Honestly it's super brilliant because of it, Monster hunter loves to try to make things make sense from a biological perspective such as through evolution and Subspecies. So it's so brilliant that a Valstraxes wings are physically no different then the wings of other wyverns and elder dragons, showing how its still biologically related to other flying monsters, but still so different because of the shape the wings always 'default' into

Is it webbing though? Most wings have webbing to catch wind in order to fly but Valstrax is a rocket dragon, it doesn't actually use that webbing in the traditional sense. After studying its wings for like, 20 seconds, I've came up with an interpretation that may have some pertinence: the whole folding part is actually just one very elongated wing finger that evolved to fold this way and has those giant rocket-like structures growing on it, maybe a modification of the bones just before the articulations or something, or maybe mineralised soft tissue. Said rockets are held in place by the patagium (constitued of muscles and stuff) between them. The other fingers, that are fused together to make that strange growth before the rocket wing part help in holding the wing in place when it's folded...

What's interesting to note is that apparently evolutionarily speaking valstrax at some point evolved for its wings to be upside down. That's the only way for the anatomy to work. And as crazy as that sounds its happened in real life. Echidna are famous for having backwards feet as it helps them climb in and out of their tunnels easier.
To help anyone visualize it. When a bird flaps its wings it's the same as us flapping our arms. The palms are facing the ground. But with valstrax when outstretched his palms are facing the sky.

    • @frosthydra2971
      @frosthydra2971 Год назад +23

Thought that was not the case at first, but after self-checking for a while... If you take the exhaust side - and not the "claws" - as the tip of the "fingers", and look at this again, it might actually make sense... Or so I thought, because if that was really so then it can't really explain the laser/gun mode and perhaps also the hover mode, since the movement would then actually match the non-upside-down palm more than the upside-down one.
I mean, just try to visualize with your own hand (left hand, in this case, for better comparison), fold your arm the same way a bird or maybe a wyvern would, and you'll find that the way valstrax move its exhaust side from fold to hover or laser/gun is pretty much the same way we move our hand from "chicken wing fold" to a normal forward hand position. If the palm is upside-down, I feel like the movement would be a little bit more awkward.
That said, I don't actually know how the upside-down palm would actually feel like. But I guess there is one unrelated thing I can conclude: either way, the "thumb" would've been evolved in a way that would not follow nor hinder the "hand twisting" movement.
And also taking the exhaust side as fingertip would make more sense, otherwise the laser/gun position would feel really awkward, unless these wings have evolved in a way that removed such awkwardness.

As much as I love valstrax, I still always hated how the hell the wing blade maneuvers work biologically speaking.
The thing literally just has wing membrane stretching out to let this crap actually happen, which is INSANE because I'm sure we all know wing webbing ain't exactly tough enough to do that.
Also, it DIVES AND SLAMS THINGS WITH THESE WINGS AT SUPERSONIC SPEED.
How the hell does this thing even HAVE wing membrane?! They'd have to have More Shara-style rigid wing appendages that at most can stretch to reach really far, but for the wing appendages to just straight up basically slide along wing membrane to extend one after another, it just seems like the developers didn't even think that one through.
Like, this is beyond frontier monsters in terms of confusion, because frontier mons at most just have some odd shapes here and there, though they still serve a purpose more often than not. Valstrax's wings have WAY too much going on with them. They can rotate 360 degrees like an Owl's head, and sometimes even a bit more if they angle them upwards for certain dragon barrage attacks.
And then there's the fookin blade attack, I see that thing and it just destroys my last brain cell, what in the f*ck is this thing's flexible wing membrane made of?! That sh*t's just compounded muscle right there.

Ever since first seeing the big long stab in Generations, I've been baffled by how Valstrax wing anatomy works, and, the more I learn about them, the less sensible they become. After learning that the three branches of the wing end aren't connected to the arm, I had thought that that explains how the stab gets so long and only uses one branch mostly, but after thinking about it for an additional three seconds or so, that just brought up more issues.
If only one is connected to the arm, how do the others stabilize in regards to the anchored one when flying with actual jet propulsion coming out of the back of each? They're only connected by loose floppy bits of webbing in order to allow that flexibility to be able to spread while hovering and slapping, but also narrow in order to jet and spike the tips into the ground, but also... Slide? Shift? Whatever they do to allow for the long poke. But, also, since the one segment of the three that is connected to the base is the BOTTOM one instead of the top one, all the top ones should be drooping down at all times. Even if it is muscle that can relax and flex to change positions and rigidity, that means that Valstrax has to constantly be flexing at all times and wasting energy and risking muscle damage - potentially even tears, to a highly important part of stabilizing its wings and thus its flight - at literally all times while just walking around idly, not to mention how much energy waste and risking muscles has to happen during jet flying to hold them up against the drag of the air resistance and also brace against the force of its own jet propulsion.
Only one being connected also presents another problem. Valstrax intakes air through a chest vent to pump through its wings along with Dragon energy as its form of propulsion. So... How does the air intake reach the second and third wing branches if there is no structure with which to pump the pressurized air to there from? The only connecting part is the webbing, very small webbing at that, with not enough mass to really fit enough biological machinery to pump large amounts of air to there at high quantity or pressure. Especially when you consider the movement of the webbing during different attacks while flying or hovering, any tubing or whatever would either get compressed closed or kinked closed.
Being able to flip the wings isn't that strange, you could easily have a jointing that would allow for such a thing, especially since the musculature of these wings can be wildly different since they don't have to flap at all, given, well, you know, Valstrax. But the fact that only one is connected to the wing-arm just brings up loads of issues. And basically only for one attack, the long poke. And, the long poke could still be done even with all three branches connected to the base, so long as they remain individually flexible from where they each attach to the base, since Valstrax could flip the wings into the forward position and have one "finger" forward all the way out, and the other two folded back against the base, much like how human fingers work in a point. Or even just have all three of the branches flexed in such a way as to come to a singular point at the end. It's not like this would kill a lot of the attack's range or anything, since I don't think the poke has any more notable range than the big horizontal scoop or the slap down. And the real main threat of the poke isn't the poke itself, but the spin follow-up, which could be retained in either alternative poke method I mentioned earlier.
I really do like Valstrax being a jet dragon, I just wish his anatomy reflected it better. His tail is awful for being a jet. It's going to introduce drag without adding much for stability with its current shape. It should either be severely reduced like Shara's, or have the ridges on it capable of changing position to account for travel speed better, like how Legiana has a bunch of individual folds and flaps that can move independently to mimic air-plane flight control mechanisms. There's a reason basically every flying animal lost, reduced, or heavily modified their tails, and most modern air-craft also don't have any "tails" to speak of. If you have enough time to evolve jets, you have enough time to evolve better tail - that one would take way less time and way fewer specific adaptations. Also, Valstrax's limbs do NOT look like they'd be good enough at absorbing shocks from the insane forces that Valstrax would have to put up with. Not a chance. They're small, which could be fine if they even remotely had some design suggestion of a unique musculature or flex points or anything, but they don't, they're just generic legs.
Also. Just a personal point of contention of mine. I absolutely hate the attack in Rise where Valstrax is hovering and then just... Holds its wings out in front of itself while they crackle with Dragon energy and it just... Drops down and sets them on the ground. It doesn't slam them down, or clap them together, or swipe them into position. It just kind of... Sets 'em there. It looks so bad from a life-like animation perspective. There's no over-shoot or follow-through or even much in the return to idle, its so stiff and illogical. It would not make sense for something to exert force this way since it's so inefficient at transferring that force into the target. Even if you wanna' say all the force is from the Dragon energy exploding and not the wings coming down, one, why would it not bother to also slam the wings down as another vector for damaging whatever it is trying to kill, and two, why does it set its wings in a position they never are for anything else? They're both completely cupping together under-handed. That position showing up nowhere else makes it look off from what the creature seems to know its own optimal use of its anatomy is - much like the issue with the far poke. It could easily do this exact thing with this exact hit-box with the laser cannon wing position, or the missile launch one but with the wings closer and in front of itself, or the over-hand it uses for the somersault scoop, or the wing slap down, or some new wing clap animation. The one they chose just looks like a kid articulating an action figure one bit at a time, not a living - albeit fictional and ludicrous - animal.

"According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a Valstrax should be able to fly. It's arms are too small to carry the engineering nightmares it calls wings, and the G forces involved in it's flight would tear them apart. There is no food in this or any universe with the energy density required to keep it airborne for more than 2 minutes without eating, and the energy released when it does its signature divebomb would be enough to vaporize it's entire body, along with everything else in the area.
The Valstrax dive bombs hunters at supersonic speeds anyway, cause it doesn't give a flying fuck what humans think is impossible."

I was always so confused at how Valstrax's long distance stab or roundhouse slash worked. The fact that he uses webbing/connections between jets to fold and unfold his wings is a big revelation
I mean, it's fitting. One of my absolute favourite animations is actually not when Valstrax dives from the skies (it's one of the coolest moves in MonHun history, don't get me wrong), but rather when he simply hovers in place with his wings pointed down. He just points and rotates his six jet boosters so precisely to stay perfectly stationary, it's mind-blowing
