One Ray Lewis doesn't play in the same conference so he doesn't crowd hawk out of the pro bowl. I don’t think people understand that Hawk’s dependability was a huge part of why that Packers defense was so good. Hawk’s adaptability to close off areas of the field meant Matthews could literally line up in a track stance and sprint into the backfield. That defense played so aggressively it felt like the Packers were on offense. It’s a team sport, and he was an ultimate team player.
I was at Ohio State when it was AJ Hawke, Bobby "The General" Carpenter, and Anthony Schlegal. It was fun to watch them play and put people into the ground. I am so proud AJ Hawke gets to represent that era of Buckeyes every day on the PMS.
AJ Hawk is a menace to society: drives with two feet, falls asleep at the wheel, doesn't turn the engine off while getting gas, driving golf carts into water hazards, destroying the set of the Pat McAfee show, and may be a certified soaker.
The fear his opponents would experience was wild. A video was released showing how ferocious and dangerous AJ was, performing side kicks at a rate which had only been seen from the likes of Chuk Norris. This video would make its way around locker rooms in the league, I heard Marshall Faulk cried for nearly an hour after watching the previously mentioned Kicking Hawk. Good vid tho, just surprised you left this fact out.
Most years your defense was not a priority. AJ held down a crew known for being "bend-but-don't-break" monsters that forced long drives and field goals so Aaron and the boys on offense could build a lead. They still managed to put together some great defenses but it was a lot of just being a hindrance to the opposing offense.
He was an awful run defender. He was the absolute king of over pursuing and getting cut back on. There are so many film breakdown and gradings of how mid he was as a linebacker overall. He did jump on the pile at the end of the play though. Racked up those "tackles".
@jblou I don't hate him, he was just a replacement level linebacker overall in the NFL. If you look up his run defender stats you would know he couldn't paralyze someone with a gun. He racked up tackles 6 yards past the line of scrimmage. Tackles are a stat that tell you nothing about a players skill.
