for a few years. I first heard this song at Bible camp back in the late 80's. It was always my favorite yet not many over the years have heard it. My cousins sang it for my wedding. I would sing it to my mom. She passed May 12th 2022 suddenly. She loved the Lord and I know she would have loved to had heard this video. I think my cousin will sing it again in June 4th for her memorial. She is holding my hand from heaven. Thank you for this song that has stayed with me for all these years. 💜
Oh Ash. I’m so sorry to hear about your mom. Mine died years ago, but it was a sudden death like your mom’s. SO hard. I guess nothing really prepares you to lose your mom. I’m so blessed that I could be a tiny bit of comfort for you. As my spouse would say “clever God.”
Last night I woke up about 3 am and the chorus came to mind as I was praying for a young police officer in critical condition, and for the families of those that passed, after a recent shooting . ... This was a song I often sang and played on my guitar as a teenager and the Lord brought the words of peace and comfort to mind. ❤ So wonderful to hear to sing this morning.
I was there, Aug 1971. That was my decision-Calvary Chapel. Pirate Cove baptism. I heard your song couple months after, and its always been one of my favorites.
Situations come up where our hearts get broken and I had never seen this video before. I am an awesomely impressed fan and I followed her career for a lot of years and I said it in the beginning and I say it again dot-dot. She is a beautiful woman with a beautiful Ministry and she is a beautiful child of God I'm so glad that God let me know her
Fifty years ago, in 1971, I heard a Christian musician singing this on a street in New Jersey. It reached deep down inside me and I gave my life to the Lord a few days later. This song will always be very special to me.
Sadly, I can no longer remember her name but I did stay in touch for a while. She had gone back to her home in California and I wrote and told her I had come to the Lord. Every once in a while, the Lord brings this song back into my memory. Without that song, I would have never hung around and talked with the group of people she was with.
I remember standing on the cliffs of Pirate's Cove in ~1970 with a thousand other hippies all singing this song as Pastor Chuck and others baptized dozens of us. It was something of an anthem of the Jesus Movement and I cannot listen to it without it bringing me to tears of remembered, confession and joy looking forward. I only wish that more people could know it and sing it and love it.
Shucks. I’m not sure why I completely miss a note like yours for a few months! Thank you for the kind words. It was certainly appropriate for baptisms. In the new Jesus Revolution movie you can see us out there on the beach playing guitars and a stand up bass and leading songs. (Fortunately we had very loud voices and everyone seemed happy to sing along!)
@@ssbalm Just know that you were a blessing to me and many, MANY others. There is no greater joy than knowing that the Lord has used gifts with which he blessed you as you return them to Him and share them with His people. I have to tell you that as I am writing this, I think the Lord wants me to remind you that He said: "you will seek me and you will find me if you seek me with your whole heart". Of course I don't know what that might mean to you. But I have learned to step out in faith and follow these impulses. Shalom Sistah !!
Good friends of mine sang this song at the funeral for my precious 5 yr old daughter. November 1978. I read and listen and cling to the words between October and December every year since.
I was in Amsterdam in 1985. Sang this with a group of women. Not a performance. We didn't try hard to harmonize, yet we did, and laughed and felt joy . Thanks for this song ✌️❤️
I first sang this song shortly after it was published when I was preteen. Sometimes a song will pop in my head and I will search RUclips and yesterday I ran across this post. Many times in my life I made excuses for ignoring certain passages in the Bible and continued with practicing sin. I learned that the Bible is our roadmap to live a Godly life. Jesus said that He did not come into the world to abolish the law but instead to fulfill it. I have and will continue to hold you up in prayer.
I was a teenage boy, when I heard this song first time, it was translated to finnish (Lupasit tulla). It was my lifestory and it went deeply to my heart! I love that song, and I play it, when I take my guitar. Both lyrics: english and finnish. That song contents all! Marsha, thank you and may God bless you.👍🇫🇮🎸🌹
Thank you so much for writing this song!!! I first heard in in 1977 when Al Ferry was doing Evangelistic meetings in the Port Charlotte SDA Church. It has been my very favorite Christian song ever since.
I'm listening to this as I edit a new book by a mutual friend in Palm Springs. Thank you for writing it! I first heard it when my mom took me to a Wednesday night service at Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa, in the early 1970s. It still has so much power to move my heart.
Got saved in the 70's and this song was always on our Christian radio then but recorded by another lady. I think her name was Mary Jo something or other.... Does anyone remember? She had a good many songs on the radio at that time and I erroneously thought she composed this one.
Great song when I was down in Houston Texas I was in a group called upper room voices one of the lady's in our group sing your song I work with a friend who plays piano we sing in Church's we was working on your song I live in Fort Wayne In. you are bless
Thanks for sharing. My choir in the Air Force never got to do this. The choir director, her three daughters and a guest pianist would sing this in 4 part harmony. In reality, it was so wonderful to hear them, even though the other guitarist and I would have liked to be part of this song too.
Yep, still the song that comes to me in the darkest hours ... it was the song that came to me as I was interceding for my partners' cousin, last night... he died this morning... his partner and mine were with him... she played him the you tube link I sent of the original recording, this morning... the Spirit moves in darkest hours... thank you for this song, x
Martha, we met rather hastily in 1970 when I first heard the song. I was attending The Salvation Army at the time (still do to this day) and when I first heard the song I knew I wanted to sing it at our Music Camp. Unfortunately, camp had ended about 2 weeks before when so I had to wait until Music Camp 1971. Camp began the first week of July that year and lasted for 2 weeks. I was finally able to sing For Those Tears I Died at soloist night. I prayed before playing it so that people would be able to understand what the song was about. The final concert of Music Camp the annoucments were made for the runner ups and winners of the each solo contest. My was for the vocalist section. A friend of mine took first place and I was kind of down in the dumps. Next thing I knew there were announcing my name as the second place winner. I received my trophy and I letter from the person in charge of the camp. Sitting back down I opened the envelope and read the note. He was proud of me because ten kids came up afterwards and gave their lives to the Lord...all because of the song I sang. I prayed for you as a thank you for writing the song and thanked God for using me in a mighty way. BTW, I fell in love with you when we met, but I had no way of getting in touch with you. I spent a lot of time dreaming of you, though. I still do, but I know I wouldn't have a change with you. Blessing on you and I will continue to pray for you and your ministry.
It's only been about 8 years since I stumbled on this beautiful inspired song and I still love it.Sometimes I feel His tears on my cheeks as I listen....I bet you wrote this 'as if taking dictation'?...Below is an example of what began right out of the blue not quite 10 years ago when I surrendered (but before I was baptized).I asked my pastor also "Why Me.I'm a nobody'".He turned and pointed at me and answered "That's why".I would be honoured if you would sing this. You can find me on FB,same name.God bless (Written to the tune of "For Those Tears I Died") The Sorrow Within You took me to places filled with sorrow, I survived for Your hand was mine to borrow, You gave me the words to write down their pain And my reward was I had nothing to gain, When tears fell like rain. Ch: Now they still don't know that You lifted them with Your love Nor that their loved ones are with You up above, For Your heart is pure, never knowing any sin And Your living waters will drown the sorrow within. You shared with me their tears that flowed from grief, And gave me words to help give them some relief, But then you opened wide Your holy heart And lifted me high before my tears would start. When loved ones depart. With or without me,they still need you there Jesus,I only write the words that you share To show to them who are in such despair That each of their loved ones are safe in your care, They'll find you in prayer. I love the whole story about The Jesus People...im not in that era but i love to hear all of the testimonies.... Lonnie frissbee must be so cool ....God really uses ordinary, unwanted hippy person to bring revival of a generation...the fruits are still here even in this era....very nice song btw ..i researched this song after i watch about lonnie's life story....that hippy guy is now in heaven
Lonnie was SO gifted and kind - and WAY younger than the guy in the Jesus Revolution movie. Save about 100 years in heaven to just get to know him! I think of him often when people say that no one from the LGBTQ community can “be saved,” because they sure said it about hippies too!!
@@ssbalm i'm not imagining the guy in the movie(Jesus revolution) LoL, al though i love the movie....im referring to a cool 19 year old lonnie frissbee on the kathryn kulman show old videos in youtube...it must so cool living in that revival era and seeing lonnie in person.

Marsha God loves you and wants you to turn from it. Jesus can save you from all sin. He loves us all too much to leave us in our sin. He takes us just as we are but He doesn't leave us there. We all have sin we have to turn from. No sin will enter heaven. "To him that overcomes to him will I grant to sit with me in my throne even as I also overcame...." You can do all things through Christ. With men it is impossible but with God all things are possible. Lucifer the highest angel in heaven was cast out for sinning. Jesus was crushed on the cross because of sin. We will not be held to a different standard. All must find freedom from sin. Sin destroys and separates. We can't take it with us to heaven. If we are still bearing the fruits of sin we can know that we do not know God fully. Many will come to Him in that great day and say Lord Lord we have done many great things in your name and Jesus will say to them depart from me you workers of iniquity. They were still under the power of sin. They believed they were Christians but were not freed to work for righteousness. We can be righteous by faith. He gives it to us as a free gift. If we love Him we will keep His commandments. You can do it Marsha, in His power. We are all in the same boat all in need of the same salvation.

I sang this when I was in high school, at a baptismal service on a mission compound in Quito, Ecuador in the late 70’s. Sweet memories. Thank you. ❤️
I love this Precious song and sang for many funerals and at churches Thank you for sharing brings many memories back but most of all wonderful message
Wow. That is so cool when just the Jesus Hug you need comes through at the right time. It was thoughtful of you to include me in that blessing!
I love that! Now you know the chords 🤗. Thank you for letting me know. I’m always in wonder at how Jesus weaves us together.
Thank you for the encouraging words!
Thank you for letting God use your talent! Countless souls were and are being drawn to the Gospel because of this beautiful masterpiece.
Thanks for this song.
this song touched my heart , as an alcoholic, 40 yrs ago, its a very special song, with a great message
Just sent this to my sweet granddaughter. She is a college freshman.
That’s very thoughtful of you - and hopeful considering we’re so old and she’s so young😊
So true for all of us 😊
I just got through sobbing for just got through listen to your song Because as feeling holy spirit had vision of Jesus Christ wearing crown of thorns crying in agony.while he's crying he is identifying with my sorrows praise God!😊💝💝💝💝
Beautiful vision - and so true.
I love this song, and I love everything you have said!
What a sweet thing to read today on my birthday! Thank you.
Thank you for sharing this song. It meant a lot to me when I was a teenager then, coming out of a troubled childhood. God bless you.
Gracias Marsha por esta gran composición. Dios le siga bendiciendo en su ministerio.
Eres muy amable. Gracias por la bendición
50 years?! Where has the time gone? I grew up singing this song, but never knew anything about you. Thanks for sharing! I am praying for you.
So blessed by this song. Thank you.
God Bless you Marsha...
Your voice is absolutely beautiful!!! This was my favorite song in church as a teenager! How amazing the countless lives you have touched all around the world! I had no idea the history of this song until I just found this today! Thank you for telling the story!
Thank you Patty!
This is a beautiful song, i first heard in 1975 when a Christian group from USA & also from Hawaii brought in Samoa, I keep singing sometimes in my church, God bless
The group I was in, Children of the Day, did a tour in Hawaii in 1975. My son was not even a year old then! Whoever it was, I’m glad you were blessed.
Wow this was one of the best songs that I was introduced to at MCC Long Beach California in 1981. I was new to being born again, and this song just spoke what was happening inside me. I haven't heard it since then, so it is a treasure to find.
What a sweet encouragement. Thank you!!
I first heard this song in late 1971 soon after I, too, met Jesus. The song was a salve for my soul as I struggled to make sense of my inner chaos. Thank you for allowing yourself to be inspired by His love.
Lisa Salazar yeah it was a sweet time
This has been my favorite contemporary Christian song since my high school years when I first heard it.
This video made me cry. I loved your share. I’m so happy I found it tonight.
Thanks for your beautiful song throughout the decades....
Beautiful song and lyrics. I pray for Marsha to return to faith in Jesus.
@@josephpino261 I always appreciate prayers! And the good news is that my faith in Jesus never faltered 💕
Love this song after I came to know Jesus 1972
Last night I woke up about 3 am and the chorus came to mind as I was praying for a young police officer in critical condition, and for the families of those that passed, after a recent shooting . ... This was a song I often sang and played on my guitar as a teenager and the Lord brought the words of peace and comfort to mind. ❤ So wonderful to hear to sing this morning.
Wow. I’ll be praying too!
@@ssbalm wonderful, a prayer 🛡️
Did you write this song? I was so happy to find it.
@@reneeskerry Yes. I wrote it in 1969.
@@ssbalm so special that I found you! Amazing to know what you wrote 50 years ago the Lord uses powerfully today.
A beautiful song that I heard in my Young Life group in the 70’s!
My all time favorite Gospel song. I sing it at all my gigs. Thanks Marsha for a great song!
Perhaps the very best from the Jesus movement. Thank you for this gift. Hallelujah.
High honor - thank you! It was a wonderful time to share our stories of Jesus’ miracles in our lives.
This song had a movingly healing meditation to our youth group who heard it in the Opera House Sydney
Thankyou so much.
This is one of my favourites. So I selected this hymn to be sung during my baptism service.
I was there, Aug 1971. That was my decision-Calvary Chapel. Pirate Cove baptism. I heard your song couple months after, and its always been one of my favorites.
This song has had a special place in my heart since childhood. And today I believe I found out the reason why & what God was trying to tell me.
And the message never changed. So glad you found God’s plan for you!
That is so sweet of you to share. Bless that musician in Jersey!!!
Thinking of you again this year as November rolls around. Praying for your peace.
@@ssbalm thank you.
I’ve been a fan of tha5 singe since my older sisters sang it in 1973. Thanks for such a meaningful song
I’m not very good at navigating RUclips, but I am ALWAYS grateful for prayers!
Marsha,
Finally see what you look like....love. Love this video. Have to sing your song again.....love you much.
I was a teenage boy, when I heard this song first time, it was translated to finnish (Lupasit tulla). It was my lifestory and it went deeply to my heart! I love that song, and I play it, when I take my guitar. Both lyrics: english and finnish. That song contents all!
Marsha, thank you and may God bless you.👍🇫🇮🎸🌹
Thank you, Esa. Sanasi merkitsevät minulle paljon.
Thank you so much for writing this song!!! I first heard in in 1977 when Al Ferry was doing Evangelistic meetings in the Port Charlotte SDA Church. It has been my very favorite Christian song ever since.
Thanks for this song!
I listen during exams. It gives me so much peace!
I'm listening to this as I edit a new book by a mutual friend in Palm Springs. Thank you for writing it! I first heard it when my mom took me to a Wednesday night service at Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa, in the early 1970s. It still has so much power to move my heart.
That’s wonderful! Who’s the mutual friend?

Got saved in the 70's and this song was always on our Christian radio then but recorded by another lady. I think her name was Mary Jo something or other.... Does anyone remember? She had a good many songs on the radio at that time and I erroneously thought she composed this one.
I was always THRILLED when someone else sang or recoded one of my songs. What an honor 🤗
Great song when I was down in Houston Texas I was in a group called upper room voices one of the lady's in our group sing your song I work with a friend who plays piano we sing in Church's we was working on your song I live in Fort Wayne In. you are bless
Wow. I am so blessed by the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives, weaving us together. What an amazing God we serve!
Thanks for sharing. My choir in the Air Force never got to do this. The choir director, her three daughters and a guest pianist would sing this in 4 part harmony. In reality, it was so wonderful to hear them, even though the other guitarist and I would have liked to be part of this song too.
Just beautiful
Thank you for sharing. If everyone only knew how much Jesus loves them just as they.
Wow. How kind of you to let me know! Prayers for your healing heart.
I’m so glad to hear it was a blessing to you and especially to the new Christians at your camp!
You can find me on FB,same name.God bless
(Written to the tune of "For Those Tears I Died")
The Sorrow Within
You took me to places filled with sorrow,
I survived for Your hand was mine to borrow,
You gave me the words to write down their pain
And my reward was I had nothing to gain,
When tears fell like rain.
Ch:
Now they still don't know that You lifted them with Your love
Nor that their loved ones are with You up above,
For Your heart is pure, never knowing any sin
And Your living waters will drown the sorrow within.
You shared with me their tears that flowed from grief,
And gave me words to help give them some relief,
But then you opened wide Your holy heart
And lifted me high before my tears would start.
When loved ones depart.
With or without me,they still need you there
Jesus,I only write the words that you share
To show to them who are in such despair
That each of their loved ones are safe in your care,
They'll find you in prayer.

What a beautiful recording. Thank you so much Joel! Foi tipo você me avisar!

"To him that overcomes to him will I grant to sit with me in my throne even as I also overcame...."
You can do all things through Christ.
