I remember Dr. .Demento, who was HUGE Spike fan, saying that everything Spike did was direct to disk--- no recording of multiple tracks or mixing--- everything had to be timed perfectly. He doubted anyone today would have the talent and skill to pull that off.
One thing you'll never hear during a Spike Jones solo ... some guy yelling, 'more cowbell!' Thanx so much for sharing! I grew up watching these talented gentlemen, and I thank them for the magic, music and memories.
Spike Jones was not always, "The Man Who Murdered Music". Sometimes he contented himself with merely committing grievous bodily harm against it. Brilliant comedian (and musician) IMHO.
these guys have more talent in their little finger than all the modern "musicians" of today! Their timing is perfect, and they did so much of this stuff on LIVE tv. Who could measure up today?
I became familiar with Spike Jones over 50 years ago. My Mom bought a house in 1970, and the previous owners left behind a two foot stack of 78's in the hall closet. Spike was among the gems.

Remembering Spike Jones born on December 14, 1911. He was an American musician and bandleader specializing in spoof arrangements of popular songs and classical music. Ballads receiving the Jones treatment were punctuated with gunshots, whistles, cowbells and outlandish and comedic vocals. Jones and his band recorded under the title Spike Jones and His City Slickers from the early 1940's to the mid-1950's, and toured the United States and Canada as The Musical Depreciation Revue. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spike_Jones

I don't know what David Rose though about this rendition, but I'd like to think he was rolling on the floor. It takes musicianship to pull it off. Exquisite timing too!
I have read that Rose was a huge fan of this. (The only music star who ever really disliked Jones' parodies was Vaughn Monroe, because Jones' group spoofed him as an incoherent drunk.)
@@dennisdivine7448 I heard it ages ago when I was just a little snot. For me it was always "The Laughing Song". Music appreciation has to start somewhere. Now I'm into Bach, Mozart, and Shostakovich and Vaughn Monroe is still tagging along with those ghost riders in the sky.

The quality of clothes was astonishing. Every piece of fabric was woven from predominantly natural fibres of the highest standard and dyed with a range of colors that dazzled or soothed the optic nerve, with hues now lost in time. Each stich and pleat, displayed the tailors skill, and buttons of tortoise shell or mother of pearl enhanced the flowing garb of these artistes. The aesthetic of this era, the specific style and elegant form, the simple joy of the absurd, or highbrow sophistication that informed their social aspirations or became the source of ridicule, demonstrates the vibrant mood of a moment that is gone, but not forgotten. A simpler time, perhaps, but also a time in which standards were high, and workmanship was important. I could almost smell the tobacco, and the mood, enhanced by fine liquors or patent medicines containing cocaine, morphia, cannabis, and amphetamine, was jovial, convivial, and enjoyable. The City slickers, knew how to live and die in _style_ and, with their musical skill provided the soundtrack for a booming generation rapidly approaching the space age, and technocratic nightmare of the bio security state. The one world government, and great reset, being foisted upon humanity in the name of Lucifer... and the Borg. I wish this was a joke.
@FAB4 No. The Borg were a variety of extraterrestrial robots and cyborgs possessing very advanced artificial intelligence. They were probably the result of an over-ambitious technocratic civilization (like ours) who became overwhelmed by their own creations, and no doubt perished as the need to replicate as well as eliminate "faults" drove the 'Borg' into space. The Borg developed a parasitic existence where humanoid life is "assimilated" meaning a person would have a mechanical device attached onto one side of the face with the brain being controlled by the Borg, who had a kind of hive mind in their huge cube shaped spacecraft. The unfortunate host would have their own thoughts erased. It was a concept from 'Star trek, The next generation'. I prefer the original series myself. IMHO, we are being pushed full steam into the same situation. Most people don't realize that some "conspiracy theories" are real, and we are indeed totally manipulated by a group of occultist elites desiring a "New world order" using a technocratic agenda which includes the merging of human and machine, by way of implantable and injectable nano scale devices and genetic enhancement. This is called "Transhumanism". I kid you not. Victor Borge was a Danish comedian. He was quite good too. 😒😷
That was the idea. If you didn’t have a sense of humor you wouldn’t like it. I had an aunt who hated Spike Jones because he “ruined good music.” As an amateur musician and growing up in a very musical family I was taught to enjoy the humor and appreciate the incredible talent it took to do that. I still love it.
Why are there not a variety of instruments in bands anymore? Only guitars, bass, guitar, and a drummer usually. BORING. Not as bad a s rappers with NO instruments though I guess....
Because you have to PAY/HOUSE/FEED the people that perform with them. During the time this video was made, band leaders were discovering that it was not as cost effective to go out with big bands to venues (Meals, housing Transportation)> They either had to find full time work like Radio/TV (At the time this video was made, Spike and his band had their own radio show and would have a TV show 7 years later) so the travel cost was lower plus had a good income stream OR travel with the Piano, Guitar and Maybe drums for a trio/quartet like Benny Goodman and Woody Herman.
The cackling chickens at the end kind of ruin it for me. Years later Spike did a re-recording without them. Maybe he decided he didn't really care for it either.

Been trying to find this for ages, such a great piece of music 😅
Introduced my husband to Spike and the Slickers. Trying to fill the gaps in his musical education. He enjoyed!
Superb - remember my Uncle Reg (Hastings, UK) playing the record of this for us kids back in the 40's. Wonderful then!
Spike Jones could probably make music from anything!

Spike Jones was an ace drummer for Bing Crosby, and that translated well to these scenes.

Let’s take notice of the harpist, whose obbligatos were stunning…both of which received total musical respect from the orchestra…
