Electric car (EV) servicing. Hyundai Ioniq/Kona service plan. Main dealer or local garage?

  • Ive been asking both my main dealer and local garage about servicing to understand what is needed and what isn't. I started this thinking why bother servicing at all in thevfirst few years as nothing needs to be serviced.
What I've found has changed my mind.
Should we use our local garage and not a main dealer and why.
Electric cars are definitely easier to service as there's fewer moving mechanical parts to check and service. In fact only the brake fluid and pollen filter needs attention in the first 4 years and those seem optional. The 5th year , 50,000 miles, sees a critical check of gear reduction oil being topped up or replaced but basically that's it. Coolant gets changed at 100,000 miles also.
Brake fluids often get replaced at services every few years however it appears the flushing and ensuring of no air in the system seems to be the primary aim not that the fluid is defective. Alternative views are that if the brakes are fine why tinker with something that's fine. Tinkering could cause an issue. If it's not broke, don't fix it etc.
EV servicing is most certainly a challenge to comprehend in the traditional sense of servicing.
Checking your cars health, now that seems sensible.
Battery health is checked as part of the service. This and other components being checked shouldn't need servicing and are under warranty so I'm concerned servicing charges include checks for things which are basically covered under warranty. shouldn't these checks be free?

What about the quoted 4 year, 40,000 mile service of £531. Vastly more than I have been charged for my previous VW diesel Golf. I have seen very little on this huge charge publicised, and certainly wasn’t informed when I bought the car.

Funny because the guy at Hyundai in Croydon just said I have to pay for updates, even though I knew that was a lie it’s nice to know.

I had a service plan for my last motorbike with the main Triumph Dealer. I sold the bike part way through the year and I got the service plan cancelled and they refunded me the unused portion. I was pleasantly surprised to receive the money back. With my current car, a Honda CRZ, I have a service plan with the main Honda dealer. That costs me just under £20 a month which is not bad for an ICE car.

I have a feeling the law stops them from invalidating the warranty when you use a local garage.

If your don't have the vehicle serviced by hyundia and use hyundia parts then you have no warrenty
But the 8 year warrenty on your battery is also invalidated because your have to have a battery health check every year. Other wise if cells start to fail you will not know until its to late and hyundia do not have to hour the warrenty its clear in the terms and condition .

Not true , Hyundai confirm warranty is validate if you service according to their spec and parts by authorise service company .
They are not allowed to link the two. If you've been told otherwise you've been conned

All fluid are include in a hyundia service they are not separate
First service if pay is £58inc vat second £125inc vat at my hyundia dealer
    Using hyundia online service
    First service £78 Inc vat 2nd £178
So it pay to shop .
But hyundia uk are very clear about the battery health check your independent cannot do this unless they have the correct equipment and software without this your battery warrenty is invalidated as the battery is £8000 plus vat and labour you do not want to be messing about.

If your local garage has always been good to you, why would you not want to support them for the sake of £15.00 a year? It is exactly this type of penny pinching that has destroyed the local high street. What position would you be in if everyone did this in the future with ev's causing good local garages to close and the main dealer just decides to double there prices for no other reason than they can. They do have a habit of charging extortionate amounts for some jobs, just because they are the only ones who can do it. The value of a service in any industry should not be just about choosing the cheapest price.

Gregg, thanks for watching. I think you've misunderstood me. It's not that the dealer is cheaper at all. Im saying their isn't a money argument so it's more about convenience and value as to what they can do. Local garages can do less and offer less as they're solely geared up for mechanical servicing. EVs are about checks and diagnostics, which I argue should be free at the dealer. Yes this will impact local garages IF they don't find a way of adding value

First service on my Ioniq was £84 by main dealer, with no service plan.

Can't speak with any certainty about the motors in electric cars but I have had a fair bit of experience of high voltage generators and motors used in industry and although they were fairly trouble free they did need keeping a close eye on because they have lots of bearings cooling vanes etc and if things go wrong they start small but can quickly go very wrong
Remember CD's replacing Vinyl , they were going to be indestructible you would be able to throw them across the room and no matter how scratched they were they would never skip click or jump I believed all that at the time lol!

J Tait,. I don't think they open up the motor to check but it'd make sense to have sensors in the motor. Wonder who makes the motors. Hyundai themselves or outsourced?

The Kona has a 8 year battery warranty so I imagine that could be void if not serviced by dealer> Not sure what they could do though in terms of maintenance on Lithium batteries!!

It pointless asking the dealership about the warranty the dealer do not have anything to do with the warranty it is run by hyundia uk they have been very clear if you not had the annual safety checks done by hyundia approved service centre your warranty may not be validated.

May. May be invalidated not will be .

I think your being a bit wishful to think that a garage will do a service / Safety check on an electric car foc. After all that is basically what happens when a gas boiler is service, as there isn’t a thing to replace, but you’ll still pay. A dealer has to pay the wages of his mechanics even when it’s just a safety check, the mechanic don’t work for free.

    • @EVPuzzle
      @EVPuzzle  6 лет назад

Wobby 1, I said they already do annual health checks for free. These are safety checks. For free. It's to get you in the dealership which is good. I'm suggesting they expand that for the checks of the service but of course charge when actual servicing things are needed.

Have you been given any dates or estimates yet? I've just had a twitter exchange with Hyundai UK and they have stated that the Kona EV won't be available until autumn now. Very disappointed.

    • @EVPuzzle
      @EVPuzzle  6 лет назад

Robert, autumn has always been the dates discussed but Hyundai UK are just a room full of people who actually don't know any dates. They tell each person something slightly different it seems. Another commented on here was told imminent news this week by Hyundai UK for example.
Anything delivered in 2018 will be a bonus in my mind

So your telling me your local garage has the battery check equipment . They have tooling and software to checkmate performancev of the battery,. That everything is working that the software to the battery systems are up to date. Your telling me your local garage can do this bmi, software etc .
Your telling that your localmgarage can servicecthe heat pump . Tell me your local garage will do this.
See hyundia will not update your engine your bms or your motor management systems for free they will. Do you sat nav and ice but that it they do not do the rest unless you pay as part of the service. I have asked. Last the year 5 service is expected today price it near £800 but this service require all the battery cooling system emptying and cleaning all fluid replace included oils in the motor and drive system but if your purchase hyundai manufacturer prepaid service plan you get 6 services 3 mots in the price any items that fail on mot are covered to the cost £1000 this 6 yr plan has cost £896 so it inflation proof which is good as things have gone up in price my breakdown cover is fully eu wide I get a courtesy car with no extra charges. If my car breaks down and has to be recovered a car is included for 48hrs.
Yes you get road assistance if you keep your annual service up to date with hyundai but we get with plan.
Finally if you don't use all your service you can cash it in or add to your new hyundia if you buy another.
There are many advantage to keeping with the manufacture services are not expensive the do not have huge hourly rates.
Getting the car checked out to see if it needs things replacing is good lastly not having your car service by hyundai recognise service centre invalidates your warranty so good look with that your are a fool

Yes my local garage who services my car at home can do the lot and better than a dealer.
      Lookup Cleevley mobile
And don't forget the software updates are free and completely seperate from servicing us dealer give free health checks
And if you think a main dealer checks all those things you've mentioned in a service you need your nonce testing. They change the pollen filter if you're lucky and look for stuff to bill you extra for
