As someone who's art style has gone from (very anime), to realistic, to (heavily inspired by another artist), to cartoonish and back again I think putting too much pressure on one's art style and trying to make it stay consistant and recognizable can stagnate growth as an artist. Never feel afraid to challenge yourself and try new things.
Yes the basics are important. I had an art teacher who once we finished learning the basics of anatomy and completed our assignments would let us work in any different style or art medium. She even let me submit work digitally or traditionally. I even learned a bit about animation in her class. Other students didn't bother trying anything at all and either failed or had horrible grades despite her being one of the few teachers I had who marked assignments based on how much effort the student put forth instead of what style or medium they used as an artist.
yeah, i agree! i've always had an anime art style but lately i've been doing more (western) cartoonish and also a bit of realism. i also think it's important not to confine yourself or any artist to just one style! you can do things with one style that you couldn't do with the other, and part of being an artist in my opinion is expressing yourself and/or your ideas in whatever way you want!
It's also okay to use a different style when using different mediums. I always use a different style when animating compared to digital art or traditional art. Sometimes you may have to alter your style to fit the situation. (or your client's vision, if you are doing art commissions)
Lapist Macir That right there, kinda scares me. It's like I finally found my style and then some people are saying it's looks low quality and when I go back to being inspired by other artists, they'll flame me. I'm still learning the basics of everything but I fear, I may run into that problem one day.
An art style is an abstraction of realism. The saying "You have to know the rules before you can break them" applies here. Your style is defined by the details you focus on, and the details you choose to leave out, all in order to get your desired effect. Every cartoon creator and popular artist has learned realism at one point, because that's how you learn the fundamentals of art.
@@HYPERxSONICxFANx2012 That isn't exactly to say you haven't picked up on realism. Body proportions are learnt through proper referencing even if not noticed at first. You brain realizes how the body is shaped and structured through repeated practice and efforts. Even if you claim that you can't achieve realism, you are slowly but surely incorporating it in your art, though simply modifying to fit your style. Most anime artists start off with wonky proportions and lackluster body shape, but as they reference the appearance of the body, they learn to modify the actual appearance of the body to fit the style without looking distorted. It's one of the simple ways to tell a good artist from a lackluster one.
@@HYPERxSONICxFANx2012 I have the same problem, though not as big as I used to. I've been practicing anatomy, perspective, figure drawing and proportion and can tell it's improved my drawings a lot. But God everytime I say "I'm gonna draw something realistic" I just end up taking what I see and stylizing it instead.
The artstyle is like handwriting. The basic drawing knowledge (anatomy, perspective, color theory, etc.) is like grammar. You can bend the rules with how you write, but you can't bend the rules of grammar. No matter what, a grammar mistake is still a mistake and will ruin the look of your sentence.
@@bur_n_t People still use abbreviations? Stop annoying people on the internet and do your chores (also you should of used a question mark (?) Instead of a period (.) In your first sentence)
@@a_reelskitface If you really want to be so nitpicky about punctuation (and btw, a period is not incorrect since that could have been a rhetoric question or a statement), at least get yours right. You didn't use a period at the end of the sentence which is like the biggest punctuation mistake one can make. Not to mention the usage of "should of" instead of "should have", it is beyond me how someone complaining about grammar or any kind of poor writing can make such a mistake.

@@a_wanna_be well, it depends if you're trying to make it look off. it's also pretty lazy and unhelpful criticism if they don't tell you why it looks off.

Non artists have every right to critique artwork, even if they know nothing about it, but it's usually not very helpful because they can't actually explain anything to help you improve, or just blurt out random bs to try to sound like they know what they're talking about.
@@feathersong5838 well, they can help spot the mistakes, but since they dont know too much about art, they cant use the right words for it like anatomy for example. instead of saying "oh you need to work on the anatomy of the arm", they'll say "oh the arm is too big down here" . even if they dont know a lot about their art, its not hard to tell when something looks off which is why theyre still somewhat helpful.

What I hate is when someone says: "It's just my style" as an exuse to not get critisism, I understand if you're not feeling up for it or don't like it but say that instead of saying "It's just my style". One time I said this to a person "Hey this is really well made but in one part of the drawing I can't really see the line-art. I recomend having a darker colour so it fits the rest of the line-art since that's darker." their reply was "It's just my style" then later they decided to delete my comment and their own comment. This was a person I looked up to and who started my style, to get that comment from that person made me looose respect for them. I still follow them but I don't really comment that much on their posts anymore.
This is something very common from the artist community, they can improve even in their own style themselves depending how the work is done. My biggest cringe goes with the use of Ad Hominen to avoid criticism, like "I studied with professors", "Im a teacher", etc and they feel like nobody can criticize them. :|
I hate when someone says it's they're style But when it belongs to someone when they gave credit. I have a chibi art style but it's not mine I just like drawing it.

By the way, those of you who are FREAKING out to find an art style. I got to college and majoring in Animation and Game Development, having an art style is actually looked down upon. Not being flexible enough to meet any style, and being locked into one style is actually very detrimental to your growth as an artist.
@@woahwoahwoah7530 those don't fit much in the "horrible anatomy" it's just stylized, but it still looks real. But if you excuse your hands having the thumbs in the wrong way such as it not pointing to the body when it's waving as "it's just my style" then you're wrong and *that* is an actual anatomical error.
imo you can't "find" an art style. you develop it during your art journey by trying different things and looking at your favourite artists' art and TAKING INSPIRATION (do not copy, jesus pls) from their art and applying the things u like the most to your own art. just keep practicing and you'll notice both improvement and consistency to show!!
Alfonso Razo you're kinda right! practice won't do any good if you're practicing something wrong for the whole time. that's why it's also important to do real life studies and use references~ and about the inspirstion thing, there are many things you can get inspired by! you would be surprised what can actually bring you various ideas, that's why it's good to always carry something where you can write those ideas down ^^ i don't think anyone leaves their house without their phone nowadays, so it will be easy to write down ideas as soon as they come~ one of my favourite artists said "you know the saying "think outside the box"? bullshit. there is no box. you're on an open field, with ideas floating all around you. and you have a butterfly net! you just have to catch those ideas before they float away" and i couldn't agree more ^^
Kibitzer ah sorry for not making things clear^^ of course i meant not to steal other people's artwork and claim it as your own, but also - copying art and/or styles may be beneficial to the artist, but only to a certain extent. every single artist is still improving, no matter how good they are, and if you choose someone who's still in the learning process then you'll most probably make the same mistakes they do. i think learning from real life things is better ^^ of course, i can't say it's easier, but it certainly helps you notice the mistakes faster.
I used to trace coloring books pages when I was in first grade cause I liked the art, but I did that twice. I then started to *really* get into art when I was in third grade. I practiced nearly everyday, and looked up RUclips tutorials, and I started getting better. I would look up cute pictures on Google. My current art style is a mixture of semi-realism and anime. I'm proud that I can say that I'm self taught, and even prouder that I stuck to something so complicated. Even with all of that I'm still learning and practicing. Of course I don't like my art style much, but I'm working to improve it! 🤓
the handwriting analogy actually works really well. messed up anatomy isnt an art style because its like how you have to learn to write each letter before you can make you handwriting pretty if that makes sense.

Asterbel Music my old art style was bad... like... the style WAS bad. It's as if I was trying to make it bad on purpose.... I was in grade 2 though... but still it was very very bad...
I honestly am so tired of hearing the word “style”, and I don’t think it’s healthy for new artists to dwell on it so much. Just draw what feels natural to you at first and maybe make more personalized choices later, but I think it’s more important to understand proper proportions and anatomy than to focus on just having it look “unique”. Trust me, if you spend enough time drawing, it’ll begin to look unique on its own.
ccbella I don't like Big Mouth either, but it's not because of the art style (goddamn is it ugly). Never really liked shock/gross out humor, I often compare it to jumpscares in horror movies/games, both are cheap tactics used to surprise people and catch them off guard. I always find myself rolling my eyes after hearing jokes of the sort, and quickly drop shows that rely heavily on shock humor.
Art styles have become more important to people than they actually should be. Art styles are needed when creating a comic or cartoon show. I think they are developed as the artist develops.
When I hate an art style: * is silent cause I'm in no place to judge how people draw their art and I can't criticize something I don't understand fully * When I like it: * makes gentle constructive criticism while going on about the art and how it works really well *
For everyone who draws in the Powerpuff Girl art style, that’s perfectly fine, but the big eyes and fingerless hands are not actually stylistic choice. The Powerpuff Girls actually look like that compared to normal humans because of how they were made in the guy’s basement.
if those features were chosen to signify their difference to normal humans THEN IT IS A STYLISTIC CHOICE. what goes on in your head to think like this?
I don’t think that art style theft is a thing just because there are so many art styles that are so similar. Aka the furry art styles or anime art styles heck even my little pony art styles even ppg art styles.
what i don't like is this one artstyle hovering around, mostly teenagers between 12-15 years old who all mysteriously question their sexuality adapted it, who are part of some fandom (most of the time musicals). You know the one I'm talking about. "Thiccness", sometimes big lips, roundness of the entire body, big eyes and weirdly overpresentated eroticness or depression.
evesning I mean im not an amazing artist, and I still have a long ways to go with anatomy, but take it from somebody who fits within that age spectrum. More rounded characters are easier to draw, skinnier characters require better knowledge of the bone structure. Of course there needs to be decent knowledge on both end, but "thiccer" characters have a lot of, well "thiccness" around the bones. It can be more curvy, less defined. : )
Pretty sure that particular style came from Steven Universe, since it's the 'progressive' in-thing right now for teenagers and the cartoony style's very easy to copy. American children's cartoons are also popular to watch now in some circles and most of them feature very exaggerated eye sizes. Teenagers are teenagers, so they'll of course draw some really lewd stuff. It's also somehow become popular to project one's emotions onto characters and draw them with self-harm scars or crying and the like, or to joke about not caring about anything in life.
evesning (not trying to be like "huhuhu im special", but) I'm 13 and I still practice body shapes, and I don't draw lewd and/or edgy stuff, and I can't draw thicc lips ;-;
This is a seriously good video for being so short. Honestly you have great opinions about art and it's refreshing to listen to someone so against the "everyone is great at their own style" mentality. You can't be great if you don't learn, and you can't learn if you don't listen.
A little pet-peeve I have with these art style comparisions is that whenever someone draws a character in the Powerpuff Girls artstyle they always draw them as a Powerpuff Girl and not as a regular character from the show.
The evolution of this channel is great. It started at entertainment from looking at cringy art and changed to learning about art and how we can get better as artists.
I've been on DeviantArt long enough to know that the art community is full of some of the most close-minded and exclusive people in the world (I've been blocked by a lot of people simply for having a different opinion than them). I'm just glad you aren't one of them. ;)
Speaking of art styles, could you do something related to the anime art style in general? For example, when is drawing in the style okay, and when is it not? I have seen your micro rant on the style and how it results in overly big eyes and such. But when is it really okay to have it as your default style?
Drawing in your own style is always okay. Like, even if you think you don't have an art style, you still have it and you always will draw with your own style, want you or not.
We were supposed to make an essay about problem and solution, and i did about art style theft and how is actually not a thing and at the end everyone said "You said art style way too much"
I have a strong feeling that the “anime art style” is going to come up in the future. If I had to give my two cents about this, I’ll follow along with the handwriting-art style analogy. Like handwriting, the more you draw/write, the better it looks. My handwriting used to (and still does in some aspects) look awful and illegible. My art used to look similar ways, and I continued to practice and play around with what worked and what didn’t. I found a new way to color hair, I learned how to draw eyes, I’ve gone through phases of my art and it really shows.
I can't believe this was recommended to me again out of the blue. I gotta say though, this was a great brief overview of what style is. I still remember the pen example all these years later. Solar Sands has all of my respects, bro.
pretty much my thoughts -artstyles can't be "copywritten" and as long as the art is not TRACED, who cares if they look similar -it's okay to draw anime-chibi-etc, as long as you actually TRY to learn anatomy, otherwise it's going to look like shit. cute maybe, but still have that shitty, childish laziness to the body -don't use "art style" as an excuse to not listen to critique/learn/improve -people are allowed to experiment and use other styles they may enjoy
An artstyle choice that i personally don't like are those Calarts lips that everyone in tumblr does You know, those ones that looks like this? : (|) Yeah, idk why i just don't really like them
I don't mind them in Steven Universe/su fanart which is where they are originally from (I think) but if used in something else it always just looks like SU
Alfonso Razo I am not talking about big lips, i am talking about lips that are drawn by making a straight line and then two curve ones at the sides, similar to Steven Universe Edit: Like this (Now in an actual image) kiwifarms.net/attachments/tumblrshit12-jpg.265174/
Honestly, i think that this obsession with styles is one of the greatest problems with artists online. Because they cant or dont want to explore art and build up their skills as far as they can go, they instead try to come up with a style, which ironically makes their art look like everyone elses. If you develop your skill and understand then you will find things that interest you and things you want to explore. I like dark things, and things that explore the unknown, especially landscapes, but i didnt know that when i first started drawing, it took time.
I'm nearly 28 and still trying to discover my style, tbh. I like to work with a lot of different ideas and bits and pieces from other works and artists I like and love. My current art style is unfinished and artwork abandonment
I know I’m late but you can have multiple art styles and that’s okay. That what I do too, I have multiple styles depending on what mood I want the drawing to be
I only have one problem with having only one art style. Everytime I try to draw my style at the moment I seem to either make my style better or worse. It sucks for me, I really can't tell what a mistake for me.
Don't worry. Experimenting with your art style is totally normal. Sometimes you'll have off days, and sometimes you'll create masterpieces. Just keep on drawing!
I would argue that the Simpson's yellow skin isn't a stylistic thing. Because your art style is the way you draw all the time not what you draw. The fact that they have longer finger shaped noses, longer lips, bigger eyes and whatnot is art style. But the fact that they are yellow is just something they added to the characters to make them pop, it would have the same affect as if i gave them all fanny packs or something. Love your videos! :^)
I have a very comical art style, but it has semi realistic feel to it, so I call it realistic fiction! This doesn't add to the video, but thought I would share
kitty cat same here, like cartoony faces, realistic torso details; I draw a lot of WW1 stuff, and don’t spend too much time on the face, unless they’re wearing a gas mask. Well, for me; that’s how I see it...
AlinaWatermelon I mean that makes sense though because if the artists style is consistent with having a pointy nose, or a particular eye look, if the artist is drawing another character as (let's say) fan art or something they're going to transfer it to their style.
I totally understand your point of view and I agree with it, but what I mean is when artists do this not because they want to be consistent with their style but just for fun, like to the point when you dont even really recognize the character (for example they completely change the face/body shape or color scheme). And they usually do this with only a few characters, like every other character looks like the original except those few ones. And then when you ask them why they did this they answer that its their art style
ASimpleLoafOfBread I think what Alina meant is drastic changes. Like if a character has obviously sharp/thin eyes and is then drawn with large round eyes. I understand that an art style change warrants minor changes but every art style can have (slight) variety in shapes and sizes. If characters are drawn in a different art style without taking note of prominent features, wouldnt there be a point where the character doesnt look like themselves? (Personal input) When i observe an art style i dont observe the overall design of one character. I observe the weight of their lines, the angles or curves they prefer. Art style is sometimes subtle and to me its the way a person draws rather than "copy".
AlinaWatermelon *cough* tumblr *cough* *cough* black washing *cough* In all seriousness though, completely agree! Hate it when artist change core features of a character, makes them near unrecognizable.
I don't have a 'polished' art style, I mostly do a little free hand and the use inspiration or reference. I hate it when people say I'm fake because I apparently 'trace' things when really I actually hate tracing altogether. Using reference is not a bad thing, just a step up on creativity. Hello, World!
Good one.
As someone who's art style has gone from (very anime), to realistic, to (heavily inspired by another artist), to cartoonish and back again I think putting too much pressure on one's art style and trying to make it stay consistant and recognizable can stagnate growth as an artist. Never feel afraid to challenge yourself and try new things.
yes, i think that we should just draw freely after learning the basics and doing what we want, letting our art style develop naturally.

I've never drawn realism. I've tried and it ends up anime style
@@HYPERxSONICxFANx2012 practice is everything ;)
I love hyper realism , I keep getting better and it goes in the library where I live
No matter what, a grammar mistake is still a mistake and will ruin the look of your sentence.
ppl still care abt grammar lol. go get a hobby
@@aixide I never put periods at the ends of comments and descriptions, and I've been raised to know should of, not should have (I have absolutely no idea how to make this not sound passive aggressive but I'm not trying to be rude)
@@a_reelskitface Well that means you're already better than me beccause I was definitely being passive aggressive lol, it just annoys me when people cling on to grammar mistakes. Do whatever you want tho
that's funny that you would compare art styles to handwriting, my handwriting has gotten worse over the years while my drawings improved lol

Same. My handwriting sucks even worse than my drawing skill.
why do people on tumblr give characters noses that are red like they have fevers like are they okay
ikr
I think it stems from those old kids books where the nose is slighly more redish than the rest of the face
And it might also just be them trying to be more *a e s t h e t i c* or whatever
I think they try to give it more depth but seriously though you’re right

I hate when people use the excuse 'it's my artstyle!' when someone critiques their anatomy or facial features or smth especially when they're trying to draw realistically. Like there is no "iTs mY aRtStYlE" when you're trying to draw realistically.
Honestly, if someone tells you it looks off “IT LOOKS OFF”. Don’t just ignore them, fucking learn why it looks off and take criticism.

Tu vieja en tanga / It isn't really that they don't want to hear or take critisism that annoys me, it's the excuse itself. And yeah true.

imo you can't "find" an art style. you develop it during your art journey by trying different things and looking at your favourite artists' art and TAKING INSPIRATION (do not copy, jesus pls) from their art and applying the things u like the most to your own art. just keep practicing and you'll notice both improvement and consistency to show!!
Alfonso Razo you're kinda right! practice won't do any good if you're practicing something wrong for the whole time. that's why it's also important to do real life studies and use references~ and about the inspirstion thing, there are many things you can get inspired by! you would be surprised what can actually bring you various ideas, that's why it's good to always carry something where you can write those ideas down ^^ i don't think anyone leaves their house without their phone nowadays, so it will be easy to write down ideas as soon as they come~ one of my favourite artists said "you know the saying "think outside the box"? bullshit. there is no box. you're on an open field, with ideas floating all around you. and you have a butterfly net! you just have to catch those ideas before they float away" and i couldn't agree more ^^
Saeyoung Choi did mush roomie say that? (just a wild guess about the box thing)
I'm a cupcake yup!!

Trust me, if you spend enough time drawing, it’ll begin to look unique on its own.

what i don't like is this one artstyle hovering around, mostly teenagers between 12-15 years old who all mysteriously question their sexuality adapted it, who are part of some fandom (most of the time musicals).
It's also somehow become popular to project one's emotions onto characters and draw them with self-harm scars or crying and the like, or to joke about not caring about anything in life.
evesning (not trying to be like "huhuhu im special", but) I'm 13 and I still practice body shapes, and I don't draw lewd and/or edgy stuff, and I can't draw thicc lips ;-;
I have these big SU eyes, but thats about it. Im good to go i guess

Forget about art styles for a second, I gotta develop my handwriting, so much harder to learn than you'd think, nobody talks about it.

pretty much my thoughts
-artstyles can't be "copywritten" and as long as the art is not TRACED, who cares if they look similar
-it's okay to draw anime-chibi-etc, as long as you actually TRY to learn anatomy, otherwise it's going to look like shit. cute maybe, but still have that shitty, childish laziness to the body
-don't use "art style" as an excuse to not listen to critique/learn/improve
-people are allowed to experiment and use other styles they may enjoy

Honestly, i think that this obsession with styles is one of the greatest problems with artists online. Because they cant or dont want to explore art and build up their skills as far as they can go, they instead try to come up with a style, which ironically makes their art look like everyone elses. If you develop your skill and understand then you will find things that interest you and things you want to explore. I like dark things, and things that explore the unknown, especially landscapes, but i didnt know that when i first started drawing, it took time.
I love lavender towns art style
*Nima Begum same.*
no
OtterPrim Same-
I'm gonna copy her
same lol
I'm nearly 28 and still trying to discover my style, tbh. I like to work with a lot of different ideas and bits and pieces from other works and artists I like and love.
My current art style is unfinished and artwork abandonment
I know I’m late but you can have multiple art styles and that’s okay. That what I do too, I have multiple styles depending on what mood I want the drawing to be
*about to do homework*

*gives homework to doggo and takes a photo*
...I should do that
I only have one problem with having only one art style.
This doesn't add to the video, but thought I would share
kitty cat is your pfp made by you?
I'd like to see
What’s your tumblr/deviantart? I’d love to see your works!
kitty cat same here, like cartoony faces, realistic torso details; I draw a lot of WW1 stuff, and don’t spend too much time on the face, unless they’re wearing a gas mask.
Well, for me; that’s how I see it...
Existential Crisis oh heck you don't want to see my deviant art, it's super old and has my first digital art
Every time solar sands says ‘art style’ take a shot of drink of your choice
Take a shot every time he says “art style”
Omg why does he mention the topic several times?!?!?
2:57 adult cartoon styles in a nutshell. (except for ya know, Futurama and Simpsons)
And bob burger
You could talk about how certain artists think its okay to draw a character with completely different features just because its their "art style"
(Personal input)
When i observe an art style i dont observe the overall design of one character. I observe the weight of their lines, the angles or curves they prefer. Art style is sometimes subtle and to me its the way a person draws rather than "copy".
AlinaWatermelon *cough* tumblr *cough* *cough* black washing *cough*
In all seriousness though, completely agree!

Thanks 4 reading my rant ;D
Absolutely Absol those people are dumb as hell! references and inspiration are never bad things smh. people just want like to accuse something
Yeah
cool kid on the block ikr! They're probably just jealous so they think its right to put down others :\
people who are misinformed enough to think that using reference = tracing are by definition not worth your time as an artist.
La Potato thank you!
