Magpul .223 / 556 "PMag" M2 vs M3 (Gen2 vs Gen3)

  • This review compares the M2 (Gen 2) vs the M3 (Gen 3) PMag from Magpul Industries. Both mags are stripped down and I take a look at the slight differences in both magazines. Both are great magazines however if you're using a European style AR rifle, the M3 (Gen3) PMag would be my preference.

    A weird thing to do is put the M2 mag and the M3 mag side by side. While holding them with one mag in each hand the one in your right hand will appear noticeably bigger then then one in your left hand. But if you switch hands then the one that was in your left hand will look bigger in your right hand. It’s weird. I’m guessing it has to do with the curve of the mag. Pretty cool little illusion tho.

    It's good to mark your mags, to note which one if you have a malfunction. Helps troubleshoot a failing mag.

  • @Thomistopheles
    @Thomistopheles 9 лет назад +12

    The indents are useful for numbering. If you experience a magazine related malfunction, take note of the number and swap in a fresh one. The number helps identify the problematic magazine later on when you have several otherwise identical mags in your dump pouch or range bag. My M2s have been marked on the floor plates, used a soldering iron to make small dimples.

    You might notice the back of the mags. the gen 2 has more of a V shape notch where the Gen 3 a more square and larger area for feed reliability. Also Gen 3 plastic dust covers won't fit the gen 2 mags because of this shape. Gen 3 mags are closer in design to military metal mags.

    6:24 see how the rear cuts are wedge-like on the gen2 and squared out and open on the gen3? that beveling caused the bolt hold open to protrude further up and cause wear to the bolt, hence the design change.

      In these incredibly uncertain times probably one of the best investments one can make is to buy as many AR and AK magazines as you possibly can and it doesn't really matter if you get functional surplus or low cost functional magazines of aluminum, steel or polymer construction. If Hellary actually gets enough people to buy into her lies REMEMBER what she has PROMISED and that is to institute eventual gun confiscation. First she will probably reinstate the high cap mag ban afterwhich the price of magazines for "evil black rifles" and "evil high capacity handguns" will start the ball rolling probably with some initial "grandfathering" of existing magazines. That will start the explosion of magazine prices so if you pay as much as say $10 for a gen 2 magpul on sale you can easily see them sell for $50 fairly quickly and those prices will with time increase exponentially. Of course keep enough for yourself (and some rebuild kits), but buy enough to keep your firearm owning brothers supplied. Bad times may very well be coming starting if the she devil becomes President in January of 2017. Orwell may have been 34 years late in his vision but it may very well come true faster than one can realize the nightmare. Another good investment is to stock up on inexpensive barebones AR lowers and build kits for both AR and AK type rifles. Also don't forget to stockpile as many high cap popular handgun magazines as you can. With Glocks try to avoid the Korean made ones but DO stockpile on the Magpul aftermarket mags as they are almost as reliable as the factory mags at half or less the price. The Korean mags for Glocks are iffy. Also buy up as many Romanian and even Pro Mag AK drums as you can. I can easily see them selling for more than $500 a piece in a year from now, perhaps more. If you are really well off or have a lot of money to invest buy as many decent AR and AK platform rifles as you possibly can. With the Ak's with few exceptions, avoid Century products and go with at least DDI. Our brothers will need QUALITY firearms. Remember the true purpose of the 2nd Amendment and it was established by the Founding Fathers to protect the citizenry from an out of control Government, one we will most certainly see if the idiotic voters actually pick the proven but not indicted felon called Hillary Clinton. She has already proven that she has no respect for the rule of law nor for the value of the common man. Bad times could be coming friends. PREPARE but first VOTE!!!!

      Reasoning is specifically for the M855 A1 military cartridge. Allows the round to feed much higher up in the chamber so the metal bullet tip doesn't destroy your barrel extension m4 feed ramps.

    Seems like I read somewhere that the gen 3 were best for the m855a1 round because I think it tilted the cartridge up a little more so the 855a1 round wouldn't eat up your m4 feed ramps.

  • @jellyhead7044
    @jellyhead7044 3 года назад +2

    You missed in important improvement in the M3. If you notice the area directly over the mag catch indent, the M3 has a bit of raised plastic where the M2 does not. This is a VERY important improvement as the mag catch on some ARs WILL NOT hold the mag in place regardless of the adjustment. Yes I have one AR where this is a problem where all others I own are fine. The problem is more with the lower than the mag. On the problematic lower, the mag catch recess is not sufficient.

      I bet there's probably WAY more than that.... Here in Maryland it's illegal to purchase, trade or transfer anything over 10rds BUT any capacity magazine is 100% legal to use and carry. Me and the 3 dudes I train with have over 50 magazines each, anywhere from magpul m2&m3, okay brand aluminum 20 & 30rd and duramag stainless steel as well as a few 40rd long boys and a few 60rd drum mags.

      The so called serious violent crime reduction benefits of the ultra-strict gun control laws of Australia and Canada is a bunch of nonsense fed to us in the USA. Although those countries do have gun laws much stricter than our own, they are not completely without guns. We don't have a gun violence problem in the USA, we have a human violence problem. Of course, citing that some groups of people are more prone to violence than others is blasphemy to those wrapped up in certain political ideologies. In order to get around the contradiction, it's just easier for them to blame the guns and direct their cohorts in the media to not report on the failures of strict gun control laws that they put into place in their state.

    Isn't the Gen3 Pmag developped to improve the compatibility with the original HK416 lower receiver geometry ?
    the fact is, Heckler & Koch released the HK416A5 (latest 416 gen), which use the original AR15 lower receiver geometry to insure full compatibility with ....Gen 2 Pmag.
    it seems Magpul and H&K should talk before engaging useless "improvement".

    • @tuck234
      @tuck234 7 лет назад +1

      It was designed mostly to be compatible with other rifles in general that use AR like magazines like the British service rifle SA80s and FN SCAR Mk. 16/16s. Every PMAG M3 has it labeled what rifles it's compatible with.

  • @conro7003
    @conro7003 5 месяцев назад +1

    Also heard that the gen 3s follower feeds m855a1 without scratching the feed ramps of ARs as much. It’s an exposed steel tip bullet so people were concerned about it. Do you know if this is true?

    • @TerminalM193
      @TerminalM193 5 месяцев назад

      Correct! The magazine catch geometry as well as the feed lip angle allow for cartridges to feed higher up, allowing the barrel extension m4 feed ramps to be struck higher up where the metal is much stronger. It's still perfectly fine to use your older generation mags for the m855a1 cartridge. You won't notice feed ramp damage unless you run litteraly thousands of m855a1 rounds which is near impossible to do for any citizen.... Hell, Ive sought out m855a1 for purchase for over 5 years now and have only been able to obtain just under 500 rounds, 100 of which was just the bullet that needed to be reloaded into my own brass.

    I think alot of people use the little squares to write stuff like .223 or 5.56 or BLK for 300 blackout. I could see that being useful if you've got a few rifles and you only feed one with .223 and one with 5.56. Just for safety reasons or something. I'm from Canada so my knowledge on the AR platform is very limited but I have a crusader arms temp 5.56 which is a ar180b variation. I believe the chamber is .223 wylde? Says 5.56 NATO on the bolt carrier when it's closed but I'm pretty it's the wylde clambering or however you'd put it. Plus to be able to keep track of malfunctions from mags by filling in the dots and as you run through your mag stock pile you could maybe find ones more reliable? I dunno just spit balling here.
    I just wish we weren't limited to 5 rounds :( that sucks. We can get p mags up here but you can barely use any of the space.

      It depends on where you live and what class of licence you have (if you're in Australia)… for example, these mags can be held under category b in South Australia, but in Queensland, you need a category d licence… but then if you had one of these mags limited to 10 rounds, it would be legal in Queensland for example under a category b licence… hopefully that makes sense?

    I only trust the M2 (window) PMAG only. Will not trust M3 due to shorter follower on one side, I've had rounds pushed out or mag due to shorter follower which can cause feeding issues. On the other hand M2 utilize the longer follower on both end as you see on video and it helps rounds to stay in mag when bolt is pulled back while mag is inserted in the magwell. Do the test yourself and you'll see the big difference in reliability.
