Bill Bergey and Wilbert Montgomery were my favorite Eagles as a little kid. I even played LB in pee wee football and had to wear #66. RIP and thanks for the memories.
Hey Philly Peeps Philly Native grew up in the Mount Airy Section/Germantown in 1978 in August i received 2Tickets to the Eagles Jamboree for Autographs for the Philadelphia Eagles Greats like Wil Montgomery, Harold Carmichael, and the Late Bill Bergey he was a nice person RIP Bill Bergey thanks for your Awesome Career and your Blessings😞Blessings and Condolences to The Bill Bergey Family 🙏🙏🙏🙏🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈
@R.P.E lots of people care. A Philadelphia legendary voice who was nationally heard as the voice of NFL Films. I think of Facenda (plus Summerall, Brookshire, Scully, Kalas, etc) whenever I have to sit through a game listening to Brady's teenager sounding voice and lame comments. It was Facenda's voice on all of those highlight reels of Bill Bergey, the right voice as we watched a master, one of the best ever at his position, and a true leader on the field and locker room. It's a crime Bergey isn't in the NFL HoF. He dominated, period.
@@R.P.E Hows that answer working out for you. Bill...Buuugggghey. I care. Why be so f ing negative. Weird but as a kid me and my brothers always joked that he just jumped on the pile after the tackle was already made. Not sure why we thought that.
Similar to Butkus (although nobody was like Butkus really) , but he roamed that middle linebacker position with the same attitude and a leader. Eagle legend and a great man. RIP Bill Bergey #66 🦅
When I was 9 years old (1971) I attended a junior football camp in Oxford, Ohio where Bergey made a guest appearance and lead some drills. He literally gave me his Bengals t-shirt off his back after autographing it. The shirt reached the ground when I wore it and I could easily put both arms through the same sleeve. It remained a prized possession, which I regularly wore for over 15 years before it finally fell apart. Like Bill it had a great life and I remember him and that shirt quite fondly. RIP Bill.
He had superstar status coming from Cincy....... Cincy's owners the Brown Family, as usual , didn't want to pay their superstars... we traded for him and rewarded him. RIP
My grandfather played pro football after WWII and was teammates with Tom Landry on the New York Yankess football team in 1949. When we'd watch football together in the 1970s, he called them soft and said Jack Lambert was a "long-haired pretty boy", so, what you think was "When football was football", people who were already in their 50s and 60s, felt it had gotten too soft.
Not only an All-Time powerhouse Middle Linebacker, he was also a huge, positive influence to all. R.I.P. Mr. Bergey - you and your teammates uplifted the spirits and hopes to millions in the Philadelphia and surrounding areas!
But when they added him to their defense, it changed everything. The whole team was lifted. Then Tose goes out and gets Vermeil and it exponentially grows. It was what led to their first Super Bowl appearance. I equate them adding Bergey to when the Phillies added Pete Rose. Those moves changed the mindset of both their respective teams.
I remember the Eagles of the 70s they were really blue collar players. Then when we made it to the Super Bowl exciting times we even had the owner gambling in the casinos.
@Mike-ij9vj When the casinos opened in Atlantic City, Tose was doomed. Gambled his life away. A trucking magnate, he lost those businesses and ownership of the Eagles. Then we got Braman, probably in the top 5 of worst owners of all time. His cheapness was only rivaled by his hiring Rich Kotite to replace Buddy Ryan. Whenever that period enters my mind, I remember two things-losing Reggie White and hiring Rich Kotite. Im reminded of idiot owners like what we had in Braman by the recent idiocy of Jerry Jones, and the constant idiocy of Woody Johnson. (Of course, I laughed my head off when the Jets immediately snapped up Kotite, although Johnson wasn't the owner yet.)
The first Eagles player who my mother learned about after she came to this country. My brother met him a few years back and had a memorable experience!! RIP, sir.
I remember when comedian Joe Conklin did an immitation of Bergey (Which was good) on WIP 610. They brought Bergey on later with Conklin in the studio and asked Bergey about it, and Bergey just dismissed Conklin as a "Rapidly going bald jerk." 🤣😂 RIP Mr. Bergey, I will never forget that.
Those of us who remember when the Eagles became a playoff team in the late 70’s after so many years of mediocrity won’t ever forget this all-time great linebacker. I never got to know him, but friends of mine who did said he was also a great guy..RIP….
I was from the Philly area and was of coarse very familiar with Bill Bergey. But i also got to meet him and spend several days in close proximity to him. A buddy and i had gone to a large remote provincial park in Quebec Canada on a camping/fishing trip. There were a few other groups at the same location, and Bill was with one of those groups. Both my friend and i recognized and approached him. We had several conversations with him during our stay, and each of us had a picture taken with him. He was a very nice easy to like type of a guy, and i have thought of him often.
Intense. I think that described Bill's playing style and his approach to life. Still remember a TV crew covering him watching his kid play lacrosse for the Wings. Ref called something on his kid and Bill was ready to jump on the floor and go at the whole world. RIP.
I remember when the Eagles practiced at Widener in the 70's. I would never jump into a pool if I thought it was too cold. Toe dipper. Bill Bergey was there also. He told me if I didn't jump in he would climb out of the pool and throw me in. I didn't and he climbed out and threw me in the pool. Since then I jump right in the water. R.I.P. Bill Bergey. 🥨
Man do I miss the days when we wore pads to play football and not running around in Danskins like they do here in the 21st century. Run wild, brother Bill.
YUP RG Conrad Dobler Dobler was today's version of Ritchie Cognito ,,, DIRTY......... the very next yr in the NFC title gm vs Dallas Bergey was dragging that knee around ... he was never the same player after that Dobler hit
When football was football the artificial turf where great players go to the old folks home at fifty it's a shame these guys played with broken bones and concussions hit like hammers and winning was everything cause the money wasn't
I’ve been a Washington fan my whole life but growing up in Philly as a kid you knew who #66 was. When McDonalds had the Eagles drinking glasses he was the one everybody wanted. 🫡
Sad. One of the best players in Philadelphia Eagles history.

#55 Frank Lemaster died a few years ago of CTE
@@tecumseh22I did not know that. Sad news to hear. So many great great memories of Bergey and LeMaster in the 70’s. Them were the days!
You were in my neighborhood lived by Finely Playground on Dorset Street. Homie 😊@@RobertIsaacJr.
Not only a great LB, but an amazing person and asset to the Community. RIP to Beloved Legend.
I have been an Eagles fan since 1962, I've seen all the greatest players, I love great defense, and Bergey was great defense. RIP and thanks
A great loss. Bergey was an incredible middle linebacker.
Sad news indeed. Great guy who was always gracious to his fans. Sending prayers to his family at this time.
John Facenda the voice of God, greatest NFL highlights ever, and will never be repeated again.
Not one person cares here about that. Total distraction away from the point of the context of the video.
@@R.P.E that's your opinion. FACENDA was awesome.

Great story. It's always great when you hear how the meanest guys on the field are the most considerate off of it.
That's awesome to hear. I liked Bill great player in my book. He will be missed for sure. Rip
Dick Vermeil loved this guy! RIP Bill.........
RIP number 66
Loved watching you play
He was beloved in Philly and about the most eloquent of speakers in all of professional sports.
awesome NFL Films stuff
One of the most brutal linebackers ever, Bill Bergy was a beast. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time 🙏
He was relly a beast when he played MLB in a 4-3 ..... in his younger Cincy days, he had cartoon speed could run sideline to sideline
Bill Bergey was a Great Middle Linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles 🦅 #66 put a hit on you and you knew you were hit. RIP

RIP Mr. Bill Bergey. I can still remember that infamous feud with OG Conrad Dober. It was Fierce.
A great eagle in his time RIP!
R.I.P to Bill. He was a great player and a great leader for the team back in the 70s and early 80s.
The Quintessential Eagle! He was loved and will be missed!
Rest in peace, Bill. One of our many legends of our team.
Bergey was the first puzzle piece to a Super Bowl. He gave the team respect.
That makes me sad. I remember watching him as a boy.
Rest in peace 🙏
I was born in the late 70s and had two older brothers, of course my first eagles jersey was a hand me down Kelly green bergey #66
Great player & great man!

Eagles had a great linebacker crew in the late 80s. God Bless Bergey. He was also a good talker
The definition of Football is players like Bill Bergey. RIP and my condolences to his family.
Bill Burgey was the best, for a team that didn’t have much

Very sad news
I am pretty sure that when Bergey was a Bengal he gave Bradshaw a pretty mean forearm to the chin. When Bergey hit you you knew it.
He once threw mud at a ny giant while in the giants sideline surrounded alone after a tackle.
