Nice. You could've explained some things more in depth or more accurately but it's a long iceberg I get it. You overall did a pretty alright job. I'll give some clarification on entries now. Some people in the comments elaborated too. Also I'd like to acknowledge some of this were inspired by previous charts: - The shine shirt is added after beating the game - There is that beta ferris wheel and other oddities but also the ferris wheel is red at the start of the ending - I put in lava cheep cheeps because of how out of the way and obscure they are and look like living corpses - For skipping bianco hills 1 you actually don't have to do any tricks you can just beat the goopy piranha, make the bridge spawn, then simply walk past it and go right to 2. It's the only shine you can skip by intentional design - As someone else said there are ceilings you can hang onto indoors like bombomb bridge hanging - Someone else also said during the flood there's certain texture differences, asset changes, and legit beta content around that's not around in normal delfino plaza - Something with the sand bird I'd like to add is how it's this godly, legendary deity... and it's just kinda there then gone lol - The shine you spawn for cleaning the shine gate is just there in the intro for some reason. Surprisingly I've never seen this pointed out anywhere - Using the pinna park cannon refers to using it like the one at delfino plaza - Another commenter talked about the wind sounds but in certain areas (don't know why some do and don't get this) when falling down a bottomless pit you'll be left hearing this loud weird ominous wind gusting sound even after the death jingle has played. It was always super weird and kinda unsettling to me - With coins being used as currency I was actually talking about the yellow ones. In sunshine there is only like two times you do this and I think it's the only time in any Mario game outside the rpgs and spinoffs. Super weird maybe scrapped ideas? - Another iceberg claimed that the paint brush works with stem cells lol - With pianta village oddities I was actually referring to it in the world and not glitches. It's this giant tree above a bottomless black void hole that's just out in the island and not even a secret stage. Its placement in delfino island is pretty unclear and I think you can only see it by boosting above noki bay - Some people have theorized about piantas being evolved Pikmin due to their appearance and them having trees atop their heads while Pikmin have flowers... bruh how have you never even heard of Pikmin before? - The warp zone is referring to the transition cutscene you see when Shadow Mario steals fludd. It's just so weird cause this is the only time you see what it actually looks like in anything when Mario is warping in between levels and it's just kinda there. It's creepy even. It makes me think they wanted to explore it more but just didn't - You got it with corona mountain but also I just got it from another iceberg and liked the idea - Ok so this isn't any of our fault but with the girl I wish I made this iceberg like a year later cause they found unused dialogue that could've come from her. That's huge! - The demon I was referring to was the one in the unused pollution map and the idea of it actually appearing in the level - I did mean that sinking goop, there is videos too of Mario sinking in it and dying. I just had the idea come to me of some innocent kid playing, dreaming of it, landing on goop and Mario suddenly sinks and chokes horribly idk lol.
When I saw the SMS Pikman connections, I thought you were referring to Super Mario 128, which showed off new technologies used in multiple GameCube titles including SMS and Pikman, and would also later inspire the physics for Super Mario Galaxy.
31:13 I get exactly what this one means So when you fall off and get a “TOO BAD” sometimes the music will cut off and all you will hear is the wind blowing extra loud I believe it mostly happened when you enter a special stage where you’re in the sky aka sand bird, pachinko, or the green warp pipe areas
Yeah, it’s totally this. I feel like I’ve also heard it falling from Pianta Village, especially during the Fluff Festival when you’re on the clouds and stuff.
The Yoshi part at 31:55 Yoshi dissapearing in water is not because of them being endangered but because they're created by the Paintbrush from Bowser Jr, hence why when falling in water they turn into globs of paint similar to any other Enemy created by the paint brush when killed in water or other means. You can see it Gelato Beach, when you kill the enemies there, they turn into globs of paint similar to Yoshi when falling in water.
20:05 in the game there's a lot of weird messages like "make sure to take care of your teeth", and "take care of your pets" with the first happening in the eel teeth cleaning level and the second one in the red chain chomp level. As a kid playing the game the messages felt very out of nowhere tbh
i remember reading these messages as a little kid (maybe 4 or 5) and thinking to myself “wow, ive never thought about that” so i guess they’re mostly aimed at really small children
I love this game but some of the shines are just so bullshit that i just dont want to even try them. And unlike sm64, you are forced to get all of them exept the ones after the 7th.
I’d say 3D land is the most underrated, but sunshine definitely gets a bad rep. It has some questionable design, but it’s not the 6/10 people make it out to be
Something I discovered today and haven't heard anyone talk about is that the raccoon dad and son that run the blue coin exchange are on the roof of the building during the flood sequence. It's the only time in the game where you can speak to the son, and he seems to have his own unique voice that's not used anywhere else in the game! On a further note, the only other npc in the game of their race is in Noki Bay at the boat place. It leaves a lot of questions as to where they came from and if they are native to any area on Isle Delphino
I think he meant as a child. Honestly, I didn't know either until Smash Bros implemented olimar in the game. Unless you where lucky and your parents bought you all the gamecube games you wanted. I was stuck with smash melee, kirbys airide ans mario party 4
In reference to [24:08 "Flood Differences"], the map of the flooded plaza has some slight but noticeable differences to the regular plaza! Sadly I don't remember them myself and it's been years since I watched the video that would've mentioned it (Particular Mushroom maybe?), but I'd have to guess that's what they're referring to
oh yeah and i think one of the manholes is in a different spot as well there's a whole theory that the flood plaza was like a beta version of delfino because of a lot of small stuff like that being in different places
Flooded plaza is an older beta map. The manhole covers look different and you can see one in the jail. The map being used also has a few different buildings when it comes to design. That map is clearly an older beta map.
Sunshine was the first game I ever played and I love it to death. I think it's by far the most interesting game to look back on and wonder about it's development and earlier builds, as it's already probably the most unique Mario game to date.
Pikmin Links is probably referring to "Super Mario 128". It was a gamecube tech demo that showed 128 marios running around interacting. It's said that this concept was later worked into pikmin, where you can have up to 100 individual pikmin in your squad. So though a bit of a stretch (like all great icebergs), you could argue Sunshine and Pikmin are linked by this common thread.
It goes a bit deeper than that. The demo is what Pikmin would turn into so a Mario demo became Pikmin but the GameCube was good at rendering a lot of small objects. As you break up the manta boss if you broke all the big pieces down to the smallest size you would have 128 pieces. The object number Nintendo loved was 128 so the link here is the fact that demo did become Pikmin but it also stayed connected when they used the same rendering settings to make that boss end up 128 pieces.
Hey blue! In the indoor ceilings entry, the ceiling you snap onto after doing the red electrikoopa glitch is the actual level ceiling! It’s hangable for whatever reason lol
Flood Differences is refering to that when flood happends, it actually uses earlier model of the Delfino Plaza. There are some model and hitbox changes for example.
It's not so much that Yoshis are endangered. I don't think there actually are any Yoshis on the Island. The Yoshis that you use were actually created by Bowser Jr. That's why the melt away when they fall into the water
I'm pretty sure it's a lot easier to skip the first shine in Bianco Hills. All you do is make the bridge appear and then instead of grabbing the Shine Sprite you ho up the Windmill. There's even a Pianta there that makes a comment about you being there early. I'm pretty sure it's just an Easter egg.
Surprised the airstrip soft lock wasn’t on here, a couple of copies of the game are messed up to where when u get fludd and try to spray water fludd will play the animation but not spray any water even while having a full tank, there is nothing that can be done and those copies are unbeatable
The stuff Mario wears to make the screen darker was for people who are sensitive to light. As you collect shines the plaza gets way more lit up. I believe it even mentions it in the instruction manual. Probably just an easy way for kids to adjust brightness without messing with a tv's settings
The flood differences is talking about the fact that the map when the area is flooded is actually a much earlier version of the map instead of the normal version we see when its not flooded.
I hope we get a Gamecube gigaleak in the future; there's so many cut elements I wish we could know more about. Will we ever see the Delfino Express? Can we discover what HinoKuris_2's purpose in the beta? Will we ever get the model for the human girl (or any other human characters we never got to see)?
I'm just really worried that after the giga leak, Nintendo got so worried for future leaks that we unintentionally made them nuke a ton of other things that weren't leaked so they never see the light of day
The bianco skip is always described so difficultly. I actually ended up skipping it by accident the first time. After you get the slope back up, just hop across the broken bridge. Then just do the second shine normally.
31:43 pretty sure what they mean by endangered Yoshi's is the fact that the Yoshi's on Delfino Island have all gone extinct/fled from the Snooza Koopa's you see in the 4th episode of Pinna Park "The Wilted Sunflowers". Also the reason why Yoshi's melt in water is because none of them are real Yoshi's, they are drawings made by Bowser Jr.
13:37 I did this as a kid all the time, I genuinely thought that’s how you were meant to get there. To this day I still don’t climb up from the back of the wheel like intended.
I really love watching these videos. They make me feel like I'm going on an adventure with people around the world finding out lil things about Mario games They're just lovely!
I’ve only ever played SMB1 and Mario Maker 2, but Sunshine is still my fav game in the entire franchise. There are a number of reasons, such as the music, the easter eggs, and just the overall feel of the game, and more. Idk I just like it.
What I love seeing in these videos are all the fans coming together in the comments and sometimes the original Iceberg maker to answer/correct things that the video missed
27:41 the shine gate shine is also probably referring to the shine sprite that appears after you spray the graffiti off the giant shine. you can see it floating way up in the air above the gate in that picture
Regarding other things that could be mentioned; Pinna Park was going to be an actual second hub world; especially as there's evidence the original entrance to Pianta Village was supposed to be located there. Heck, that red cannon in Pinna Park seems like it was once going to aim towards Isle Delfino Plaza and fire Mario back towards there. The fact it almost was another hub area would help explain why Pinna Park seems to be the best level in Sunshine. There were other water devices suggested; one idea being that Mario would be walking around with the water device and another character would be actively pumping the water. They also ditched the idea of an actual water gun. Even when they settled on FLUDD; he originally had a skinnier head. Gooper Blooper originally was mainly blue. The portal to Gelato Beach has an earlier version of the Sandbird Tower; it has columns that aren't there in the actual level. Heck, the Japanese version has an earlier version of the Bianco Hills windmill containing a block of some sort that went completely unused. An inaccessible rocket nozzle box inside the eastern bell tower seems to suggest you were meant to use that specific one to get to the bell, but was deemed unnecessary in the end; especially as one already normally spawns with the other nozzle types near the pinata statue once you unlock the nozzles. There are two strange instances of Mario screaming in the Japanese version. The first when he gets inside the cannon for Pinna Park; he screams as he enters the cannon. Mario screaming before the firing was not intentional. The other being when loading into flooded Isle Delfino Plaza, there will be a distorted scream. Fun fact; when Mecha Bowser shows up, the playable Mario model can actually be seen sleeping on the Yoshi-Go-Round. Sunshine has an unused cloud layering that could be seen in early screenshots. Also strangely it shows up in certain cutscenes.
There was a test where people played more violent games like CoD, and others played nicer games like Sunshine. People who played the latter were shown to be overall nicer after it.
I could be wrong, but flood differences might mean that Isle Delfino Plaza itself contains more differences than what you'd initially think. It seems like the flooded hub world might have been based on an earlier version. Like there being a manhole in the flooded jail cell unlike with regular Delfino Isle Plaza and a building that normally has breakable doors has older styled doors.
The King Boo theory that the Sunshine and Luigis Mansion are the same King Boo doesn't make sense in my opinion. When you defeat the King Boo in Sunshine, he explodes into paint/pollution particles, insinuating he was made by the paint brush. To me, it would seem more likely that Bowser Jr. made an enemy based off of King Boo for some reason, as he's probably met him before at one point... Maybe
while I love how the game ended up being. I would've loved to see the game if development went into another direction. I wish that one day we'll be able to find more unused content and builds, I love looking at those things.
this is my favorite mario game. i got a game cube for xmas as a kid and it came with sunshine and a memory card so i played the heck out of this game and have a heavy bias for it
I believe that Pikmin links is refering to the Piantas and the similarities they share with the Pikmin. Pikmin have these little plants on their heads. And what do Piantas have on their heads? Little trees. I believe I heard someone say that the Pikmin evolved into Piantas.
I believe "pikmin links" is referring to how SMS originally was planned to be a straight sequel to SM64 called "Super Mario 128" but that idea was not finished, and it ended up splitting into SMS as a Mario game and the idea with the 100+ Mario's running around was recycled into what we now know as "Pikmin". If I'm wrong about this one I'd be surprised but I'm only human.
Super Mario Sunshine was always my absolute favorite entry in the franchise. I just love the different levels and F.L.U.D.D., as well as the overall theme. It was the first Mario game I ever played and I have a lot of nostalgia for it.
The mountain erupting is a hilarious thing to imagine happening in a Mario game. But it is even more hilarious to me, considering that is literally the ending to Dead or Alive Xtreme. Yeah, a volleyball game with girls in small bikinis ends with the island's volcano exploding. Lol
Level 3 - Makes people more helpful Is actually a reference to a study that was researching the effects of video games categories on human behavior. SMS was the "cool and relaxing" game played
30:05 actually, I think I found one of those! In the plaza, it's the building where the durian fruits are underneath the awning next to the pier. At the ground floor level, there are some windows that are open, and you can see inside the building is fully modeled (albeit empty), but there is no way to get inside of it
This is easily one of the best Mario games ever made imo, second only to 3D World, i will never understand why some people hate Sunshine, i swear sometimes i think people just start a hate club about a game cause they can. Very interesting iceberg info btw, excellent job.
I'm pretty sure the lava cheep cheep entry is referring to the fact that their eyes look like crosses, which in cartoons implies that they are actually deceased. At least I saw others imply it as that.
There more to it, the symbol itself is just like those skeleton sombrero dudes from mario odyssey being connected to the holiday of the dead in mexico called Día de Muertos.
my theory on how the paintbrush works is it may have a connection to the ghosts E.Gadd researched and captured maybe it controls the ghost's ectoplasm to reshape them, or somehow binds the ghosts to the paintbrush itself and they're forced to follow Bowser Jr and his hijinks
Growing up is realizing we only liked summer because we had no real responsibilities, no school, maybe had to help do some chores sometimes but like nothing crazy, like taxes and bills. It was the most free time of our lives and we wasted it on swimming pools, Sunshine and ice cream sandwiches instead of investing in Apple, buying land and managing a portfolio. Also summer sucks now because it's just hot and sweaty all the time and we still have to work.
OMGGG THE SLIGHT PIKMIN REFERENCE JUST HELPED ME REMEMBER THE NAME OF THAT GAME. IT WAS A SMALL MEMORY IN MY MIND AND I COULD NOT REMEMBER WHAT GAME I WAS THINKING OF AND I NOW KNOW AFTER WATCHING THIS VIDEO AFTER YEARS OF NOT REMEMBERING WHAT IT WAS CALLED. Omg!
It was briefly mentioned in the video, but I'm guessing the "makes people more helpful" bullet point around 20:00 is 100% a reference to the study published in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin that concluded that games including Super Mario Sunshine and Chibi-Robo could promote "prosocial" positive behavior!
It was never a game. Just a demo. The GameCube is good at rendering up to 128 small objects. The manta boss at its smallest size would be 128 pieces if they were all active at once.
24:20 either because they thought no one would notice, or forgot/time constrights flooded isle delfino using an older version of the map. Manholes are in different places among other things. Its actually pretty... Uncanny? Things you can see but are way out of the way suddenly being different for a little while.
The inaccessible buildings I believe are due to the doors. Like some are smaller then mario and barely any door is big enough for the locals. I belive the onoy doors they can fit though is the double doors but they still would have to duck. Loved the video btw :)
Nintendo: We need an excuse to get Mario into the game since we want more story in this title. Let's make a really simple court scenario so we can have an excise to keep him there. It's a good excuse, and gets the message across to kids. The fans: Nintendo must've been trying to tell us something about the legal system in the Mario Universe! Maybe they were mad at the US legal system and this is a parody of it. Many this game is so smart!
That was an interesting video! I love this game, but I always wished they would have taken more time to develop it because it could have been more fleshed out
“Makes people more helpful” is probably referring to a study where people who played sunshine where more willing to help and be cooperative in tasks then people who where playing call of duty. I remember hearing about it on another video somewhere (Edit) someone else probably said this nvm-

3:55
Granchio should be pronounced granKyo and means crab in italian
i dont care how many times im watching your icebergs, they are banger and you have a chill voice
Nr. 15...
The entirety of layer 5 is now revived in the new mod "Super Mario Eclipse". Highly recommend
I really love watching these videos. They make me feel like I'm going on an adventure with people around the world finding out lil things about Mario games
They're just lovely!
I can't believe Badger from breaking bad is teaching us nintendo lore
I’ve only ever played SMB1 and Mario Maker 2, but Sunshine is still my fav game in the entire franchise. There are a number of reasons, such as the music, the easter eggs, and just the overall feel of the game, and more. Idk I just like it.
@gmdblue don’t stop making theeeese! They are so informative and fantastic vids. Loved the issac one, but that’s my favorite game so ya know
What I love seeing in these videos are all the fans coming together in the comments and sometimes the original Iceberg maker to answer/correct things that the video missed
27:41 the shine gate shine is also probably referring to the shine sprite that appears after you spray the graffiti off the giant shine. you can see it floating way up in the air above the gate in that picture
Was looking for this... Yeah, it's definitely what the entry was referring to
(testing to make sure my comment actually went through bc they've been invisible for me for a couple months now)
In the instructions theres a "hungry" icon for yoshi's stomach but i dont remember seeing it in game
Regarding other things that could be mentioned;
Pinna Park was going to be an actual second hub world; especially as there's evidence the original entrance to Pianta Village was supposed to be located there.
Also strangely it shows up in certain cutscenes.
how have you never heard of pikmin before??
There was a test where people played more violent games like CoD, and others played nicer games like Sunshine. People who played the latter were shown to be overall nicer after it.
I could be wrong, but flood differences might mean that Isle Delfino Plaza itself contains more differences than what you'd initially think. It seems like the flooded hub world might have been based on an earlier version. Like there being a manhole in the flooded jail cell unlike with regular Delfino Isle Plaza and a building that normally has breakable doors has older styled doors.
@26:31 the self-restraint on display here by not saying "A GAME THEORY" is impressive tbh
You sound like Badger from Breaking Bad (that's a compliment)
Good video!
Maybe
Love the new thumbnail
while I love how the game ended up being. I would've loved to see the game if development went into another direction. I wish that one day we'll be able to find more unused content and builds, I love looking at those things.
"The brush just works!"
Clearly we're missing an entry here about Todd Howard having a direct hand in at least part of the Mario Universe
this is my favorite mario game. i got a game cube for xmas as a kid and it came with sunshine and a memory card so i played the heck out of this game and have a heavy bias for it
I believe that Pikmin links is refering to the Piantas and the similarities they share with the Pikmin.
The manta boss also ends up 128 pieces at its smallest size so while the demo became Pikmin they used the same rendering trick to make that boss.
You'd never heard of Pikmin? ;(
unfortunately i hadn't
i feel like unkillable clamber refers to those clambers that you have to groundpound to kill because their hitboxes are insanely screwed
Lol
Level 3 - Makes people more helpful
Is actually a reference to a study that was researching the effects of video games categories on human behavior.
SMS was the "cool and relaxing" game played
30:05 actually, I think I found one of those! In the plaza, it's the building where the durian fruits are underneath the awning next to the pier. At the ground floor level, there are some windows that are open, and you can see inside the building is fully modeled (albeit empty), but there is no way to get inside of it
Good video I just wanted to point out you sound a like Badger from Breaking bad and that's very cool because I love Badger 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
23:07 yeah I guess if you live in Albuquerque the summers can get pretty hot
This is easily one of the best Mario games ever made imo, second only to 3D World, i will never understand why some people hate Sunshine, i swear sometimes i think people just start a hate club about a game cause they can. Very interesting iceberg info btw, excellent job.
Nunca pensé en encontrar un Iceberg del juego Mario Sunshine.
Buen video bro.
I'm pretty sure the lava cheep cheep entry is referring to the fact that their eyes look like crosses, which in cartoons implies that they are actually deceased. At least I saw others imply it as that.
There more to it, the symbol itself is just like those skeleton sombrero dudes from mario odyssey being connected to the holiday of the dead in mexico called Día de Muertos.
my theory on how the paintbrush works is it may have a connection to the ghosts E.Gadd researched and captured
maybe it controls the ghost's ectoplasm to reshape them, or somehow binds the ghosts to the paintbrush itself and they're forced to follow Bowser Jr and his hijinks
Also summer sucks now because it's just hot and sweaty all the time and we still have to work.
you’re channel icon in the video is a gd cube …. that’s so awesome
YOOOO SMS I DIDNT KNOW YOU WOULD MAKE A ICEBERG ON THIS NO WAY THANK YOU SO MUCH I LOVE SMS SO MUCH :DDDDDDD
Unrelated, but there’s a Minecraft youtuber with the same name as you, Mysticat. I’m just wondering if you already knew that.
@@Periwinkleaccountyeah i did lol, i didnt know until i got his video recommened a few days after i changed my name, hes a great content creator too
@@zMysticat Okay.
For the trial thing, let's just say there's a good reason the TTYD Piantas are mobsters.
Putting Humans in would definitely have been Sonic 6 vibes lol
39:48 I think it has something to do with mario 128 which was supposed to be a Game cube mario game but eventually was turned into pikmin
It was never a game. Just a demo. The GameCube is good at rendering up to 128 small objects. The manta boss at its smallest size would be 128 pieces if they were all active at once.
Oh damn! its been a minute. I remember Icebergs such a cool trend a couple months ago. Great video man.
Get this man a lozenge
I used to talk with Particular Mushroom on Twitter about Pina Park! Did alot of trick discovery and sent him just about everything ive found
21:10 i'm pretty sure they were eventually found to have stolen pretty much everything they ever did
24:20 either because they thought no one would notice, or forgot/time constrights flooded isle delfino using an older version of the map. Manholes are in different places among other things. Its actually pretty... Uncanny? Things you can see but are way out of the way suddenly being different for a little while.
Such an awesome game I usually try to play it every summer to get in the vibe
Underrated RUclipsr
i needed this. sms is so good
35:46 there exists a gif of a game hack with Mario picking up Toadsworth, a Blue Toad, and Peach and throwing them off the airstrip
I don't think that E. Gadd gave or sold that paintbrush to Bowser Jr. He most definitely stole it.
Bowser totally bribed the entire court.
You don’t get both the sunglasses and shirt for 30 shines, to get them both you need all shines in the game
That was an interesting video! I love this game, but I always wished they would have taken more time to develop it because it could have been more fleshed out
You think Mario's trial was bad?? Have you ever played Chrono Trigger??
The only way I know for Mario to take more than 1 damage point at once is by getting hit by a bullet bill
“Makes people more helpful” is probably referring to a study where people who played sunshine where more willing to help and be cooperative in tasks then people who where playing call of duty. I remember hearing about it on another video somewhere (Edit) someone else probably said this nvm-
Awesome iceberg video!
