I first saw XTC in 1978 at the corn exchange in Salisbury. I’d just bought the 3D EP , dyed my hair purple and joined a band in Andover. I remember we were outside the Salisbury gig queuing up and these 4 geezers joined the Q just behind us. It was the band. AP was wearing a big fluffy red jumper so they stood out in the 70s grey. We had our one and only chat with them. We went on to see them 6 or 7 times. I’ve been a fan ever since and I’ve carried on writing and playing to this day. Now we are officially ancient Britons, the world has been a better place with the music of XTC. 😊
Do you know what noise awakes you Every morning from your bed A-coming from the farthest hillside A-coming from inside your head ----------- You have heard You have heard the loudest sound In this and every world you can think of Louder than tanks on the highway Louder than bombers in flight Louder than noises of hatred Dancing us from darkest night is the rhythm of love Powered on the the beating of hearts And did you know you had this power? Drumming on it always stays Never try to use it badly Tunes of good are all it plays You have heard You have heard the loudest sound In this and every world you can visit Louder than tanks on the highway Louder than bombers in flight Louder than noises of hatred Dancing us from darkest night is the rhythm of love Powered on the the beating of hearts For a heart without love is a song with no words And a tune to which no-one is listening So your heart must give love and you'll find that You shine like rain on the leaves you'll be glistening You have heard You have heard the loudest sound In this and every world you can think of Louder than thoughts of dictators Louder than rattling swords Louder than loading of rifles Louder than screaming warlords Louder than tanks on the highway Louder than bombers in flight Louder than noises of hatred Dancing us from darkest night is the rhythm of love Powered on the the beating of hearts
Always liked this one but it was quite a turn from their earlier stuff......Mummer was underappreciated at the time, remember it well but thinking it had some really great material on it. This was a highlight and thankfully a lot of this has been reassessed.
Es sobrecogedor escuchar esta canción hoy día, con la guerra a las puertas. Guitarras increíbles y una batería que late como un corazón. Que la oigan en todas partes.

LOUDER THAN BOMBERS IN FLIGHT (RUMBLE) Mummer is a MASTERPIECE
(HUMMMMM)
Thanks for pointing that out, I didn't notice it before.
best bit
Britain: the capital of outstanding music, even Swindon! Stunning track.
oh wow this song ages REALLY well. I love when people discover XTC at maybe a more accessible period then go find Go 2.......
That drone though when he mentions bombers in flight..
One of my all time favourite musical moments in all of popdom
Love XTC, but this song is an absolute beating! Wahi' Valleys
That guitar style, I really had to check because my mind was convinced Adrian Belew was a guest on this song.
Dave Gregory on a twelve string 1970s Rickenbacker.
What a class guitarist indeed.
Do you know what noise awakes you
Every morning from your bed
A-coming from the farthest hillside
A-coming from inside your head
-----------
You have heard
You have heard the loudest sound
In this and every world you can think of
Louder than tanks on the highway
Louder than bombers in flight
Louder than noises of hatred
Dancing us from darkest night is the rhythm of love
Powered on the the beating of hearts
And did you know you had this power?
Drumming on it always stays
Never try to use it badly
Tunes of good are all it plays
You have heard
You have heard the loudest sound
In this and every world you can visit
Louder than tanks on the highway
Louder than bombers in flight
Louder than noises of hatred
Dancing us from darkest night is the rhythm of love
Powered on the the beating of hearts
For a heart without love is a song with no words
And a tune to which no-one is listening
So your heart must give love and you'll find that
You shine like rain on the leaves you'll be glistening
You have heard
You have heard the loudest sound
In this and every world you can think of
Louder than thoughts of dictators
Louder than rattling swords
Louder than loading of rifles
Louder than screaming warlords
Louder than tanks on the highway
Louder than bombers in flight
Louder than noises of hatred
Dancing us from darkest night is the rhythm of love
Powered on the the beating of hearts
Thank you soooo much!
a wee bit of hope is this insane world we are in
What a masterpiece!

Give a world event...andy knows a song about it
...
The bombers in flight bit though...
Aye.
Never knew of this. They should have dressed in late-Sixties Hippy Chic, but bands weren't doing that until later in the Eighties.
Dukes of Stratosphere eh?
As a lover of the Bass, this is one of my less favorite XTC songs. ;)
If only Terry had stuck around...
Alas, that would have been cool to see
He played on that very song.
All the money is bet.
Uhmm, Gawd damn.
Loss... XTC wins again.
Give it up. It up it up.
