What happened to dodgeball?
@@wjrasmussen666 It failed to dodge the wrench.
Mary you just don't know what you got yourself into lol... This is basically a desguised James Bond movie for an old Sean Connery, the first James Bond on film... So now you will have to start your James Bond Journey x3
What happened to "Dodgeball" ??
Knots is nautical miles per hour. HTH.
One of my all time favorite fan theories is that is really a James Bond film. Sean Connery is really reprising his role as James Bond
Supposedly someone measured the time line and it works out. The original 007 was busted, then disavowed & stuck in prison.
Ditto.
Connery's character definitely would fit as James Bond fan fiction.
The James Bond timeline actually fits perfectly to the events mentioned in the movie.
The Pentex Productions channel made a video about this theory.
The Rock is Michael Bay's best work imo, great action sequences anchored by surprisingly compelling writing that can go from serious/emotional to just funny as hell without feeling out of place, plus an iconic soundtrack by Hans Zimmer (this is also one of my fave Zimmer soundtracks). Will always love this movie
Written by Tarantino!
@@Jutrzen That would explain some of the snappier than usual dialogue for a Bay theme. He also had some involvement with Crimson Tide too I believe.
@@corneliussmiff2773🤡
Tarantino knows how to write better than Direct @@Jutrzen True Romance is a testiment to that
Oh you're so edgy.@@heyitsthatmoviedude1627
13:06 Fun fact about the man who gets his humvee stolen. That is Hans Struhar, a Hollywood costumer. 11 years after this movie premieres, he would appear again in National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets which also featured Nicolas Cage and Ed Harris.
He gets a humvee stolen in this movie for a chase sequence. In National Treasure 2, his range rover is stolen for a car chase sequence as well.
These are the only two acting roles he's had in his entire Hollywood career
Despite their age differences I love that Stanley and Mason bonded over being fathers. They held together and fought for their kids.
🤡
This, Con Air and Face/Off are the trifecta of 1990's Nick Cage action movies.
I agree. Very enjoyable movies
All time great action film. Nick Cage and Sean Connery were an awesome team. Rest in Peace Mr. Bond. James Bond.
Yes, when he passed away I watched a marathon of his movies to celebrate his life and career. RIP Sean Connery.
I’m gonna do the samething for Clint Eastwood and Jack Nicholson when they pass away
Trivia time! When the SEALs go in, only two people were actors, the rest of the SEAL Team were active duty Navy SEALs from SEAL Team Six. They argued with the director that no SEAL Team would ever allow themselves to be caught in such a bad spot as the bottom of that shower room. They tried to get the director to change the team to Green Berets. Haha military humor.
They underestimated the idiocy of Michael Bay.
This was part of the Nicolas Cage 3-pack of great action movies from late 90's that were awesome. The Rock, Con Air and Face/Off. 3 amazing action movies!
Nic Cage was eating quite well in the 90s.
@@Arkainjel oh yes indeed. Lots of fun and big time movies.
Face off was ballbag
Holy trinity of CAGEISM
And Snake Eyes
Fun fact: the pilot who drops his bombs just before they're called off was played by a then unknown Jim Caveziel, later known for his roles on "Person of Interest" and "Passion of the Christ"
Despite being 66 years old at the time, Sean Connery was in excellent physical shape and actually did a lot of his own stunts in this movie. The scene where he and Goodspeed were swimming under the water with the flames above them, was actually Connery, he insisted on doing the scene himself. In his early years before becoming an actor, Connery was both a boxer and a bodybuilder and he continued to exercise daily for the majority of his life.
2:10 This part has honestly always made me so sad; the General truly is a hero who's been pushed to the edge and believes these drastic measures are the only way forward.
Ed Harris is so good. One of the best "doing bad things for good reasons" villains.
I am literally mind blown. THE ROCK is absolutely one of Michael Bay's best movies, thanks to its off the charts action sequences and incredible performances by Nicolas Cage and Sean Connery.
And uncredited screenplay contributions by Aaron Sorkin and Quentin Tarantino
@@najhoant🤡
Speaking of Sean Connery, I highly urge you to check out his performance in THE UNTOUCHABLES (1987). He won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for that one (he is the only James Bond actor to date to be nominated for (let alone win) an Oscar).
One school of thought is that Mr Connery's character in The Rock actually IS James Bond.
There is a great video on RUclips about how this is Connery's final Bond movie.
Hummel is hands-down of the greatest villains of all time. His cause was just, it was honorable, and it represents something that happens in the world on a daily basis.
24:09 In this moment Stanley is the fearless professional and Mason almost freezes up. It’s subtle but it’s good to see they show there are different kinds of bravery.
Actually, for me this is a call back on times when Q would reprimand Bond.
A "knot" is 1 nautical mile per hour. A nautical mile is about 1.15 miles. So, 300 knots is about 345 mph.
That eliminates you being a field agent.
Incredible movie, one of the best action movies of the 90's.
The soundtrack is absolutely iconic as well.
Yes indeed !!!
It's unofficially, officially a James Bond movie in my book.
Nicolas Cage was born Nicolas Coppola. He's the nephew of director Francis Ford Coppola. He's best known for his action movies, but his one Oscar win was for a more dramatic, serious role in Leaving Las Vegas (1995). It's not a light hearted movie. It's a tough movie to watch, but well worth it.
Ed Harris was great in Apollo 13 (1995). The Man Who Would be King (1975), The Untouchables (1987), and The Hunt for Red October (1990) are some great Sean Connery films.
I would also add Ed Harris and his performance in The Abyss.
18:00 Mason is basically a dangerous man and is highly trained. It's mostly down to the fact that he see's Stanley's physical behavior that already gives it away. He knew Stanley was putting up a brave facade the instant the doors opened and they were introduced to each other.
Carla was played by Vanessa Marcil. She was on the soap opera General Hospital for a while, and Las Vegas.
This movie ,arks Cage's transition from arthouse to hollywood movie. In Con Air he takes his action hero status up another notch. It's just as entertaining
This is hands down the best action movie ever. I can't not be captivated whenever I watch it, fantastic plot, action sequences, and soundtrack.
The 80's & 90's were truly a blessed time for action films.
One of my very very favourite movies. Pure entertainment and the amount of charisma these actors have...
One of my favourite Action Movies of all-time, and a truly stellar cast. Sean Connery was The Man.
My karate teacher in Middle School was a stunt man in this movie, he was very proud when he came back from filming and bought all his students tickets to the movie as well.
Great reaction, love The Rock, totally agree with you about Ed Harris, really feel that he sometimes doesent get the kudus he deserves as an actor compared to some of his peers such as the De Niro's and Pacino's of this world
Sean and Nick make this film as good as it is. Love this film! Thanks for reacting to this classic!😊😊
As mentioned in other comments , the time line does match up for this to be a James Bond movie . I have also seen in an interview that it was done on purpose . There is no doubt in my mind that Sean Connery's character is James Bond .
“Welcome to the Rock!”
Hi Mary, look at you with a double feature today!😊 Awesome!👏👏 Another high action Nicolas Cage film with an all star cast is "Con Air" (1997). Great reactions to this action packed film with a stacked cast, Mary!!!🎬👏👏👏👏
Dodgeball was taken down as she said "Necrophilia" which could possibly violate TOS. Or she took it down because it was out of sync. Either or.
IIRC, the marines were about to fire first but one of them caused some of the balcony rubble to fall which spooked the seals into firing
A lot of folks will tell you that John Mason is actually James Bond but for legal reasons I need to stress that they are definitely not the same character. HOWEVER Connery did admit in an interview that he played Mason as if he was Bond so I guess it's really up to you if you want to accept this movie as James Bond canon or not :D
Mason was pretty much James Bond in every way possible except the name... and I'm okay with that. One of my favorite Nic Cage films, as well as one of my favorite Connery films (outside of his Bond films).
Fantastic reaction this movie always holds a special place for me it was the first movie I ever saw in theaters parents took me less than a year old and didn't cry yell nothing just watched the whole movie wide eye I think it's part of the reason I'm a movie fanatic haha
An interesting thing about this movie is back in '95, of course before the internet, no one knew this movie was being made. If you watch Nick Cage's speech after winning the Oscar for Best Actor in 1995 for Leaving Las Vegas, he says, "We're working on a little project I'm sure you'll all love called The Rock".
Didn't realize it at the time but I think he knew they were making a special movie. As it turns out he was right.
Well that sux, i watch half of Dodgeball, go walk the dog & eat something, come back & has been replaced by The Rock which everyone on RUclips is reacting to right now.
There are fan theories that "John Mason" is actually a cover name for his actual (cover) name, which is "James Bond".
Have you watched pitch black with Vin Diesel??
General Francis X. Hummel / Ed Harris Is probably the best Anti-Villain in any movie or tv show ever. So good.
The Man siting behind Nick Cage in the helicopter at the 17:49 min mark is My cuzn Retired Navy Seal Carlos Sandoval!!!
After all these years this still gets me in the feels. Jerry Bruckheimer sound of the music, my wife LOVES this one. Always a best date night!
You should watch these films, Ghost and The Hustler, The Colour of Money, Star Trek Generations, Home Alone, Home Alone 2, Timecop, Bloodsport. Crimson Tide.
Merry Christmas Mary ❤🎄🎁
Omg lmao .. i am binge watching your videos .. the rock is such a good movie .. ive seen it so many times !! Stanleys freak outs cracked me up everytime
As stated, it's so much fun watching this movie and pretending we're watching the original Bond in action.
The SEAL Team leader was Michael Biehn; Kyle Reese from The Terminator.
Besides Ghost Rider, another good Cage action movie is Con Air, with John Malkovich. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer (Transformers).
I personally like The Sorcerer's Apprentice, where Cage plays a slightly crazy wizard, with Alfred Molina as the villain.
Knotts are nautical miles, 300 knotts is roughly 330 MPH or something like 530 kph. Which is strange because its like 15x slower than they actually go
Aw hell yeah! Con Air (1997) is a must!
You should absolutely marathon the James Bond series, Connery to Craig.
Jen Murray has already done it on her channel. Every Bond film, in order. It would be difficult to do it any better.
@@nightfall902 🤔 Audiobook readings with the surviving cast.
@@WreckingWood Almost as good as reading them yourself, and without the risk of paper cuts from page turning.
6:25 General Hummel means to say “Know your place”
17:55 He knows cuz of years of experience. Also based on Stanley’s behavior & reaction towards the situation. But the hint of which he suspected was when he met him 1st in the interrogation room. Educated man vs being an anti-terrorist agent. The FBI.
33:40 No, the Marines didn’t shoot first. It was the Navy SEAL team that did cuz of that 1 guy loosing his cool in an intense situation. He reacted too soon cuz he thought the Marines started blasting them.
"Keep your secrets!" 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣‼
One of my favorite scores from Hans Zimmer. Ever. There’s Pirates of the Caribbean. There’s Lion King. And then there’s the Rock.
Gladiator would be my favorite score of his
For reference, a knot is 1 nautical mile (1.1508 land miles), and 300 knots is 555.6 km/h or 345.234 mph.
You should watch "The Island". A really unique movie directed by James Bay.
The protagonist depends on whose point of view you are looking from. There are possibly 3 protagonists. The antagonists are truly the psychotic marines. Hummel was on a quest for justice. The other antagonists could be general Kramer (I think that's his name). Stanley's quest to disarm the rockets. In this story, Hummel still isn't an antagonist (well, not completely anyway).
Another movie of Michael Bay's that not many people know about is The Island. It's a really good underrated movie. It stars Scarlet Johansson and Ewan McGregor.
Fun times in the 80’s included figuring out what genre or actor we were going to focus our movie rentals for the weekends. We’d have a Harrison Ford weekend, Mel Gibson, Charlie Sheen, Meg Ryan or we’d do comedy, drama, horror or whatever. The worst was when you get to the video store and they ran out of copies to rent. ☹️
I've got such pleasant memories of watching this in the theater back im the day. I'm always happy to see someone reacting to it. Thank you for this!
This, and 13 Hours, are some of the best stuff Michael Bay has ever done. He was a huge Tom Clancy fan, and doing that kind of high risk action is probably what he's best at.
So there was a fan theory for a while that Sean Connery's charcter was actually James Bond since John Mason is MI6 and James Bond was MI6 plus Connery is the original James Bond. But one of the producers denied the connection. But it does fit if you think about it, James Bond is a Secret Agent so he would have no real identity either.
Don’t forget that Hummel also didn’t work with the two “bad” captains before. They weren’t “his” men.
This has probably already been mentioned, but I wanted to point out that the men who initially fired on the Navy SEALS and the ones who wanted to fire the rockets at the end, were not technically Hummel's men. Hummel paired up with another group of Marines that he apparently knew would be sympathetic to his cause.
This is easily one of my all time favorite movies. I actually went to see this movie at the theater when it came out......after taking mushrooms. Lets just say, it ended up being one of the most intense movie experiences of my life. lol This movie was extra special because it was a sleeper hit. The movie at the time that was getting all the hype was Independence Day. So The Rock, wasn't really being discussed much, and it went under the radar.
The one part of the movie that I didn't really agree with was the Navy SEALS vs the Marines in the showers. Yes, the Marines had the high ground, thus giving them the advantage. But on the other hand, they are facing the Navy SEALS, some of the most elite marksmen on the planet. Yet somehow the SEALS don't score a single kill on the Marines during that shootout? Yeah, that wouldn't happen. They may lose in the end, but there's no way the other side gets away unscathed.
I have a severe allergy to tree nuts
When my doctor gave me my first epipen and was explaining how to use it
She said i could inject it into my bicep, thigh or... abdomen
I immediately thought about the Rock and was like "Nope! Thigh is just fine thank you!"
Ed Harris is an underrated actor. I don't think there's a role he can't do well.
Harris surprised me with his role in the movie Just Cause, which also featured Sean Connery.
Bad Boys is another good Michael Bay movie which you already reacted to. I actually really really like Bad Boys II (2003) just as much as the first movie. So if you want to check that out you can. Another personal favourite of mine is Armageddon (1998), starring Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck and Liv Tyler. It is a disaster movie, but it is a fun movie to watch, and always gets me in the feels for some reason.
I love this film. Hans Zimmer's score for this is awesome as well.
Some people are already floating this in the comments, so I'm putting this out. Mason is not James Bond.
At most, he's James Bond in the same way that say William Munny in Unforgiven is the same character that Clint Eastwood played in The Dollars Trilogy or any other of his classic Western. It's a metaphorical link not a literal one. Mason can only be Bond is you ignore every Bond film except Connery's.
You might think "well James Bond is a codename given to different agents over the years".
Except it doesn't work at all. James Bond is a book character created by Ian Fleming. He has a backstory and an inner life. He was born in Scotland to wealthy parents (scots Father, swiss Mother). Parents died in an accident when he was young. Went to boarding school in England. Joined the Navy during WW2 and became a secret agent after the war. He attained the rank of Commander. He is one man. The lack of aging of the character through all the novels is simply due to them using a floating timeline. Think Spider-Man (Peter Parker). He was a teen in the 1960's but in the 2020's he's only in his mid-20's.
The Bond movies work on the same principle. From Sean Connery in Dr. No all the way to Pierce Brosnan in Die Another Day, Bond is the same man. 007 is a codename but James Bond isn't. Bond is always friends with CIA agent Felix Leiter (who also changes actor so why would they be friends all the time if they're different men.) David Hedison who played Leiter opposite Roger Moore played the role again opposite Timothy Dalton and they were still best friends. Even though actor John Terry played Leiter in Dalton's previous film.
Every Bond flirts with Moneypenny, and she never treats him differently even though Lois Maxwell played the role for 3 Bonds.
Every Bond likes their vodka martini "shaken not stirred". All of them are hedonistic. They're not different men.
George Lazenby Bond got married and widowed to Tracy in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Agent Amasova tells Roger Moore Bond that he had a wife that was killed and he quickly shut her off because it hurts him. He visits Tracy's grave in For Your Eyes Only. Leiter tells his wife that Dalton Bond his widowed.
Also, when Dalton Bond goes rogue in Licence to Kill everybody still calls him James Bond and keeps using the name even though he quit MI6 for a mission of revenge. He doesn't start using his real name or a new alias.
TLDR: The James Bond codename theory is bunk. It's the Bond fan equivalent of a conspiracy theory and it's mostly casual fans who espouses it (since they don't recall the details that do unite the Bonds together). The Bond films are moslty standalones and the continuity loose (especially pre-Daniel Craig).
theres so many reasons people love this movie its just so good
100% recommend watching Armageddon after this. Michael Bay had pure fun making both these films. He pretty much aims for fun and shock value for his films more than realism and hes good at it.
Loved your reaction!! The Rock is one of the BEST movies I've ever watched and I'm still watching it. I recommend you to react more Nic Cage movies (Con-Air, Face/Off, for example) They are also excellent action movies that will blow your mind!!
Greetings from Argentina 🇦🇷 and wish you Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
I visited alcatraz like 10 years ago and it was a bucket list item of mine .. it did not disappoint ❤ so cool
Sean Connery was actually just 65 when they shot this, that's not 'much older' than his character. There is a wider gap between Harrison Ford's real age and the age of Indiana Jones in the Dial of Destiny. Remember they were both born into a world where smoking was trendy, and smoking causes premature aging of the skin.
During script writing production wanted Sean Connery's character to be named "James Bond" and the original plot was to have "James Bond" captured by USA while on a mission there. However due to some rights conflicts with the "Bond" franchise eventually they couldnt use the name "James Bond" so they renamed the character as "Patrick Mason" and changed his rank from "Commander" (the naval rank of James Bond in books/films) to "Captain" (infantry/Marine rank) to avoid that. But they still modelled "Mason" after James Bond. And indeed if u look carefully he is just an aged British agent of 00 rank plus with all the assets and attributes of the original James Bond except the name.
However this enhanced the theory of the Bond fans that "James Bond" isnt an actual name but more like an alias used by several members of the 00's of MI6.
This was director Michael Bay's follow-up to Bad Boys, then followed up with Armageddon, Bad Boys 2, Pearl Harbor, the first five live action Transformers movies and 13 Hours. This features United States Marines and Navy SEALS
Connery Sean Connery, there can be only one he is an immortal..
I actually met Ed Harris years ago and I was absolutely impressed with him. He's the genuine article. But ever since then I have a hard time accepting him as a villain. He's just too good a person irl. Some actors are good at playing the villain or antagonist even though they're really nice, like Brian dennehy, good guy irl, excellent villain onscreen. Ed Harris, not so much. He's like a grown up boy scout.
Loved this movie when it came out, I saw it twice. The Rock is a classic and one of Michael Bay's best films.
It's a popular belief that Sean Connery's character of Mason in this, is supposed to be James Bond
🤣🤣🤣his great great grand daughter, she is his daughter.
Technically anything can be turned in to gas at high enough temperatures, so he wasn't lying when he said that a body CAN be vaporized. Whether or not those bombs created a temperature high enough is another matter.
That was actually the penthouse of the Fairmont. I attended a special meeting there last winter. Really nice place. Apparently like $25,000 per night for the entire floor.
I really love this movie. John Mason is supposed to be James Bond. And it's funny to hear Sean Connery swear like a sailor 🤣.
Sean Connery is so cool he steals scenes from Nicolas Cage… That is quite an impressive feat
What I don’t understand is why Mary didn’t mention him in her intro… does she not know Sean Connery?
Check out Nicholas Cage 2nd film Valley Girl 1983. Or, Moonstruck with a surprise co-star.
Valley girl rules
Dunno if anyone will bring this up but the "landing theme" from Final Fantasy 8's demo was similar to The Rocks theme and Square soft changed the song for the full game (but you can hear another song from ff11 called mercs delight that has a similar melody)
It would be really awesome if you follow this up with Face/Off and Con Air. These are arguably the three best Nic Cage flicks.
Lord of war is another of my favorites
Love "The Rock"!
When Michael Bay was at his peak (before his obsession with Transformers. Same can be said with James Cameron. His devotion to Avatar) in the 90s.
Bad Boys, The Rock, and Armageddon! Michael Bay-staples.
I loved the reaction! Thanks for the entertainment. For clarification though. The marines fired first but after that they couldn't hear the general. It is really hard to hear someone next to you, outside, when they are firing. It is near impossible to hear when your inside where the sound reverberates against the walls. Also he was a general in the marines and he only recruited marines to be apart of this and those marines always listened. He has given many and i mean many orders before and they were always followed. No matter what an individual marine thought. So, in his mind the same thing would happen here. He forgot to calculate that these marines were no longer following military law and that they could not listen to him. thanks again.
It’s so funny it’s like Mason is the Rookie now and Nicholas Cage’s Character is the Pro I like how the writers switched that up in this scene.
"they need him for help on the island" ... have you ever watched LOST? It would be a long commitment, but that would be an AMAZING show for you to react to! Years of content!
Another awesome reaction Mary. This is my favourite Michael Bay movie. His most underrated movie has to be The Island. Definitely worth checking out.
There is a theory that Sean Connery is actually portraying a disavowed James Bond. I like it.
Since you love Nicolas Cage, Face/Off with John Travolta is my favorite. You can also see him as Marvel's Ghost Rider. Nice reaction Mary, Nic and Sean were good. Great seeing Michael Biehn. Ed Harris makes a great sagacious villain. Tony Todd was a nice twist.
Love this Movie❤️😍❤️
This movie is one of the best action movies ever . Besides connery cage and Harris, William forsyth, david morse ,John c reliy and bokeem woodbine. It has an all star cast ..
This movie is a stressful, but fun ride. Glad Michael Bay didn't ruin it. The first Transformers movie was good but the rest of them he directed are not.
Everyone did an good job in this movie,. Especially Sean Connery and Ed Harris.
Mary did you recognize one of the soldiers as actor Michael Biehn aka Kyle Reese from Terminator ?
I recommend the movie
The Abyss from 1989 which so happens to also star Ed Harris and Michael Biehn. It's directed by James Cameron.
Ed Harris was also fantastic in The Abyss and Apollo 13.
