  • In Episode 160 of Finnegan's Garage, the owner and driver of the world's fastest street car, Tom Bailey, dropped by the garage to school Mike Finnegan on what to do if the Cadillac ever catches on fire. He also showed off an awesome Fireade system, which will extinguish the blaze without making a mess of the Caddy. Once we got that out of the way, I took Tom for a ride in Game Over, which at the time we shot this video, was not broken! lol.

Many know it’s a good idea, but because it doesn’t make the car faster they do the absolute minimum and figure they’ll be fine. Then when someone catches on fire it reminds everybody that it can happen to anybody.
Safety actually usually makes the car slower because it adds weight. But, it sure is nice when something goes wrong to not have a cage made of plastic or a fire system full of nitrous.

Years ago GM had converted a bunch (50+) busses to run on methanol and given to Universities for testing. Methanol is extremely corrosive and most of the fuel system had been changed to stainless, but there were a few parts the were original brass. The one at my University had extremely strict rules about startup (fire extinguisher in hand and engine cover open) and a log with yearly replacement of those parts. About half of the busses converted ended up being lost to fire, but we never had a issue.

We also supplied fire protection for large frac jobs where high volumes of 100% methanol was pumped at very high pressures through three inch steel lines. We would wrap all connections with paper towel just so we could see if there was fire as methanol burns without smoke and it practically invisible when on fire. Advice to all people using methanol: Purchase a fire system and install it ASAP! These types of on board fire systems keep race drivers out of the hospital burn unit. Well that's my safety speech so be safe and have fun racing!

just remember when you are placing the nozzels for the sprinkler, if a sprinkler is hitting another sprinkler with its foam/water that sprinkler is never going of because its cooled down by the other sprinkler. so placement is key. as you know heat goes up under the roof etc so that is often the place where the heat is highest.

The main point of the bulb in the auto block is to be between you and the fire. Normally on a race car the base of the windshield and top of the firewall catch the heat first. The injector o-rings is something we should start treating as a maintenance item. Running E is known to eat up lines and rubber o-rings. Too many cars are being lost from ethanol damage to fuel systems

Safety Tip: It's great to have an automated fire suppression system. If you're unconscious and there's fire, the system will trigger automatically and hopefully save your life.
But there's no need to wear a life jacket in a 1700 HP jet boat. Because everyone can breathe underwater, especially when they're unconscious.

Chill neighbors. I've both had neighbors that'll call the cops in a second because they could hear my music a tiny bit and neighbors that come walking up with their fingers in their ears while I'm setting timing complaining that they can't adjust their carbs by ear 'cause my car is to loud. Then they want to help.

Finnegan’s Garage, hey Mike Finnegan just watched the Motor Trend video that you and Freiburger did with the goofy Donk Caprice. I’d really like to see you guys build a 331 for that car using your 4.3 L99 crankshaft and an LT-1 block. I’m sure you all would really dig a high winding small block. The Lt’s easily swap to a solid roller setup and the aluminum LT heads are everywhere along with the blocks. 2.02/1.60’s are an easy swap too. I’m right in the middle of a 331 build myself for my 63 Chevy II using a Liberty slick shifted Mopar 833 4 speed. I’m going full gasser with the car but using some Dart 18 degree heads. Plan to keep making power to 9,500 or 10k. I live about 45 minutes from the old Wayne County Speed shop and remember Ronnie Sox making passes at our local strip, along with seeing Grumpy Jenkins 331 inch small blocks at Indy for the US Nationals. At 6 months old,Mom was packing me to the starting line while she dumped VHT for Dad to make passes with his high winding bumper dragging 68 RS/SS 4gear car. I’ve never seen Freiburger tackle anything even remotely close to such a build in the Engine Masters stuff. I know this is a long post but I’m pretty addicted to the LT’s,owning four 94 model Trans-Ams,1 being a hardtop auto car while the other 3 are t-top 6 speed cars. Sorry for the long rant, keep up the awesome work you’ve got a kickass channel and collection!

“Could you not run the boat? Yeah thanks it shakes the windows of my house.” That’s Cool. I would do things to own a vehicle of some kind with a motor in it big enough to shake down my house.

One thing most racers rarely do is practice getting out of the car. You are going to feel a bit stupid pretending your car is on fire but run through the motions on a regular basis until you know exactly what you are going to do and it becomes second nature. You do not want to do it for the first time when there is an actual fire.
If you drive rally or anything with a co-driver then practice your drill together and know what you are both going to do.
