As a drummer I don't know how one can watch this video and not be inspired. Jojo is a master plain and simple. Whether or not you like his music, there is no denying his technique and his musicality. Truly inspiring...
I've been playing drums for 30 years. I've played with pop, dance, hard rock and even country bands and have played many gigs from private parties to city functions to dozens of dark and dingy bars. I have a beautiful Pearl Studio custom set with Tama hardware and a full set of gorgeous Zildjian A custom cymbals. And I'm going to put my drumkit out on my driveway, set it on fire, and never play again. After seeing this video, I have no right to ever play drums again. This is mind-blowing.
he plays with immense amounts of finesse, but if you watch his dvd or read any interviews he talks about how he used to squeeze really really hard, just goes to show even the best suck once. I swear by Jojo's signature stick, I've been using it for the past year and a half without thinking of switching. love this video too!
As good as it is on video, it is better in person. This is for all practical purposes the exact solo he did at a clinic I recently attended. He went in great depth about his reverse engineering of drumming. He is a master in many ways.
@allmetaliswelcome quite simple. because he was on the 2nd snare. he uses the same stick on the hi-hat. he leaves the butt of the stick on the drum. so the motion is like cross-sticking, except he's hitting the hi-hat instead of the rim of the drum. i've seen videos of him doing this from another angle.
he's like a mad scientist. I love how much fun he has with all the different sounds you can make with one drum. Or a leprechaun with a bag of magic tricks
wow very good analogy i really love it. I love when people compare music to language, speech and expression etc. But just dont say that you want to quit playing because he is soo good.
I love the fact he can take a drum'n'bass sound and make it 100% his own. Mayer is one of the best drummers around and simply put, if you dont like his work, then don't listen. But it's your loss.

@MadmanMoon /word! Other drummers play a ten minutes solo which gets more boring at the time, but his solos are so entertaining at every pont of time.
@TheLiesette, idk, looks a little too big to be a 16" to me, i think it's an 18" but that's just my thoughts, and i tuned my pretty crappy(i muffled my kit, cuz my neighbors hate me) so when i put those thin rubber pads on my kit, i only put 1/3 on my floor tom, and use the 2/3 part of the head as a regular drum, but usually i would get some muffling rings, or something, or at least a pack of moongels
3:46 Hold on while I completely unscrew my hi hat, take off the top part and sit it on my 2nd snare. Do you guys mind if I keep playing the whole time?
I first got into drum and bass when I hear Incubus. Hearing the dnb influences in what Jose Pasilas did was quite exciting. Never heard anything like that before. Then I hear Jojo Mayer and I'm damn! That is amazing.
I really don't understand what he was doing at 3:04 but he doesn't get a double bass pedal because he can play double bass with only one peddle letting him be able to use his hi hat if he wants to. (Look at his other performances) I personally think his technique of playing double bass on one pedal is mind blowing.
check him out with depart, his jazz group or with janek gwizdala, "Dave Marks Bootlegs: The Janek Gwizdala Band Live in London" is a good vid on youtube, he plays completely different there.
nikhilesh93: At 9:17 he starts a regular double stroke roll and then at 9:20 he only starts playing it faster. In a sextuplet feel. And spreads it to both snares with some hand crossing and stuff. So it's just a double stroke roll. Only completely insane. ;)
it looks/sounds like he was using his left foot to tighten/muffle the bass drum head to get that sound. and the tom slide is just hit it, then push down with even pressure but slide your hand up the tom and it will stretch the head more as you go up it
@HicksUTS I'm not talking about his hands making it look sped up. It's how fast his head twitches and his the very tip of his elbow at times. I'm full aware he can play that fast with his hands and feet, but when his upper body twitches, it looks unnatural.
Jojo, IMO, is the best all-around drummer(Technique,Speed,Creativity/Originality,Groove,Timing) these days. Now don't get me wrong, there are plenty of excellent drummers out there, and I've seen alot of win from many others. But there's always that one person who is doing alot for their instrument, I believe it to be him at this time. If I may say so, I'd say he is the current day Buddy Rich(if not better) :)
now to be this is a drum solo! This is a lot better then all those solos where they just do fast chops on the snare or toms. This solo is a lot more musical and more enjoyable to listen to
plus the pitch of his cymbals especially the ride proves clearly that it is not sped up. if the video is sped up it defintely would have changed the pitch of the cymbals and as for me who have listened to a tons of jojo mayer videos, i know how his drums sound by heart and plus he is using the same cymbals as normal
In my eyes, hes the best, but really in all honestly, there are so many good drummers, you can't really pick "the best" Jo jo is def at the top with others.
@Lyrasone Brother, I'm talking old Royster. When he was 9 or 10 he jammed Fusion Jazz with some amazing cats. I know Royster know is just a chopsey tool. Back in his day though, before his mind was filled with new age hip-hop garbage, he sounded truly great.
it seems to me jojo mayer isn't afraid to reveal who he is in his music. Its a very colorful style and highly skilled. Interested in the rhythm foremost. Many popular drummers are focused on dark beats usually expressed through inordinate use of cymbal and very fast tempo.
Does anyone actually realise thomas lang used to play drums for kylie minogue, and pop idol!! How can he not be a player! Stop judging him on his 3 dvds!! Its almost like people dont want to like him because of his abilities, theres a reason why thomas is at the top of his game. I totally agree with anyone saying hes not the best drummer but seriously, just enjoy what he does!
Uses hihat 1 to bounce on tightly clamped hi hat 2, making him able to carry out sustained hihat hits with just 1 foot to free up the other hand to rock the rim, 0.0
crazy how much his style has changed in the last 10-15 years. i found some old ass videos off him (i THINK they where from the early 90's) and he used to be a bit of a shredder. its all good though.
Normally he switches between a 14x12 and a 13x11, but Jojo changes his setup so much depending on what sounds he is looking for that I wouldnt be surprised if he started using a 20" one day. Jojo is so unpredictable its really hard to say how big that is.
As a drummer I don't know how one can watch this video and not be inspired. Jojo is a master plain and simple. Whether or not you like his music, there is no denying his technique and his musicality. Truly inspiring...
Drum machines were made to make crazier beats than any human could possibly play...
Then this bastard comes along!
Gotta love Jojo Mayer
10 years later,
I came back to watch this awesomeness again :)
He plays the beats machines normally play.
This guy IS a machine.
True icon this man!

What he does on 8:32 to 9:07 is simply amazing.
Mg. He is a machine, Just... Fantastic, One of the greats, and will go down in history as just that. Still more to come! LEGEND!
Couldn't say it better myself!
Jojo Mayer is the creativest drummer out there.
he plays with immense amounts of finesse, but if you watch his dvd or read any interviews he talks about how he used to squeeze really really hard, just goes to show even the best suck once. jojo ur awesome...great DNB solo..ur an awesome drummer...keep doin wat u do best..and sabian...u did great by endorsing ur cymbals to such a legend
As good as it is on video, it is better in person. This is for all practical purposes the exact solo he did at a clinic I recently attended. He went in great depth about his reverse engineering of drumming. He is a master in many ways.

this man had such a big influence on me. i am absolutely grateful
Unbelievable. Just pure joy to watch and listen to.
Not even a machine can keep up with Jojo. No programmer/producer could even dream up the figures he does in this master class. Jojo is brilliant.
The whole vid is simply stunning...
he's like a mad scientist. I love how much fun he has with all the different sounds you can make with one drum. Or a leprechaun with a bag of magic tricks
Oh my God, that ride cymbal to his left sounds absolutely incredible. His playing is also flawless. Amazing
this is the best solo i've ever seen!!!!
@meowskull he was using his foot to apply pressure to the bass head in turn changing the sound of the drum. if you listen again you can hear it.
@Genecidedrummer the thing is that jojo mayer is reallly reallly versatile so he can play many styles pretty well
iv only just seen this guy and hes fucken amizing!!! one of the best iv seen so far
This dude is one of my favorites
@SpankyWhispette i think you can see it the best when he is standing up at 3:00 that its not sped up. it looks perfectly natural.
wow very good analogy i really love it. I love when people compare music to language, speech and expression etc. But just dont say that you want to quit playing because he is soo good.

jojo mayer is not of this world.....amazing!
@TheLiesette, idk, looks a little too big to be a 16" to me, i think it's an 18" but that's just my thoughts, and i tuned my pretty crappy(i muffled my kit, cuz my neighbors hate me) so when i put those thin rubber pads on my kit, i only put 1/3 on my floor tom, and use the 2/3 part of the head as a regular drum, but usually i would get some muffling rings, or something, or at least a pack of moongels
exactly man inspiration is the what makes me keep getting up everyday!
What a stunningly good performance.
3:46 Hold on while I completely unscrew my hi hat, take off the top part and sit it on my 2nd snare. Do you guys mind if I keep playing the whole time?
The cymbal on the left is a Sabian AAX El Sabor Picante Hand Crash 18".
@HydraulicSandwich Changing the tension of the bass drum skin with the left foot and playing it with the right.
jojo mayer is amazing
thats all i have to say
lol its drum and bass guys stop complaining about the style if its not your cup of tea, this video was amazing!
lol, this is awesome.., didnt realized i watched the hole 10minutes, is so much fun to watch Jojo
I first got into drum and bass when I hear Incubus. Hearing the dnb influences in what Jose Pasilas did was quite exciting. Never heard anything like that before. Then I hear Jojo Mayer and I'm damn! That is amazing.
yup. you're right. that's what I was leaning toward saying, but you made it clearer. peace
he's putting one put on the bass drum and using the pedal with the other. that tightens the bass drum, producing a higher pitched sound.
Man, you best! =)
Respect to Sabian

its an awesome sounding ride! do you useually use a brighter more rock sounding ride?
@0509killer it's his solo. he can whatever he wants.
it looks/sounds like he was using his left foot to tighten/muffle the bass drum head to get that sound. and the tom slide is just hit it, then push down with even pressure but slide your hand up the tom and it will stretch the head more as you go up it

breathtaking

Whew! I just found my new favorite drummer.
this is definitely on my top 3 drum solos!
or top 2..... ok ok , this is my favorite drum solo! or is it?!!
it blows me away how tight and mathematically consistent he is. Hes more drum machine than man
he s a god. Want that hand speed & endurance, must have taken years to develope such a perfect feeling
the beginning sounds exactly like the solo at the musikmesse in frankfurt 2008
GREAT!

really!
thats really cool man
how many people showed?
did it sound alot better live?
one of the best ever
oh my that is something else, he made that sound amazing
ouch...cramp city. one of the best modern drummers. BR would be proud.
It actually looks like a Sabian hand Crash to me. I friend of me own one and it it very special - but awesome, if you find out how to use it.
Can't wait to have the chops and control to do this.
jo jo owns , he has taste and awsome technique
I thinks one of the geniuses of our time.
most inspiring musisian!
It takes him 4:49 until he hits the primary snare head directly! A good solo can't be rushed!
@gunny69er The traditional grip gives you a different feel than the matched one. No more.
It amazes me how Jojo gets so many different sounds from each drum/cymbal.
You can imitate a lot of crazy drummers out there, but he is one drummer than is very had to imitate. Amazing!
it seems to me jojo mayer isn't afraid to reveal who he is in his music. Its a very colorful style and highly skilled. Interested in the rhythm foremost. Many popular drummers are focused on dark beats usually expressed through inordinate use of cymbal and very fast tempo.
jojo rules,period...
8:30 what does he play between tom and snare? some variation of paradiddle? it's tu freaking fast for me to notice :P
Does anyone actually realise thomas lang used to play drums for kylie minogue, and pop idol!! How can he not be a player! Stop judging him on his 3 dvds!! Its almost like people dont want to like him because of his abilities, theres a reason why thomas is at the top of his game.

@Jazzdrummer83 liat video lain nya lah mas, ini kan lagi show off rhytm -_-" kata nya drummer favorit ....ckckck
Uses hihat 1 to bounce on tightly clamped hi hat 2, making him able to carry out sustained hihat hits with just 1 foot to free up the other hand to rock the rim, 0.0
Incredible!

i wish there another camera on his left side as he is doin some amazing sticking on his side snare
Wow - simply amazing! :O
@SabianVault: Your videos are the best.
Thank you - from a happy subscriber! :D
Jojo mayer and thomas pridgen have the best ghostnotes in the business
@allmetaliswelcome he has a 2nd snare on his left. he was crossticking that
I had to watch that move on the tom at 3:26 and 3:45 about 6 times. What planet is this guy from?
I liked the sequence between 00:01 and 10:21
@sh4p31y yea but he was also playing regularly on the hihat i like right after the crossticking! i guess he's just pro at crosssticking
Wow
i dont play drums and normally the good drummes just sound weird to me
this seems so great to me
really nice
when he puts both legs in between the snare n floor tom is he alternating the feet on the bass pedal?
ye, i just use moeller because it best suits my playing style. I don't play much very fast stuff like jojo
Normally he switches between a 14x12 and a 13x11, but Jojo changes his setup so much depending on what sounds he is looking for that I wouldnt be surprised if he started using a 20" one day. Jojo is so unpredictable its really hard to say how big that is.
@Leheno that's not really fair to him. his timing is as tight as a drum machine, but he's SO creative and variable in what he plays.
@MadmanMoon my god... damn swiss engineering with their drum robots...
The sounds he can get out of that kit is just fucking amazing...
That groove at 5:41. So sweet
That 17" he is riding at around 2:50, anybody know what it is? It sounds amazing.
My hero.....
Love it
This guy is a fucking freak of nature. 8:32 he's doing that shit with one hand. It shows that he learned a lot of his stuff from Buddy Rich.
