  • This is my experience of my Hyundai Kona 64kwh Premium se first 10k service all it gave me was more questions
    Why does the Kona electric need more services then the diesel?
    What was the battery software recall?
    Why am i the owner not aloud to know the state of health of the battery?
    Ok so today I had a call regarding this from from Hyundai “apparently” the update was to make the DTE (distance to empty) more reliable and less fluctuating. Testing was showing when the battery was low SOC the GOM range was fluctuating to much and not giving a true reflection on DTE.

    Thanks for sharing.
    Hyundai just aren't making sense. When I bought my Kona the dealer told me annual safety inspections, which sounds like what they did for your service were free!!
    It really is sounding like Hyundai don't know what to do. They car doesn't need servicing but they want it to go back for the repeat business

    I agree with you. What exactly are Hyundai doing for your money. And why 10,000mi and not 20,000. Seems more a case of money for old rope.

    Another fantastic main dealer 'service' on an EV , even after £80 they forgot to reset the reminder ! Thats one expensive screen wash top up and tyre kick!
    Great points made , come on Hyundai you can do better than this !

    You are absolutely correct! I paid for the first service 125£ or so.

    Thanks for the video. My local dealer (Vancouver, Canada) wants me to bring it in @ 6,000 km. Their claim was that the software needed to be checked along with a variety of other inspections.

      I collected my car in Nov 2018 and so far had 3 recalls. Drivers airbag, Instrument cluster & this last on the Battery software. Recalls you wont be charged for its under warranty.

    Thanks for the heads-up, Mark. Sounds like a standard servicing scam. Another common one is the annual key fob battery replacement, costing £8 or more, and which is a 2 minute job, plus the few pence cost of the battery (if bought in bulk). We just tell them not to change it, or simply hand them the spare 'manual' key, and replace our battery every 5 to 10 years, as necessary.

    • @EvLifeUK
      @EvLifeUK  4 года назад

      They havn't mentioned anything about the battery in the key fob being changed with me. Happily the 2nd service was much better.

    Wow, what a rip off the servicing is. I don’t do anywhere near your mileage, so my Kona Electric will be serviced on its yearly basis. Thanks for the video, every enlightening.

    Thanks for the tip evlifeUK. It's little things like this that the onus is on the owners to stay on top of. The dealerships aren't going to do you any favors, unless you have a good relationship with the service department manager. I think it's safe to say nobody is going to look after you. . . . except. . . well. . . you . . . right ? Right then. .
    I have also had similar things happen like this with cars I've had, and when it did, I let em know it. I ALSO let em know that I know enough about cars that I'm not a sucker, and that I'm watching them.

    I asked about servicing when I picked up my Kona last month,(I know that EV's really don't need a service very often,) they replied "bring it back in about a years time ".I'm in Québec by the way, where winter started last October and the temperatures are now rising above zero during the day. So a yearly check is probably appropriate after the grit and subzero conditions of a testing 6 month period.

    Thanks for another interesting and informative video. I'm also a high mileage driver so please let me know when you've found out how to turn back the odometer so I'm not at the service centre more often than the dentist. 😀

    It's for the money. And they know that people wouldn't be willing to let themselves be ripped off like that, so they threaten with warranty void if you don't comply.

    It's clear why they want Kone EVs more often in service - dealers need some additional income stream...

    You should complain, Hyundai Bexhill-On-Sea charge the same labour figure as on an ice! That’s £190 and it’s peeing me off. £80 for an inspection I wouldn’t mind quite so much.

    EV life UK what has been your experience of CCS charging in Scotland? i recently took my kona up to Fort William and i made three attempts to use chargeplace Scotland ccs chargers. None of those i tried would pass the prechecks, Instavolt and others worked fine on CCS, but i wondered if this a network problem or if i was just unlucky. due to visit Edinburgh next week already avoiding Ecotricty wondering who else to avoid..

    • @EvLifeUK
      @EvLifeUK  4 года назад

      Sorry for a late reply sadly family matter have taken priority the last 5 months. On the whole ccs has been no issue in Scotland or at all travelling the uk the main thing i have have found and you will be aware of if you have watch the kona road trip vid is just avoid Ecotricity. The company is now holding back the Ev revolution.

    As far as I know you don’t have to go to Hyundia for it’s annual service only it’s free health check. The service! Can be undertaken by any VAT registers garage. EU rules.

    • @EvLifeUK
      @EvLifeUK  5 лет назад +1

      that correct but you don't get the breakdown cover if you do this i believe

    • @wobby1516
      @wobby1516 5 лет назад

      Ev Life UK
      That I think would be a breach of EU law as it penalises you for using another garage. It’s no different to saying that the warranty is void if you don’t service with Hyundai. However I won’t be the first test case!

      Good to here, hopefully was just a back experience. I went to a different garage for my 20k miles service and although they unplugged my dash cam and forgot to plug it back in the experience was much better.

    I guess to check all those point takes time and the guy who does that have to be paid. So if there were any fluid leaks it would be good if that was fixed. You never know if something like a leak would occur if nobody checks. So that is what your paying for. It is just peace of mind.

      this is the cost of the minor service in the UK i believe the major is about £130 but although that sounds cheap all they do is change brake fluid and cabin filter lol

      Ok so today I had a call regarding this from from Hyundai “apparently” the battery software update was to make the DTE (distance to empty / GOM) more reliable and less fluctuating. Testing was showing when the battery was low SOC the GOM range was fluctuating to much and not giving a true reflection on DTE. I’m currently in the process of emptying the battery then going on a 20mile journey to the charger to see if the GOM fluctuates. First of all, thanks for the video and sorry you got ripped off as you know from the dealer. I HATE that type of business. Do you or anyone else know what the latest '2019-2020 Kona Electric (OS EV) High Voltage Battery Monitoring Update entails and what it actually does. Apparently, there is news of at least 2 Kona EV fires and is why the update is being done. An interesting bit of info. that I noticed on Hyundai's site was this update isn't categorized as a 'Safety Recall', but instead a 'Service Campaign'. Here is a link to the article regarding the fires ... www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/hyundai-kona-electric-battery-fire-update/ Also, not sure if this is issue is restricted to only N. America cars or not.

    i think this is the first long range Hyunday EV so that's why they want to check it more often than the ice cars, because that technology is more common to them. i think its not a big deal to do a service at Hyundai and be sure nothing is wrong with the ev. ik think when the models get more like the Kona the interval will be changed. Nice vid keep on! did you watch mine? plese feel free to comment me! Thanks! ruclips.net/video/6zBe7aAx4I4/видео.html

      Yeh the fact it goes for a service every 10k is what is, bit that bugged me was that they didnt know what the battery software recall was and what effects it would have on the car. Well that plus they forgot to turn of the service indicator light which would of been a massive hassle if i had to go there as its a 90 mile round trip.
