I know many people who believe you can not have a good time unless they have alcohol. It is accepted as the norm with many people. They have no idea how to allow themselves to have fun without alcohol.
College culture pushes that idea and many parents accept it as expected.

Same here. I think she’s not only enabling him, she’s taken some moral high ground but she’s just as sick as him. I can’t diagnose anyone else but when someone starts trying to control their drinking, they’re likely an alcoholic. A non addicted brain doesn’t need to try to control their drinking, they don’t need to.

If you tell an alcoholic they can never drink again, it's overwhelming. I'm an alcoholic - I know! Through God's grace and the rooms of AA.... I am sober one day at a time going on 21 years now. They did stop drinking in their tracks with the hospital visit, for a year and a half.... without continued support, an alcoholic will almost always go back to drinking. She's definitely not supportive of him. I hope he goes to rehab for a few months away from her, finds a church support or an AA support because it's obvious he can't do it on his own, and it's obvious he can't do it with her either. I hope he saves himself. My ex died 2 and a half years ago, the doctor told him if he didn't stop drinking that his liver would fail, he was in denial and didn't listen. He died 😢 Unfortunately my not drinking didn't stop him. The only time he didn't drink was when we were riding the Harley, and we pretty much rode everyday, but as soon as he parked it....... 🤦🏼‍♀️

Many people do several rehabs and never stop. Many have to do multiple and then do stop. Many can stop without rehab.

From Friday 5pm when I'd log off from working from home I'd drink straight through to Saturday night, no sleep, no food, for the entirety of the lockdown. Just two day benders every single weekend, even when lockdown finsihed. Lockdown was a training ground for my alcoholism, I drank more than I ever had in my life. Phil zeroed in on Kirsten with a lot of vitriol, meanwhile her husband who is the one struggling with the addiction is told not to even speak at one point; Phil spends more of their time demeaning and berating Kirsten than speaking with Frank. That seems to be the goal...you'll generate more buzz trying to make the wife alone look like The Problem*. Drama and black-and-white thinking are more captivating in this society than good advice offered with kindness and understanding. A real shame.
*To be clear, there may indeed be ways Kirsten was unknowingly enabling him; and also, as she tried to explain, sometimes humans need to test a hypothesis before we can convince our brains that it is true. After a year and a half of not drinking and no longer being in lockdown, I can absolutely understand why in the moment, they might together make the mistake of enabling him to start drinking again. Trying and attempting to do so as mindfully and responsibly as possible (setting rules, etc.) and seeing it fail anyway IS a compelling way to convince yourself that you're actually an alcoholic and can't control your intake, if you weren't convinced before. Learning from our mistakes without shame and with kindness is key.

I'm an alcoholic and i will tell you these people need to just stop lying to them selfs. its not 750ml that he drinks per day. it's 750ml each (as in both) per day. I can feel the shakes from here. I'm down to 6 beers per day from that and its so hard. I need help stopping 100% for more then 4 days. I wish these two love and the best of luck. I need help to. just being honest. Best of luck

I'm nearly 72 hrs without a drink...I'm sat here preying I don't have a seizure. (I've had one before) I understand how you feel. I don't have support as my family and friends drink. They won't stop for me it's triggering so I've shut myself off from them for a while. All local meetings are in the evening. I have kids so can't go there. It feels very lonely. I wish you all the best on your journey ❤

Reach out, because it's ok and you deserve a sober healthy life! I self destruct because that was easier then admitting I was being the problem.

I just think she accepts him, flaws and all, and likely realises that being an addict, there’s a good chance he will choose the drink over her, and I’m guessing that’s why she hasn’t made any ultimatums.

There are no cheat days, no exceptions. When an alcoholic starts drinking, it will always progress back to abnormal levels. I know from personal experience. She’s a poison for him, and she’s a terrible influence on him for drinking with him. If you want to support your alcoholic friends and family, NEVER have a drink with them.
