- Surviving Paradise: The remote tropical island nation of Kiribati holds a dubious honour: it is predicted to be the first country to disappear as a result of climate change.

“Every year the land loses about 1.5 metres. Every year”, laments Boobu Torobimo, who has lost three houses to rising sea levels. Despite the evidence, many residents do not believe these claims, instead having faith in God’s promise to Noah that there will be no more floods. “Only God can tell the future”, says Presbyterian Soama Tafia confidently. There are those responding with positive action, for instance by planting mangroves along the shoreline to resist against flooding; but former Kiribati president Anote Tong fears it will be too little, too late. “It’s going to happen, and it’s going to be on a massive scale". His lucid speeches to the UN, imploring the world to address climate change, won the nation exposure but regrettably little action. There seems only a slim chance that Kiribati will remain inhabitable in 50 years’ time.

Many people comments here need to understand that Kiribati people are very positive, they are naturally happy, layback people. And they don’t have much resources, I’ve been there, the container ship only comes to every month (sometimes will delay) it’s almost impossible to have fresh milk, many vegetables sells in the market are moulded or looking bad. BUT the people are still happy and seems satisfied with what they have ( like catch fish their own) The American girl where she lives is almost seen as one of the rich houses. So as the schools are one of the nicest buildings, most of them live in their traditional house that build from leaves. And lots of people sleep in the same one. To me, the way they deal with it is to live the way it is and to believe in god, because even if it’s going to have climate change ,what else can they do? They have tried to grow more mangrove to reduce the erosion. MOREOVER, they are proud to be i-Kiribati and their land just like the women in the end of the film. It will never be the same to live as a refugee in other countries. I can understand their feeling as I am an immigrants now, and struggling to gain my social status back as I once was in my own country,
I would also be happy an smiling there.
I think these people have a beautiful spirit! God willing someday I will practice midwifery on this island, it is my dream! P.s. you should not mock people's faith that is what makes them amazing!

even as Christians we shouldn't ignore the fact that we're going underwater soon, and i supported Mr. Tong in his statement. Since climate change is holding our lives on edge, we must have faith (as Christians) and work our intellectual abilities to think of actions regarding this issue. We can't expect good things to happen without putting in efforts.
Even us non-christians need to work our intellectual abilities to think of actions regarding this issue;-) All of us need to. But thanks for a very clever comment! Some religious prefer to just pray to and trust in God instead of taking action and fight issues.
Dear I-Kirbati, there was a man in the sea because his boat sank. He was getting tired and began to pray. Then a boat came and the was offered a ride to his home. he declined saying “don’t worry about me. I’ve prayed to god for a miracle”. The boat sailed on. This happened two more times and the man refused help again and then drowned. Upon reaching heaven,God asked the man why he didn’t get onboard the three boats he had sent to save him. I hope the mangrove planting works for you. If not I hope you get good offers to live elsewhere. I wish for the best for you.

I'm one of those Kiribati people that believe that Kiribati is not sinking but Instead it was expanding. And I'm saying that because of what I've seen or grown up with while living on a Coastal area.

They could import waste products like used car/truck tires to build with for absolutely nothing, an exporter would even pay for the shipping costs, fill these with sand from offshore dredging and then grow mangroves or something to tie this construction together to build things like sea walls or by raising the hight of individual villages one at a time.
Or they could move to one of 50 other islands. South Tarawa has 50,000 people now. All of the islands had only 2000 one hundred years ago. They lived in huts made of palm leaves.
Whatever these Dutch bigots say; if you dredge sand to build a freeway on to a of the sea in an archipelago - you need to maintain it.

What evidence do you have to say it is not global warming? You can raise the height of a village with a substrate of tires and mangroves, you do not have to maintain it anymore than a village at it's present hight.
Well I personally disagree with some of their information... That bridge was build that way for a temporary crossing road since the main bridge broke... So it's not washed away. These Imatang needs to correct some of their information.

It is sad that man refuses to acknowledge the truth. A proper assessment of what is causing the water intrusion on the atoll is not rising water levels in the ocean, it is land erosion. Also the publishers of this article have an agenda, Europe and other highly industrialized countries depend on sales to under developed places to export their over priced technologies. There are numerous contributing factors that causes unexpected results in the weather, strong tides results from storms at sea, and the biweekly neeptides. What people do not tell you in this type of documentary is that people alter the natural boundaries by removing large quantities of coastal sand and remove coastal trees and call it 'development', without taking into account the negative effects that result from their ignorance. The sad fact is that the former world Pirates who stole so much of the wealth from other peoples lands are pushing this lie for their own benefit. They call themselves 'The Experts' and their victims chime right in, agreeing with their lies. There is no CLIMATE change, because climates do not change. However, weather changes constantly and what did not happen in fifty years can happen now, and that is what you are seeing. There is no 'Man Made' global warming, there are numerous contributing factors that interact constantly to maintain conditions that promote life on this planet that an INFINATE God has created, without the aid of puny little man! We must take into consideration what we do has consequences and act sensibly. But be ware of liars who themselves have been fooled and seek to make fools of us all. Get to know the God who created it all and placed us in charge of taking care of this world, there is no other habitable place out there; NONE! The answer to our problems are in how we relate to God, who says "in all your ways acknowledge HIM, and He will bring it to pass". And 11 of those Island atolls were owned by the United States military. 1935 to 1975.. Now the 11 island atolls are owned by both Kiribati & US gov.. To visit these 11 Island atolls you need special premissing from either Kiribati or US.. One island in particular, is Gardner Island atoll where Ameila EarHart crashed.

It infuriates me when people put their comments saying these people are ignorant and that they should be moving. Know this for a fact: some Kiribati people have emigrated. Thanks to New Zealand, many families have called NZ their new home. The harsh reality is that these people are located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and they cannot just pack up their bags and go elsewhere. First, they need to build big voyaging canoes like the ones their ancestors used to have. Also I do not think they possess the knowledge to build it any more. Second, if they do have a means to leave their islands by boat, where would they go? All places are occupied by other people with their own form of governments and immigration laws. THEY HAVE NO WHERE TO GO EXCEPT TO COUNTRIES THAT INVITED THEM.
They need to send the engineers that built the palm tree Islands in Saudi Arabia out there to help those people
The simplest and immediate cost effective solution is Mangrove walls. It can prevent at least parts of the country from completely washing away.

There's a place in the Philippines where everyone lives on top of the water, so it should be possible to survive. The challenge is how to build an infrastructure that will resist storms.
True... But these people live in the middle of the Pacific, thousends of miles away from any land resource. All they can sell is fishing rights. Even if the industrial powers would give them 50000 boathouses, they would still depend totally on the outside world for materials, vegetables and fuel.
It's caused from the ocean dredging the sand to make roads, houses, everything down to the phones people use, the ocean floor is being cleaned out which causes flooding in some places where other places they are seeing the opposite.
Islands erode away and also build themselves up from nowhere all over the planet. Check out the islands that appeared off the coast of North Carolina.

Sea levels aren't rising. I lived on an island most of my life. It's been 4 feet above sea level since they first measured this several decades ago. And it's still 4 feet above sea level today. Hasn't changed an inch. The only thing changing the island is erosion, which has nothing to do with global warming or any supposed sea level rise.
Just because you haven't personally seen it doesn't mean it's not happening genius.

Looks like paradise . All those roads that have been built to link up the islands will have an effect and contribute to the changes to the island . It changes the sea currents and as the island is basically a giant pile of sand sat on coral it’s easily washed away
Hmmm - islands have been known to sink and rise with changes in plate tectonics including magma shifts under earths crust. And islands erode with changing ocean currents, storms, winds (especially when they are made of sand), and coral comes and goes with pollutants etc. I doubt very much there is a measurable change in sea level, but that is the premise of the film. I think this is just more climate change scare propaganda.

I'm not religious but I do think abortion is a terrible thing. I believe in climate change, mostly due to solar influences, but I don't believe it is measurably influenced by "green house" gasses. Man-made climate change is the substitute religion for many that are not religious but I'm not gullible and many fools on the left and right believe it. You know how stupid these "environmentalists" are? They will protect a nest of eggs because those eggs are deemed birds, yet they deny a fetus is a baby. Have a nice day!

The climate has been changing since time started rolling. Nobody denies that. What people deny is how much of an effect CO2 has because the data has clearly been altered over the years.

Such a beautiful people.. I weep for their islands and religion was made to put fear into peoples hearts and minds so they could be controlled.. too bad.. Which country will accept them when their beautiful island becomes uninhabitable? Will it be Australia? Or will it be another country like PNG or Vanuatu? These are the international discussions that need to be had very soon, so a 15-20 year voluntary emigration program can begin.
If China can build islands in the South China Sea, I'm pretty sure these people can build a wall or barriers to keep water out. I just think they don't have the budget for a project like that.

Good job on filming this! It is easier not to think about climate change but in order to help with the coming changed you have to be aware of it and talk about how to help. I hope they stay as long as they can but I hope they've made plans for when they do need to leave. Omg! On mormonism being there....now I understand why so many of them won't listen. This is a very patronising and condescending documentary making judgements on how the people of Kiribati view their situation. The last thing you need is some white boys who live privileged lives in the Europe that was built from exploitations of indigenous people all over the world and the theft of their resources to make judgements on how Kiribati people's understanding of their situation. Europe industrialisation created this if the theory is right, the least they can do is help understand and even provide some alternatives for Kiribati people to move to. But non has put up a hand. These people are still making money from the plight of indigenous people...

America built the fixed assets which change the way the sand banks can move.
It's been solidified by the foundations for the road. And making that road needed lots of sand dredged out of the sea nearby which causes other sand to fall back in the hole.
All just to serve an American military base in their continuing global war of greed & expansion..
